Goalies keep scoring down in youth soccer

A team can’t score if it can’t get past the goalie. That was reaffirmed Tuesday night at The Center with four youth soccer games, all with total goals less than four and the largest point spread at two goals.

In the first 8- to 10-year-old age group game of the night, Beach Bums bested Moss Builders 1-0 on a goal scored by Hayden Eurice. Eurice also made two critical saves toward his team’s win. Teammate Ryan Cyrus also had two saves in the game.

Moss Builders’ Austin Guess had two saves in the matchup, along with a single stop by Xane Flores.

Goalies Liam Nunez and Jack Zaccagnino each had six saves for the Miz & Hiz Biz and Progressive Cabinetry soccer squads, respectively, in a 3-1 win for Progressive. The two goals by Jack McCarthy and solo score off the foot of Jesse Zaccagnino earned Progressive Cabinetry the win.

Nixon Conner, for Miz & Hiz Biz, scored the lone goal for his team. At the net in the keeper position, Bam Gartmen had three saves of his own for the Biz team.

Tidy MD won the first game in the older age group battles on the pitch. In the game, Slim’s Place’s Elek Brisson had one save and one recorded assist. Teammate Madison Ferrari had the only goal for the team in the 3-1 loss.

Three players protected the net for the victors. Tidy’s Victor Albrecht showed his strength in the goal with three saves. Albrecht also had a hat trick in the game, scoring all three points for team Tidy MD.

Both Frankie Coleman and Jayden Sparks prevented a score.

The final matchup of the night finished in a 0-0 score. The lack of points on the scoreboard does not mean shots were not taken, however.

With the shots, goalkeeper Benjamin Young had eight stops for Ugly Grouper, while Gulf Drive Café’s Dennis Gallager had four of his own. Evan Talucci had four saves in the game, giving the Gulf Drive squad a total of eight saves as well to end another night of youth soccer on the Island.

Recreational sports in full swing at The Center

Recreational sports in full swing at The Center

With the conclusion of the adult co-ed soccer recreational league season and the awarding of the Hayward Cup, The Center field lights are lit three nights a week with youth soccer, adult flag football and another season of adult soccer.

The kiddos start the week on Tuesday nights with soccer players as young as 3 years old getting touches on the ball. Two youth soccer age groups field nine teams sponsored by local businesses whose financial contribution helps to ensure that every child in the community stays active playing sports.

Looking at two more regular season weeks of play, the records are tight with Beach Bums, Moss Builders and Progressive Cabinetry, all with a 1-0-1 record in the 8-to 10-year-old league. HSH enters Week 4 with one win and two losses.

Team Miz & Hiz Biz, a new sponsor of the league, is still seeking its first win going into the next game with a 0-2-1 record.

The older kids have two teams on top with a 2-0-1 record. Both Tidy MD and Gulf Drive Café are being chased by team Ugly Grouper and Slim’s Place.

Scoring for Progressive Cabinetry in their win against HSH was Jack McCarthy with two goals and Jesse Zaccagnino with a single.

In the tied ballgame, Nixon Conner scored a solo goal for Miz & Hiz Biz only to be matched by Beach Bums’ Ryan Cyrus.

Hammish Robertson was the first to score in the older youth league for Ugly Grouper against Slim’s Place, which was scoreless.

Youth soccer action ended in another tie with Gulf Drive Café’s Carter Eurice scoring the team’s only goal. Tidy MD’s Victor Albrecht scored the single point for his team.

Wednesday night, the adults lit up the field with flag football action.

Fresh at the end of the last season, these tried and true players took to the pitch without missing a beat.

The first game of the night started with a Signature Granite blowout against Sato Real Estate, ending with the score 9-1. Sato’s scoring was spread among the roster. Zach Leib and Ugur Durmaz both had a hat trick in the match, with two for Kris Yavalar and a single by Olsin Crean.

The other three were close matchups.

Solid Rock Construction took the second win of the night by a single point against Skinny’s Place. Blalock Walters followed suit with its victory against Ugly Grouper. Slim’s Place did not waver from the pattern with their W in the game against Progressive Cabinetry.

Thursday night lights came on for week two of adult flag football play at The Center. The outcomes of the games were close until the last game of the night and the last matchup of the week at the community center.

The ladies of the league brought study hands to the field. Moss Builders’ Evelyn Long scored a receiving touchdown in the 35-25 game against Gulfview Windows and Doors.

