Solid Rock Construction, Moss Builders win it all

ANNA MARIA – Beating the heat, The Center of Anna Maria Island’s youth indoor soccer league played three nights last week, ending with four teams battling it out for the championship title.

After beating the Intentional Resilient Intuitive team last Monday night in the semifinal game, Solid Rock Construction played against AMI Dolphin Tours in their final game of the season to determine which team would be the 8- to 10-year-old league champs.

AMI Dolphin Tours beat Progressive Cabinetry to gain the second spot in the championship game.

In the big match-up, first seed Solid Rock defeated their top rival after two halves of play by four shots. With the final score 10-6, goalkeeper Isaac Roadman made big moves in the goal to help Solid Rock win it all against AMI Dolphin Tours.

With nine saves in the game, Roadman helped to keep the AMI Dolphin Tours squad to two goals despite grand efforts by the team’s offense. The team’s defense could not keep Matthew Darak from scoring two goals for Solid Rock Construction.

Teammate Turner Worth scored a solo goal in the game to help secure the win.

On the other side of the hard pitch, Miles Moss had 13 stops in the goal for AMI Dolphin Tours. Playing in both age divisions, Moss maintained his top-notch play for two games last week.

Gunnar Maize and Parker Svoboda both scored outstanding goals in the match-up, but their scoring just was not enough to bring home the win.

In the older league for 11- to 13-year-old youth, the older Solid Rock team lost to team Moss Builders. Ranked #1 going into the game, Solid Rock was the favored team, but the third-ranked Moss Builders squad proved too hard to beat.

In the semifinals, Solid Rock Construction played against the Island Vacation Properties team to solidify their place in the big game. Moss Builders won against Coastline West Team to clinch the second spot.

As the ranking underdog last Wednesday night, Moss Builders turned up their game to win against Solid Rock by two.

Playing goalie for Moss Builders, Magness Rollins was credited with 11 big stops, while Callin Westfall put two points on the scoreboard for his team. Teammate Jackson Wyatt contributed to the win with a goal of his own.

Solid Rock Construction’s Austin Guess saved 11 goals in the game as well, with a single goal by Ryk Kesten to keep the team in the game until the last whistle blew, signaling the end of the game and season.

Rounding out recreational sports action at The Center, adult co-ed flag football play continued last Thursday night. Remaining undefeated, top-ranked Luxury Services eked out the win against Cortez Deep Sea Fishing by a touchdown and one-point conversion, 34-27.

In the second game of the night, team Moss Builders easily ended the game victorious against Sandbar Seafood & Spirits. With the final score, 46-24, Moss Builders advances to the championship game to face Luxury Services on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. at The Center.

ANNA MARIA – Last week at The Center, the summer youth indoor soccer regular season play came to a close with both Solid Rock Construction teams solidly on top with 10-0 wins in both the age group leagues.

In the 11- to 13-year-old league, the Solid Rock team beat the Island Vacation Properties squad. Working hard on the court, team Island Vacation Properties held their own and fought hard for two halves of play.

The Coastline West team handed the Moss Builders team their fourth win with a forfeit last Monday night, leading into the playoffs.

The first round of playoffs was played this past Monday night with identical matchups. Coastline West looks to beat Moss Builders on the indoor pitch to advance to the championship game on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 7:15 p.m.

One of the two teams faces either Solid Rock or Island Vacation Properties.

The younger ballers played last Tuesday night in The Center’s gymnasium with family and friends perched on the stage watching the hardcourt action. AMI Dolphin Tours won against Progressive Cabinetry by three goals, with a final score of 6-3.

In the last game of the regular season for the 8- to 10-year-old league, Solid Rock Construction kept the Intentional Resilient Intuitive team from getting their first win of the season, despite their hard, never quit play.

Each of the four teams matched up identically this Monday night to determine the championship game showdown. The teams are scheduled to play on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Quarter-final adult flag football play concluded Thursday night with no big surprises. Top-ranked Luxury Services faced the last seed The Banks Home Lending Team, coming out on top with an easy win, 54-18.

Luxury faces Cortez Deep Sea Fishing Thursday at 8 p.m. in the first semifinal adult flag football game. The fourth-ranked Cortez Deep Sea Fishing crew won against team Salty Fishing by 27 points. Salty finished the regular season just under their quarterfinal opponents.

In the second half of the night, team Sandbar Seafood & Spirits won against an injured Solid Rock Construction squad. Quarterback Charles “Tuna” McCracken was sidelined at the end of the last regular season game with an injury that impacted him Thursday night.

McCracken’s injury added to team aches with Zach Long also sidelined during the season. Long was unable to play the quarterfinal game.

Sandbar Seafood & Spirits goes up against the second-ranked Moss Builders team in the 9 p.m. semifinal game on Thursday night under the lights of the community center gridiron.

Moss Builders won by 18 points against the second-to-last place Gulf Drive Café team. With the final score of 25-7, Moss Builders showed why the team is a top contender for the season championship winner.

The final game of the adult co-ed flag football season is slated for Thursday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. at The Center of Anna Maria Island to close out the summer sports season.

