Team Adrian Griffin Interiors shuts out opponent

ANNA MARIA – Under a clear winter sky last Tuesday night, families and friends cheered on the 8- to 10-year-old flag football players at The Center who took the field for the first night of competitive play. After the season kickoff jamboree night, the flag football play was interrupted by a winter storm, delaying week one play.

Last week, the elementary school-age youth took to Field 1 at the community center while the 4- to 5-year-old players learned the game on the small field. Running the field before sundown, team AMI Coconuts and the Slim’s Place squad warmed up with volunteer coaches Bobby McGraw and Sammy Romero and ran plays.

The older kids took their first snaps of the season in games leading to the playoffs starting in March. Solid Rock Construction and The Fish Guy Aquarium Services teams faced each other to start the season, with Solid Rock taking home the first win, 24-7.

Elijah Roadman, the Solid Rock quarterback, threw four touchdown passes for the victory. Ruby Kesten and Samuel Raulerson each made two scoring catches for their team. On the other side of the football, Kesten caught the pass of The Fish Guy’s QB for an interception.

Everett Hood passed for a touchdown to receiver Bruno Peerani, giving The Fish Guy team six points. Adding to the team’s score, Graeme Bekkerus caught the only point after conversion pass in the game for either team.

Despite the deficit on the scoreboard, The Fish Guy Aquarium Services team fought hard on the field for two halves of play.

The Moss Builders team could not find the end zone in their matchup against Adrian Griffin Interiors, who won their on-field battle 18-0. In the three-score game, Grayson Hinckle threw a scoring pass to Jackson Kesten. Kesten added six more points to the score with a rushing TD.

Teammate Asher Patel used his speed to run the football into the end zone while playing on offense. Defensively Patel dominated with four flag pulls and an interception, helping to secure the team’s first win of the season.

Moss Builders’ Owen Mahoney was his team’s standout defensively with nine big stops. Parker Svoboda showed he has reliable hands with three catches and an interception. Juliette Sato and Louis Bacon had defensive stops, exemplifying the efforts of the Moss team despite the loss.

Team Diamond Turf had the bye week to start the winter youth flag football season for the division.

Teens back on the gridiron

ANNA MARIA – The winter break is over, school is back in session, and the youth flag football season started last Monday night on the Island.

Winter flag football action ensued on The Center gridiron with the tweens and teens. The younger players played their first games with preseason fun and action jamboree-style.

The eight 11- to 14-year-old league teams played their first games of the season. Poppos Taqueria, Jiffy Lube, Sato Real Estate and Solid Rock Air Conditioning took home the first wins of the season for the age group.

The teens, rostering a full league with six teams, played three games last week to start the season. Cortez Florida Vacation and Moss Builders handily defeated their opponents, Solid Rock Air Conditioning and Reel Coastal Properties, respectively.

In the second 14- to 17-year-old league match-up, Solid Rock Electrical faced team HSH Design. Both teams struggled to find the end zone on offense during two halves of play, but defenses for each squad had their shining moments in the 7-6 nailbiter.

The one-point conversion by Henry Dugan after his touchdown catch from quarterback Victor Albrecht made the ultimate difference in the game for team Solid Rock Electrical.

On defense, Solid Rock’s Dugan had three sacks on the HSH Design QB and three flag pulls to his credit. Albrecht added an interception to his season statistics, while teammates Kegan McGlade and Kaleb Romagnino had a total of three defensive stops.

Making his mark on the field for HSH Design was Jack Mattick on defense. In addition to two flag pulls, Mattick picked off the pass of the Solid Rock quarterback. His interception resulted in the six points his team put on the scoreboard.

Playing hard to keep HSH in the game on offense, Chase Castagna had three catches. Teammate Jaxon Kagin caught a pass to gain critical yardage.

Additional defensive pressure by Sterling Holiday and Kyle Castagna with big flag pulls helped keep their team in the game. C. Castagna only enhanced his game stats with two defensive stops of his own.

Despite the continued efforts of both teams, at the final second of the game, the missed point after the HSH Design TD gave Solid Rock Electrical their first win of 2025.

Floridian Mortgage holds on for championship

Floridian Mortgage holds on for championship

ANNA MARIA –The Center closed out the adult summer season last Thursday night with three games played, and Floridian Mortgage come out on top after a hard-fought 29-27 game against team Fishing with Salty for the championship title.