Despite the loss, McKenna Ainger put up statistics as the quarterback for a touchdown for her Sandbar team. In the win against Sandbar, league veteran Dina DeJesus showed why she is a force on the field with seven catches, one for six points, in addition to extra point scoring.

In the following game, Bri Roberts had three receptions in the game for the Solid Rock Construction’s one-point win against Slim’s Place. Roberts is credited with a critical one-point conversion.

Ugly Grouper’s Avory Lavalliere, the team’s required female player, scored two touchdowns and had an extra point in the blowout win against Progressive Cabinetry to end the night’s action.

Beach Bums crowned Hayward champions

Beach Bums crowned Hayward champions

The weather finally cooperated last Thursday night at the Island’s community center. Top seed Beach Bums took the field against the second-best Sato Real Estate team to see who would be crowned the Hayward Cup champions.

At the end of the night, the Sato family would celebrate the winning of the final game of the season with Josh Sato playing for Sato Real Estate, the family company headed by the matriarch, Barbara Sato, and oldest brother, Jason Sato.

On the opposite side of the field, Jason Sato played for his wife’s company, Beach Bums.

Josh Sato is no stranger to the Hayward Cup game, leading his team to win the championship in the spring season of 2017, becoming just the third team to win the cup.

The love of the game and the friendly but fierce competition found at The Center is what the Satos love about adult soccer on the Island, and especially at The Center. Paul “Ace” Hayward shared that sentiment.

The Hayward Cup became the official prize for the co-ed adult soccer recreational league at The Center after years of action on the pitch. The championship was officially named to honor a long-time league player and Island friend to many of the players still hitting the soccer field every Thursday night.

Starting in spring 2016, after Hayward lost his battle to cancer, The Center has celebrated his life and contribution to the game at least twice a year with the playing of the cup game.

In this season’s cup, the Sato brothers played alongside old friends and new faces to the league. Veterans like Lyn Clarke, now 80 years old, scuffled on the field against Kevin Roman, a young veteran player.

Despite being one of the best goalies this season, longtime league player Steve Oelfke could not make the win happen for his Sato Real Estate squad. Both Oelfke and Jason Sato, keeper for Beach Bums, had seven recorded saves in the game.

Scoring talent on each team put points on the statistics for Sarah Liggins, Josh Sato and Hakan Toka, with single goals for Sato Real Estate. Teammate Connor Bystrom, the hotfoot for his team this season, had two points to his name in the game.

Scoring for the win, Beach Bums had two players each with a single goal in the game: Kevin Roman and Andrew Sullivan. Connor Haughey, Associate Director at The Center, scored two points and was noted to have two assists. Yuri Pereira put two points on the scoreboard for the Beach Bums squad.

Amy Ivin, always a top pick in the draft, crushed two goals, helping her team win the Hayward Cup.

With the win, the Beach Bums team became the ninth recipient of the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup. There has never been a repeat winner since the inception of the Cup. Which sponsor will be the first to capture the cup twice?

Soccer championship game delayed

Soccer championship game delayed

With the championship game scheduled as the last of the night and the clouds and rain threatening to stop adult soccer play at The Center, two games were completed before a power outage ended action on the pitch.

The first game of the night ended with team Sato Real Estate capturing the first of two spots in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Championship Cup game by beating a talented Moss Builders squad by three goals.

Former Ross Built team member Connor Bystrom got a hat trick last Thursday night, with supporting goals by team captain Josh Sato and Hakan Toka. With seven saves by goalie Steve Oelfke and a single recorded assist by Murap Akay, the Sato team goes on to the final game with a date and time yet to be determined.

The 10 saves by keeper Zack Long, solo assist by Brent Moss, and points scored by Danny Anderson and team captain Ryan Moss just were not enough, making it their last game of the season.

As the rain continued to threaten, the second semifinal game was played. Underdogs – but highly effective – Vintage Beach had nothing to lose playing the first seed team Beach Bums for the last seat at the championship game table.

Team captain Joey Hutchinson scored three points for his Vintage Beach team, while Amy Ivin matched the scoring shots for the Beach Bums team.

The additional two points put on the scoreboard by teammate Sean Flynn just were not enough, as the Beach Bums squad put a total of 10 points up in lights on The Center’s scoreboard.

Three of Beach Bums’ players scored two goals each: Connor Haughey, Yuri Pereira and Kevin Roman. Andrew Sullivan had a lone goal and five saves for the team, with an additional five nabs by Haughey during his time as the goalkeeper.