Solid Rock comes out on top

Solid Rock comes out on top

ANNA MARIA – The final week of regular season adult co-ed flag football play energized The Center gridiron last Thursday night. For the four teams in the middle of the pack, every play and every second mattered.

By the end of the night, team Solid Rock Construction captured the third-seed position in the first round of the playoffs, narrowly defeating the Salty Printing squad with a score of 14-12.

Despite a late-game injury, Tuna McCracken and the Solid Rock team won by two points in what proved to be a defensive battle. With 36 total flag pulls recorded by both teams, Evelyn Long led the league in flag pulls for the week.

Long’s eight flag pulls Thursday night put her in third to end the regular season in defensive stops. Her 29 total pulls were only topped by teammates Tyler Brewer and McCracken, each with 30 in the seven-game season.

With McCracken on the sideline, receiver Connor Ludwig took the snaps for the last several minutes of the game. Throwing for a touchdown to Brewer and receiving for one from McCracken, Ludwig helped clinch the team’s playoff position.

On the flip side, Brandon Rolland had the only offensive scoring for Salty while teammate Zaon William scored six points on defense for his team.

Williams also finished the season tied with Long for third in flag pulls with 29 big stops.

Making the scoring difference for Solid Rock Construction was Brewer’s two one-point conversions, giving the squad a marginal lead. Brewer had seven catches in the game, leading his team and adding to his season total of 38 receptions.

Solid Rock’s win put them in the third quarterfinal game bracket with Sandbar Seafood & Spirits. Sandbar lost to #7 Gulf Drive Café in the first game of the night, giving the Gulf Drive team only their second win of the season.

Playing in the last game this Thursday night against the second seed Moss Builders team, team Gulf Drive Café will need to play strong and with no mistakes.

Salty’s loss placed them in fifth position behind Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. In the second playoff game Thursday night at 7 p.m., the two teams will face off for a spot in the semifinal next week.

Playing in the heat of the 6 p.m. game, the underdogs of #8 The Banks Home Lending Team hope the curse of the first-place team continues to rear its ugly head as they face the top-seed Luxury Services team.

As the quarterback, Luxury’s Chase Richardson leads the league in passing touchdowns with 32 this season. Between them, The Banks Home Lending’s Cruz Rodriguez and Cory Banks managed to pass 20 total touchdowns in seven games.

Luxury Services also closed out the season number one and three for receiving touchdowns with Tim Holly finishing with 13 TD catches and Alonzo Lemus securing 11 scoring nabs.

The team’s regular season dominance continued on defense with Holly’s 11 QB sacks, as well as a total of 12 interceptions by teammates Derrick Carey, Jasmine Muldoon and Richardson, each with four picks.

This week’s play will see if the top team prevails or if the undefeated Luxury Services team has their championship hopes stopped short Thursday night.

ANNA MARIA – After six weeks of adult co-ed flag football games at The Center of Anna Maria Island, team Moss Builders is the victim of the undefeated team Luxury Services. The 40-point loss is uncharacteristic of any Moss Builders team that hits the field.

In the easy win, Luxury’s QB Chase Richardson threw for five touchdowns and took the football into the endzone for six points of his own. Defensively, Richardson contributed with two flag pulls.

The Luxury defense prevented the lethal arm of Ryan Moss from being effective, holding him to just one scoring pass to James Roadman for Moss Builders. Roadman’s catch for six points compliments his defensive interception and stop.

The Moss Builders’ loss was not for the lack of effort by the defense. With 14 recorded flag pulls, the Moss D put the pressure on Richardson, sacking him once and nabbing two interceptions. Isaiah Lambert, for Moss Builders, is credited with the Richardson sack and a flag pull in addition to his single catch.

Peggy Smith, playing as the required female on the team, caught five receptions for positive yardage. Defensively Greg Moss and Nick Cavalluzzi each had four flag pulls, helping to keep the Moss Builders team in the game.

With the victory, Luxury Services’ Tim Holly had the hot hands with seven catches, including one for a TD and a two-point conversion. Holly carried the football into the endzone and had a safety to add points to the scoreboard.

Teammates Alonzo Lemus and Derrick Carey each caught five Richardson passes. Lemus scored two touchdowns, while Cary was hit for one.

Jasmine Muldoon scored six points with a catch and contributed on defense with two flag pulls.

The Cortez Deep Sea Fishing team plays Moss Builders Thursday as the last regular game of the season at 9:00 p.m.

Solid Rock Construction leads youth indoor soccer leagues

ANNA MARIA – Escaping the extreme heat of the week, family and friends packed The Center’s gymnasium last week for youth indoor soccer action. After taking a week off for Independence Day, both youth leagues took to the indoor pitch for three action-packed games.

Both of the Solid Rock Construction teams currently lead their leagues, with the youngest squad remaining undefeated after beating the Progressive Cabinetry team 6-4 last Tuesday night.

Matthew Darak was the high scorer for the Solid Rock team with a hat trick. Teammates Turner Worth and Elijah Roadman each contributed to the scoring with three additional goals. Worth is credited with an assist.

Darak, with an assist of his own, also played in the defensive goalkeeper position, making four saves in the game. Sharing the keeper responsibilities, Isaac Roadman had five critical stops, helping his team earn another W.