After beating Salty Printing in the semifinal round of play, top seed Floridian Mortgage faced the Fishing with Salty team, which defeated Moss Builders in their playoff game 52-33. It was anyone’s game up to the final seconds, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm on the field.

Floridian Mortgage started the game on offense and quickly made a statement with a bomb by Chase Richardson to Tim Holly for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Right out of the chute, Richardson’s team was up 7-0 after Cory Banks scored the point after the score.

Fishing with Salty’s attempts to put points on the scoreboard were cut short after Dina DeJesus started her team on the right foot with a completed pass. Holly’s interception on the next play stopped the drive.

Richardson could not capitalize on the turnover, throwing bad passes and leading to a three-and-out series.

Taking over on downs, Fishing with Salty was ready as the team steadily marched down the field with short passes. Dylan Doyle, on second down, took the football into the pass-only zone in Floridian Mortgage territory.

Scoring its first touchdown, Jonathan Soultatos squeezed through defenders to score for team Fishing, taking the score to 7-6. Doyle scored the extra point.

With the score tied, Richardson’s first target was Holly for a long run after the reception. Rex Kesten caught the football near the endzone after an injury timeout due to a DeJesus injury.

Tracking the front of the endzone, Tyler Brewer caught the ball for Floridian’s second TD of the game, with the finishing touch by Banks.

Leading once again, Floridian Mortgage played strong defense at their own endzone with their opponent in scoring position. Making the stop, Richardson returned to the field with his team, continuing to struggle.

Richardson overthrew Holly but eventually found Kesten for 6 points. Holly added a point to the scoreboard with a catch in the endzone.

After moving the ball to near midfield, Brewer got the call walking just over the first down line with the football overhead. With the clock down to the final minute of the first half of the game, Richardson found Brewer as a second option receiver on second down with the clock running.

With the football sitting on the 7-yard line, Floridian’s hope of scoring before halftime was dashed with another incomplete throw.

On offense, Fishing with Salty was 14 points behind. Rushing Matt Briley, Holly sacked the quarterback in the endzone for a safety, giving team Floridian two points and possession of the ball.

First pass out, Richardson hit Holly, catching for a first down out-of-bounds with less than 10 seconds on the scoreboard clock. An impeding the rusher penalty for Floridian Mortgage and interception in the endzone by Briley ended the first half of play.

Fishing with Salty had the football to start the half with a short yardage play. The second snap resulted in a bomb to Doyle for 6 points. Soultatos scored the extra point, making it a 9-point ball game.

Three incomplete Richardson throws later, Fishing with Salty was back on offense with catches by Octavious Cole. A critical first down catch by Miguel Rodriguez kept the forward progress moving.

On second down, QB Briley kept the ball for long yardage after a quick pitch back from his teammate under center. With the football at the 7-yard line, Soultatos was alone in the right corner of the endzone for the TD.

After the point after conversion by the Fishing squad, Richardson mixed it up, running with the football after a quick pitch from Holly two plays in a row, resulting in a first down with less than 12 minutes left in the game.

Standing his ground and avoiding a penalty, Holly and Soultatos had a standoff at the line of scrimmage as Richardson searched for an open player down field. After two bad passes, Richardson’s throw on third down was not caught by the intended receiver thanks to tight defense by Fishing with Salty.

Fishing with Salty’s Cole caught a big pass on third down for a TD, advancing the score to 29-27. With a possible win in sight, Brewer’s reception in the endzone denied the additional point to team Fishing.

A mid-air collision took Brewer and Briley out of the rest of the game with critical seconds left to play. Despite all their efforts, Fishing with Salty could not make up the large scoring gap made by Floridian Mortgage early in the game.

The game was not pretty, but team Floridian Mortgage was named the league’s champion, winning over Fishing with Salty by two points.

Semifinals set for flag football

ANNA MARIA – After a two-week delay due to torrential downpours, the Island’s recreational adult co-ed flag football league playoffs started last Thursday with the eight teams vying for a spot in the semifinals.

In the closest game of the night, both teams came off the field drenched from the humid air with Floridian Mortgage clinching the first semifinal spot 32-24. Winning by eight points over Solid Rock Air Conditioning, the top-ranked team had to fight hard under the heat of the sun.