Due to the power outage, the championship game was delayed. The crowning of the Hayward Cup champion remains much anticipated.

Soccer playoffs begin at The Center

With nine teams in the league, the ninth seed team was destined not to make the playoffs. Last place Gulfview Windows, finishing with a record of 2-4-2, found itself out of contention with a tie against Blalock Walters last Thursday night.

The two goals by both Daniel Adan and Keith Mahoney, along with a single by Raul Loera, just was not enough for the Gulfview team.

Five points were put on the scoreboard by the Blalock offense. Matthew Plummer nailed two shots. Teammates Austin Nutting and Matthew Staggs had solo goals in the game, contributing to the team’s scoring.

Beach Bums solidified the first place seed with their 7-4 win against Moss Builders. Kevin Roman had the hot foot with five goals in the game for the winning team.

Ryan Moss, Aaron Parkin and Tim Holly were the scorers for Moss Builders in their loss, putting them in the #7 position going into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

Leading the pack early in the season, Sato Real Estate ended the regular season in second place. Their win Thursday pushed them past the other top contenders, Ross Built Construction and Solid Rock Construction.

In another tie ballgame, Ross Built Construction and Signature Granite each snuck three soccer balls past the defending goalie. The late game included goals by Greg and Jake Ross, as well as Garrett Furman for Ross Built Construction.

Zack Lieb and Kris Yavalar scored the three points for Signature Granite.

The top scorers of the league finishing the regular season are Chris Scott and Daniel Adan with 17 goals each. Roman finished a close second. scoring 16 goals in the nine weeks of friendly competition.

Joey Hutchison’s statistics note eight assists in the season to top the charts. Hutchison is followed by Amy Ivin, Parkin, Scott and Danny Anderson with seven assists each.

The league’s goalkeepers were kept very busy in the eight games that they played in The Center’s summer league. Moss topped the charts with 63 saves. Steve Oelfke had 62 stops with Mark Long in third getting in the way of 57 shots.

The playoff season starts Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. with Solid Rock Construction going head-to-head against Vintage Beach. The second playoff game has Moss Builders versus Ross Built Construction on The Center’s pitch.

Top-ranked Beach Bums faces former champions Blalock Walters at 8 p.m. The last game of the night puts Sato Real Estate on the field with Signature Granite vying for the last semifinal seat.

Adult co-ed soccer kicks off another season

Adult co-ed soccer kicks off another season

The excitement of the adult flag football season’s grand finale leads right into the next recreational sports league at The Center – adult co-ed soccer. Trading football cleats for soccer boots, the men and women gathered once again on the Island’s main field.

With the quick turnaround of the sports season, early season schedule conflicts and summer commitments, some of the squads found themselves missing key players.

Ross Built Construction, playing without their usual front man, Connor Bystrom, received their first win of the season by forfeit when Solid Rock Construction could not man the field.

Bystrom, now wearing a Sato Real Estate jersey, had two goals in the second game of the night against Blalock Walters. Sato Real Estate took the win with an additional two points by Murat Akay and a solo goal by Josh Sato. Teammate Steve Oelfke, wearing the goalie jersey, had eight saves in the game.

Protecting the goal on the other end of the field, keeper Trey Horne was credited with nine saves for Blalock Walters. Top player Matthew Staggs put two points on the scoreboard, with another point contributed by Austin Nutting in the 5-3 loss.

In the last seconds of the game, Beach Bums was handed their first loss of the season, despite six saves by Jason Sato and two goals by Kevin Roman. The team’s female player, and arguably one of the best players in the league, Amy Ivin was held to a single point along with Robert Fellowes.

Vintage Beach’s top female player, Clancy Vaughn, took to the net and made 10 saves in the game. Niel Fellowes found the net once with a strike, while teammate Joey Hutchinson, with four goals in the night, showed why he is a force to be contained on the soccer field.

In the last game played last Thursday night, Moss Builders faced Gulfview Windows and Doors; neither team included the goalkeeping talents of Jordan DeMers as typically seen in past seasons.

Returning to the league after a long absence, Brent Moss topped the scoring for Moss Builders with two goals. His uncle, Ed Moss, put one in the net in addition to teammate Ashley Friszman. Friszman returns to the league after an injury kept her from playing most of the games last season.

Ryan Moss spent most of the game protecting his team’s goal. Moss was credited with 10 saves in the win.

