Moss Builders and Root Logix earn the title “Champions”

Moss Builders, Root Logix earn the title “Champions”

At the start of Tuesday night, four teams competed in the semifinals in the 8- to 10-year -old flag football league at The Center. Four additional teams vied for the final positions in the championship game for the older community center youth.

Two champions were crowned, bringing another youth flag football season to an end.

In the first game of the night on The Center’s big gridiron, Poppos earned their spot in the 11- to 14-year-old championship game, winning against The Gitt Team.

Root Logix faced Poppos in the big game by winning the semifinal against Ugly Grouper.

Under the bright lights of the Island’s football field, Root Logix came out victorious in the teens’ championship match up with the final score 31-21.

The champions had three standout players among the roster of many of the Island’s athletes. In addition to Hunter Wingate, Carter Cantrell, Charlie Rogers, Ava Harlan and Gabrielle Gilbert, teammates Luke Winsper, Payton Harlan and Harrison Schenerlein made big plays.

Winsper had two rushing touchdowns in the game along with one catch for six points. P. Harlan is credited with throwing for two TDs and rushing for another.

Schenerlein had a receiving touchdown in the win, and Winsper has a sack in the record books for the Root Logix team.

The second-place finishers, Poppos, showed the receiving depth of the squad. Six of the nine players touched the football with catches for yardage. In addition to receptions by Colten Shook, Kaden Quinby, Rowan Benford and Jacob Seim, T.J. Eckert and Connor Samblis had passes for touchdowns.

Eckert took the football into the endzone with a nice run, while Frankie Coleman had a receiving touchdown and sack in the game.

In the last game of the night, Moss Builders won the championship game against Cloud in a very close matchup. The one-point game came down to the extra point by Moss’ Austin Guess.

The Cloud squad played their hearts out. Charlie Neri played quarterback and finished with two passing touchdowns to Landon Sallier.

Noah Rigney supported his team with two catches in the game. Along with Rigney, Luke and Leo Foster, Lucas Signor and Jasmine Sparks took their team all the way to the end of the season.

Mason Moss threw for one touchdown to Matthew Winsper and handed off to Turner Worth for a rushing score in the team’s victory for the 8- to 10-year-old league.

Issac Roadman provided critical field and team support throughout the season and to capturing the season championship.

Adult co-ed sports continue with semifinal play this week. Wednesday night, Sato Real Estate goes up against Allied on The Center’s field at 6:15 p.m.

The following game an hour later matches Burton Brick & Tile and Blalock Walters for the final seat available in the championship game for adult co-ed soccer.

On Thursday night, the adult co-ed flag football semifinal games take place at 7 and 8 p.m. Ugly Grouper takes on Mi-Box and Beach Bums will play Moss Builders.

The final games of the season will take place next week. Two champions will be named to close out the sports season at The Center.

Youth flag football, adult sports in full swing

The stage is set for youth flag football at The Center of Anna Maria Island. In the 8- to 10-year-old league, the small gridiron this week will be the location of the match-up between Moss Builders and Beach Bums, as well as Shady Lady versus Cloud. Top seed Moss Builders was set to capture a seat in the championship game this past Tuesday night.

Root Logix, ranked first going into the playoffs, faces Ugly Grouper in the older youth flag football league, hoping to meet up with team Poppos or The Gitt Team in the final game of the season for the championship title.

Finishing game seven in both the adult co-ed flag football league and adult co-ed soccer league, Sato Real Estate and Burton Brick and Tile go into the playoffs, both with 5-0-2 records. Allied finishes the regular season with a 5-1-1 record to round out the top three teams.

In the four wins, goalkeeper Ryan Moss tops the night with 11 saves for Jiffy Lube in its loss against Sato Real Estate. Mark Rudacille was credited with eight saves in the night, contributing to his team’s win. Sato Real Estate’s Will Kretzmann and Damir Glavan each had single goals in the game.

Teammate Race Arande scored two points for the Sato team to finish the game with the score 4-1.

Burton Brick and Tile split the goalie duties between Jonathan Aragon with six saves and Chris Klotz with seven stops. The scoring for Burton was spread between Kris Yavalar, Klotz and Aragon with solo goals for each. Yavalar’s sister-in-law, Katie Christenson, also had a single goal against The Gitt Team keeper Neil Fellowes.

Zach Leib rounds out the scoring for Burton Brick and Tile with two goals of his own.

