Two sports, two champs: Signature Granite and Slim’s Place

After winning the semifinal game against Ugly Grouper 9-2, Signature Granite solidified their place in the final game of the soccer season against Slim’s Place.

Slim’s Place also scored nine goals in their semifinal matchup against Sato Real Estate.

Signature Granite dominated the final game with seven unanswered goals. Zach Leib led the scoring for his team with three goals in the game. Lindsey Styka had two goals and two assists in the big game.

Despite struggles in the backfield, Slim’s Place’s keeper Ryan Moss had nine saves recorded in the game. Steve Oelfke had four saves for Signature Granite.

Goals by Olsin Crean and Ugur Durmaz secured the win for the team lead by veteran Kris Yavalar, as well as the return of Zoran Kolega and Toby Wickland to the league.

Last Thursday night in adult flag football action, Slim’s Place defeated Gulfview Windows and doors 23-12, putting them into the championship game.

The second semifinal game was a close one with Sandbar coming out on top against Moss Builders, 18-17.

In the final game of the night and the season, Slim’s Place eked out the win against Sandbar 34-33.

Connor Haughey led the Slim’s Place squad, while putting in the record books three passing touchdowns as the QB. Haughey also had two scoring receptions, an interception and two points after the touchdown in the championship game.

Keith McQuillen threw for two touchdowns and had two points after adding to the Slim’s Place team stats. Dominick Otteni and Luis Campos contributed to the Slim’s Place scoring with receiving yards that put them in the end zone.

The four throws for touchdowns by quarterback Chase Richardson just were enough. Anthony Mannino found himself on the receiving end of the Richardson passes for touchdowns.

Mannino’s night included a pick six and an extra point conversion play. Tim Holly scored the other TD with a nice grab of the Richardson throw.

To round out the scoring, Dylan Doyle scored two points after the touchdown for Sandbar.

The efforts of the Sandbar squad just were not quite enough against Slim’s Place, this season’s adult flag football champions at The Center.

Youth and experience take football championship

Youth and experience take football championship

Quarantine delays pushed the end of the spring adult co-ed flag football season almost into the summer, with the final games played last Thursday night at The Center.

After threats of rain, in high humidity, team Firkins Automotive eked out the win in the championship game to end another football season, with the final score 26-25. In the final seconds of the game an extra point conversion kept the game from going into overtime play.

Moss Builders may have finished second, but the all-around talent and veteran experience of the squad made the team the favorite going into the match-up.

Team captain Ryan Moss had three passing touchdowns in the game, with his scoring targets Jordan DeMers and Dina Calvary. Calvary had eight receptions in the game. Moss brother Jon had two catches including an extra point conversion.

Teammate Bradley Coleman had the football hit his hands twice for yardage. On defense he made a huge play with an interception that he ran back for a touchdown.

The efforts of Moss Builders could not stop Firkins Automotive’s enthusiastic play.

The youthful squad was smartly led by Jason Sato, who has played in the league since its inception, along with Chase Richardson, who has played in area leagues for years. With three touchdown passes in the statistic books, Sato threw the extra point pass that sealed the deal for Firkins.

Cory Banks and Matt Briley had extra point catches to their credit in the big game. Richardson made a TD reception, along with teammates Briley and Banks to put a total of 26 points on the scoreboard to win the championship game.

Excitement in The Center gym with indoor soccer

After a forfeit by Sato Real Estate, giving Slim’s Place a win in the adult indoor soccer league, Gulfview Windows and Doors won their match-up against Ross Built Construction by five goals, finishing with a 13-8 score.

Goalies Max Gazzo and Brandin Holcomb were neck and neck with 17 and 18 saves, respectively. But Brandin and his team came out on top.

Gulfview’s team captain, Keith Mahoney, had four goals in the game with Jessica Williams and John Haggerty each with one.

Connor Bystrom scored five points for the Ross Built team. The indoor soccer ball found the goal once for teammate Chris Chicaro to round out the team’s scoring.

Joey Hutchinson’s Duncan Real Estate team took the win against Chris Klotz and Pool America last Tuesday night.

Both teams spread out the goalkeeping efforts. Klotz had 13 saves in the game, with Andrew Sullivan and Olaf Krause making a combined 12 saves for Pool America.

Hutchinson kept the soccer ball out of the net eight times, while Robb Marshall, Cole Peterson and Zach Lieb made saves of their own.

Lieb was the high scorer of the game with six goals. Hutchison had four of his own, with Jenna Steininger, Damir Glavan, Zack Long and Peterson each having solo strikes that got by the Pool America goalie.

