ANNA MARIA – As another sports season came to a close at The Center of Anna Maria Island, the adult co-ed soccer champions earned their stripes last Thursday night against the top-ranked Solid Rock Construction team.

After the Moss team ended Pool America’s season in the round one playoff game played last week, the Ross Built Custom Home squad had their way with Moss Builders on the Island pitch.

Team Ross Built worked their way to the top after defeating Moss Builders in penalty kicks after regulation play to end the first semifinal game last Wednesday. Team Bubble Binz fell victim to the offense of the Solid Rock team in the second round two playoff game.

After spending the season on top, the Solid Rock Construction team worked hard with Raul Loera in goal. The Ross Built offense kept Loera busy during the two halves of play in the final game of the season.

Loera recorded 12 saves in the game for Solid Rock.

Teammates Erica Nielsen and team captain Keith Mahoney each put a point on the scoreboard. Mahoney made the assist on Nielsen’s goal.

Ross Built kept the Solid Rock defense busy to help clinch the win. Mack Heitchue and Kevin Roman finished with a goal and assist each, while Zacharieah Anabtawi had a solo goal in the game.

Adult winter sports at The Center starts on Thursday, Jan. 9 with gridiron action and Thursday, Jan. 23 in the gymnasium with indoor soccer.

Lester Family Fun Day is annual tradition started more than 20 years ago and funded by seasonal Holmes Beach residents Chuck and Joann “Joey” Lester. The Lesters wanted the community to enjoy an event that featured family fun at old-fashioned prices, with 25-cent tickets purchased to enjoy the activities and offerings. Chuck passed away earlier this year. Joey couldn’t attend this year because the Lester home in the Key Royale community was damaged by the hurricanes, but the Lester family still funded the event.

In one corner of the property, children lined up at the Addi’s Pony Parties area to enjoy a pony ride and pet the friendly goats. Two-year-old Holmes Beach resident Olivia Warvington was among those who rode the pony.

“We love it. We come every year,” her mom, Ali, said of the event.

Island business owners rebuild, collaborate, rebound

Hurricanes Helene and Milton took a toll on Anna Maria Island businesses, which are showing their resilience in working together to rebuild and reopen to serve their clientele.

AMI Outfitters and Anna Maria Island Dolphin Tours are prime examples. In the words of Jennifer and Dave Hagey of AMI Outfitters, “As business owners on the Island, we plan for hurricane season, but no one could anticipate months of closure – or a complete rebuild for some. Our store took on up to 23 inches of water with Hurricane Helene and lost valuable inventory, yet we feel fortunate compared to other small business owners who faced even greater devastation.

“Now, we focus on recovery,” Dave Hagey continued. “It’s inspiring to see The Center of Anna Maria Island coordinating volunteers and donations, with Ben Sato at Grub and other local restaurants providing free meals to first responders, residents and volunteers. The support from our loyal customers and businesses like Issa Homes has been incredible. Issa Homes matched our (along with nine other Island businesses) online gift card sales for nearly two weeks. This generosity was completely unexpected and made a huge impact. Our online presence has been critical during this time, helping us stay connected with customers and allowing them to show their support in place of a GoFundMe account. We’re also joining several local pop-up events and plan to donate a portion of our sales to The Center. Now is the time to give back, shop local, and support small businesses.”

“Dave and I see this as an opportunity, not an obstacle, to expand our offerings,” Jennifer Hagey said. “We’ll be adding more women’s and children’s apparel to our traditionally menswear-focused shop. When you visit us next, you can expect a complimentary beer and an enhanced shopping experience.

“To our family and customers who feel like family, your encouragement and belief in our little shop on Pine Avenue mean so much. Your generosity is making a real difference, not only for AMI Outfitters but for the entire community,” she said.

Ben Webb, owner of Anna Maria Island Dolphin Tours and a big supporter of The Center, was on the scene right after the storms passed to assess the damage and prepare to help fellow Islanders rebuild. According to Webb, “Our first priority was to help friends and neighbors with cleanup and to work closely with Chris Culhane at The Center of Anna Maria Island. I have been assisting with providing the dump trailers and roll-off dumpsters residents and businesses need to start the cleanup and recovery process.”

“I’ve also been doing interviews on our Facebook page of different business owners and people giving their take on the storm and their struggles. It’s a chance to share everyone’s personal story,” he said.