With a hat trick, Progressive Cabinetry’s Kason Price helped to keep his team in the game. A solid goal and assist by Rafa Price, along with 14 total saves by Vincent Gollamudi and Price challenged the Solid Rock team every second of the game.

Last Tuesday, team Intentional Resilient Intuitive played hard against the AMI Dolphin Tours team despite the end score of 8-0.

Intentional goalkeepers Camden Rudacille and Paul ten Haaf, with nine and 14 saves, respectively, stayed focused and determined despite the arsenal of shots taken by the AMI Dolphin Tours offense.

With three goals, Gunnar Maize also played goalie and had three saves in the game. AMI Dolphins Tours teammates Louis Bacon, Kazimir Funtal and Charlee Maize each added a goal to G. Maize’s hat trick.

Bacon and Funtal provided assistance on two of their team’s goals, along with two goals by Parker Svoboda.

AMI Dolphin Tours’ primary goalie, Miles Moss, had five big stops in the team’s first win of the season.

The older league played the night before with a single game due to a forfeit by team Coastline West Team – Wagner Realty. The forfeit put the Solid Rock Construction team in the 11- to 13-year-old league at the top of the ranking.

Team Moss Builders faced the Island Vacation Properties team, winning by three goals after two halves of indoor soccer action.

Despite the 18 total saves by Alonso Valle and Chandler McRae, the goals by Tucker McRae and Valle just were not enough to defeat the Moss Builders team.

Moss Builders’ Callin Westfall lead his team to victory with three goals and an assist. Big plays and the hot feet of Mason Moss and Jackson Wyatt added two points to the scoreboard for their team. Walker Wyatt made a huge assist leading to a scoring strike.

Goalie Magness Rollins protected his team’s net with 10 saves, contributing to Moss Builders’ second win of the season last Monday night.

The Center’s adult flag football league played four games in week five last Thursday night.

Team Luxury Services remains undefeated after beating fourth-ranked Cortez Deep Sea Fishing 47-20.

Moss Builders is a close second with only one loss. Their 45-6 win against The Banks Home Lending Team proves their continued dominance in the league.

Currently ranked third, Sandbar Seafood & Spirits easily beat the Salty Printing squad 45-32. The Salty team is in the fifth slot going into week six play.

Solid Rock’s adult flag football team, ranked sixth, defeated the Gulf Drive Café team 47-24, leaving the Gulf Drive squad in sixth.

Still in playoff contention, The Banks Home Lending Team sits in the eighth-place slot after their loss to Moss Builders. Despite losing 45-6, The Banks team lives to play another week under the gridiron lights at The Center.

ANNA MARIA – In the blazing heat of the Fourth of July week weather, the adult co-ed flag football league played last Thursday night pushing past mid-season match-ups.

In the final game of the night, The Banks Home Lending Team earned their first win against the Solid Rock Construction team with a final score of 46-29. Favored to finish the game victorious, Solid Rock’s mistakes paved the way for their opponent.

After four games, three teams are in the middle of the pack with 2-2-0 records. Teams Sandbar Seafood & Spirits, Cortez Deep Sea Fishing and Salty Printing all go into Thursday night’s games hoping to break away.

The three teams are chasing The Moss Builders team. Their win against the Salty Printing squad puts the team ranked second just under Luxury Services.

Luxury Services easily won against Gulf Drive Café, winning by 17 points. Both team’s quarterbacks showed impressive cool under pressure under the beating sun.

With four touchdown passes, team captain and Luxury Services QB outthrew Gulf Drives’ quarterback, Dominick Otteni, by one TD throw. Richardson kept the ball for himself on a touchdown run for six points, while Otteni played on defense with two key flag pulls.

Otteni’s scoring targets last Thursday night were Dallas Buchholz, with six points in the game, and Jacob Ferda, scoring two TDs from six game catches in addition to five defensive stops.

Despite strong defensive play with two interceptions for the Gulf Drive team by Meghan Mitchell and Kiatrell Zachery, and a QB sack by Steven Pavina, the squad just could not make it click on offense.

Off the arm of Richardson, Tim Holly and Alonzo Lemus each found the endzone twice for 24 points. Holly was Richardson’s main game target with 12 catches. Lemus followed close with eight receptions of his own.

In addition to Richardson’s running score, Holly raced into the endzone for six more Luxury Services points. He is also credited with getting to Otteni in time to snag his flag before the football left the QB’s hand.

Holly and his teammates worked to keep their team undefeated going into week five play.

Coming off their loss against Luxury Services, Gulf Drive Café hopes to improve on their 1-3-0 record.

With regular season play to continue for a few more weeks, three teams sit at the bottom of the rankings hoping to position themselves for playoffs. Gulf Drive Café shares the single win record with The Banks Home Lending Team and Solid Rock Construction.

Gulf Drive faces Solid Rock this Thursday at 7 p.m. while The Banks Home Lending Team plays team Moss Builders in the last game of the night.

Kicking off the flag football action this week, Salty Printing hopes to improve its record against the Sandbar team. The 8 p.m. game has current top seed Luxury Services defending their undefeated record against the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad.