Quarterback Chase Richardson threw for five touchdowns to Tim Holly, Rex Kesten and Zach Wyrick. Tyler Brewer and Kesten each added a point to the scoreboard with catches from Richardson after the team’s TDs.

On defense, Derrick Carey had two interceptions off throws by Solid Rock Air Conditioning quarterback Dominick Otteni. The Solid Rock defense kept the pressure on with 20 team flag pulls.

The pressure on the Floridian QB forced three Richardson interceptions to help keep Solid Rock in the game for the two halves of play. Karri Stephens, Zaon Williams and Otteni each snagged a Richardson pass, giving their team the football.

Offensively, Otteni found his targets for four touchdowns to score 24 points. Williams caught for 18, while Stephens was the receiver for six.

The Solid Rock Air Conditioning team could not find the endzone for a point after conversion, reducing their score by four points and dampening momentum each time the team scored. With the loss, Floridian Mortgage plays Moss Builders at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Moss Builders secured its place in the next round of the playoffs with a win against Solid Rock Electrical 33-12. Brothers Moss faced each other in the QB position with Ryan Moss out-throwing Jonathan six touchdowns to two.

Each brother had two interceptions in the game. J. Moss’ interceptions came from the hands of his cousin, Greg Moss, playing for Moss Builders. Solid Rock Electrical’s Jesse Skipper and Zach Long made the takeaways from R. Moss.

A different family battle continued in the game with the faces of the Solid Rock group. James Roadman and Peggy Smith, in-laws, scored the touchdowns for Moss Builders, while Evelyn and Zach Long, also in-laws of Roadman and Smith, made plays happen for Solid Rock Electrical.

G. Moss and Shawn Balvin also scored for the Moss Builders team. Their counterparts, Brandon Rolland and Skipper each found the endzone with the football in hand to score for team Solid Rock Electrical.

Earning their spot in the semifinal round, Salty Printing found their groove, defeating team Slim’s Place 33-12. The Slim’s QB was held to two touchdown passes to Jaden Grant. Defensively, the team could not stop Salty with only three recorded flag pulls by Isaiah Lambert, Jana Whitehead and Rodriguez.

On the other side of the field, Charles “Tuna” McCracken threw for four touchdowns, finding lifelong friend Blake Balais for two. Raul Loera and Matt Manger were McCracken’s targets for the other TDs.

Finding his footing on the gridiron, Loera scored two of the three extra points, with Christian Hampton putting one point on the scoreboard.

The Salty defense was on fire with two sacks and three interceptions, including a pick-six by Balais in the win.

Salty Printing faces Fishing with Salty on Thursday, Sept. 12 in the second semifinal game. Fishing with Salty defeated Prosper Bradenton 35-18 to move them to the next round of play.

In a lopsided game, the Fishing team’s Miguel Rodriguez threw for three TDs. Dina DeJesus scored twelve points, with teammates Matthew Briley and Rodriguez catching the other two.

Rodriguez showed his versatility on the field with a touchdown reception from Jonathan Soultatos. He was also the only player of the night to put a rushing TD in the statistics.

Scoring for Prosper Bradenton, QB Ray Gardner hit Tony Giammari twice and found Connor Ludwig for six points in the team’s final loss of the season.

The championship game is scheduled to be played following the last semifinal game on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m. at The Center to close out the season.

Players persist on soggy field

ANNA MARIA – With indoor soccer cancelled for the kids last week, the gridiron was the only stage for local sports on Thursday night.

With the grass still damp from then-Tropical Storm Debby, six teams battled it out as the humidity and football matchups heated up the field. Team Prosper Bradenton forfeited their game against Fishing with Salty.

The Salty Printing squad won their fourth game of the season against Solid Rock Air Conditioning 27-25.

Christian Hampton was the main target of the Salty passers with five receptions, three for touchdowns. On defense, he finished the game with four flag pulls and an interception.

Also, with five catches for Salty Printing, Charles “Tuna” McCracken paired up with team captain Matt Manger to gain positive yardage. He threw for three TDs, while Manger had one scoring pass.

Salty’s Blake Balais was hit for a touchdown catch and four receptions, including an all-important one-point conversion. Hampton was the QB’s target for a successful two-point conversion.