The Center of Anna Maria Island has been at the forefront of hurricane relief efforts and their website has valuable information for residents and business owners. “In the aftermath of the storm, we understand many in our community may need assistance with clean-up and recovery. We are offering volunteer support for packing and light clean-up tasks,” The Center’s website states.

Please be aware of the following limitations for volunteer assistance:

• Volunteers cannot remove drywall, cut down trees, or handle heavy demolition tasks;

• For safety reasons, if your home has mold or hazardous conditions, volunteers will not be able to enter or assist inside the house.;

• Volunteers can help with organizing and packing personal items, cleaning up debris from yards (such as leaves, and branches), and minor outdoor clean-up tasks;

• Please ensure all areas where volunteers will work are safe and accessible.

If you are interested in volunteer assistance, please call The Center at 941-778-1908.

Another way to help the community is to attend the Bradenton Gulf Islands Hurricane Relief Concert Rock ‘N’ Support featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd and special guest Marcus King. All proceeds from the Friday, Nov. 15 concert at the Bradenton Area Convention Center go to benefit local hospitality workers affected by the hurricanes.

Supplies also are still available for pick-up at The Center, and anglers who need to order tackle and supplies (fishing reports have been very positive) can shop AMI Outfitters online store.

Now is a great time to make an effort to support all Island businesses as they work to reopen and serve the residents of Anna Maria Island.

Moss Builders undefeated

ANNA MARIA – Youth recreational soccer resumed play last week at The Center of Anna Maria Island. The familiar sound of the cheers from friends and family supporting their players and teams was music to the Island’s ears after several weeks of storm recovery.

After a tied ballgame between La Creperie and Solid Rock Construction in the 8- to 10-year-old league, week three action continued with Adrian Griffin Interiors looking for their second win of the season and team Gulf Drive Café hoping for their first.

Led by coach Keith Mahoney, the Gulf Drive squad handily defeated their opponent 5-0. Everly Chaplinsky scored two of the five goals for her team. Teammates Dominic Cusimano, Chandler LaPensee and Owen Mahoney each successfully struck the soccer ball, sending it past Adrian Griffin goalie Judah Treworgy.

Treworgy had seven saves in the match. Despite his efforts and those of his teammates, the Adrian Griffin Interiors team just could not stop the Gulf Drive team.

Working to stay undefeated, team Moss Builders played the final league match against The Fish Guy Aquarium Services. The 6-0 win proved why the Moss squad is on top of the ranking with a 3-0 record going into week 4 competition.

With playoffs starting Tuesday, Nov. 12, this week’s action will determine the matchups leading to the championship game on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.

PALMETTO – Legendary southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd is coming to Palmetto to assist local hospitality workers impacted by hurricanes Helene and Milton. And they’re bringing blues, rock and southern-soul influenced singer/lead guitarist Marcus King with them as the opening act.

The Rock ‘N’ Support Bradenton Gulf Islands Hurricane Relief Concert will take place on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Palmetto. Tickets go on sale on Monday, Oct. 28 at noon, with ticket prices ranging from $75 to $500. Hosted by The Center of Anna Maria Island and supported by the Manatee County Tourist Development Council (TDC), 100% of the proceeds from the Rock ‘N’ Support benefit concert will support Gulf Island hospitality workers who’ve been displaced due to the recent impacts of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

All proceeds from the Rock ‘N’ Support concert will benefit two local non-profit organizations: Shuckin’ Good Cause and The Center of Anna Maria Island’s Hurricane Relief Fund. Displaced hospitality workers will then be able to apply for grant assistance through the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

The doors will open at 7 p.m., with King taking the stage at 8 p.m. and Lynyrd Skynyrd hitting the stage at 9:30 p.m. The convention center is located at One Haben Blvd. in Palmetto.

In the concert press released posted at The Center of Anna Maria Island website, Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Johnny Van Zant said, “When we got the call, we were happy to jump on board. The band is a Florida band and our manager lives in Sarasota County as well. So, we have family, friends and many fans affected by these storms. If we can raise some money for those in need and also take people away for a night of great music, then hopefully that is a ‘win-win’ and brings a little comfort to the community, then, Let’s Go!”

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album, the current Lynyrd Skynyrd line-up features Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke (Blackfoot), Damon Johnson, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone (Damn Yankees), Keith Christopher, Peter Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle.

“It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music,” Van Zant said in the press release.

Regarding King, the press release says, “Marcus King faces heartache, addiction and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels.”

