Solid Rock Construction on top

ANNA MARIA – The adult co-ed soccer league at The Center of Anna Maria Island started last Thursday night’s play with the two undefeated teams going head-to-head. Teams Pool America and Solid Rock Construction played 40 minutes of regular time with only one squad on top.

Starting the game off with a strong 2-0 lead at halftime, the Solid Rock team managed to hold off their strong opponent, letting them score twice.

Team captain Dean Hinterstoisser and Sam Parker shot the goals for Pool America, with assists by Parker’s husband, Eduardo Schlueter, and Octavious Cole. Cole, known for his flag football talents, joins the Island soccer family on the pitch this season.

Solid Rock’s win came off the boots of Julio Cantu, Leo Gonzalez, Raul Loera, Erica Nielsen and team captain Keith Mahoney. Loera and Mahoney are credited with a total of three assists in the team’s victory.

Currently ranked seventh, team Bubble Binz received a notch in the win column thanks to a forfeit by the Sato Real Estate team.

Winning by two goals in the second game played, Moss Builders defeated team AMI Dolphin Tours. Alex Villanueva scored the solo goal for the AMI Dolphin Tours team.

Also finding his footing on the soccer field as a transition from flag football, Karri Stephens is credited with a goal in the Moss Builders’ win. Teammates Stephen Adair and Greg Moss scored the remaining two points.

The Ross Built Custom Home team beat Gulf Drive Café 2-1. James Noblett and Jake Moss each got a strike past the Gulf Drive goalie.

Finishing the night in a tie, Hampton Painting and Language Services Associates each scored five points, earning each team a point in the standings.

Alex Quintero had the only hat trick of the week, while teammate Juan Rodriguez scored two goals for the Language Services squad.

Leading the scoring for Hampton Paintings was Ethan Hampton. Team captain Danny Hampton, Moises Martinez and Austin Nutting each put up a single point to end another night of soccer on the Island.

Moss Builders shut out Island Vacation Properties

This summer’s indoor soccer action at The Center includes two skill levels and age group divisions: Intermediate (five- to nine-year-old) and Advanced (10- to 14-year-old).

In the first game of the third week of play, the intermediate teams of Moss Builders and Island Vacation Properties faced each other in 40 minutes of rapid-fire action.

Dylan Sato started the play for Moss Builders. Immediately, Maddie Kimmons showed what a defensive powerhouse she is for Island Vacation Properties.

Sato brother Brandon made a nice reaching attempt to stop the soccer ball, but just could not quite get to it.

Six minutes into the game, Moss Builder’s Jackson Titen made a nice shot attempt. Teammate Mason Moss hit a rocket shot that was stopped by Kimmons, playing by the net.

Sato made a shot attempt that went just right of the post seven minutes later.

Island Vacation Properties made a great run down the field before being stopped by Moss.

With three minutes left on the scoreboard, Moss made another shot attempt, finding Kimmons away from the goal.

Despite what looked to be domination on the field by Moss Builders, the first half of play ended with the score 0-0.

Island Vacation Properties started the second half play. Camden Rudacille made a nice pass down the line. Kimmons was caught off guard allowing the first Moss Builders’ goal.

Implementing the three-line rule, teammates are required to touch a long pass before it crosses the third critical line down the court.

After a near own-goal by Moss Builders, Brandon Sato shot the Moss team’s second goal of the game. Moss followed two minutes later with another ball in the net, pushing the score to 3-0.

The Moss Builders team put its fourth goal on the board less than three minutes later.

Miles Moss worked with his team on the court allowing big brother Mason a clear shot over everyone’s heads for the team’s fifth goal.

Mason Moss hit another perfect shot for the final point of the match with a little more than four minutes left in the game, to end with the score 6-0.

The much-anticipated championship co-ed soccer game for the adults was finally played as the adult flag football season kicked off Thursday night at The Center of Anna Maria Island. After the final whistle of the first football game of the season blew, the gridiron turned into a pitch for the seven-on-seven soccer action.

Josh Sato brought his team out onto the field ready to defend their title. Kris Yavalar’s team went into the game ready to play hard, looking for the second title for Yavalar.

Sato Real Estate took the first shot, which went just left of the post. Zackary Lieb, for Team Lancaster Design, came back from the holidays ready to play, making strikes early in the game.

Goalkeeper Scott Bear prevented the goals finishing the game with 11 saves.

In the early defensive battle, Lancaster Design’s Cemal Duzgan’s first shot of the night was blocked by Sato. Yavalar’s follow-up shot went wide left of the post.

After eight minutes of play, Sato Real Estate’s Eric Pullen attempted to score with a header that went just over the crossbar.

Pullen’s tough offensive play gave him another scoring opportunity a minute later. His shot found the net, giving Sato Real Estate the first of five goals in the night.