The Salty point after plays made the difference between the win and a tie against Solid Rock Air Conditioning.

On the other side of the football, Balais had three stops and an interception. Teammates Cody Allen and Raul Loera made critical flag pulls, keeping the Solid Rock squad from advancing.

Loera’s extra point catch in week five and his continued defensive pressure exemplify his solid transition from a soccer threat to a soon-to-be flag football veteran.

Keeping the pressure on the Salty Printing passers, Travis Bates was credited with two sacks for Solid Rock. Veteran player Karri Stephens made five stops, while his teammates collectively had nine additional flag pulls.

Solid Rock’s defense kept them in the game with interceptions by Angelie Callazo and Zaon Williams. Callazo’s snagging of the Salty pass was taken to the end zone for six points.

Callazo and Williams each had one-point conversions for their team. Callazo’s came after a score by Stephens, and Williams found the endzone to complete the scoring series capped by Callazo’s touchdown.

Solid Rock’s touchdown passes came off the hands of Dominick Otteni and Williams.

After their loss in week five, Floridian Mortgage came back to dominate the second game of the night against Slim’s Place.

Quarterback Chase Richardson threw for five touchdowns. Tim Holly and Rex Kesten each had two TD catches, while teammate Zach Wyrick had one. Kesten and Wyrick added to their scoring stats with points after conversions.

Adding two points to the scoreboard with one-point conversions, Cory Banks and Jasmine Muldoon were Richardson’s intended receivers.

On defense, Holly sacked the Slim’s Place quarterback. Derrick Carey and Wyrick had an interception each.

With the 21-point mercy rule in place, the Floridian Mortgage defense was prohibited from rushing the Slim’s Place quarterback, Cruz Rodriguez, for most of the game.

Rodriguez threw one touchdown to Jaden Grant. Failing to convert after the TD, the final score was 34-6, with the Slim’s Place record going to 1-5-0.

Quarterback Charles “Tuna” McCracken solidly threw for six touchdowns and an extra point, finding Ramon Guerrero IV for 25 points.

Life-long friend Tyler Brewer scored a TD from a McCracken spiral. Brewer scored a one-point conversion for a total of six catches in the game. Defensively, he had a flag pull and a critical interception.

Solid Rock’s QB Dominick Otteni played a strong game on both sides of the football with four touchdown throws, seven flag pulls and an interception. Otteni’s hot target, Peggy Smith, scored two TDs with seven receptions.

Smith scored a PAT and contributed to the Solid Rock Construction defense with two stops.

James Roadman, Solid Rock team captain, and Rex Kesten scored seven and six points in the game, respectively. Roadman had five defensive stops and an extra point, with his positive and never-say-quit demeanor.

Richardson and Jackson Hayes threw for 30 points. Adding to his three TD passes, Richardson ran into the endzone.

Teammate Cody Allen caught two for TDs and an extra point. His flag pull was one of 14 huge defensive stops by Floridian Mortgage.

Tim Holly stopped offensive progress by snagging eight flags, sacking the Slim’s Place QB six times and making an interception. Jasmine Muldoon scored her six points and made two critical stops on defense.

Slim’s Place did not go down without a fight. QB Anthony Mannino passed for one touchdown to Alexander Cruz. One point was scored by Cruz Rodriguez with a catch from a play in the “pass-only zone.”

Rodriguez added to the game stats with an interception and three flag pulls.

Team Edible Cookie Dough Café took their sixth loss against Salty Printing in another high-scoring game to start off the night’s play.

Quarterback Matt Manger threw for seven TDs, aiming for his main target, Shawn Balvin. Balvin finished the game with four touchdown catches.

The duo also made plays on D with two interceptions by Balvin and one by Manger. Balvin added two flag pulls to his season numbers.

Zaon Williams was hit twice by Manger for 12 points. Throwing for six, Williams played QB, adding to the Salty Printing points. He rounded out his play with a one-point conversion and five flag pulls on defense.

Salty’s Olvin Izquierdo and Corey Jacques each scored a TD. Jacques made more big plays in the game with a successful PAT, five flag pulls and an interception.

Among the best veterans in the league, Dina DeJesus had a takeaway against the Edible Cookie Dough Café quarterback. On offense, DeJesus gave her team two points after a Salty touchdown.