Floridian Mortgage holds on for championship

Floridian Mortgage holds on for championship

ANNA MARIA –The Center closed out the adult summer season last Thursday night with three games played, and Floridian Mortgage come out on top after a hard-fought 29-27 game against team Fishing with Salty for the championship title.

After beating Salty Printing in the semifinal round of play, top seed Floridian Mortgage faced the Fishing with Salty team, which defeated Moss Builders in their playoff game 52-33. It was anyone’s game up to the final seconds, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm on the field.

Floridian Mortgage started the game on offense and quickly made a statement with a bomb by Chase Richardson to Tim Holly for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Right out of the chute, Richardson’s team was up 7-0 after Cory Banks scored the point after the score.

Fishing with Salty’s attempts to put points on the scoreboard were cut short after Dina DeJesus started her team on the right foot with a completed pass. Holly’s interception on the next play stopped the drive.

Richardson could not capitalize on the turnover, throwing bad passes and leading to a three-and-out series.

Taking over on downs, Fishing with Salty was ready as the team steadily marched down the field with short passes. Dylan Doyle, on second down, took the football into the pass-only zone in Floridian Mortgage territory.

Scoring its first touchdown, Jonathan Soultatos squeezed through defenders to score for team Fishing, taking the score to 7-6. Doyle scored the extra point.

With the score tied, Richardson’s first target was Holly for a long run after the reception. Rex Kesten caught the football near the endzone after an injury timeout due to a DeJesus injury.

Tracking the front of the endzone, Tyler Brewer caught the ball for Floridian’s second TD of the game, with the finishing touch by Banks.

Leading once again, Floridian Mortgage played strong defense at their own endzone with their opponent in scoring position. Making the stop, Richardson returned to the field with his team, continuing to struggle.

Richardson overthrew Holly but eventually found Kesten for 6 points. Holly added a point to the scoreboard with a catch in the endzone.

After moving the ball to near midfield, Brewer got the call walking just over the first down line with the football overhead. With the clock down to the final minute of the first half of the game, Richardson found Brewer as a second option receiver on second down with the clock running.

With the football sitting on the 7-yard line, Floridian’s hope of scoring before halftime was dashed with another incomplete throw.

On offense, Fishing with Salty was 14 points behind. Rushing Matt Briley, Holly sacked the quarterback in the endzone for a safety, giving team Floridian two points and possession of the ball.

First pass out, Richardson hit Holly, catching for a first down out-of-bounds with less than 10 seconds on the scoreboard clock. An impeding the rusher penalty for Floridian Mortgage and interception in the endzone by Briley ended the first half of play.

Fishing with Salty had the football to start the half with a short yardage play. The second snap resulted in a bomb to Doyle for 6 points. Soultatos scored the extra point, making it a 9-point ball game.

Three incomplete Richardson throws later, Fishing with Salty was back on offense with catches by Octavious Cole. A critical first down catch by Miguel Rodriguez kept the forward progress moving.

On second down, QB Briley kept the ball for long yardage after a quick pitch back from his teammate under center. With the football at the 7-yard line, Soultatos was alone in the right corner of the endzone for the TD.

After the point after conversion by the Fishing squad, Richardson mixed it up, running with the football after a quick pitch from Holly two plays in a row, resulting in a first down with less than 12 minutes left in the game.

Standing his ground and avoiding a penalty, Holly and Soultatos had a standoff at the line of scrimmage as Richardson searched for an open player down field. After two bad passes, Richardson’s throw on third down was not caught by the intended receiver thanks to tight defense by Fishing with Salty.

Fishing with Salty’s Cole caught a big pass on third down for a TD, advancing the score to 29-27. With a possible win in sight, Brewer’s reception in the endzone denied the additional point to team Fishing.

A mid-air collision took Brewer and Briley out of the rest of the game with critical seconds left to play. Despite all their efforts, Fishing with Salty could not make up the large scoring gap made by Floridian Mortgage early in the game.

The game was not pretty, but team Floridian Mortgage was named the league’s champion, winning over Fishing with Salty by two points.

Semifinals set for flag football

ANNA MARIA – After a two-week delay due to torrential downpours, the Island’s recreational adult co-ed flag football league playoffs started last Thursday with the eight teams vying for a spot in the semifinals.

In the closest game of the night, both teams came off the field drenched from the humid air with Floridian Mortgage clinching the first semifinal spot 32-24. Winning by eight points over Solid Rock Air Conditioning, the top-ranked team had to fight hard under the heat of the sun.