In their loss, Pool America’s Gerardo Urbiola scored three times, Klotz scored two goals and Omar Polar put it in the net once, giving the team their six goals.

The youth flag football league came to an end this week with championship play on Tuesday night.

Ugly Grouper’s Keith McQuillen scored the only touchdown for his team during the second game last Thursday night.

In a nail biter, Moss Builders took the win in the last seconds of the game against Rays Ramblings. Winning by one point, Ryan and Jon Moss both threw touchdown passes, and each scored for their squad.

Ending the game before Rays Ramblings could make the winning TD, Moss Builders’ Dina Calvary made the game-ending sack on Danny Murphy with no time on the clock and third down.

The last game of the night was a close one, with a two-point win by Lancaster Designs. Beach Bums’ scoring by Jaret Rojas, Matthew Manger and Octavious Cole just was not enough.

Brandon Kull threw two scoring passes in the game to Cameron Kawcaki and Greg Hereikbo. Kull’s pick and run to the end zone along with Kawcaki’s extra point put much-needed points on the scoreboard to end the night of football at the Island’s community center.

Youth flag football winners play through cold for victory

In the bitter winter cold that hit the island last Friday night, five teams in the youth flag football program at The Center finished the week undefeated.

Going into week four of play, MuniPlan and Hashmark Sports find themselves with no losses in the 14- to 17-year-old league. Team Killer Bait suffered one loss after completing three games, giving them a 2-1 record.

MuniPlan had a bye week, while Hashmark Sports easily got their second win of the season against Gulf Drive Café.

Hashmark Sports’ defense dominated with five interceptions by Shawn Balvin and Nate and Noah Costello. Noah’s interception resulted in a pick six.

Nate Costello nabbed a touchdown reception. Teammate Chance Hayward caught three TD passes.

In the 11- to 13-year-old league, Progressive Cabinetry is the only remaining undefeated team with two wins in the season. Playing their third game last week, Team Solid Rock Construction ended with 2-1 in the record books, with a loss against Progressive Cabinetry.

Despite the loss, Solid Rock’s Luke Winsper had two sacks in the game and Jack Mattick scored twice with a run and reception.

The point after made by Progressive Cabinetry was the difference in the close and well-fought game that ended with the score of 12-13.

Progressive’s Matthew Hennesey passed for one touchdown to Kenneth Nieding. Luke Bowes scored on the ground with a rushing TD and made the critical extra point for his team.

HSH Designs and Diamond Turf finished the night with no losses also with the 2-0 record. Moss Builders got their second win in the season putting their record at 2-1.

With the night off, HSH Designs’ wins in the first two weeks put them in good company with Diamond Turf.

Diamond Turf beat the Rays Ramblings squad by 32 points. Two interceptions returned for touchdowns by Maddox Culhane and Carson Clover contributed to the team’s win. Culhane’s scoring included two rushing touchdowns, one catch for points, and an extra point.

Clover also scored with receiving and rushing yards on top of his interception.

Jack McCarthy threw for Rays Ramblings only score. His target was Kellan Hunt who also had an interception in the game.

Five more regular season weeks of play still remain, making it anyone’s season to win.

Gardner’s Progressive Cabinetry dominates

Gardner’s Progressive Cabinetry dominates

Going into the fifth week of adult co-ed flag football action at The Center of Anna Maria Island, two of the three games were not played due to forfeits but the friendly rivalry between Ray Gardner and Tim Shaughnessy did not disappoint.

Missing his late pick-ups, Don Purvis and Lexi Sato, Gardner was forced to play with just four men on the field against the nearly full Lancaster Design squad. Gardner’s Progressive Cabinetry team showed it did not need the fifth player or the quarterback strength of Purvis to take the win last Thursday night.

As castmates in the annual Murder Mystery fundraiser at the Center, members of Team Progressive Cabinetry, Ray Gardner and Don Purvis, and Team Lancaster Design, Brianna Roberts, Mike Shaughnessy and Caleb Roberts, work together and have team chemistry, but on the gridiron, the individuals play hard for their respective teams.

To start the action after four minutes of play, quarterback T. Shaughnessy, brother of Brianna Roberts, found his favorite target, brother-in-law Caleb Roberts, for the first touchdown of the game. League veteran Karri Stephens caught the extra point throw in the end zone to take the early lead at 7-0.

Gardner and company quickly met the challenge with a touchdown and extra point of their own. On the second snap of the series, Ben Sato caught a short pitch but gained significant yardage for a first down.