In the loss, Fellowes was recorded to have five goals, while the team’s goal scorers were Tanner Zellmar, Jamie Hutchinson and Will Romberger.

Slim’s Place could not find a win in the regular season with another loss against Blalock Walters. David Green and Hyun Kim each managed to get the soccer ball past Blalock goalie Kevin Mulcahy, who had seven saves in the game.

Five of Blalock’s team members put points on the board against Slim’s Place’s Mark Long, keeper for the team. Nick Bouchard and Nate Welch both scored single goals in the game.

Matt Staggs, Chris Scott and Kali Richardson all managed to get their foot on the soccer ball, each credited with two goals in the win against Slim’s Place, finishing the season with a 3-4-0 record.

In the first soccer game of the night, Allied solidly won against Servis First Bank, winning by five goals. The single goal for Servis was scored by Sean Gray.

Servis’ Andrew Sullivan and Nate Talucci worked as the team’s goalkeeper, battling the firepower of Zach Reda with four goals for Allied. Raul Loera and Cody Wright each had goals of their own to start the night of action at The Center.

The coming weeks will determine who will play in the championship games for the adults. Can Sato Real Estate win another adult soccer title? Will Allied capture their first Hayward Cup win? Or will an underdog take it all?

Gitt Team gets second win against Servis

After game six in the adult co-ed soccer league, three teams go into the next week with four wins: Allied, Burton Brick & Tile and Sato Real Estate. Two middle-of-the-pack teams, The Gitt Team and Servis First Bank, met on the pitch last Thursday night, making the competition even closer.

The Gitt Team’s win put them even with the Blalock Walters’ squad with 2-4-0 records. The loss for Servis First Bank put them at a 500 season with one regular-season game left to play.

In the win, Neil Fellowes was credited with five saves for The Gitt Team. Ben Sato had eight stops and Andrew Sullivan prevented five goals on the other side of the field for Servis First Bank.

Always solid on the pitch, Greg Ross had a single goal along with teammate Ugur Durmaz. The two goals by Ross And Durmaz just were not enough against The Gitt Team.

New faces to the league put the points up for The Gitt Team. Tanner Zellmar put two shots past the Servis goalkeeper. Franco Ortiz and Owen Huffman both had solo goals for the winning team, accompanying Robbie Fellowes’ strike that led to another point on the scoreboard.

Recreational sports at The Center continues with youth flag football playoff action this week. On Tuesday night, quarterfinal action took place on the gridiron with Moss Builders and Root Logix both earning byes going into the playoffs as the top-ranked 8- to 10-year-old and 11- to 13-year-old leagues, respectively.

In the youngest competitive recreational league, Tidy MD went against Shady Lady, Cloud battled Rays Ramblings, and Coastline Contractors fought Beach Bums for a place in the semifinals. The tween team matchups put Poppos on the field with HSH, Gulf Drive Café skirmished Ugly Grouper, and Detweillers faced The Gitt Team on the large field.

Moss Builders will play the winner of the matchup between Coastline Contractors and Beach Bums on Tuesday, March 9 at 6:15 p.m. The victor of the game between Gulf Drive Café and Ugly Grouper will meet Root Logix at 6 p.m. for the first championship slot.

Training a new generation of environmental scientists

Training a new generation of environmental scientists

ANNA MARIA – The community scientist program at The Center of Anna Maria Island is getting off to a great start thanks to some help from students at Eckerd College and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium staff.

Small groups of Eckerd College students are coming each Saturday morning to The Center to train with staff from Mote on the equipment they’ll be using. Part of the training involves how to take the water samples and video needed to observe the effects of the mini reefs from Ocean Habitats installed as a part of a fundraiser for the nonprofit. These students are the first of the community volunteers being trained to study the effects of the mini reefs on the local waters and marine life. Students will travel around the Island to the mini reef sites to conduct water testing and video the condition of the reefs. This also helps keep track of all of the reefs and observe any maintenance issues requiring attention. Community scientists will test the water for the presence of harmful algae blooms such as karenia brevis – red tide – keep track of water temperature and pH levels, and study the organisms making the mini reefs their home.

Once the program is better established, The Center’s Director of Development, Jim McDaniel, says he hopes to open it up to Island resident volunteers and others in the community.

The program is the brainchild of McDaniel, who said he hopes to expand it in the future while also providing an important resource in the fight to mitigate the effects of red tide, which can cause fish kills, skin irritation and breathing problems.