Quarterback Chase Richardson threw for five touchdowns to Tim Holly, Rex Kesten and Zach Wyrick. Tyler Brewer and Kesten each added a point to the scoreboard with catches from Richardson after the team’s TDs.

On defense, Derrick Carey had two interceptions off throws by Solid Rock Air Conditioning quarterback Dominick Otteni. The Solid Rock defense kept the pressure on with 20 team flag pulls.

The pressure on the Floridian QB forced three Richardson interceptions to help keep Solid Rock in the game for the two halves of play. Karri Stephens, Zaon Williams and Otteni each snagged a Richardson pass, giving their team the football.

Offensively, Otteni found his targets for four touchdowns to score 24 points. Williams caught for 18, while Stephens was the receiver for six.

The Solid Rock Air Conditioning team could not find the endzone for a point after conversion, reducing their score by four points and dampening momentum each time the team scored. With the loss, Floridian Mortgage plays Moss Builders at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Moss Builders secured its place in the next round of the playoffs with a win against Solid Rock Electrical 33-12. Brothers Moss faced each other in the QB position with Ryan Moss out-throwing Jonathan six touchdowns to two.

Each brother had two interceptions in the game. J. Moss’ interceptions came from the hands of his cousin, Greg Moss, playing for Moss Builders. Solid Rock Electrical’s Jesse Skipper and Zach Long made the takeaways from R. Moss.

A different family battle continued in the game with the faces of the Solid Rock group. James Roadman and Peggy Smith, in-laws, scored the touchdowns for Moss Builders, while Evelyn and Zach Long, also in-laws of Roadman and Smith, made plays happen for Solid Rock Electrical.

G. Moss and Shawn Balvin also scored for the Moss Builders team. Their counterparts, Brandon Rolland and Skipper each found the endzone with the football in hand to score for team Solid Rock Electrical.

Earning their spot in the semifinal round, Salty Printing found their groove, defeating team Slim’s Place 33-12. The Slim’s QB was held to two touchdown passes to Jaden Grant. Defensively, the team could not stop Salty with only three recorded flag pulls by Isaiah Lambert, Jana Whitehead and Rodriguez.

On the other side of the field, Charles “Tuna” McCracken threw for four touchdowns, finding lifelong friend Blake Balais for two. Raul Loera and Matt Manger were McCracken’s targets for the other TDs.

Finding his footing on the gridiron, Loera scored two of the three extra points, with Christian Hampton putting one point on the scoreboard.

The Salty defense was on fire with two sacks and three interceptions, including a pick-six by Balais in the win.

Salty Printing faces Fishing with Salty on Thursday, Sept. 12 in the second semifinal game. Fishing with Salty defeated Prosper Bradenton 35-18 to move them to the next round of play.

In a lopsided game, the Fishing team’s Miguel Rodriguez threw for three TDs. Dina DeJesus scored twelve points, with teammates Matthew Briley and Rodriguez catching the other two.

Rodriguez showed his versatility on the field with a touchdown reception from Jonathan Soultatos. He was also the only player of the night to put a rushing TD in the statistics.

Scoring for Prosper Bradenton, QB Ray Gardner hit Tony Giammari twice and found Connor Ludwig for six points in the team’s final loss of the season.

The championship game is scheduled to be played following the last semifinal game on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m. at The Center to close out the season.

AMI Outfitters, Positive Waves champions

ANNA MARIA – Youth indoor soccer resumed last week after the Island recovered from the recent tropical storm. The action in the gymnasium brought the summer season to a close with two champions reigning, teams Positive Waves and AMI Outfitters.

The older kids started the week with the first round of playoffs with all four teams battling for the two slots in the final game of the season. After beating their opponents last Monday night, team Jiffy Lube and AMI Outfitters went head-to-head later in the week.

Last Tuesday night, the 8- to 10-year-olds had a night filled with indoor soccer play with the first round of playoffs between the Gulf Drive Café team and Progressive Cabinetry. Easily coming out on top, Gulf Drive faced the Positive Waves squad to determine which team would face team Shady Lady Horticultural Services in the big game.

Shady Lady Horticultural Services topped the Solid Rock Construction team in the first round of playoffs, allowing the team to play for the championship against Positive Waves.

Coming off their win against team Gulf Drive Café, the Positive Waves team was ready to face their opponent to earn the title. A solo goal off the foot of Enzo De-Oliveira, an assist by Grady Neidzwick, and nine saves by teammate Hudsen Smoljanovich just were not enough for Gulf Drive.

