Solid Rock, Progressive start off summer hot

ANNA MARIA – Youth indoor soccer on the first night of summer brought the heat on The Center’s indoor pitch.

Thanks to the hot leg of Progressive Cabinetry’s Ethan Angel and teammates Barret Raina and Alonso Valle, the team handily defeated Moss Builder. Raina and Valle each had a single goal in the game, contributing to the 5-0 final score.

Progressive’s win puts them at the top of the rankings as the only undefeated team in the U13 league.

The U9 league leader, Solid Rock Construction, also goes into week three of indoor action with a 2-0 record.

Solid Rock shut out their opponent Ugly Grouper last Tuesday night in U9 play, putting in seven goals in the game.

Matthew Darak scored a solo goal and had two assists. Darak’s sister, Mckenna, had a hat trick, adding three goals to the score. Roadman brothers Isaac and Eli contributed to Solid Rock’s 7-0 win with three total goals. E. Roadman made two shots and Isaac added to his stats with an assist.

The two undefeated teams match up against worthy opponents in week three.

Solid Rock plays Bridgetender Inn and Progressive Cabinetry goes up against Shady Lady.

Bridgetender Inn narrowly lost to team Blalock Walters last week with the final score 5-4. Shady Lady lost their game against Freckled Fin with the score 7-5.

In the final game of the night last Tuesday, Shady Lady’s scoring came from Ava Mason with two goals and Alex Monserrate with a hat trick. Making the teamwork happen, Jesse Zaccagnino is recorded to have an assist for Shady Lady in the close game.

For the win, Freckled Fin’s Chandler McRae heated up the field with four of his shots making it past the Shady Lady defense. Tucker McRae had a goal of his own for Freckled Fin. Teammate David Zupa scored two goals in the last game of week two play.

The U9 match-up of Blalock Walters against Bridgetender Inn had powerful shooting and dominating defending on both sides of the soccer ball.

Olivia Wyatt scored three goals for Blalock Walters, while Campbell Collins and Paul ten Haaf each had single scoring strikes for the Bridgetender Inn team.

Wyatt’s scoring was nearly matched by teammate Gavin Angel with two goals. Matching in goals, Bridgetender Inn’s Colton Cook also put two into the indoor soccer net.

The four games of week three start Tuesday, June 28 at 6 p.m., marking the start of the second half of play in week four.

Youth beat the heat with indoor soccer

Youth beat the heat with indoor soccer

ANNA MARIA – With the weather heating up going into the summer, the youth indoor soccer action is heating up the hardcourt at the Island’s community center.

Island area kids will not be playing traditional center indoor soccer this season. Instead, the young ballers will play a modified version of micro soccer intended to give the players more opportunities for touches on the ball in the fast-paced sport.

Unlike the original micro soccer, The Center’s league will continue to bang the boards with the soccer ball, a key skill in indoor soccer, elevating the fan excitement.

Testing out a new league configuration, two youth indoor soccer leagues will play this summer in recreational competition: U9 and U13. In general, the U9 league will include players 9 and younger, while the U13 league will roster youth between 10 and 13 years of age.

Despite the league name changes, The Center’s goal with the recreational youth sports leagues remains to help ensure all children are playing in the league that best fits their age and level of play.

In the first official game of the season, Solid Rock Construction beat Blalock Walters 5-1 in the new U9 league. Playing seven-minute quarters in three-on-three action, Solid Rock put three points on the scoreboard thanks to the offensive skills of Tess Bolognone, Mckenna Darak and Aidan Guess.

Each of their single goals contributed to the team’s first win of the season. The team effort was fortified by two goals by Solid Rock Construction’s Matthew Darak, who also had two assists in the game.

On the other side of the ball, Parker Svoboda, for Blalock Walters, scored the team’s only goal in the season opener. Teammate Gavin Angel precisely fed the soccer ball to Svoboda, making the goal possible.