Sharing the throwing duties, Steven Pavina and Alonzo Lemus found open receivers for Team Edible Cookie Dough Café, scoring 28 points against Salty Printing.

Pavina threw for three TD and caught for seven points, including a throw by Lemus. Lemus caught two of Pavina’s touchdown throws and scored a two-point conversion.

Undefeated Luxury Services wins

Undefeated Luxury Services wins

ANNA MARIA – In what was anticipated to be an action-packed championship flag football game last Thursday night, team Luxury Services and the Solid Rock Construction crew gave the spectators a game that did not disappoint.

After a season of lopsided scores, Luxury Services made it clear why they ended the regular season undefeated and on the top of the rankings. Putting up as many as 96 points in a game this season, the squad led by Chase Richardson continued to find his main target, Jonathan Soultatos, in the final game of the adult flag season.

The Richardson-Soultatos duo added 20 points on the scoreboard. Soultatos finished the season with 15 receptions in the championship game against the talented Solid Rock team.

Despite seven precise flag pulls by Charles “Tuna” McCracken, making amazing stops against Soultatos, Solid Rock Construction came up short of the 32-26 win.

Winning the game by just one touchdown, Richardson threw for five TDs including three to Soultatos, as well as singles to Tim Holly and Dustin Tomcho.

Tomcho made three big catches and possibly the game-winning interception on defense to help his team march to victory.

On the other side of the football, QB Dominick Otteni hit his marks with 11 solid catches by Corey Jacques and three by Tyler Brewer. Brewer added two points to the scoreboard with a focused catch in the endzone after a Solid Rock touchdown.

Solid Rock Construction’s Hannah McCracken played a hard final game and made four amazing flag pulls to stop the Luxury Services offense. The efforts of H. McCracken, older sister of Tuna, contributed to the fight that kept her team in it for two halves of play.

Defensively, Travis Bates put the heat on Richardson the entire game as the Solid Rock designated rusher. Putting the pressure on the Luxury QB kept the offensive players on their toes with Richardson’s quick-release passes.

Otteni added to his game stats with a catch thrown by McCracken and a flag pull. Solid Rock teammate Brian Leibfried made big contributions on the field throughout the season to help get the Solid Rock team to the big game.

A flag pull by Jasmine Muldoon added to the strong defensive effort by Luxury Services that earned the team the winter 2023 Center adult flag football championship title.

Youth gridiron action starts the new year at The Center

Youth gridiron action starts the new year at The Center

The ringing in of the new year brought in 2020 and a new season of youth flag football at The Center of Anna Maria Island.

In addition to the football clinics for the youngest ballers, the area boys and girls ranging in age between eight and 17 years old officially started another season on the gridiron last week.

Six games were played, with the winners feeling the wind under their wings with excitement and the teams that came up short learning valuable lessons with the sport. With many games left to play, some standouts became apparent.

In the eight-to 10-year old league, HSH’s Connor Samblis and Savanna Coba made huge plays for their team. Samblis with three recorded receptions, two receiving touchdowns and a pick-six to be included with his two passing touchdowns could be noted as the team MVP.

Coba had two receptions including one for a score in the game. Scoring for HSH included touchdowns by Charlie Neri and Lucas Signor.

Team Rays Ramblings worked hard on the field and held their heads up high despite the loss against HSH with two touchdown passes by Jack McCarthy. Reef Marin was credited with receiving touchdowns in the game, along with six catches by Joseph Bramurov.

In Moss Builders’ win against Beach Bums, Gavin Lyssy had two passing touchdowns and a scoring catch of his own. Ewen Cloutier caught the football for three touchdowns and Cyrus Ryan made a two-point conversion reception.

Despite the loss, Beach Bums’ Hayden Eurice had four catches including one putting six points on the scoreboard for his team.

The only 11-13 age group game last week was between Ugly Grouper and Solid Rock Construction. Coming out on top, Solid Rock’s Evan Talucci caught a touchdown pass to help his team with the win.

On the other side of the field, Frankie Coleman scored, while teammate Aiden Templeton had an interception and took it to the end zone for Ugly Grouper.