Currently, there are 166 mini reefs installed in the waters around Anna Maria Island and west Bradenton as a result of The Center’s partnership with Ocean Habitats.

Moss Builders closes out the week with a win

Moss Builders closes out the week with a win

Another week of youth and adult sports at The Center had two teams grabbing their first win of the season.

To start the week off on a positive note, Raymond Gardner inspired his team to their first victory. With each team going into the game looking for their first win of the season, team Ray’s Ramblings fought for the three-point win against Shady Lady in the 8- to 10-year-old flag football league last Tuesday night.

The next night in adult co-ed soccer action, the Jiffy Lube squad outscored The Gitt Team by four goals, putting up their first win in the spring season, with the final score 6-2.

The week’s ending game was on the adult flag football gridiron. Moss Builders took the solid and early lead in the game, not giving the Sandbar team a chance. The first half ended with the mercy rule instituted. With a 28-point lead, team Moss Builders would start the last minutes of play unable to rush the passer until there was less than a 21-point deficit for Sandbar.

In the second half of action, Sandbar’s Karri Stephens made two touchdown catches. Stephens, a veteran of the league, is one of the best, but unassuming, receivers in the league.

Teammate Ben Sato lit up the field with three scoring receptions and eight total catches in the night. Sato’s solid training routine shows each week on the field, regardless of the sport.

Matteo Ferris, growing into his own in the adult league, threw for four touchdowns and scored a point after a touchdown. Ferris is also credited for sacking Moss Builders’ QB, Ryan Moss.

The ever-present maturing Island youth is making an impact in the community center’s adult leagues. Sandbar’s Jackson Hayes and Tyler Brewer both learned their flag football skills at The Center starting on the small fields in kindergarten.

Years later, Hayes made the statistics book with one TD catch. Brewer caught an extra point throw for two nabs in the game.

Along with Brewer and Hayes, Moss Builders’ Cole Carter played Island youth sports when he moved to Anna Maria Island. Now in the adult league, he is making his own impacts with three catches and one interception in Thursday night’s game.

Three of Moss’ throws were caught by the reliable hands of Jordan Demers. Demers made it into the end zone four times for three TDs and one extra point.

Demers’ ability to read the plays as a defender put him in the right position for two interceptions, rattling the young Sandbar quarterback.

Greg Moss contributed both on offense and defense with three catches and two sacks. Top player and draft pick Dina DeJesus was held to one catch and an extra point.

Contributing to the Moss Builders win, Zach Routh grabbed three catches, including two for 12 points in the team’s second win of the season to end another fun week of sports action on the Island.

Four undefeated teams show dominance

Four undefeated teams show dominance

Four adult recreational sports teams are surfacing as league leaders on the soccer pitch and the gridiron at The Center of Anna Maria Island. With two weeks of regular season play completed, will these undefeated teams take the season to the championship games?

In adult co-ed soccer, no stranger to the top of the ranks, Sato Real Estate starts the season 2-0 going into week three against the other undefeated team, Burton Brick and Tile. The anticipated 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 3 will determine which team falls to the middle of the pack.

In the low scoring game last Wednesday night, Burton’s Olsin Crean scored the only goal in the game. The goalies for both teams were put to work with 11 saves by Jonathan Aragon for the winning team, while Steve Oelfke had 14 recorded saves for Allied.

All of the games were close in score and the battle between Sato Real Estate and Servis First Bank was no different. Will Kretzmann returned to the league this season with two goals in the game for Sato. Teammate Race Arande had two of his own in the win.

Also with two goals, Servis’ Kevin Roan lead his team in scoring. The team’s third goal came from Ugur Durmaz.

Thursday night, the soccer field was converted for American football action. Much like adult soccer, two teams finished week two undefeated. At the top of the list moving into week three are Beach Bums and Ugly Grouper.

On Thursday, Feb. 4 Ugly Grouper faces Moss Builders with a 1-1 record and Beach Bums meets Sandbar also with one loss and one win.

Slim’s Place’s failure to convert on the point after the touchdown lost the game for the team against top-ranked Beach Bums. JB Shuck connected with Jacob Roberts twice to put 12 points on the scoreboard for Slim’s.

A single point made the difference for Beach Bums with the extra point, giving them the victory. Quarterback Matt Briley hit Anthony Mannino for both TDs. Mannino’s hot hands grabbed the point after an interception in the game.