With a strong lineup, Angel and Svoboda are joined by Olive Bannick, Evita Moyer, Olivia Wyatt, Brendan Gerrish, Camden Rudacille and Owen Purcell. The season is early and Blalock Walters knows the win is in reach.

The Solid Rock Construction team goes into week two with a 1-0-0 record. Turner Worth, Isaac Roadman, Eli Roadman and Obie Roadman round out the squad with five more regular season games to play.

Adding a twist to the game, both leagues will be playing without goalies this season, making overall defensive play critical.

In the second U9 game, Bridgetender Inn lost to Ugly Grouper 6-3. Landon Leach and Beau Sanson each had a hat trick for Ugly Grouper.

Bridgetender Inn’s Paul ten Haaf was high scorer, making two goals to keep his team in the game. Madeline Kimmons added a goal to the scoreboard as her team played hard until the final game whistle.

The final two games played last Tuesday night brought U13 teams to the indoor pitch. Moss Builders lost their first game of the season against Shady Lady by one goal.

The single goals by Mason Moss and Elisabeth ten Haaf just were not enough against the three goals by Shady Lady’s Jack Zaccagnino, Jesse Zaccagnino and Alex Monserrate.

High-scoring action proved to be just the way to end a night of indoor soccer at The Center. Scoring 8 points, team Progressive Cabinetry outscored team Freckled Fin for the victory.

With five goals, Barrett Raina started week one on the top of the leaderboard for points scored. Raina’s teammates Walker and Jason Wyatt each had solo goals, as well as Alonso Valle, to keep the point spread comfortable for the Progressive Cabinetry squad.

Showing they will be contenders this season, Freckled Fin scored four goals in the game. David Zupa got past the Progressive defense for two goals. The McRaes, Chandler and Tucker, each tucked a shot in for two additional Progressive Cabinetry points.

The road to the playoffs is promising for all of the teams playing indoor soccer at The Center this summer. The U9 finals are scheduled for Tuesday, July 26 at 6 p.m., while the U13 championship game schedule has yet to be determined.

Moss, Gitt season champions

Moss, Gitt season champions

ANNA MARIA – The final whistle blew Thursday night, marking the end of another action-packed soccer season at The Center. Youth champions, The Gitt Team and Moss Builders, were named earlier in the week. Team Moss Builders also eked out a 7-6 win to earn the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup over the Salty Printing squad in a high-stakes shootout.

The Gitt Team’s teamwork, with standout play by striker Callin Westfall, with a hat trick, and critical stops by the league’s Goalie of the Year, Kason Davis, pushed them toward a 3-2 victory in the big game.

Their opponent, Flip Flop Candy Shop, worked the field without Preston LaPensee, one of the league’s MVPs for the season. Luca Rosenkrans scored the only goal for his team. An own goal by The Gitt Team put a point on the scoreboard for the Flip Flop team.

Keilee Mulcahy, goalie for team Flip Flop Candy Shop, helped to hold the score to a one-point game with six important saves.

Despite the work of the entire Flip Flop team all season, the win was just not in the cards.

The Gitt Team finished the season not only with the championship and goalie accolades, but the team’s Tess Bolognone was awarded the league’s other MVP honors.

Solid Rock Construction’s Luke Willing was named the league’s Most Improved Player for the season. Defensive honors went to Aidan Guess for Tidy MD. Camden Rudacille took home the Sportsmanship award for the 8- to 10-year-old league.

In the 11- to 14-year-old league, Moss Builders’ Addie Guess was Rudacille’s counterpart, winning the Sportsmanship award. Guess and her teammates fought hard against team Shady Lady in the final game of the season.

With everything on the line, Jack Mattick worked the field and Shady Lady defense, scoring all four goals for the Moss Builders team.

In goal for Moss, Charlie Serra made five important stops, as Maddox Culhane and Jayden Sparks made him work the duration of the game. Culhane and Sparks each had solo goals in the game.

Protecting his team’s goal, Jack Zaccagnino also had five saves, helping to keep the championship within reach. Jack’s brother, Jesse, was voted Goalie of the Year for the league.