Near midfield, Sato Real Estate’s Matthew Staggs made a quick strike that gave the ball to Francisco Oliviera. Trey Horne made the save for Team Lancaster Design.

Lancaster Design’s Nick Bouchard scored his team’s first goal after shot attempts from both teams. The goal that resulted from a great pass by Lieb to Sumiko Chipman, who made the assist, tied the game that would finally bring the season to an end.

The start of the second half of play brought about a shooting match. Lieb scored his second point of the night, kicking the ball between the two Sato Real Estate defenders Alta Bujarski and Nate Welch.

Welch once again tied up the matchup with a missile strike four minutes into the half. Sato Real Estate went ahead soon after, taking the score to 3-2.

Getting his second goal of the night, Welch put two points between Sato Real Estate and Lancaster Design.

Ryan Hogan answered back with less than seven minutes on the clock for Lancaster Design.

Oliviera put the final Sato Real Estate goal on the scoreboard for his team after 42 minutes of play.

Lancaster Design fought hard for the last four minutes of the game hoping to score two quick ones but to no avail. The Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup was to be for only one team: Sato Real Estate.

Wash Family Construction dominated Slim’s Place in the 11- to 13-year-old semi-final match-up, only to struggle against the first place Bins Be Clean team in the final game of the night.

Starting the game off with 12 minutes on the scoreboard, Evan Talucci played solid in the net, protecting his end of the field as the goalkeeper for Bins Be Clean.

Talucci’s teammate Jackson Mattick took the first shot after two minutes of play. Mattick’s shot hit the bottom of the crossbar only to hit straight down to the ground in front of the goal line.

With a second chance, Mattick hit his next shot, putting Bins Be Clean ahead 1-0.

Cash Carter kicked the soccer ball for a strong defensive clearing the full length of the field for Bins Be Clean.

Five minutes into the game, JM Feeney hustled to the sideline to keep the ball in bounds, giving his team, Wash Family Construction, a corner kick. Bins Be Clean made a nice defensive stop keeping Wash Family from scoring.

Minutes later a shot by Jeremiah Sculco was stopped by Talucci. The corner kick found the ball at the feet of Angelina Albrecht, who attempted her first shot of the game.

Just out of the reach of goalie Victor Albrecht, Jackson Pakbaz hit the net with four minutes left in the half, giving Bins Be Clean a two-point lead.

Bins Be Clean’s Sam Leister held strong defensively against Wash Family Construction’s Riley Lawson, preventing a shot before halftime.

Into the second half of the 11-to 13-year old championship game, Carter took a shot for Bins Be Clean, while teammate Nicholas Yatros played tough defense against Wash Family Construction’s veteran player Aiden Templeton.

Kirin Malisoff and Kylie Barkley played strong defense for Bins Be Clean, helping their team to another victory.

Yatros stopped Templeton’s fast break, forcing him to pass the ball. V. Albrecht followed with a great defensive play of his own with a remarkable save on a Bins Be Clean shot.

Scoring the third goal for Bins Be Clean, Yatros put himself in the perfect scoring position with only a couple of minutes left on the game clock.

Despite a strong effort by Wash Family Construction, the team just could not get the soccer ball between the posts, resulting in the big win for Bins Be Clean.

The night also spotlighted 10 players who caught the attention of the coaches this season. In the instructional six-to 7-year-old league, Nixon Conner and Maggie Sue Niedzwick were named the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player, respectively.

Both teams clinched a spot in the championship match on Wed., Nov. 14. Neither will know who their opponents will be until the semifinal play is completed at the 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. games that same night.

Planet Stone went head-to-head against Ugly Grouper last Tuesday night to start the evening’s action.

Ugly Grouper’s Cale Rudacille scored the only goal of the first game of the night for the eight- to 10-year-old youth soccer league in their victory against number one ranked Planet Stone.

Planet Stone stayed on the field for the week’s second game against Progressive Cabinetry. Despite having just played the previous game, the Planet Stone team still showed fire in its boots, taking the win with a goal at the 23rd minutes of the play by Ava Harlan. Just 36 seconds later the top team put the ball in the net for the second and final goal of the game.

In the older age group, Bins Be Clean finished the season with a loss and a tie, but its strong season play kept the team at the top of the rankings. Wash Family Construction, which finished second in the regular season, completed its night with a victory over Bins Be Clean.

The men and women who make up the co-ed adult soccer league finished their fourth game of the season last Thursday night, leading them into the second half of the regular season.

The three weeks of play prior saw tough competition and close scores among the teams. Week four was four blowout games, with players missing and mismatches.

Sato Real Estate showed its dominance on the pitch against Jiffy Lube with a 7-2 win, putting it neck and neck with Eason Builders.