Positive Wave struck and scored with goals by Sebastian Cordova, Ryan Greenberg and Parker Svoboda. On defense, Kellen Reed protected his team’s goal, making nine critical stops and helping the Positive team capture the championship.

Also scoring three goals, team AMI Outfitters netted their championship title against Jiffy Lube 3-0. The Outfitters’ defense and goalkeeping of Jordan Tobey prevented their opponent from putting any points on the scoreboard.

Wes Saxon scored two of the three goals, with a single by Matthew Darak. Tobey made 11 saves in the big game.

Tobey’s counterpart on the Jiffy Lube team, Cohen Weber, tried to keep his team in the game with 16 nice stops as goalkeeper, but the team’s offense just could not make anything happen to score.

As the youth indoor soccer season ends, the adult co-ed flag football league enters the first round of playoffs. With all eight teams vying for the final two spots in the bracket, any of the contenders can come out on top as the league’s champion on Thursday, Sept. 5.

ANNA MARIA – With the kids taking the week off from indoor soccer, the sporting action was focused on the four adult co-ed flag football games at The Center last Thursday night. The night of four high-scoring games took the season past the halfway mark, marching toward the playoffs.

In the game of the week, team Salty Printing faced the quick defensive pressure of Slim’s Place. Working hard to widen their lead in the first half of the game, Captain Matt Manger’s team wobbled a bit, keeping it a one-point game after 20 minutes of play.

The stretched-out, one-handed catches of Slim’s Place’s Anthony Mannino were almost the downfall of the Salty team. With a seemingly sticky glove, Mannino caught passes and made interceptions to help his team keep the score close.

Before the half, Manger’s throw to Charles “Tuna” McCracken went off his fingertips into the hand of Mannino. The turnover led to six points for the Slim’s Place team.

Mannino, on offense, scored three of the team’s four touchdowns, all from the passes of quarterback Cruz Rodriguez. Two one-point conversion catches rounded out his offensive game stats.

Rodriguez scored on his own with a rushing TD. He also connected with teammate Isaiah Lambert for six. Contributing on defense, Jaden Grant put the pressure on the Salty QB, earning a sack.

The game leader went back and forth during the second half of the game.

Playing the option and using the arm of McCracken, Salty Printing scored four touchdowns from his passes. With Manger throwing for one, catches from Cody Allen, Christian Hampton and Manger from McCracken earned 18 points.

Blake Balais was the target for two TD receptions. Blake, along with teammates Manger and Raul Loera, caught critical catches after three of their five touchdowns to win the game.

The Salty Printing defense caught fire despite a game filled with missed flag pulls and defensive stops. The final offensive series for Slim’s Place was quickly put to a stop by team Salty.

The game came down to clock management, with important seconds left on the scoreboard. Holding onto a one-point lead, McCracken had possession of the football and wisely stayed inbounds without scoring to let the last second tick off the clock.

Team Floridian Mortgage lost their first game of the season against Solid Rock Air Conditioning 27-26. Fishing with Salty won, handing Moss Builders their fourth loss heading into Week Six of play.

In the final game of the week, Solid Rock Electrical won over team Prosper Bradenton.

Each of the eight teams will compete in the playoffs, making their final regular season rankings important with two regular season weeks to be played.

Team Positive Ways undefeated

Team Positive Ways undefeated

ANNA MARIA – The summer heat was matched by the heat on The Center’s indoor soccer floor as Island area youth finished the fifth week of play this week. In the six-game regular season, last week’s action brought the teams in the two age group leagues closer to the playoffs and the championship game.

On top for the 8- to 10-year-old league is team Positive Ways, remaining undefeated after week 4. With one win each, Gulf Drive Café, Shady Lady Horticultural Services and Solid Rock Construction continue to vie for the big win and title at the end of the season. Team Progressive Cabinetry is still seeking its first win of the season.

In last Wednesday night’s games, Sebastian Cordova had the hot foot with four goals and an assist for the Positive Waves team. Teammate Ryan Greenberg added two points to the scoreboard for his team. Defensively, Silas Whitehead made seven critical stops to help with the win.

Shady Lady’s solo goal was scored by Harbor Smoljanovich.

Scoring by Leo Burns and Joseph Caballero completed the nine total goals for Gulf Drive Café, each player with an assist. Goalkeeper Titus Moss had six saves in the game for his team.