ANNA MARIA – The Island-area tweens and teens took to the indoor soccer pitch in The Center’s gymnasium for week three action. With the standings in the 11- to 13-year-old league close, the four teams all went into this week’s play with the final week of play in view.

Due to a forfeit by Moss Builders, only one game was played last Monday night. Island Vacation Properties lost the game against Solid Rock Construction 5-4. The win was the first for the Solid Rock team in the oldest youth league.

Goals by Chandler McRae, Jimmie Melichar and Alonso Valle for Island Vacation Properties kept the squad in the game. Solid Rock’s offense was just a little too much for their opponent’s defense.

With seven saves each, Island Vacation Properties’ goalies McRae and Valle worked hard to protect their net. Solid Rock’s keeper Austin Guess was solid in his position, making 10 stops.

Renan and Ryk Kesten each scored a goal for Solid Rock in addition to a hat trick by Wes Saxon for the win.

The ballers in the 8- to 10-year-old league played two nights in a row to get their schedule back on track. After playing last Tuesday, team Intentional Resilient Intuitive had a hard loss against the Progressive Cabinetry team.

Winning the game 11-2, Max Mcmaster had five points in the game. Mcmaster’s teammates, Wesley Bekkerus, Rafa Price and Kason Price contributed with goals of their own.

  1. Price worked his magic in the keeper position making six defensive stops. Adding to the save count for Progressive, Vincent Gollamudi had five saves in the statistics for the game.

On the other side of the line, Paul ten Haaf scored the only two goals for the Intentional squad. Ten Haaf, playing as goalkeeper, made six saves in the match. Teammate Luke Willing shared the duties, making six stops as well.

The youngest Solid Rock Construction team earned the win against AMI Dolphin Tours, winning by three goals. Parker Svoboda scored the solo goal for AMI Dolphin Tours.

Sharing the scoring credits, Matthew Darak and Samuel Raulerson each got the soccer ball past the AMI Dolphin Tours’ keepers.

The four goalkeepers in the game were kept busy with a total of 22 saves. With eight saves each, Isaac Roadman for Solid Rock and Gunnar Maize for AMI Dolphin Tours set the pace, while teammates Darak and Maize each helped with big saves of their own for their teams.

Wrapping up week three sports at The Center, the adult co-ed flag football league played under the big lights for four games.

In a high-scoring game, the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing team beat Gulf Drive Café by two points, winning 41-39. Team Salty Printing had an easy time of it against The Banks Home Lending Team with the final score 39-18.

Playing without their team captain, Ryan Moss, Moss Builders was shut out by Sandbar Seafood & Spirits. Sandbar scored 29 points in the third game of the night last Thursday.

Winning and remaining undefeated, Luxury Services won their third game of the season against Solid Rock Construction. Solid Rock kept the game close the entire two halves of play, losing only by two points.

Heading into the mid-point of the season for all the leagues, the championship games are in sight and all of the teams remain strong contenders.

Luxury Services and Moss Builders lead the pack

ANNA MARIA – Adult flag football and youth indoor soccer play continued at The Center last week. In the second week of play, two teams rose to the top of the pack.

Luxury Services and Moss Builders look to be the teams to beat this season going into week three play undefeated. Luxury Services had an easy time against the Sandbar Seafood & Spirits crew last Thursday night, winning by 16 points.

In the defensive battle royale, eight total interceptions were recorded in the statistics between both teams, along with more than 25 flag pulls. Leading in the defensive stops for Luxury Services was Derrick Carey with seven pulls.

Jonathan Soultatos, a member of last season’s championship team, along with teammate Ramon Guerrero IV had four flag pulls each, helping the team total 15 stops during the two halves of play.

The wheels of Tim Holly allowed him to get to the Sandbar quarterback with three sacks in the game. On the other side of the football, Soultatos got to the QB once for a big stop.

For the offense and the win, Luxury Services quarterback Chase Richardson hit Alonzo Lemus three times for touchdowns. Two-point conversions by Richardson and Lemus, along with a sack for a safety by Holly, gave the Luxury team 30 points and the win.

Despite the loss, Sandbar scored two touchdowns and Guerrero made a two-point conversion. TDs by Soultatos and Zachary Routh helped to keep the team in the game, but it just was not enough.

In game two Thursday night, Gulf Drive Café dominated the field on both offense and defense against The Banks Home Lending Team with the final score of 41-15. Dominick Otteni threw for four touchdowns and had a rushing TD of his own to help lead his team to the win.

Otteni’s scoring targets were Dallas Buchholz, Jacob Ferda, Steven Pavina and Kiatrell Zachery. Pavina scored for Gulf Drive while on defense, while Zachery, Ferda and Otteni added to the points after conversions.

The Banks Home Lending Team managed to get 15 points up in lights thanks to two nice throws by Cruz Rodriguez leading to 12 points by Juan Vega and Joseph Vigil. Don Uffinger is credited with a sack leading to a safety for two points.

Contributing to the team’s scoring, Sequiel Marintez scored a one-point conversion for The Banks Home Lending Team.

The third game in the adult flag football league was a nailbiter. Salty Printing eked out the win by three points against Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. Zaon Williams led the Salty team with three passing touchdowns and six points on his feet rushing into the end zone.