Eason Builders, in the last game of the night, handed Ross Built Construction its fourth loss of the season finishing six goals ahead. Ross Built goes into the fifth game versus Lancaster Design looking for its first win.

Lancaster Design, a team once on top with Sato Real Estate, fell to third place with a loss against AMI Locals with the score 3-8.

The 8 p.m. game had Moss Builders facing Slim’s Place. At the end of 46 minutes of play, Moss Builders gained its second win of the season. Like Ross Built Construction, Slim’s Place looks forward to its first W next week.

Champions Sato Real Estate starts season strong

After two weeks of play in the fall adult co-ed soccer season, Team Sato Real Estate remains on the top of the leaderboard, despite the challenges of a new squad. Lead by team captain Josh Sato, the current Hayward Cup champions easily defeated Ross Built Construction Thursday night.

Ross Built Construction, without its leader Greg Ross, struggled to take shots and stop offensive powerhouse of the Sato team.

Sato Real Estate’s roster proved to be too much for the Ross Built defense, with Eric Pullen, Mark Rudacille, Francisco Oliviera and Sato all scoring for the team in purple, along with assists by Andrew Schmidt and Matthew Staggs.

Pullen started the offensive challenge with a pass to Oliviera. Oliviera’s shot was stopped by Ross Built Construction goalkeeper Robb Marshall, who returned to the team after a couple of seasons out of the league.

Less than a minute later, Schmidt got his first assist to Sato, who scored in the first minute of the game. Pullen struck with a beautiful arching shot just over the head of Marshall for the Sato Real Estate second goal taking the score to 2-0.

Four minutes into the game, Ross Built’s lone female player, who predominately plays defense, found a scoring opportunity to put her team’s first point on the scoreboard.

Defender Alta Bujarski showed her skills against Schmidt. Schmidt pulled away from Bujarski finding Pullen in striking position to score his second goal for Sato Real Estate, once again giving the team a two-point lead.

Ross Built Construction worked well on the Sato Real Estate side of the field but could not get the ball in the net. Ten minutes into play, Max Gazzo took the corner kick getting the ball to Vince Circharo, whose strong leg sailed the ball over the crossbar.

The Ross Built defense and Marshall’s goalie skills shut down the Sato Real Estate offense for a solid 10 minutes. In that time, Gazzo made a nice slide to the soccer ball to keep it in bounds, getting it to Chris Circharo for the second Ross Built Construction goal, narrowing the gap with the score 3-2.

To end the first half of the game, Team Sato scored its fourth goal of the game with a shot by Oliviera.

Coming onto the field with a two-point deficit, Ross Built Construction tried to build the momentum to keep up with its opponent. Gazzo’s pass to Felipe alone in front of the goal outside of the box just missed the net.

Marshall proved to be a force to be reckoned with a shot by Mark Rudacille that ricocheted off of the goalie’s hands, giving Sato Real Estate a corner shot. The corner taken by Sato put the soccer ball to Pullen’s feet in a swarm of defenders.

Working the ball out of traffic, Sato was finally able to take a shot that hit hard into the side of the net.

At minute 30, a rocket shot by Pullen bounced off the hands of Marshall and into the goal at the right post.

With the biggest lead of the game and the score 5-2, Sato Real Estate found itself on the defense for the better portion of six minutes, with only a few shot attempts.

After keeping the ball from going out of bounds, V. Circharo nailed a beautiful shot attempt that curved just short of the goal.

On a penalty on Sato that put C. Circharo flying in the air, V. Circharo took the free kick. Leaning back on the kick, V. Circharo’s goal attempt landed in the nearby tennis courts.

Rudacille finally found his footing and scored his first goal of the game after several attempts. Seconds later he scored his second point with a shot that went above Marshall’s head, increasing the Sato Real Estate lead to 7-2.

Once again running across the field at full speed, V. Circharo sent a missile right to the hands of Marshall. The shot was too hard for Marshall to handle, sending the soccer ball into the net for the third and final Ross Built goal, and the final goal of the game.

The last three games of the night were close battles once again showing the parity in the league.

After 90 minutes of play, Ryan Moss’ Moss Builders tied Jiffy Lube, captained by Danny Anderson, with six goals each. Going into week three, Moss Builders finds itself in a three-way tie for fifth place with Slim’s Place and AMI Locals.

Lancaster Design walked away with a two-point victory in game three of the night against Slim’s Place. Its win currently puts Team Lancaster Design tied with Sato Real Estate in the first place position.

The third game with AMI Locals against Eason Builders Group was a close game during both halves of play. The come from behind victory by Eason Builders put it in fourth place in the league with a 1-1 record.

With four teams that have yet to capture a victory, Ross Built Construction starts this season much like the last at the bottom of the rankings with five more regular season games to play.