The Hashmark Sports defense took advantage of a rocky passing game by Ugly Grouper in the 11-14 flag league, with four interceptions for touchdowns. Shawn Balvin, for Hashmark Sports, had a receiving touchdown and a pick-six.

Teammate Nate Costello snagged the reception on defense for two scoring interceptions and an offensive touchdown reception as well. Alex McCauley grabbed the fourth interception taking it down the field for a score for his team. Chance Hayward scored 12 points for Hashmark in the 54-point win with Ian Godefry noted as the quarterback with three touchdown throws.

Defensively Ugly Grouper’s Jonah Durst and Ethan Brown both had interceptions. Kolby Petrin caught five passes with the remaining members of the roster each having at least one catch in the game.

In the final game of the night, MuniPlan took the win spreading the catches among the team from Tuna McCracken, Tyler Brewer and Fisher Dahlman. Brewer also had six catches in the game with one for a touchdown, along with four for Morgan Horesh including an extra point.

Teammate David Daigle was credited with two touchdown catches in the win against Killer Bait.

Killer Bait’s sole touchdown came from a Ben Barreda throw to Jackson Hayes. Hayes had five catches in the game, with four in the books for Silas Banyas.

ACE Hardware undefeated champions

ACE Hardware undefeated champions

In the teen 14- to 17-year old league, many of the boys who have played flag football on the Island since preschool return each season just to have fun with friends. Although each team has an adult coach on the sidelines, most teams and players go out onto the field without set plays and no longer look to their coach for guidance.

Weather delays and forfeits finally brought the top seed and undefeated Team ACE Hardware to the championship game against Team Blue Lagoon last Thursday night at the Center.

Playing with confidence and Offensive MVP Chris Snyder as the quarterback, Blue Lagoon quickly took the lead in the game with a 51-yard pass to Rutger Langley for the touchdown. The unsuccessful point after try left the score 6-0.

Blue Lagoon’s defense stopped the run of ACE Hardware’s Morgan Horesh and caused the incomplete pass of Tyler Brewer to Tuna McCracken, league Defensive MVP. On the third snap of the possession, Roman Langley sacked Brewer, voted the league’s most improved player, giving his team the football.

ACE Hardware returned the defensive favor with a three and out attempt by Blue Lagoon with speed and a flag pull by Connor Ludwig.

After seven minutes of play, the short yardage by David Daigle and first down by McCracken was not enough. Flag pulls by Jenard Dunbar and Roman Langley once again prevented the ACE Hardware score.

Each team had another possession with no luck before the spectacular flag pulls by Daigle and McCracken gave ACE Hardware two points on the stop in the Blue Lagoon end zone resulting in a safety.

With the score at 6-2, Team Ace Hardware went on offense and in five plays found the end zone to go ahead with a score of 6-8. McCracken connected with Ludwig on a bomb with three defenders, putting the football on the Blue Lagoon seven-yard line.

Lining up tight on the line of scrimmage, Horesh snuck out of the crowd to nab the touchdown pass.

The second half of the championship game started with Team ACE Hardware with the football, but Team Blue Lagoon quickly took it back with an interception by Dunbar off of the Brewer pass.

Rutger Langley was Snyder’s target on the first pass of the series. Daigle quickly got the flag pull. The next pass by Snyder bounced off the hands of Rutger Langley taking the game to third down.

Trying to take the football past the midfield line, Snyder was called for pushing against McCracken, turning the ball over on downs.

Brewer’s cousin Travis Bates made the next catch but the team could not make the first down happen, letting Team Blue Lagoon have another crack at the end zone.

A high snap to Dunbar got the pass off, but after being tipped by his receiver ACE Hardware’s Ludwig found the football in his hands and crossed the line for the pick six. The extra point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 6-14.

Blue Lagoon returned the favor with a touchdown interception by Aaryn Scalone. Going for two points, McCracken intercepted the ball in the end zone, preventing the tie.

On their next possession, an incomplete pass led to a bad snap by Roman Langley forcing a third-down play by Blue Lagoon. Bates applied the rushing pressure on the quarterback leading to another interception and touchdown by Team ACE Hardware. Brewer’s runback put the score to 12-20.

The point after the catch in the end zone by Daigle with 54 seconds left in the game solidified the win for his team, ending the season with Team ACE Hardware solidly on top of the league standings with the championship.