Joey Carder, Jose Perez and Brandon Rolland each put up six points with nice catches for touchdowns. Andrew Procter scored three critical conversion points in the game, helping to give his team the win.

Scoring his own one-point conversion, Rolland had seven points in the game, with two catches and one flag pull.

Despite the strong efforts of the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad, the win eluded them. Matt Manger and Anthony Mannino shared the QB duties. Mannino threw for one TD and scored on a reception from Manger. While playing defense, Mannino was credited with a flag pull, interception and a defensive touchdown.

Flipping roles, Mannino threw a touchdown pass to Manger. Other targets of the night for touchdowns were Johnny Sevier and Jesse Skipper. Skipper found himself in the endzone causing a sack and safety.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad, Anthony McCance contributed with a one-point conversion.

In the final game of the night, QB Tuna McCracken just could not find one more scoring opportunity for the Solid Rock Construction team, losing to Moss Builders 20-14.

Despite finding Connor Ludwig and Evelyn Long open for scoring passes and one-point conversions by both, Moss Builders made it into the end zone one more time than Solid Rock.

Veteran player Ryan Moss threw for three touchdowns, hitting cousin Greg Moss twice and Isaiah Lambert once for three touchdowns. G. Moss and Lambert each had a single interception in the game.

Moss rounded out his statistics with a two-point conversion to help the Moss Builders team capture its second win, remaining undefeated along with Luxury Services heading into week three play this Thursday night at The Center.

Youth soccer

In youth indoor soccer action, two games were played in the 11- to 13-year-old league last Monday night. Playing the first game, the Coastline West Team/Wagner Realty left Island Vacation Properties scoreless with a final score of 9-0.

David Zupa scored five goals for Coastline, along with three goals by Cayson Travis and a single by Grady Sandhoff. Blake Brower played goalie for Coastline, making 15 saves.

On the other side of the indoor field, Jimmie Melichar made 16 saves, while teammate Alonso Valle had 13 stops as goalie for Island Vacation Properties.

Winning by two goals, Moss Builders, with Miles Moss in goal, defeated Solid Rock Construction in youth indoor soccer. Moss made 10 stops for his team, with scoring by his brother, Mason Moss, and Magness Rollins for four points.

Solid Rock Construction’s Austin Guess stopped 11 shots as the keeper, while Mckenna Darak and Wes Saxon each had single goals to close out week two of youth indoor soccer action in the gymnasium at the Island’s community center.

Summer sports kick off at The Center

ANNA MARIA – As the first official day of summer approaches, the heat of the Island evenings pushes The Center’s youth sports activities inside with indoor soccer’s kickoff games last week. Thursday night started the adult co-ed recreational summer flag football action on the big field with competitive action once again.

Because of ties and forfeits, only one team in each of the youth indoor leagues came out victorious at the end of their games. Teams Solid Rock Construction and Island Vacation Properties won in their respective leagues.

In 8- to 10-year-old league play, Solid Rock Construction hit the gymnasium floor against team Progressive Cabinetry. Strong goal-scoring by the Solid Rock squad gave them the win with the final score 6-4.

Scoring for Solid Rock, Matthew Darak made four goals. Teammate Holden put two points on the scoreboard. At the net, Isaac Roadman protected the goal with skill making five saves in the team’s win week one.

Max McMaster scored the two goals for Progressive Cabinetry, while Vincent Gollamundi miraculously made 15 big stops in the game as goalie for his team.

Island Vacation Properties was the lone victor in the 11- to 13-year-old league due to a forfeit by team Moss Builders.

Indoor soccer action between team Coastline West Team – Wagner Realty and Solid Rock Construction ended in a 3-3 tie. With 11 saves by Austin Guess for Solid Rock, the team held its own against the Coastline West squad thanks to three goals by Wes Saxon.

Coastline’s goals came off the boots of David Zupa with two goals and Grady Sandhoff with a solo goal. Making eight amazing saves, the Coastline West Team’s goalie, Blake Brower, helped his team hold on to the tie, giving each team one point in the season.

After four adult flag football games, four teams came out on top finishing the week with 1-0-0 records. Teams Luxury Services, Moss Builders, Sandbar Seafood & Spirits and Solid Rock Construction each took home a win.

Starting off the season, Salty Printing matched up with last season’s big winners, team Luxury Services. With a slightly different lineup, the Luxury team easily won their first game 35-12. Tim Holly topped the men’s flag-pulling for the week with eight snags.

In another high-scoring game and aerial assault, Moss Builders scored 45 points against the Gulf Drive Café defense. The Gulf Drive team managed to put up 26 points on the scoreboard in their first loss last Thursday night.

Defense was the name of the game in the third game of the adult flag football season with the Solid Rock Construction team winning against team Cortez Deep Sea Fishing 14-7. Evelyn Long made seven amazing stops with flag pulls for the Solid Rock team, just short of Holly.

Ending the night with the closest game of the week, Sandbar Seafood & Spirits barely earned the win against The Banks Home Lending Team. Winning by two points, the Sandbar team came out on top with the final score 28-26.

Playing toward the championship games in August, 16 teams, three leagues, two sports compete at The Center all summer.