Rafa Price got four shots past Moss, while Everly Chaplinsky and Ellison Maynard added another three points to the stat sheet for Progressive Cabinetry. Protecting his team’s goal, Easton Freeman is credited with 14 saves against the Gulf Drive offense.

In the 11- to 14-year-old league, team AMI Outfitters entered week five play with a 3-0-1 record, topping the ranks for the older age group. Jiffy Lube is short one win over the leader with Solid Rock Construction hot on their heels.

The Cloud Pest Control team continues to work hard on the indoor soccer pitch to earn their first win of the season.

Ending the game in a 4-4 tie, Solid Rock Construction and Cloud Pest Control met up on the indoor pitch in the first match-up of the week in the older age group. Team AMI Outfitters won against Jiffy Lube by a single goal, closing out the scoring at 7-6.

With playoffs one week away, the summer heat pales to fast-paced action at The Center in the youth indoor soccer leagues.

ANNA MARIA – The Anna Maria Island community is coming out in support of Mackenzie Morgan, Jonathan Anasis, their 3 1/2-month-old son, River Anasis, and their young daughter, Vayda Anasis.

On July 13, the Rise Up for River Benefit: A Community Rally for Hope and Healing event took place at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Co-hosted by the Anna Maria-based Waterfront Restaurant, Rise Up for River served as a fundraiser for River’s ongoing battle with Primary HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis), an extremely rare genetic immune deficiency disorder.

The fundraising activities included live and silent auctions and raffles featuring items donated by the greater Anna Maria Island business community. The event also included live music by Trevor Bystrom and guests, Caribbean food and more.

When contacted on Sunday, Center Executive Director Chris Culhane said he probably wouldn’t have a final fundraising total until Tuesday.

According to the family’s GoFundMe page, “Support River’s Fight Against Primary HLH,” River was born “healthy, happy and normal” on March 30. He later developed a 103.5-degree fever and was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, where he was tested for sepsis and acute liver failure. River tested positive for rhinovirus and enterovirus, was placed on antibiotics, steroids and other medications and later diagnosed with Primary HLH.

Since then, River has had a bone marrow aspiration, a lumbar puncture/spinal tap and blood, platelet and plasma transfusions and he’ll need a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy to survive.

“Our family is down to one income and beginning to struggle with expenses. Any donation is greatly appreciated by our family,” Morgan stated on the GoFundMe page.

As of Sunday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had raised $22,659 of the original $25,000 fundraising goal.

Sunday morning, Morgan shared this message on Facebook: “Huge thank you for everyone involved in making the #riseupforriver benefit. Thank you for all the continued love and support! Was a great turnout yesterday.”

When contacted later in the day, she said, “The event was great. So much love and support from the community.”

She also expressed her thanks to The Center, The Waterfront Restaurant, Slim’s Place, Karen Place, Dee Munn, A.J. Latteri and everyone else who assisted with and attended the Rise Up for River fundraiser.

Center summer sports kick off

Center summer sports kick off

ANNA MARIA – The gymnasium at The Center of Anna Maria Island was filled with excitement as the summer sports season started on the Island last Tuesday night. Getting out of the heat, youth indoor soccer kicked off the season on the inside pitch while the adults heated up the field with flag football action.

The youngest players, ages 3-7, played scrimmages as part of their developmental work with the older kids playing in head-to-head matches. Four of the five 8- to 10-year-old league teams played with Shady Lady Horticultural Services sitting out the first week.

Team Positive Waves beat the Progressive Cabinetry team by three goals. With the final score at 5-2, Ryan Greenberg had the hot foot for the Positive Waves squad. Hitting three shots, Greenberg’s scoring was joined by solo goals by Sebastian Cordova and Silas Whitehead.

In the win, Parker Svoboda was credited with an assist. Goalie Kellen Reed had five saves in the game against the Progressive Cabinetry offense.

Assists by Jackson Griffin, Ellison Maynard and Rafa Price helped keep the Progressive team in the game for two halves of fast-paced action.

With an arsenal of shots coming their way, Wesley Bekkerus worked hard, successfully saving seven of the Positive Wave shots in the first half of the game. Griffin relieved Bekkerus, making 11 nice stops.

Ending the second game in a tie, teams Gulf Drive Café and Solid Rock Construction each scored 10 points in their first game of the indoor season. Gulf Drive’s points were scored by Dallas Biggers, Joseph Caballero and Leo Burns, with six, three and a single goal, respectively.

Game statistics note two assists by Biggers and three for Burns.