In the third game of the night, Ugly Grouper easily took the win against Salty Printing. Despite the veteran experience of the Salty squad, Ugly Grouper kept their opponent out of the end zone and scored 33 points in the game.

Three interceptions for touchdowns by Ugly Grouper’s Brandon Kull, Octavious Cole and Melissa Acevedo gave them 18 points. Kull found Cole and Jaret Rojas for the two touchdowns.

In a two-point conversion, Cam Winston found the endzone for Ugly Grouper.

With the positive statistics for the Salty Printing team, Jesse Kunc made an interception, while teammates Tim Shaughnessy, Miguel Alicea, Danny Murphy, Zach Anabtawi, Charles Polis and Bri Roberts all made positive passing yardage for their team.

With maintenance being done on the fields at The Center, the youth flag football players will take the field again on Tuesday, Feb. 2 for more gridiron fun.

Let the games begin: Another year of action at The Center

Youth sports and adult co-ed flag football and soccer started another set of seasons last week at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Week one of action started for the grown-up kids on Wednesday night, Jan. 13, with adult soccer.

This season’s team rosters witnessed a mixing up of standard team lineups. On paper, the Jiffy Lube squad, with the strong games of the Anderson brothers, Sean Flynn’s versatile play and speed on the field, Eric Pullen’s scoring power, Robb Marshall’s superb stopping ability, Tim Holly’s youth and tenacity, and Lyn Clarke’s wisdom and experience, could be the team to beat.

Against Slim’s Place, both teams showed this could be anyone’s season, with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.

With a new sponsor to the league, now veteran Zach Reda, along with past teammates Cody Wright, Clancy Vaughn and Cole Peterson, took the field with other league veterans to get their Allied team a solid win over the strong Blalock Walters team. Despite goals by Matt Staggs and Chris Scott, Allied scored seven goals in the game and won 7-2.

Reda had a hat trick, leading his team in scoring and tied with Chris Klotz in the league with one game completed.

Klotz’s team, Burton Brick and Tile, won 6-3 against Servis First Bank in the third game of the night. In the loss, Kevin Roman scored two goals and Ben Sato had nine saves.

Also with two goals, Burton Bricks’ Zach Leib started the season strong once again.

In the final soccer game of the night, Sato Real Estate put a win in the record books to start the season. Their victory came against The Gitt Team. Finishing with the score at 4-2, Josh Sato, Amy Ivin, Hakan Toka, and Race Arande each had a goal in the game.

Robert Fellowes eluded the Sato Real Estate goalkeeper twice for his team’s two points.

The next night, in flag football action, the adults took to the Island gridiron for four exciting games to start the season.

In the first game, youth sports standout Jackson Hayes was credited with a touchdown pass for Sandbar in 40-27 first-game victory, as well as single point conversion reception. Matteo Ferris threw the other three touchdown passes and had an interception in the game.

Sandbar’s Tyler Brewer had two catches, one for the point after a touchdown.

Salty Printing’s Shaughnessy family trio, Mike, Bri and Tim, took the field against former teammate Karri Stephens for the first time in many seasons.

Team captain, Tim Shaughnessy had two passing touchdowns in addition to a scoring pass by Danny Murphy. Murphy and T. Shaughnessy also had rushing touchdowns in the loss.

The two interceptions, caught by Stephens and Ferris may have been the deciding factor in the match-up.

In a closer scoring game, Beach Bums won by three points, 21-18, against Ryan Moss and Moss Builders. Quarterback Matt Briley hit Rueben Young twice for touchdowns, with a single touchdown throw to Anthony Mannino for the win.

In addition to the six points, Mannino had an interception against the Moss Builder’s squad.

Quarterback Ryan Moss hit friend Jordan Demers twice, cousin Greg Moss thrice, Cole Carter four times, and Dina DeJesus for five catches, including two for touchdowns.

Moss had a rushing score of his own, while his cousin caught Briley for two defensive sacks. Despite Demers’ two interceptions, Moss Builders could not pull off the win.

Ugly Grouper scored 32 points against team Mi-Box lead by Dominick Otteni, who scored 19 in the first game of the season. Each team finished the game with a single interception by the team captain.

Captain Brandon Kull, is also noted with three touchdown throws and one scoring catch for his Ugly Grouper team.

Chad Woods leads the league with nine receptions for his Mi-Box team, including one for a score. Woods was supported by his fellow scoring teammates Otteni and Dylan Doyle.