Coaches lead young teams to victory

ANNA MARIA – The beauty of the Island as a community is the strong sense of volunteerism and giving back. Three young men who grew up in the Island community exemplified the best qualities that locals know and love, coaching 8- to 10-year-old team Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control to ultimate season victory last Tuesday night at The Center.

Head Coach Tyler Brewer, along with assistant coaches Charles “Tuna” McCracken and Javier Rivera, skillfully and compassionately coached 11 little soccer players, getting them through the regular season and first round of playoffs. The three coaches also helped their players in gaining confidence with each game.

With all skill levels on the team, the three graduates of Anna Maria Elementary School and lifelong friends found the strengths of each player and worked with them to hone their personal soccer skills. Ultimately, the individual players came together as a unified team by the end of the regular season.

After amazing semifinal action last Monday night with the top two teams being on the losing side of the stat sheet, teams Cheesecake Cutie and Sato Real Estate sat out during the big championship game last week.

Despite the shutout, the Island Real Estate team, led by the experienced soccer skills of Keith Mahoney, fought hard during all 40 minutes of regulation play. Miles Moss, goalkeeper for Island Real Estate, had 10 amazing stops in the game.

The determined Westfall squad was just too much for their opponent’s offense and defense. Throughout the season, Landon Chatt, Gabriel Foley, Preston LaPensee, Chandler LaPensee, Owen Mahoney, Kellan Oelfke, Asher Patel, Jordy Perez, Colton Sullivan and Julian Whipple-Anderson, along with Moss, all fought hard and had an amazing season under their coach’s direction and leadership.

On the winning side of the field, Brewer’s players showed up for the game ready to win. Keeper Kason Price had 10 big stops to help secure his team’s victory.

Wesley Bekkerus and Callin Westfall put points on the scoreboard for team Westfall with their solid shots against the Island Real Estate defense. Scoring when it mattered while keeping calm heads under pressure became the key to success for the 8- to 10-year-old champs.

In teen soccer action, the number one seed Gulf Drive Café easily moved on to the final round of the playoffs against Shady Lady Horticultural Services. Also going forward to the final game of the season, HSH Designs took their place by winning against Moss Builders in overtime penalty kicks.

Leaving it all on the field, team HSH Designs just could not make the shots to win the game against team Gulf Drive Café.

The hot foot of Luke Dellenger helped to secure the championship win for his team with a hat trick. Protecting the net, Gulf Drive’s goalkeeper Cyrus Ryan made five important stops. Teammate Kegan McGlade made an additional save.

Opponent goalie Chase Castagna prevented seven goals for HSH Designs. Helping keep the team in pink in the game, Cecelia Kroth scored the lone goal for her team.

Teammates Braelyn Curtis, Sterling Holiday, Riley Karecki, Sophia Kerr, Krosby Lamison, Kirra Quimby, Briahna Robertson, Brittney Robertson and Brett Shortridge all did their part to get the HSH squad to the final game of the season.

In the final game of the spring soccer season at The Center, the adult co-eds played a thrilling game last Thursday night. The rain in the first half could not dampen the high emotions on the field and sidelines.

After two halves of play, team Pool America topped the Vintage Beach team by one goal.

Teammate Sam Parker sailed a beautiful shot over the head of the Vintage Beach keeper in the big game, raising the volume of the Pool America team’s and supporting spectators’ cheers.

Pool America’s goalie Robb Marshall did his part to secure the win with seven saves against a strong Vintage Beach offense.

Making the stops for team Vintage Beach, PJ Smargisso stopped eight shots from the team deemed the “Germans” in the season with strong representation from various parts of the country.

Danny Free had the hot foot for Vintage with a hat trick of his own, along with an assist by team captain Joey Hutchinson. The three goals just were not enough.

With the sound of the final whistle, team Pool America captured the Paul “Ace” Hayward Championship Cup to end another season of Center soccer on Anna Maria Island.

ANNA MARIA – With all three soccer leagues winding down at The Center, the championship games are in sight for the youth and adult Island ballers.

Last Tuesday night the number one and two seed teams in the 8- to 10-year-old league had a bye week as their reward for finishing the regular season on top. The Cheesecake Cutie team finished number one with 15 points in the season and a 5-1-0 record.

The Sato Real Estate squad came in a close second with 12 points and four wins in the six-game regular season.

Four scorers put up the points for team Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control last week to put the team into the next round of playoffs. Wesley Bekkerus, Madeline Kimmons, Maggie Niedzwick and Callin Westfall each made a goal against AMI Coconuts goalkeeper Andre Harwood.

The Westfall offense kept Harwood on his toes during the first-round playoff game, making 10 saves in the match. In the opposite goal, Westfall is credited with a save, along with teammate Kason Price’s seven stops.

Scoring the lone goal for AMI Coconuts, TJ Hagey and his teammates could not get past their opponents’ defense and find the net.

Westfall’s Lawn Care took on Sato Real Estate Monday in the first youth semifinal game. In the second game this past Monday, Cheesecake Cutie played team Island Real Estate, the winner of the second quarterfinal game last week.