Despite the team effort by Shady Lady, without key player Victor Albrecht, the Moss Builders squad’s earned the championship to close out the youth soccer season.

The league finished with top honors to two HSH and two Miz & Hiz Biz players. HSH’s Ava Gitt was named the Most Improved Player and Konnor Oelfke, playing for Miz & Hiz Biz, won the Defensive MVP award.

League Offensive MVP distinctions were earned by Miz & Hiz Biz’s Cecelia Kroth and HSH’s Frankie Coleman.

Thursday’s night action for the adult co-ed soccer league included both semifinal action and the big game. After eliminating Sato Real Estate and Gulfview Windows & Doors, respectively, teams Moss Builders and Salty Printing went to work on the pitch.

Starting the season winless until the last weeks, Salty Printing came into the playoffs with nothing to lose and everything to prove.

Team Moss Builders, having won the championship before, played to win.

Both sides of midfield fought hard for two full halves of regulation play, finishing with no points on the scoreboard.

With five additional minutes on the clock, overtime play commenced and ended once again with a scoreless game. The stalemate took the game to a shootout, with the spectators cheering and excitement in the air.

Finishing field play with 11 saves in the game, Salty Printing’s Tuna McCracken took the line for the first penalty kick by Olaf Krause. Krause’s strike drifted to the left of the post.

Ryan Moss was on the line for Moss Builders, saving 12 shots during timed play. Salty Printing’s Kevin Roman made the first shot, followed by another by Luca Vecchio after Hakan Toka missed for his team.

Greg Moss finally eluded McCracken, scoring Moss Builders’ first goal in the game.

Alternating back and forth, Tyler Brewer and Chris Culhane made the next goals for Salty Printing, while Eduardo Filipe and R. Moss scored for Moss Builders.

With everything tied up again and two consecutive missed shots for both teams, the line ups came back around with Roman and G. Moss each making a shot.

Vecchio and Filipe hit their next shots, making the last shot by each team critical.

After a full round of penalty shots and the score six all, Moss Builders’ Gerardo Urbiola’s shot went past McCracken after going off his fingertips.

Brewer placed the soccer ball on the line for Salty Printing, with the pressure of knowing that his shot would either tie or lose the game for his team. The adrenaline of the moment sent the ball sailing over the fence, ending the championship game with a score of 7-6.

Tidy MD advances to semifinals

ANNA MARIA – Team Tidy MD and team Solid Rock Construction took to the 8- to 10-year-old league field last Tuesday night to determine which squad moved on to the semifinal game against The Gitt Team.

After regulation play, six shooters from each team took to the line, one by one, hoping to get one by the opponent’s goalkeeper with each team’s future in jeopardy.

Ending in a 0-0 tie, the game provided nail-biting excitement for players, friends and family.

Solid Rock Construction keeper Isaac Roadman did his best against the firepower of the Tidy MD strikers. Save for save, Braelyn Curtis protected the Tidy MD goal, missing only two of the six shots taken against her.

Curtis’ saves and the perfect placement of penalty kicks by Owen Purcell, Jasmine Sparks, Kirra Quinby and Aiden Guess gave Tidy MD the green light to move forward into the next round of playoff games.

Solid Rock’s players took to the line with determination. Curtis could not stop the shots of David Zupa, Mckenna Darak and Turner Worth. The team’s efforts fell short by one goal, ending Solid Rock’s season.

In addition to the Tidy MD-The Gitt Team match-up, team Flip Flop Shop & Candy Stop faces team Beach Bums. Only two teams will play in the 8- to 10-year-old league championship game.

Four teams remain in the 11- to 14-year-old league. Moss Builders faced HSH this week, while Shady Lady played Miz & Hiz Biz in semifinal action.

The comeback adult soccer team, Salty Printing, lit up the field against Servis First Bank last Thursday night, winning by three goals.

Sato Real Estate secured its place in the semifinals by defeating Shady Lady, 7-4. Team Moss Builders continues go undefeated with a 9-3 win against The Gitt Team.