In the win, each of the Ugly Grouper players had a catch in the game. Octavious Cole had the most for his team with five grabs, followed by Melissa Acevedo with four catches, and Mark Anthony and Cory Banks each with three.

Cam Winston and Jaret Rojas had single nabs in their team’s first win of the season.

To end the night, Solid Rock Construction and Slim’s Place played a nail biter that ended in a tie after regulation time.

Slim’s Place took the win in overtime, with quarterback JB Shuck throwing a solid four scoring receptions to Cruz Rodriguez, Tim Holly and Jacob Robertson. Holly had an additional five points in the game for Slim’s Place.

Connor Haughey served as the quarterback for Solid Rock Construction, with three passing touchdowns to team captain Jon Moss.

In addition to Jesse Skipper’s and Zack Long’s extra points after the touchdowns, Haughey had a Pick Six taking the Solid Rock team to overtime.

Slim’s Place overtime win puts them in a four-way tie for first place with Ugly Grouper, Beach Bums and Sandbar going into week two.

County officials give COVID-19 vaccine update

MANATEE COUNTY – A new round of vaccines have arrived in Manatee County, prompting 311 operators to start booking appointments for Jan. 14. After these appointments are booked, county officials hope that more vaccines will quickly arrive for distribution but they’re not sure when they’ll get here.

During today’s Manatee County commission meeting, Director of Public Safety Jake Saur reported that 1,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine were received on Jan. 11, with 900 of those earmarked to be distributed to area seniors age 65 and older and 100 set aside to be given to first responders and frontline healthcare workers. Saur said that 311 operators began contacting seniors randomly selected from the standby vaccine pool just after the announcement was made to county commissioners at around 9:10 a.m. with the expectation that all appointments would be filled by 4 p.m. today for distribution on Thursday, Jan. 14 at the Tom Bennett Park drive-thru vaccination location.

As more vaccines are received, Saur said there will be more announcements through social media and other outlets about appointments being booked to alert seniors signed up for the standby pool. Unfortunately, he said the timing and amount of vaccines coming to the county are uncertain and sporadic at this time due to vaccine dose availability.

Seniors signed up through the Manatee County standby pool should look for a phone call from 941-742-4300. If 311 operators call and no one answers the phone, they’ll make one more attempt before putting the person’s name back into the system to be randomly selected again at a future date. If you miss a call from 311 operators, you’re asked to not call back, they’ll call you. If you’ve already registered your information with the standby pool there is no reason to register a second time. Any duplicate registrations will be deleted. If you’re having trouble signing up for the standby pool through the website, you can call 311 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to enter your name in the lottery-style pool.

As of today, Saur said that nearly 60,000 individuals or couples have registered in the COVID-19 vaccination standby pool in Manatee County. Given that some of those registrations are couples who are allowed to register together, he said the number of people in the system is closer to 95,600. Manatee County has more than 100,000 residents at age 65 or older. COVID-19 vaccinations in Manatee County are open to anyone meeting the age requirement regardless of residency. Anyone receiving a first dose of the vaccine in Manatee County must receive the mandatory second dose here as well.

The 1,000 vaccine doses were a surprise with Manatee County officials previously told to not expect any first doses this week. Some first responders and frontline healthcare workers who received their first dose of the vaccine in December were already scheduled to begin receiving second doses at the Public Safety Center in east Bradenton on Jan. 13.

To date, Saur said 5,437 vaccines had been administered in Manatee County at either the Bennett Park or Public Safety Center vaccination site. Currently, these are the only two vaccination sites open in Manatee County, though Saur said if needed there are plans to open a third site. Director of Development Jim McDaniel said in an email to The Sun that he’s also volunteered The Center of Anna Maria Island’s Magnolia Avenue campus in Anna Maria as a potential future vaccination site for the county.

With the federal government announcing today that a push is moving forward to have states release the vaccine doses held back to guarantee second vaccines for those people who’ve already received a first one, Saur said he’s unsure of how things will progress now at Manatee County run vaccination sites. He added that he still plans for anyone who’s received a first vaccine dose from the county to be able to receive a second vaccine dose here. Saur said that there is a three- to four-day window for people to receive a second vaccine around the 21- or 28-day recommendation. Pfizer vaccines require the second dose to be administered 21 days after the first dose while Moderna vaccines require the second dose to be administered 28 days after the first dose.

Area seniors can expect to receive a phone call from 311 operators a week before their second dose is due to book an appointment. Saur said that current plans are to administer the second doses at the Public Safety Center with the ability to administer two days worth of second dose vaccines in one day.