League newcomer Connor Haughey scored the first touchdown for Progressive Cabinetry despite immense defensive pressure by B. Roberts on quarterback Gardner. Sato made the reception for the point after tying the game at 7-7.

Haughey showed his defensive ability by getting a reaching hand between the football and Stephens on the first down play. Haughey disrupted Lancaster Design’s offensive push by nabbing the C. Roberts pass intended for Shaughnessy.

The flag pull by C. Roberts prevented the pick six, but Progressive Cabinetry quickly found the end zone and put six more points on the scoreboard with a Sato touchdown catch.

Looking to tie the ball game, if not pull ahead, Lancaster Design struggled to put together plays. After a reception by Lane Burnett, two incomplete passes put the football back into the capable hands of Gardner.

With 26 seconds left on the first half clock, Haughey and Sato put the Progressive team in scoring position. Haughey took the ball after the snap and hit Zachary Holder for the touchdown and point after, advancing the score to 7-20.

Lancaster Design had another chance to score, but Sato’s speed led to a quarterback sack on the first down. The second down and last play of the half showcased the speed and agility of both the ball carrier Stephens and defender Gardner.

The second half started with Progressive Cabinetry on offense, but the Lancaster defense and non-stop effort by B. Roberts quickly gave the football back to Shaughnessy’s team.

Keeping the win within reach, C. Roberts and Shaughnessy both hit Stephens to gain big yardage. Haughey’s flag pulls temporarily kept the Lancaster Design squad out of the end zone. Stephens’ moves led him to the score, closing the Progressive lead to seven points.

Flag pulls by Jake Parsons stopped Haughey and Gardner on the first two plays of Progressive’s possession. After taking the ball to the 10-yard line, a scrambling Gardner finally found Holder at the back of the end zone for the team’s fourth touchdown of the game with less than six minutes left to play.

Unable to score, with incomplete passes by the team patriarch Mike Shaughnessy and C. Roberts, Progressive Cabinetry took over on offense for another Haughey touchdown with 47 seconds left on the clock.

Roberts closed out the game with a nice reception, ending with the final score at 13-33.

Island Charms takes the win

Heading into the second half of the youth flag football season, the four teams in the 11- to 14-year-old league took to the field at The Center of Anna Maria Island. In the first game of the night, Coach Jim Collins lead his Island Charms team to a big win last Wednesday night against Groom’s Automotive, coached by Tom Baugher.

The battle on the football field was a good one with the two teams each making key plays and keeping the opponent on their toes.

Team Island Charms started on defense with a strong stand against Team Groom’s Automotive offense. Three snaps and out, along with an impressive flag pull by Jackson Pakbaz, gave the football to Island Charms.

Isaiah Mondon started the play for Island Charms, taking the football just short of the midfield line. Payton Harlan was the team’s QB’s next target. Harlan moved the ball to the Groom’s three-yard line. Despite the march down the field, Island Charms could not cross the goal line, leaving the score 0-0.

On the second possession, Kieran Cloutier gained 15 yards before the flag pull by Evan Talucci. Groom’s continued to gain critical yardage on the second down with a touchdown pass on the third snap of the possession.

Nicholas Yatros caught the extra point pass giving Groom’s a seven-point lead.

On the fourth play of the series, Island Charms scored its first touchdown, shrinking the Groom’s lead with the score at 7-6.

With six seconds left on the scoreboard for the first half of the game, Groom’s began working on offense, but could not make it to midfield. Mondon ended the possession with a near interception.

Mondon, on offense, made a first down play for Island Charms on the first snap. Teammate Julian Lazzara followed up with a nice run taking the game to the one-minute warning.

Island Charms’ late penalty and a short run by Mondon ended the half without putting points on the board.

Looking to increase its lead, Island Charms started the final half of the game with a nice play by Talucci that took the football just short of the first down line. After gaining the first down, Yatros’s flag pull stopped the play before his opponent entered the end zone.

At the quarterback position, Harlan showed great patience, allowing Mondon to break away from the defense with a beautiful reception at the back of the field for the touchdown, pushing the score to 12-7 with Island Charms in the lead.

Brilliantly reading the play, Island Charms’ Harrison Schenerlein nabbed the pass by Yatros for a pick six, scoring the final points of the game.

Despite strong efforts by both teams, neither team could find its way into the end zone, ending the game with the score of 18-7 and a victory for Island Charms.