Scoring was spread among four of the Gulfview squad. Daniel Adan, Jesse Kunc, Raul Loera and Nate Talucci all put a point on the scoreboard for their team in the close loss against Moss Builders to close out the night of soccer at the Island community center.

In their loss, Pool America’s Gerardo Urbiola scored three times, Klotz scored two goals and Omar Polar put it in the net once, giving the team their six goals.

The youth flag football league came to an end this week with championship play on Tuesday night.

Progressive Cabinetry shatters Gulfview Windows and Doors

Progressive Cabinetry shatters Gulfview Windows and Doors

ANNA MARIA – The veteran Moss Builders squad squashed the young Ugly Grouper team’s dreams of its first victory last Thursday night.

At the last 3.7 seconds, Jon Moss of Moss Builders, playing without team captain Ray Gardner, threw the game-tying touchdown to Chad Woods. The successful point-after attempt pushed Moss Builders ahead of Ugly Grouper to end the game with the score 19-20.

With a 30-minute rain delay during the previous game, the second game of the night put the football in the hands of a strong Progressive Cabinetry team. The youthful talents of captain Connor Haughey and Brandon Kull proved to be a fierce combination.

Early scoring by the Progressive team started with a reception by Ben Sato and Kull. Kull’s catch of the quarterbacks’ spot-on throw led to a touchdown, followed by Joey Carder’s extra point for a 7-0 lead.

On offense, Gulfview Windows and Doors continued the scoring with a touchdown of its own. Gulfview’s Jordan DeMers made huge yardage on his first catch and run after from the Ryan Moss toss.

Team captain Moss’ accurate arm was a little off Thursday night, but he still managed to get the football into the hands of Brandin Holcomb for the team’s first TD. The missed extra point put the score to 7-6.

Progressive Cabinetry’s next possession ended in another visit to the end zone with a spinning reception and the point after by Haughey, advancing the score to 14-6.

The next series of possession resulted in three downs and out for each team. With less than a minute on the scoreboard for the first half of play, Kull scored his second touchdown, but Progressive could not convert on the extra point.

An interception by DeMers ended the first half with the score 20-6, with Progressive in the lead.

The second half of the game started with both teams looking a little flat. On its third offensive possession of the half, Gulfview scored another six points with Holcomb’s second TD catch.

Answering back, Kull found himself in the Gulfview end zone, giving his team a 14-point lead with the score 26-12.

Taking control of the offensive result, Moss put his own reception for a touchdown in the stats book. Moss’ TD catch and run silenced defender Kull’s taunting on the field comments.

With the scoreboard showing a score of 26-19 and less than five minutes left in the game, Jake Parsons got his first sack of the game, racing across the line of scrimmage. Kull’s additional yardage after the reception was stopped by Moss’ flag pull.

On third down, under immense pressure by Parsons, Haughey threw a bomb to Kull, who was able to bring it down for another Progressive Cabinetry touchdown.

The extra point throw by Jaret Rojas to Sato gave their team a lead with the score of 33-19.

Coming back on offense with plenty of time for Moss to take his team down the field twice for the win, Gulfview tried to move the football down the field. Three snaps of the football put Progressive back on offense after three incomplete passes.

In an act of sportsmanship, Progressive Cabinetry chose not to snap the ball with the 14-point victory.

ANNA MARIA – The Florida rains could not stop the action on the indoor soccer pitch. Last week brought an end to the youth indoor season with two action-packed games.

After 40 minutes of play, Moss Builders took the championship medals in a close match-up against Ugly Grouper in the Intermediate League made up of the community’s youngest players.

G&G Yardscaping ran away with the win against an enthusiastic Ugly Grouper squad, giving it the championship honors for the Advanced League.

To start the first game the referee determined possession with a friendly battle of rock, paper, scissors, with Ugly Grouper winning the offensive position.

The game featured an excellent passing game by Moss Builders’ Dylan Sato and his teammates.

Mason Moss was awarded with the first scoring statistic in the game on a free kick, after an initial tap of the ball by Sato. Moss’ free kick went untouched past the Ugly Grouper defenders at the goal.

Ahead by a goal, Jackson Titen found the net for the first time in the game after four minutes of play, giving his team a two-point lead.

Less than a minute later, Sato scored his own goal, taking the score to 3-0, with plenty of time left in the league’s final game of the season.