Manatee County officials will never ask for any financial information when booking a vaccine appointment. Vaccines received by the county are available to the public free of charge.

Bradenton native Spencer Moeller is a long way from his early days of playing indoor soccer at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Now the 26-year-old is playing soccer professionally with the Los Angeles Force.

Taking a few moments to speak with The Sun about his career, Moeller said he credits his time at The Center as the reason he keeps playing soccer. Evolving from his time playing locally at the YMCA, G.T. Bray and IMG Academy, Moeller’s not just passionate about playing soccer, it’s what he’s worked for his entire life.

While playing soccer throughout his school-age years, Moeller said he dreamed of playing professionally. Those plans were slightly derailed when he broke his arm, pushing him toward college soccer instead of the professional leagues.

After playing his freshman year in Memphis, he transferred to a school in New Jersey where he played for a year and a half before getting injured in 2015 and cut in the spring of 2016. Due to league rules, Moeller said he had to sit out for a year before transferring to a Kentucky school, Lindsey Wilson College, where he played for two seasons and graduated in May of 2018. After college, Moeller traveled to Europe to play with international teams before returning to the United States and being signed by the Force in August 2020, a feat he said is basically unheard of at age 26; he said most players are signed to professional teams for the first time in their late teens or early 20s.

While he was working toward playing in professional soccer, Moeller was also spending time working on another project – sharing his story online with other soccer hopefuls.

Moeller started a video blog in 2007 that he uses to help other soccer players see the reality behind the dream. His more than 34,000 followers have watched him grow up in the game, suffer injuries, recover, get past stumbling blocks and more, all while he continues to portray a positive message of continuing to fight for your dreams.

“My story is about persistence and refusing to be denied,” he said.

For him, Moeller said the pressure to succeed in the sport is a lot higher and he wants to give back by helping younger players create a plan of action and not give up on their dreams due to a setback, excuses or being told “no.”

“I thrive on pressure,” he said. “I thrive when people are against me.”

In addition to the YouTube channel where he shares his personal journey, Moeller also has a website where he shares training videos for soccer players. All of his content is provided for free because he said the point is to give back and help others, not to monetize his experience.

Right now, Moeller is living his dream, despite COVID-19 precautions slowing the team’s game schedule and preventing fans from being in the stadium. In the next phase of his life, he said he envisions several different opportunities, but one that he’d like to see become reality is a professional soccer team for his hometown of Bradenton.

“I just want to be able to give back and help kids get into the game,” he said.

To follow along with Moeller’s life and career, follow him online at his website and on his YouTube channel.

The final games of the season in adult co-ed sports were played last week with Signature Granite winning the Hayward Cup for soccer and Slim’s Place taking the flag football championship.

After winning the semifinal game against Ugly Grouper 9-2, Signature Granite solidified their place in the final game of the soccer season against Slim’s Place.

Slim’s Place also scored nine goals in their semifinal matchup against Sato Real Estate.

Signature Granite dominated the final game with seven unanswered goals. Zach Leib led the scoring for his team with three goals in the game. Lindsey Styka had two goals and two assists in the big game.

Despite struggles in the backfield, Slim’s Place’s keeper Ryan Moss had nine saves recorded in the game. Steve Oelfke had four saves for Signature Granite.

Goals by Olsin Crean and Ugur Durmaz secured the win for the team lead by veteran Kris Yavalar, as well as the return of Zoran Kolega and Toby Wickland to the league.

Last Thursday night in adult flag football action, Slim’s Place defeated Gulfview Windows and doors 23-12, putting them into the championship game.

The second semifinal game was a close one with Sandbar coming out on top against Moss Builders, 18-17.

In the final game of the night and the season, Slim’s Place eked out the win against Sandbar 34-33.

Connor Haughey led the Slim’s Place squad, while putting in the record books three passing touchdowns as the QB. Haughey also had two scoring receptions, an interception and two points after the touchdown in the championship game.

Keith McQuillen threw for two touchdowns and had two points after adding to the Slim’s Place team stats. Dominick Otteni and Luis Campos contributed to the Slim’s Place scoring with receiving yards that put them in the end zone.

The four throws for touchdowns by quarterback Chase Richardson just were enough. Anthony Mannino found himself on the receiving end of the Richardson passes for touchdowns.

Mannino’s night included a pick six and an extra point conversion play. Tim Holly scored the other TD with a nice grab of the Richardson throw.

