ANNA MARIA – On May 14, the Manatee Hundred Club named Manatee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Sergeant Brett Getman as the 2026 Manatee County Officer of the Year. During the club’s annual banquet, law enforcement officers from nine agencies that serve Manatee County were recognized for their service and dedication to the community.

Getman was honored for his lifesaving efforts in the dangerous waters at Bean Point in Anna Maria.

An announcement posted at the MCSO Facebook page said, “Sgt. Getman, the supervisor of MCSO’s Anna Maria Unit, was selected for his heroic actions to risk his own safety and swim into the Gulf in an area with a strong current in an effort to rescue two individuals in distress. We are incredibly proud of Sgt. Getman for his heroic actions, and thankful for the Manatee Hundred Club’s recognition and support of local law enforcement throughout the year.”

When later speaking to The Sun, Getman said, “I am deeply honored to receive the Officer of the Year award, and I want to sincerely thank the Manatee Hundred Club for this recognition and for their continued support of law enforcement officers throughout Manatee County. Their dedication to supporting those who serve our community does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.

“I also want to express my gratitude to Sheriff Rick Wells and the men and women at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office for the nomination. It is an honor to serve alongside such dedicated professionals and I am thankful for the opportunities I have received over the years.

“Most importantly, I want to thank my wife for her unwavering love and support. I am truly grateful for this honor and proud to serve this community,” Getman said.