Bins Be Clean speeds past Truly Nolen

ANNA MARIA – Without both coaches, the 8- to 10-year-olds on the Bins Be Clean and Truly Nolen teams came out ready to play as Will Schenerlein and Frank Agnelli led the players for two halves of flag football.

The game started and ended with bursts of speed from Bins Be Clean’s Guy Daizell down the sidelines in double handoff plays behind the line of scrimmage. Daizell’s first get of the football on the first snap of the game was called back due to a screening penalty by Connor Samblis, but the six points were quickly put on the scoreboard on a repeat of the first play.

Daizell’s speed took him all the way down the field for the first touchdown of the game. Bins Be Clean could not get the point after against a strong Truly Nolen defensive effort in the end zone leaving the score 6-0.

After six snaps and a first down reception by Finnegan Bosner, Truly Nolen gave the ball back to Bins Be Clean without scoring.

A bad snap, a dropped pass and a short run by Bins Be Clean end its scoring chance in the series. Truly Nolen went back on offense hoping to gain momentum. Quinton O’Connor took the handoff and ran for a first down.

Quarterback Mason Agnelli’s next pass was intercepted by TJ Eckert. Eckert ran the ball past midfield after spinning past defenders.

Quarterback Mikey Bowes solidly moved his team down with a pass to Torianne Hurst gaining an additional 10 yards before being stopped with a flag pull. Third and goal pass was smartly batted down by Langdon Bell to prevent the score and give the ball back to Truly Nolen.

Playing with two minutes left on the scoreboard, short passes by Truly Nolen moved the team down the field gaining a first down with a pass by O’Connor and reception by M. Agnelli.

Seconds quickly ticked off the game clock; Truly Nolen felt the pressure to score before halftime. O’Connor’s pass rocketed past traffic in and out of the hands of Bins Be Clean’s Eckert for the near interception.

Less than 20 seconds were left for either team to put points on the board. A high pass and false start for Truly Nolen gave the possession back to Bins Be Clean right before the end of the first half of the game.

After nearly dropping the football, Bins Be Clean made a great recovery getting the football to Daizell, who soared down the field for his second touchdown of the game advancing the score to 12-0.

The next 20 minutes of the game started with Truly Nolen on offense. Three snaps of the ball by both teams lead to Truly Nolen’s next try with the football.

Landon Snyder made a big run only to be stopped by Harrison Schenerlein. O’Connor got the ball to Snyder on the second snap for the first down.

In scoring position, the Bins Be Clean defense stepped it up only giving Agnelli three yards on the next play. O’Connor hit Agnelli through two defenders in the end zone for the team’s first and only touchdown of the game.

Leading by six points, Bins Be Clean returned to the field, quickly moving the football down the gridiron.

On the first snap, Samblis caught the ball for the first down. With nine minutes remaining in the game, Eckert made a fantastic run only to be stopped due to a flag guarding call at the end of the play.

Eckert gained redemption for the penalty with a scoring run taking the score to 18-6.

Despite an interception by Julian Lazzara to prevent the point after, and effective play by Cale Rudacille and Jayden Sparks, Truly Nolen just could not get back into the end zone before the end of 40 minutes of football.

Truly Nolen’s loss leaves only two undefeated teams in the community center league. Three teams continue to seek their first wins. Moving into the back half of the season, the teams gelling on and off the field as the playoffs quickly approach.

Any of the 15 teams can be named champions in February.

Truly Nolen champs

Truly Nolen closes as season champs

After delays due to weather and school performance conflicts, the championship game in the eight-to 10-year-old youth flag football league was finally played on Monday, March 27. Struggling to make it happen on the gridiron, Team Lancaster Design Group lost in the final game of the season against Team Truly Nolen.

Finishing the season with successes and growth, both team coaches proudly stood with their teams as the players recited The Center’s “Youth Sports Core Promises.” Coach Gary Harlan guided Team Lancaster Design Group through 40 minutes of regulation play, encouraging them through each snap of the football.

Coach Rick Hurst showed sportsmanship as his team had a seemingly easy time of it on the field. With powerhouses Dante Tillelli and Aiden Templeton on the bench for most of the last minutes of the game, Hurst made sure all of his players had playing time in the game of the season.

With Finley Duncan behind the center as the quarterback for most of the game, Truly Nolen showed their diversity on the field. Duncan’s first receiver was Tori Hurst, the coach’s daughter. An unfortunate miscalculation landed the football in the hands of Payton Harlan, giving him an interception near the opponent’s half of the field.