To round out the scoring, Dylan Doyle scored two points after the touchdown for Sandbar.

The efforts of the Sandbar squad just were not quite enough against Slim’s Place, this season’s adult flag football champions at The Center.

Moss Builders tops Ugly Grouper in Center football playoffs

In a much-anticipated match up, teams Ugly Grouper and Moss Builders took the field at The Center Thursday night in the first playoff game of the season.

The two team captains and close friends off the gridiron, Ray Gardner for Ugly Grouper and Ryan Moss for Moss Builders, each season look forward to the competitive, but friendly, game of co-ed flag football.

This game would be not different. The action started the same, with Gardner running into the game lighting up the field with his speed and agility.

The energy of Thursday night’s game would quickly change after Gardner fell to the ground grabbing his ankle in pain. Gardner, players on the field and even spectators heard the “pop” that every athlete dreads.

Credited with a throw for a touchdown and two rushing scores before the Achilles injury took him out of the game, Gardner will watch from the sidelines as Moss Builders moves on to the semifinals after the 46-20 win.

Moss’ brother Jon Moss threw for three touchdowns, just coming short of older brother’s four TD throws.

At the receiving end of the play, J. Moss had one TD catch along with James Roadman. J. Moss is also credited with an extra point nab in the end zone.

New to the adult flag football league, graduating from the youth league last year, Cole Carter caught the ball for a total of 14 points, with two touchdowns and two extra point conversions.

The hot hands of the night belonged to Moss Builders’ Evelyn Long with three receptions, putting up 18 points of her own. Husband Zack Long added a point to the scoreboard with a successful extra point catch.

Despite the season ending loss, Ugly Grouper’s Chad Woods scored seven points in the game, along with an extra point by Octavious Cole.

Moss Builders meets Sandbar in the second semifinal game Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at The Center. Sandbar easily defeated Beach Bums 51-21 to secure their spot in the next round of play.

Slim’s Place’s victory over Progressive Cabinetry puts them on the field with Gulfview Windows and Doors in the first semifinal game at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Gulfview won against Solid Rock Construction in a close one, ending the Shaughnessy family’s season before reaching the big game.

The championship adult co-ed flag football game is scheduled for that same night, Thursday, Nov. 12 at 9 p.m. at The Center.

Youth soccer champs named at The Center

Youth soccer champs named at The Center

After a long-awaited season start, another group of youth soccer champions was crowned at The Center last Tuesday night, as the fall co-ed soccer season came to an end.

Finishing with a cookout and awards, team Progressive Cabinetry and team Gulf Drive Café each won the last game of the season to earn top of the league honors for their age group.

Seasoned veteran of the youth soccer scene on the Island, Jack McCarthy, scored both goals for Progressive Cabinetry in the 8- to 10-year-old league.

In the single goal championship game, Gulf Drive Café was named the 11- to 14-year-old youth soccer champions at The Center. – Monica Simpson | Sun

Throughout the season, McCarthy played alongside competitive teammates, including goalkeeper Jack Zaccagnino, who had seven recorded saves in the game. Zaccagnino, also a long-time Island player, was joined by his brother, Jesse, Cale Rudacille, Camden Rudacille, Brooklyn Melancon, Jackson Kennedy, Victoria Perry and Malia Keith.

Growing up playing at The Center, all of these young players grew their talents thanks to their volunteer coaches, Scott Rudacille and Steven Perry.

The selfless volunteer coaches in the youth soccer league worked hard all year to keep their players active on the field, taught them new skills, reinforced the basics, and made sure they had fun.  Coach Rudacille and Coach Perry accomplished this all while winning the championship.

Despite the loss, the Beach Bums team had a great season, finishing with the same regular season as Progressive, 3-1-1. Beach Bums came up just short despite wonderful play at the net by keeper Ryan Cyrus with five saves in the game.

In the five-game regular season, the Beach Bums team fought hard and put victories on the scoreboard with their talented squad. Julie Baugher, Jasmine Sparks and Lexi Baugher made solid plays for their teams and proved why co-ed youth soccer can be so exciting to play and watch.

Rounding out the Beach Bums soccer family were Tomas Bartos, Hayden Eurice, Collin Bankert, Jackson Rosas, and Oliver Tirpak, each making the fall soccer season a memorable one.

Gulf Drive Café won the single goal game against Tidy MD Cleaning in the 11- to 14-year-old league championship match. In the goal to help his team with the win was Evan Talucci with seven saves in the game.