In post-regulation time penalty kicks, Island Real Estate secured the second semifinal slot, winning against Solid Rock Construction.

Before the PKs, each team scored a single goal. Solid Rock’s Matthew Darak and Island Real Estate’s Preston LaPensee took the teams to a kickoff to determine who played the Cheesecake squad.

With seven and eight saves respectively, goalies Isaac Roadman, for Solid Rock Construction, and Miles Moss, for Island Real Estate, helped secure the overtime play.

Solid Rock Construction’s Elijah Roadman made the only PK for his team. Under the pressure of overtime play, Owen Mahoney and Jordy Perez each made their penalty kicks, helping to secure Island Real Estate’s place in the semifinals.

The winners of the league go head-to-head on May 23 at 6 p.m. in the final game of the season.

The 11- to 13-year-old teams finished their regular season games last week with Gulf Drive Café defeating Shady Lady Horticultural Services 4-3 and HSH Designs winning over Moss Builders 5-2.

ANNA MARIA – The adult co-ed recreational soccer playoff games kicked off last Thursday night at the Island’s community center. After seven weeks of exciting soccer play, eight teams battled it out in four action-packed matches.

To start the night at The Center, first-seed Duncan Real Estate took the field as the team to beat, losing only one game in the regular season. Their opponent, the last-place Moss Builders team, had nothing to lose and a seat in the semifinals to gain with the win.

With friends and family cheering on both sides, the underdogs Moss Builders ended the first half of play with a two-goal lead against the Duncan squad.

The Duncan team struggled to click as a team in the game. Moving the ball down the field was an effort against a motivated Moss Builder defense.

After nearly two halves of play in the heat of the early evening, the game was tied with only minutes left in the game.

Duncan Real Estate goalkeeper, Charles “Tuna” McCracken, uncharacteristically let two soccer balls past him with an absent defense at the end of the game. McCracken finished with seven saves, letting five go.

McCracken’s Moss Builders’ counterpart David Moss had eight big stops to help his team to victory.

The hard strikes of Adam Bujarski and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos, each with two goals in the quarterfinal game, helped the Moss team advance in the playoffs. Teammate Cemal Duzgun scored a solo goal in the match.

Duzgun and Pedro Gonzalez are credited with assists in the goal scoring for Moss Builders.

Despite the defeat, the Duncan Real Estate team put three points on the scoreboard. Team captain Kevin Roman scored his last two goals of the season and Erica Nielsen had a nice goal for Duncan. The offensive efforts, including assists by Tyler Brewer and Murat Akay, just were not enough to give their team a W.

Moss Builders moves on in the playoffs, facing Pool America at on Thursday night, May 18, at 7 p.m. at The Center. Pool America beat Gulfview Windows & Doors after a tie in regulation play.

After eight PK shots, Pool America came out on top, with goals by Nate Welch, Eduardo Schlueter and Jamie Hutchison. Dean Hinterstoisser, as the third shooter for Pool America, surprisingly missed his shot.

Keith Mahoney, shooting for Gulfview, was the only one of the four shooters for his team to make the shot.

Goalkeepers Mark Long, for Gulfview Windows & Doors, and Pool America’s Robb Marshall, both made critical stops for their teams with six and seven saves, respectively.

In other adult soccer semifinal playoff action, the Sandbar team faces the Vintage Beach squad in the semifinals at 8 p.m. this week. Vintage Beach defeated Sato Real Estate by one goal, while the Solid Rock Construction team lost to Sandbar Seafood & Spirits with a final score of 5-3.

This week in youth soccer, the 8- to 10-year-olds started league playoff action on the small pitch. The 11- to 13-year-old league finished their regular season games on Tuesday and will start playoff play next week.

As the summer heat approaches, spring soccer at The Center starts coming to a close with championship play in the coming weeks.

ANNA MARIA – Week six of youth recreational soccer ended the regular season Monday and Tuesday night, with the fifth-week play helping to set the stage for the playoffs.

Cheesecake Cuties finished the fifth week undefeated in the 8- to 10-year-old league with a one-goal win against Sato Real Estate. The two goals by Gunnar Maize helped the Cuties stay on top, along with the five saves by goalkeeper Sawyer Leibfried.

For Sato Real Estate, currently ranked just under Cheesecake Cuties, Vincent Gollamudi made four nice stops, but his saves and the single goal by Brandon Sato just was not enough for the talented team in purple.

Team Solid Rock Construction, with the same record as the Sato team going into the final week before playoffs, won their game against Island Real Estate with a final score of 4-1. Matthew Darak made all four goals for the Solid Rock team with assists by Luke Willing and Obi Roadman.

Isaac Roadman made two big stops in goal, while Island Real Estate’s Owen Mahoney and Miles Moss had two and six saves respectively. Preston LaPensee scored the single goal for his team.

Island Real Estate finished week five under Westfall Lawn Care & Pest Control. The Westfall squad played hard against the AMI Coconuts team, only to finish the game in a 2-2 tie. Wesley Bekkerus scored an early goal for Westfall with a second goal scored by Callin Westfall.

Westfall is also credited with an assist in the first game last Tuesday night. Goalies Kason Price and Jordan Steele made saves that gave their team points for the tie.