Gulfview Windows & Doors knocks on the door of the championship game with a big five-point win against Progressive Cabinetry.

Can Salty Printing’s winning streak take them to the finals? Facing Moss Builders will be the ultimate test for the Salty team.

Despite the rocky start to the season, team Sato Real Estate cannot be underestimated.

Gulfview needs the win against Sato Real Estate to find their place on the pitch Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Championship Cup game.

Team Salty Printing wins

ANNA MARIA – After their first win of the season last week, Salty Printing walked onto The Center field Thursday night with an air of confidence ready to take on their opponent, team Shady Lady. Despite the fact that their last win was by forfeit, the W was just enough to give the team what they needed to play and earn the 5-2 victory.

Shady Lady came into the game without the striking leg of Eric Pullen and others, leaving Ryan Hogan, Amy Ivin, Adam Mott, Jake Parsons, JD Webb and Nate Welch on the field to play with an empty bench.

The Salty Printing win came with hard work, hustle on the field, strong play, dynamic goalkeeping and a sprinkle of luck. Shady Lady’s offense struck hard and struck often, keeping Tuna McCracken busy in goal for Salty.

McCracken ended the game with 16 recorded saves, with cat-like reflexes making stops left and right. Fortunate for team Salty Printing, several of the Shady Lady shots hit the post or were just slightly off the mark.

The Shady Lady squad did not stop playing hard, fighting for every position and every 50-50 ball. Starting the game in goal, Adam Mott made six important stops for Shady Lady.

Taking his place in goal, teammate Jake Parsons had four saves before the final whistle. With Parsons in goal, Mott came onto the field ready to score. Using his stature and skill, Mott made quick work of his time on the field, scoring one of the two goals for his team.

Nate Welch scored the first point for Shady Lady in the first half of play. Welch’s early goal gave the talented team a spark they needed to stay in the game for a while.

Playing down, as Jaclyn Schlossberg joined the Salty Printing team, Shady Lady just could not stop the scoring efforts of Tyler Brewer and Kevin Roman.

With three goals and an assist, Roman led Salty Printing in scoring. Brewer had two solid goals of his own in the team’s victory. Teammate Nick Cavalluzzi made his mark in the record books with an assist.

As a team, Salty Printing pulled themselves out of the bottom of the league rankings with the win, putting them in seventh place going into the quarter-final round of the playoffs. The team plays second seed Servis First Bank in the 8 p.m. game on Thursday night.

The first game of the playoffs starts with #4 ranked Sato Real Estate facing Shady Lady. Gulfview Windows & Doors meets Progressive Cabinetry in the last game of the night, as the third and sixth seeded teams, respectively.

Undefeated team Moss Builders earned the prime playing time, challenging last place The Gitt Team in the 7 p.m. game at The Center.

Can Moss Builders make their way to the championship game as one of only a few undefeated teams to go all the way? Their worthy opponents will do their best to make their mark in the playoffs, seeking the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup.

ANNA MARIA – On the small soccer pitches, the 5- to 7-year-old players matched up in their third week of play. Progressive Cabinetry played team Mac Parkman Foundation, while Surfing Coconuts AMI matched up on the field with team Adrian Griffin Interiors.

For many of the players in this league, the end of this season leads to a future in the youngest competitive recreational league at the community center, the 8- to 10-year-old league.

After two weeks of youth recreational soccer at The Center of Anna Maria Island, two teams are on top with 2-0-0 records. The Gitt Team tops the charts in the younger age group of mostly elementary school-aged athletes.

For the 11- to 14-year-old league, the Moss Builders team goes into week three undefeated, also with a record of 2-0-0. The season is still young with four more games in the regular season for both leagues.

Last week’s game for The Gitt team was a close one, with the final score 1-0 against team Tidy MD. Thanks to Izabella McGraw, who scored the only goal in the game, The Gitt Team solidified its place at the top of the ranking for the week.

McGraw’s teammate, Karson Davis, had four goals in the victory against Tidy MD. Tess Bolognone is credited with the assist, making the McGraw goal possible.