Both teams put two goalkeepers in goal during the tied ballgame. On the Gulf Drive side, Everett Hood made nine saves and Titus Moss stopped eight shots. Solid Rock’s Elijah Roadman had 13 strong stops, while Carson Long saved six shots on goal.

Solid Rock’s scoring came off the boots of two players. Samuel Raulerson scored his solo goal. Teammate Matthew Darak used his skills and the boards to put nine points on the scoreboard.

With only four teams, the teams will get to know their competition well. Week one play matched up Jiffy Lube and AMI Outfitters. Finishing the game in another tie, each team scored eight goals.

Jiffy Lube’s Callin Westfall scored half of the points for his team. Hudson West and Gunnar Maize split the remaining four goals. Assist credits went to Maize with three and West with a single.

Putting three players at the net, Jiffy Lube’s Nolan Anderson had five stops, while Parker Svoboda made three and Maize saved one. AMI Outfitters followed suit with their five-person defensive attack in goal.

Sharing the responsibility, Jordan Tobey led the pack with six saves in the game. With three stops, Grayson Cohen helped his team with the 8-8 tie. Mackenzie Cohen, Mackenna Darak and Maggie Neidzwick each had a single save in the final game of the night.

Offensively, Wes Saxon scored six points. G. Cohen got the soccer ball past the goalie once, along with Matthew Darak, each claiming one point. Assisting with the scoring for AMI Outfitters, G. Cohen was credited with two passes that led to the successful shot.

Matthew Darak and Neidzwick each had assists in the game, adding to their game accomplishments.

In what looks to prove to be an exciting adult co-ed flag football season, eight teams took to the gridiron last Thursday night. The four high-scoring games showed the skills of the players this season.

Team Floridian Mortgage earned a win against Moss Builders 26-25. Also scoring 26 points, Fishing with Salty beat the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team by five points in the second game of the season.

Prosper Bradenton beat Salty Printing 27-25. The Salty team played without their quarterback, Charles “Tuna” McCracken. In the week’s blowout, Solid Rock Electrical scored 41 points against team Slim’s Place. Slim’s Place finished the game by putting 25 points on the board, ending week one flag football action on the Island.

City commission approves Bridge Street parties

City commission approves Bridge Street parties

BRADENTON BEACH – City commissioners approved Australian pine tree removals, monthly street parties on Bridge Street, a new member of the Scenic Highway Committee and donations to local community centers at their June 20 meeting.

SUNDOWN GET DOWN APPROVED

City commissioners heard details about the planned Bridge Street Merchants Association’s Sundown Get Down monthly street party events on Bridge Street. The events will be held at 4 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month beginning on July 18 with a retro beach party theme.

“There will be additional trolleys, a kid-zone and family-friendly themes,” Leah Brown of Big Idea Events said. “The goal is to drive business to Bridge Street’s established businesses.”

The monthly events received an open container waiver from the city. Bradenton Beach Police Department Lt. Lenard Diaz said the department will be fully staffed for the events.

Bridge Street will be closed to vehicular traffic during the events and commissioners expressed concerns about parking.

Sam Negrin of Beach to Bay Investments said the Shawn Kaleta-owned parking lot at the corner of Bridge Street and Gulf Drive will be available at either zero or reduced fees during the street parties.

“Yes, parking fees will either be waived or greatly reduced for the events,” Negrin said.

Merchants will allow for the use of public restrooms during the events.

Commissioners unanimously approved a motion for the monthly event to run from July through December.

AUSTRALIAN PINES REMOVAL APPROVED

Commissioners unanimously approved a $7,500 bid from Sarasota-based Harley’s Tree Service to remove two Australian pine trees on city property around 1102 Gulf Drive N. with funds to come from the city-wide tree trimming budget line item.

A second bid for $7,600 from Harley’s Tree Service to remove nine Australian pines from Children’s Park and Herb Dolan Park was also unanimously approved by the commission with funds to come from the half-cent sales tax fund.

NEW MEMBER ON SCENIC HIGHWAY COMMITTEE

Commissioners unanimously approved the appointment of Bradenton Beach resident Brie Bender to the Scenic Highway Committee.

“I’ve been a resident in Bradenton Beach since 2019 and I’m interested in seeing how I can give back to the community,” Bender said to commissioners. “I’ve been very involved in the community in South Carolina.”

The committee serves as an advocacy group for the Bradenton Beach Scenic Highway corridor.

Bender listed her occupation as director of brokerage operations at INNOVATE Real Estate.