In an effort to stop the scoring, the Ugly Grouper defense started to clump together near the net, eventually gaining possession of the soccer ball.

Hunter Titen made a nice defensive block of an Ugly Grouper strike. Jack Zaccagnino took a shot on goal that went just wide, right of the post.

Miles Moss, younger brother of Mason, showed tenacity at the wall to take back the soccer ball for Moss Builders. Meanwhile Mason Moss, essentially serving as the goalie protecting his net without the use of his hands, made huge stops preventing a score by Ugly Grouper.

J. Titen put the soccer ball through the legs of the last defender for the fourth goal for Moss Builders.

Ugly Grouper got on the scoreboard after 12 minutes of action with a spirit-sparking goal by Jackson Rosas. Rosas got the audience and his team excited with a second goal less than a minute later, tightening the score to 4-2.

Rosas played alongside Joseph Rosas during the season along with Brady Thompson, bringing the Ugly Grouper team to the big game.

With fearless play, Ugly Grouper’s Jasmine Sparks lit up the court with her defensive battles against the boys of Moss Builders.

Scoring the last goal for his team, Jesse Zaccagnino took a beastly shot that flew by Mason Moss.

After several three-line violation calls for both teams, the first half of the game ended with the score 4-3.

Both teams struggled to make anything happen on the indoor court. Moss Builders’ offense looked flat until the 31st minute of the game with a beautiful shot by Brandon Sato that went just right of the post.

Jesse Zaccagnino took the soccer ball down the floor, making a textbook cross-court pass to Sparks, who was just slightly out of position in front of the Moss Builders’ net.

Another three-line violation gave Mason Moss his second free kick scoring opportunity. In a repeat move, Dylan Sato tapped the yellow ball, giving Moss the freedom to take the scoring kick right into the Ugly Grouper net.

With the score 5-3, J. Titen got his hat trick with less than three minutes left on the clock, once again giving Moss Builders a three-point lead.

The Ugly Grouper team never called it quits, playing hard until the final buzzer. In the final seconds of the game, Jesse Zaccagnino’s shot was stopped by Mason Moss, ending the game with the score of 6-3.

In the second championship game of the night for the Advanced League, G&G Yardscaping handily earned the win against AMI Locals. The Locals squad put up a good fight and made their opponent work for the W.

Late team add-on Elek Brisson protected his team’s net for the majority of the game, forcing the G&G team to make excellent shots.

AMI Local’s Mary Harrison played tough defense, using her speed and toughness on the pitch to force the G&G offense to pass the soccer ball around the court.

G&G Yardscaping’s Cale Rudacille made great passes at midcourt to give his team scoring position on the AMI Local’s side of the line.

Rudacille’s teammate, Kate Stembridge, was a force to be reckoned with in front of the goal on defense. G&G’s squad with Payton and Ava Harlan and Hudson Green fought hard in the final game, just as they did throughout season.

Throughout the game, G&G’s Ryan Joseph played an unselfish game, despite his immense experience and soccer talent. Time and time again Joseph maneuvered his way down the court looking for Connor Samblis to take the shot.

With the exception of one, Samblis’ strikes sailed the ball missing the net.

Joseph scored the first of his four goals in the game after more than 17 minutes of action, giving his team a 1-0 lead. His second score came with just 30 seconds left on the scoreboard clock to end the half.

Leading by two points, G&G worked soundly on offense with a great pass by Rudacille to Samblis. The shot went to the side of the net for no score.

Samblis found his groove for his solo score in the 27th minute of the championship game, taking the score to 3-0.

One minute later, Brisson scored his team’s only goal, giving his team hope with only a two-point deficit. Throughout the season, Evan Talucci worked hard on the pitch along with AMI Locals teammates Dalton Fox, Jack and Jay Harrison, and standout visitor Carsyn Deligans.

AMI Locals’ Savana Coba took her shot that went just right of the post 28 minutes into the game and followed up with a heads up defensive stop a minute later.

In the last seven minutes of the game, G&G Yardscaping went on a scoring spree starting with a goal by Samblis. Rudacille ripped the ball for a shot attempt that was just right of the goal.

Joseph hit his team’s fifth and sixth goals in less than 30 seconds, leading G&G Yardscaping to the championship win with the score 6-1 to end the youth indoor play for the season.

Hayward Cup champions crowned

Hayward Cup champions crowned

The spring 2019 adult co-ed soccer season came to a close last Thursday night June 27 with three spectator-pleasing games. With the inevitable back-to-back games leading to the battle for the Hayward Cup, all four teams in the semifinals had to give it their all hoping to have enough left to win the final game of the season.