Lancaster Design Group started their offensive possession in the pass only zone of the field with quarterback Andrew Hyman ready to move the football. In three plays, Hyman lead the team toward the end zone with a catch by Kieran Cloutier, Caleb Kinkle and a final catch of the ball just outside of the end zone by Layla Yavalar.

Ending their hold on the ball without a score, Truly Nolen showed skill and energy on the field with a nice run after the short catch by Tillelli, stopped only by the flag pull of Cloutier.  Jackson Kruse took over the helm for a play with a nice reception by Templeton for the first score of the championship game. Unable to execute the point after, the score remained at 6-0.

The first snap of the next series for Lancaster Design found Kinkle the go to guy, running the ball to near midfield. After pass attempts, Hyman found Ava Harlan who carried the ball to within three yards from the first down. Templeton showed his defensive moves by batting down Hyman’s pass on third down.

Taking over the ball on downs, Truly Nolen made one play work for them. With the ball in hand Tillelli went the distance with Hyman chasing him into the end zone, adding six more points to the scoreboard. The strong Lancaster Design defense once again stopped the point after attempt.

Hyman attempted a bait and hook play using Yavalar as the bait, hoping to draw the defenders to her, but Tillelli did an excellent job reading the play and quickly pulled Hyman’s flag ending the play.

Regrouping the huddle, Hyman decided to go to P. Harlan, one of his consistent play makers.  Harlan took the ball behind the line of scrimmage giving him the option to run or pass.  Keeping the ball, he took his team seven yards short of the first down line with the flag pull by Duncan.

One minute was left in the first half of the game as Harlan again ran the ball, gaining a much-needed first down. Coach Harlan called the first of two timeouts in the half.

Running the ball, Harlan gained short yardage. As the clock ran down, Kinkle got the call as his team faked the double reverse. Unable to get out-of-bounds to stop the game clock, seconds ticked off until finally the second and final timeout was called with only six seconds left on the clock.  A Hail Mary pass was thrown with fingers crossed, but no catch to end the first half of play.

With only 20 minutes left in the game before naming a champion, Team Lancaster Design Group started with the football in hand. Hyman looking for the open man hit A. Harlan in the forehead. The ball bounced off her with a thud, as she laughed it off right into the huddle.

Showing they are still kids who play at The Center to have fun, sidelined teammates were witnessed playing with water bottles, spraying each other for amusement. Others were cheering and chanting, rooting on their teams with enthusiasm.

Harlan took the ball to the 23-yard line with Templeton finally making the stop. On third down, with the fake handoff, Hyman’s throw went off the hands of P. Harlan for the incomplete pass, giving Truly Nolen their first offensive possession of the second half.

Always showing field presence and calm, Duncan threw an accurate pass to Alex Cox who took the football with the run after the catch for Truly Nolen, but was called for flag guarding, putting the ball back on the five-yard line. On second down, Tillelli caught the lateral pass behind the line of scrimmage. After a quick delay, Tillelli eluded the flag pull of Yavalar at the sideline managing to stay in bounds.

Tillelli’s natural athletic ability shined all season and in the championship game as he raced the defense down the field to score the third touchdown of the game. Truly Nolen’s inability to get the ball into the end zone on the extra point attempts kept the score at 18-0.

Team Lancaster Design took over the ball hoping to put something together with more than 10 minutes left on the game clock. On second down, P. Harlan took the snap only to be immediately stopped by the quick play by Tillelli.

Again with the snap to P. Harlan on third down, the ball was handed off to Hyman who ran the ball for good yardage as he was being pursued by Templeton to make the stop before the first down mark on the field.

Mixing it up on the field, Truly Nolen looked to Hurst as their designated receiver.  With a catch and rushing yards, A. Harlan and Cloutier made critical stops for the Lancaster Design squad.

With Tillelli on the bench, as Truly Nolen went on defense, Kinkle was the intended receiver down field. Kinkle could not hold on to the Hyman pass, taking it to second down.

Harlan took the snap for the next two downs hoping generate momentum on the field for his team. Unfortunately, the first pass to Hyman was short and third down play did not get them the yardage needed, giving the ball back to Truly Nolen with five minutes left to play.

Templeton took the ball for a five-yard gain with a Cloutier flag pull. P. Harlan made the next defensive stop for Lancaster Design, stopping Templeton again. With two minutes posted on the clock,

Bringing the championship game to an end, Kruse threw the ball to Templeton for a first down, with Kyle Samuels and Tristan Duncan combined their efforts on offense with three nice catches and runs nearly getting their team another score before time ran off the game clock with the final score of 18-0 and Team Truly Nolen as the victors.