“We appreciate you being here,” Mayor John Chappie said.

CITY DONATION SPLIT

With an available city budget of $4,750 for donations to Island community centers, commissioners voted to donate two-thirds of that amount to the Bradenton Beach-based Annie Silver Community Center and one-third to The Center of Anna Maria Island in Anna Maria.

City commissioners unanimously approved a donation of $3,182 to Annie Silver for its programs and $1,568 to The Center of Anna Maria Island for programs to help with the organization’s senior program collaborations with the Annie Silver Community Center.

Commissioner Ralph Cole is the liaison to The Center of Anna Maria Island and Commissioner Deborah Scaccianoce is the liaison to the Annie Silver Community Center.

Progressive Cabinetry takes championship

Progressive Cabinetry takes championship

ANNA MARIA – The spring adult co-ed soccer season on the Island started with 10 full teams of players young and not so young, traveling from Sarasota, Palmetto and beyond to hit the pitch for the last three months.

Last Thursday night, two teams faced off for the final game of the season and bragging rights as Island soccer champions.

After two halves of play, the exciting game ended in a tie. Tim Holly scored the first and only goal for the Ross Built Custom Home team in the first half of the big game. Leo Gonzalez scored the tying goal for Progressive Cabinetry after halftime.

The strong defensive efforts by both teams kept the scoring low and goalkeepers busy. Each team is known for their shooting and Progressive’s Tyler Bekkerus made eight saves in the team’s win.

On his side of the field, Ross Built’s main keeper, Max Gazzo, worked hard with a recorded 14 stops of his opponents’ strikes. Taking Gazzo’s place at the net, Eliza Faillace made two saves in the game.

The title of champion for the season came down to overtime play. Using Golden Goal overtime play, Progressive’s team captain, Keith Mahoney, was the first to strike and first to score in overtime, giving his team the big 2-1 win and championship title at The Center, and ending another great season of soccer on Anna Maria Island.

Adult soccer final match set

ANNA MARIA – More than two months of adult soccer action on the Island led to a showdown in the final games of the season this week.

Semifinal playoff action saw teams Ross Built Custom Homes and Progressive Cabinetry outplay their opponents, making way for them to take the last two slots in the league’s bracket.

In the first game of the night last on Thursday, Ross Built had an easy time of their win against team Pool America. The team’s active offense led to the 6-1 win.

Pool America’s Brandon Rolland scored the team’s only goal in the game, while teammate Jessica Reukberg was put to the test as the keeper. Reukberg is credited with six saves in the game against the onslaught of shots from her opponents.

Team captain Chris Klotz put an assist into the game statistics.

Also with six recorded saves, Max Gazzo supported team Ross Built defensively as goalie.

Ross Built Custom Home’s offense pursued the Pool American goal with five scorers and two additional team members with assists. Jake Ross, son of team captain Greg Ross, led the team in scoring with two points.

The father-son scoring trinity was realized with additional goals by G. Ross and Jake’s twin brother, Andrew. Dean Hinterstoisser and Tim Holly shot the other two points for Ross Built.

Hinterstoisser is credited with an assist in the game for Ross Built, with Helio Gomez and Ted Hurst with assists of their own to help with the team’s victory.

The scoring in the second game of the night started in the first minute of play, with Progressive Cabinetry taking the lead early and ultimately winning the game against team Salty Printing. The close semifinal game was won by a single point, making the early Progressive goal all too important.

The six winning shots came off the boots of team captain Keith Mahoney, with three goals, and Junior Martines and Osvaldo Cabello. Martines slid two shots by Salty Printing goalkeeper Charles “Tuna” McCracken.

Alex Aviles, Leo Gonzalez and Raul Loera each had a single assist for the Progressive Cabinetry team. In goal, Tyler Bekkerus made seven critical saves for his team, aiding the squad in securing the last slot in the season finale.

Kevin Roman’s Salty Printing team worked hard on the field to stop the Progressive charge. The 14 saves by McCracken exemplified the offensive attack released by his opponents.

Roman, the Salty team captain, dominated the field and his team’s scoring with four goals. Tyler Brewer made a solo goal for Salty Printing, working to keep the team in the hunt for the championship honors.

Salty Printing came up just short of the championship goal, 6-5, paving the way for the final matchup: Progressive Cabinetry versus Ross Built Custom Homes. The final game of the season for the Island’s adult co-ed soccer league is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 on The Center’s pitch.