In the first game of the night, first seed Team Gulfview Windows and Doors met up against Jiffy Lube, the fourth seed coming into the playoffs. The play in regulation time ended with the score at 6-6, taking the game to a shootout.

With Sean Flynn in the goal for Team Jiffy Lube, Gulfview’s Keith Mahoney made the first shot. Omar Polar followed with a goal of his own against Jordan DeMers for Gulfview.

Team Captain Ryan Moss’s shot went wide of the post giving Jiffy Jube a chance to make the go-ahead shot. Ricky Anderson’s laser focus strike hit the net.

Aaron Parkin made Flynn go the wrong way, making easy work of his shot, tying the goal count. Looking for the go-ahead point, Jiffy Lube’s Emily Argeros missed her shot opening the door for Jose Urbiola Bolanos of Gulfview.

Bolanos’ shot sailed into the goal after hitting the hands of keeper Flynn. Jiffy Lube’s captain Danny Anderson drilled his shot into the post missing the shot.

A late addition to the Gulfview team, PJ Smargisso sealed the deal for his team with a successful strike, putting the team into the first championship slot.

Although with less scoring, the second semifinal game also finished in a shootout with the score after 50 minutes of play 1-1. Fifth seed Team Flynn Law, playing without Sean Flynn, started on defense with Mark Rudacille at the net attempting to stop the shot of Team Beach House Real Estate’s team captain Kris Yavalar. Yavalar started the final shots off with a goal.

Flynn Law’s Tyler Robinson took his position to make his strike against Cliff Powell. Robinson’s shot soared away from the goal.

David Greene, for Beach House, and Flynn Law’s Lexi Sato both made their shots. Ryley Moore missed the next shot for Team Beach House, and Flynn Law’s captain, Kevin Roman, made his tying goal.

Nick Bouchard had perfect placement with his shot and Olaf Krause’s shot went off of Powell’s hand right into the net.

With even goals, Beach House Real Estate’s Adam Bujarski put in the winning shot, despite Rudacille’s goal attempt, moving his team to the final match-up for the league title.

The game for the cup started with 23 minutes on the scoreboard and Beach House Real Estate with the first touch of the soccer ball. Six minutes into the game, Parkin found Moss down the field providing the opportunity for a cross to Ashley Friszman, who scored the first goal of the game.

After a misstep on the field leading to a penalty kick, Yavalar took and made the shot, tying the soccer game.

Moss made a beautiful shot with eight minutes left in the first half that went right into the arms of goalie Powell. Moore hit his shot for Beach House starting the back and forth scoring battle.

Gulfview Windows and Doors’ Mahoney tied the game with a free kick with less than one minute on the scoreboard.

The scoring of the second half of the game started with Beach House’s Bouchard with a little more than 16 minutes on the clock. Parkin’s tying shot, making the score 3-3, brought excitement to the crowd that was looking for another shootout finish.

Gulfview prevented that outcome with a strong run by Parkin to move the soccer ball to the Beach House end of the field, giving Mahoney another scoring opportunity.

Mahoney’s goal was soon followed by teammate Parkin’s score, giving their team a two-goal lead.

A strong defense kept Beach House from taking a shot, earning Gulfview Windows and Doors the ultimate league prize, the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup, giving Moss his first championship in several years.

Little cleats, lots of fun

The chill in the air last Tuesday night was paired with the sounds of youth soccer at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Several weeks into the fall soccer season, little kids as young as three years old up to 13 years old have been hitting the pitch Tuesday and Wednesday nights for futbal action.

The smallest little cleats learn the essentials with the help of volunteer coaches like Meghan Horner who take time out of their busy weekly schedule to spend an hour with the Island area boys and girls.

Wearing cleats, the little ballers in their long socks hold their shin guards as they excitedly kick the soccer ball down and around the field with Coach Horner and her assistants. During the 60 minute clinic, sponsored by The Freckled Fin, the kids work on shooting drills with the pop-up goals and passing “drills”.

Playing a fun game, Coach Horner helped the players learn how to dribble the soccer ball by keeping it close to them. In the exercise, if the ball hit the coach, the kids chose an animal that the coach pretends to be as the reward.

Cats, elephants, lizards and more delight the clinic goers as they learn the game of soccer while having fun in the sun.