The sponsorships by local businesses supporting the sports programs at The Center is an essential component of community unity and the growth and development of the Island area youth.

To take it to the next level, over the many years, companies like Ross Built Construction, Mike Norman Realty, Wash Family Construction, just to name a few, have not only provided financial support through sponsorships, but the owners and operators have taken time out of their busy schedules to personally help mold the players through volunteer coaching.

This tradition of selfless sacrifice continues with the next generation of parent coaches and sponsors such as Sean Flynn with Legler Flynn, the Anderson brothers Danny and Ricky with Jiffy Lube, and Moss Builders’ Ryan and Emily Moss.

From the football field to the Island pitch and even in the indoor soccer arena, Moss Builders consistently gives back to the Island community, both young and old. This summer’s indoor soccer season is no exception.

For the seven weeks of July and August, the Mosses are on the hardcourt at The Center with as many as 17 little individual indoor soccer players teaching them the basics of the fast-paced game during the Moss Builders’ clinic for 3-to 8-year-old players.

Stepping up to help, Chad Uhlinger, head referee for the adult co-ed soccer league and soccer coach at Braden River Middle School, is contributing some of his time off along with Casey Rygiel to help with the community’s future.

With the bouncier and faster balls, different game rules and half walls to strategically use during a game, the patience and guidance of the volunteer coaches are important to keep the clinic and scrimmage games fun.

Volunteer coaches are the lifeblood of the youth sports program at The Center, and the business sponsors are what help make it possible for all kids to play sports on the Island.

The spirit of the World Cup on the Island

On the heels of the excitement of World Cup action, the Island soccer community came together Thursday night to start another season. Representing the countries that made their way to the semi-final round of the sport’s big show, more than 50 adults took to the pitch for a summer season of fun on the field.

Seven teams make up the league for the last-minute added soccer season, as summer adult flag football did not come to fruition for the first time in the league’s history. This shift in interest came at the perfect time, allowing Team Brazil, sponsored by Moss Builders, and Team Croatia, sponsored by Progressive Cabinetry, to set the tone for the night in the first game of the season.

With the co-ed rule of one female player on the field lifted, Erin Felipe represented for the limited girl power this season. Felipe plays on Team Croatia with Damir Glavan, who proudly represents his home country that made it to the finals of the World Cup.

Utilizing other portions of the field at The Center, the slightly wider but shorter field allowed more open play with five and a goalie for each team manning the field.

Progressive Cabinetry’s Ryan Hogan hit the first of his three goals early in the game with the assist by Hakan Toka. Third round pick Toka proved to be a player to watch with his performance week one.

In the fourth minute of play, last season’s sleeper Chris Scott showed why he has to be picked in the first round in the last two drafts with a solid shot after making the moves against Croatia team captain Kris Yavalar.

Aaron Parkin returned to Island soccer this season with a goal of his own less than three minutes later to put Moss Builders up by a goal in what looked to be a close game.

Hogan struck back quick to tie the game against goalkeeper Olaf Krause. Krause guarded the house until the 12th minute of play. Team captain Ryan Moss put on the goalie jersey just in time to stop a ground shot by Glavan.

Moss could not stop the Yavalar-Hogan combination moves, as Hogan solidly placed the ball in the net for a hat trick giving Progressive Cabinetry’s Team Croatia the lead once again.

As the scoreboard showed the score at 3-2, Moss made a beautiful throw to Parkin, taking advantage of the shorter field. Parkin found Ed Moss in perfect position near the Croatia goal. E. Moss’ shot went wide right.

The scoreboard clock showed a little more than two minutes left in the first half of the game when Brazil’s Scott took a shot that was finished by Raymond Gardner, tying the game at 3-3.

Toka scored his second goal of the game to put Progressive Cabinetry up again to finish the first half of play.

Less than two minutes into the next half, Parkin and Scott made easy work of the field taking the score to 4-4.

Nearing the 30th minute of play, E. Moss scored his last goal before his 60th birthday on a play made possible by the long pass of now-goalkeeper Gardner, giving Moss Builders’ Team Brazil the lead.

Yuri Pereira and Krause score goals of their own, putting the Moss team up by three goals.

In the 40th minute of the game, R. Moss found himself in the goal in a one-on-one situation against Toka. Toka’s strike could not be defended, giving Team Croatia a glimmer of hope with plenty of time on the game clock.

Toka narrowed the gap to a one-point lead with another on-target shot before Parkin and Gardner tag teamed goalie Will Case, putting the shot through his legs.

Unselfish play by Parkin gave the soccer ball to Pereira who found Scott open for yet another point on the board.

As the clock ticked down, with four seconds left in regulation play, Scott sealed the deal with a goal ending the game with the score 7-10 and giving Moss Builders’ Team Brazil the first win of the summer season.