Talucci’s Tidy counterpart, Emma Raulerson, had five saves to be proud of.

Tommy Baugher scored the lone goal for Gulf Drive Cafe while being coached by his dad, Tom Baugher, and playing alongside his sister, Eve. Dennis Gallager, Carter Eurice, Aidan Gannon and Katelyn Cecil made their critical contributions during the season to get the team to the championship game.

Gulf Drive player Ava Harlan gave it her all with father/coach Gary Harlan helping to further the development of the young Island players.

On the other end of the coin, Tidy MD Cleaning was the slight favorite in the game due to their 3-1-1 record and their roster. Victor Albrecht, usually in goal, helped take his team to the big game.

Frankie Coleman, Caden Quinby, Angelina Albrecht, Jaden Sparks and Cala Ryan rounded out the Tidy MD squad that filled the season with soccer action at The Center’s pitch.

Each of the teams gave it their all, but there could only be two champions last Tuesday night.

Win, lose or draw, all of the players are winners by just getting on the field, playing soccer, being with friends, and living a normal life on the Island with youth co-ed sports.

Baugher and Eurice bring home the win

The first game of the night last Tuesday started the action off with a zero-zero regular playtime score. The 8- to 10-year-old co-ed soccer league at The Center is winding down to a close with plenty of energy and enthusiasm.

With a tied score and no time left on the clock, team Moss Builders and team Beach Bums put their best legs to the test in the shootout. Only one team would be victorious.

The scoreless ballgame was not for the lack of trying. Moss Builders’ goalkeeper Xane Flores made five saves in the game, while counterpart Cyrus Ryan had nine stops as the goalie for Beach Bums.

On the penalty kick mark for Beach Bums, Julie Baugher started off the shootout with a goal. Moss Builders’ Mason Moss led off the kicking for his team. His miss was followed by fellow teammates Dylan Sato and Liam McGinnis.

The early scoring start by Beach Bums was short-lived. Teammates Cyrus Ryan, Jackson Rosas and Tomas Bartos could not find the goal as they took their shots alternating with Moss Builders.

Austin Guess took the line, hoping to match the point scored by Baugher. Guess’ shot did not give Moss Builders the goal they needed to tie the single Beach Bums point.

Beach Bums’ Hayden Eurice sealed the deal for his team with a nice shot that was not stopped by the Moss Builders’ goalie to end the game, giving Beach Bums another win.

Ugly Grouper bests Skinny’s Place

Ugly Grouper bests Skinny’s Place

After being shut out last week, the Ugly Grouper adult soccer squad won over Skinny’s Place. Skinny’s Place was hoping to earn their first win of the season, but the hot feet of Chris Scott, Nate Welch and Greg Ross gave Ugly Grouper a win.

The tone for the game was set in the first half of the game and continued early into the second half of play. Tough and aggressive play by both sides put Ross in position to take a penalty kick.

The goalie for the other team, Hayden Brewer, made the stop, sending the soccer ball sailing behind the net.

Taking the corner kick, Ross put the ball in perfect position for another Ugly Grouper goal.

On the kickoff after the Ugly Grouper point, Katie Christenson sent the ball off the leg of opponent Chris Culhane past Ugly Grouper keeper Robb Marshall for an own goal.

After giving Skinny’s Place a goal, Ugly Grouper came back with the seventh goal of the game from a Welch free kick off the goalie.

Despite the goals of Christenson, Chase Diaz and a hat trick by Kevin Bell, Skinny’s Place just could not get the ball past Marshall enough times.

Week five of adult co-ed flag football ended with Sandbar and Solid Rock Construction on top of the leader board with 4-1 records with the Sandbar win in the game that put the number one and two against each other on the gridiron.

Sandbar’s Chase Richardson threw for three touchdowns to the hot hands of Anthony Mannino, ending the game with a total of eight receptions.

On defense, Richardson had two interceptions, one for a touchdown.

Solid Rock’s Danny Murphy and Bri Roberts were the big scorers in the game for their team. Along with an interception, Murphy had six catches in the game including one for a touchdown and two extra points nabs, and one interception.

Roberts continued her offensive success with two touchdown catches for Solid Rock Construction from brother Tim Shaughnessy.

More than midway through the regular season, the Shaughnessy-Roberts duo, along with the patriarch of the team, Mike Shaughnessy, fight for another championship to end the season with their veteran squad team.