On the other side of the soccer ball, TJ Hagey scored team AMI Coconuts both of its points. The Westfall shooters kept Andre Harwood busy protecting his goal, making 15 stops.

In the 11- to 13-year-old league, two games were played with HSH Designs easily defeating Shady Lady Horticultural Services by four goals. Sterling Holiday crashed the Shady Lady defense to score five goals in the game.

Teammate Chase Castagna made seven nice saves against shots by the Shady Lady team. Aubrielle Clarke managed to get one by Castagna for her team’s only goal. Jack Zaccagnino kept his composure despite the arsenal of shots by the HSH offense, keeping four out of the goal.

Number one ranked Gulf Drive Café took their first loss of the season last week against Moss Builders, currently ranked second. Moss Builders goal scorers Colin Bankert, Mason Moss and Callin Westfall helped make the win possible, along with 20 saves by Austin Guess.

Guess’ work came from the Gulf Drive offense shooting every chance the team got. Luke Dellenger is the only Gulf Drive shooter who was able to get one past Guess. In the net for Gulf Drive Café, Cyrus Ryan was put to work by the Moss Builders’ offense, saving 10 shots.

The final adult soccer regular season games were played last Thursday night. Going into the first week of playoffs, Duncan Real Estate finished on top and is slated to play against eighth-ranked Moss Builders on Thursday at 6 p.m.

In the last game to be played at 9 p.m., Sato Real Estate, finishing the regular season play in second position, will face off against seventh-seed Vintage Beach. Ending the regular season in third, the Sandbar team matches up against Solid Rock Construction, sixth seed, at 8 p.m.

The 7 p.m. game has fourth place Gulfview Windows & Doors looking for the win against the fifth-ranked Pool America in order to advance to the semifinals, to be played on May 18.

Team Gulf Drive Café still undefeated

ANNA MARIA – Coming into week three of youth recreational soccer play, the Gulf Drive Café team was on top with two wins. Their week three opponents, HSH Designs, earned a win and fought hard for a tie in the past weeks.

Keeping both teams’ goalkeepers busy, the offenses made shots past defenders for two halves of play.

The leadership of Cyrus Ryan in goal helped the Gulf Drive Café squad to their third victory. Listening to the chatter of Ryan, Gulf Drive players shifted and changed field position to keep the HSH team moving and guessing.

Ryan finished the game with six saves. His counterpart, Chase Castagna, fought hard in the net for his team, also closing out the match with six critical stops.

On offense for HSH, Cecelia Kroth made a beautiful goal, scoring her team’s only goal.

Gulf Drive Café selflessly passed the ball, getting the soccer ball to the feet of Theo Aupelle, Luke Dellenger, Josiah MacDonald and Jayden Sparks for goals. Kegan McGalde is credited with an assist in the game.

The scoring power of the 11- to 13-year-old league leader, Gulf Drive Café, was just too much for their week three opponent.

Going into the coming week, the teen league’s Shady Lady Horticultural Services looks for their first win. Last week, the squad came close with a 3-2 loss against the Moss Builders team.

Moss Builders finished the week with a 1-1-1 record.

As the season approaches the playoffs, the oldest youth recreation league championship game is still in reach for all four teams at The Center.

Gulfview rallies to tie Duncan

ANNA MARIA – With the completion of week three of the adult co-ed soccer spring season, team Gulfview Windows & Doors is still in search of their first win. The team fought back on April 13 against Duncan Real Estate with hard-striking goals by Keith Mahoney to tie the ballgame 5-5 in the last minutes of the match-up.

Duncan Real Estate’s team captain, Kevin Roman, started the scoring in the game early in the first half, kicking in his only goal in the game. Despite the single goal, Roman worked the soccer field both on offense and defense, giving his teammates scoring opportunities.

Javier Rivera scored the second goal for Duncan with a shot ricocheting off the left post. The third goal, shot by Nicholas Cavalluzzi, kept the Duncan Real Estate squad in the lead.

Working the field, Mahoney scored a total of four goals in the game for Gulfview Windows & Doors, with a single by Kris Yavalar.

Rounding out the goal-making for Duncan Real Estate, Murat Akay shot the next goal, taking the score to 4-2. Shooting the fifth goal, Akay gave his team a two-point lead, after a Gulfview goal.

Duncan goalie, Charles “Tuna” McCracken, despite his amazing saves, saw his team’s lead diminish as Mahoney scored the tying goal. Finishing the game with 15 saves, McCracken continues to be one of the toughest goalkeepers in the league.

McCracken’s counterpart, Mark Long, made 17 saves in the game, always keeping the Duncan team in the Thursday night battle.

With the tie, team Duncan Real Estate moves into third place along with Sato Real Estate with a 2-1-1 record. The Vintage Beach team tied the Sato squad with four goals each.

Sandbar Seafood & Spirits holds on to the top spot with a win over Pool America by one goal. Solid Rock Construction shares the top spot with the Sandbar team, earning nine points in the season.

Going into the fifth week of play, Moss Builders has a 2-2-0 record after losing to the Solid Rock team.

More than mid-way through the season, the top position is still up for grabs. All eight teams in the league continue to vie for the championship title.