On the other side of the field, Aidan Guess and Owen Purcell each had a single save for Tidy MD, keeping their team in the battle for the entire game.

In the older league, the Shady Lady squad kept it close against team Moss Builders. Goals by Savanna Coba, Jesse Zaccagnino and Victor Albrecht made the Moss Builders defense work. Coba scored two points against Moss Builders’ goalie, Charlie Serra.

Serra finished the game with two saves, while his counterpart on the Shady Lady team, Albrecht, had three stops. The power leg of Jack Mattick put four points on the scoreboard, with additional goals by Mason Moss and Gabriella Gilbert.

With plenty of games left to play, the top seed in both youth soccer leagues is still up for grabs.

Three teams in the youth soccer program at The Center seek their first win of the season: Beach Bums, Tidy MD and Miz & Hiz Biz. It is anyone’s season to win.

Let the games begin: Another year of action at The Center

Youth sports and adult co-ed flag football and soccer started another set of seasons last week at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Week one of action started for the grown-up kids on Wednesday night, Jan. 13, with adult soccer.

This season’s team rosters witnessed a mixing up of standard team lineups. On paper, the Jiffy Lube squad, with the strong games of the Anderson brothers, Sean Flynn’s versatile play and speed on the field, Eric Pullen’s scoring power, Robb Marshall’s superb stopping ability, Tim Holly’s youth and tenacity, and Lyn Clarke’s wisdom and experience, could be the team to beat.

Against Slim’s Place, both teams showed this could be anyone’s season, with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.

With a new sponsor to the league, now veteran Zach Reda, along with past teammates Cody Wright, Clancy Vaughn and Cole Peterson, took the field with other league veterans to get their Allied team a solid win over the strong Blalock Walters team. Despite goals by Matt Staggs and Chris Scott, Allied scored seven goals in the game and won 7-2.

Reda had a hat trick, leading his team in scoring and tied with Chris Klotz in the league with one game completed.

Klotz’s team, Burton Brick and Tile, won 6-3 against Servis First Bank in the third game of the night. In the loss, Kevin Roman scored two goals and Ben Sato had nine saves.

Also with two goals, Burton Bricks’ Zach Leib started the season strong once again.

In the final soccer game of the night, Sato Real Estate put a win in the record books to start the season. Their victory came against The Gitt Team. Finishing with the score at 4-2, Josh Sato, Amy Ivin, Hakan Toka, and Race Arande each had a goal in the game.

Robert Fellowes eluded the Sato Real Estate goalkeeper twice for his team’s two points.

The next night, in flag football action, the adults took to the Island gridiron for four exciting games to start the season.

In the first game, youth sports standout Jackson Hayes was credited with a touchdown pass for Sandbar in 40-27 first-game victory, as well as single point conversion reception. Matteo Ferris threw the other three touchdown passes and had an interception in the game.

Sandbar’s Tyler Brewer had two catches, one for the point after a touchdown.

Salty Printing’s Shaughnessy family trio, Mike, Bri and Tim, took the field against former teammate Karri Stephens for the first time in many seasons.

Team captain, Tim Shaughnessy had two passing touchdowns in addition to a scoring pass by Danny Murphy. Murphy and T. Shaughnessy also had rushing touchdowns in the loss.

The two interceptions, caught by Stephens and Ferris may have been the deciding factor in the match-up.

In a closer scoring game, Beach Bums won by three points, 21-18, against Ryan Moss and Moss Builders. Quarterback Matt Briley hit Rueben Young twice for touchdowns, with a single touchdown throw to Anthony Mannino for the win.

In addition to the six points, Mannino had an interception against the Moss Builder’s squad.

Quarterback Ryan Moss hit friend Jordan Demers twice, cousin Greg Moss thrice, Cole Carter four times, and Dina DeJesus for five catches, including two for touchdowns.

Moss had a rushing score of his own, while his cousin caught Briley for two defensive sacks. Despite Demers’ two interceptions, Moss Builders could not pull off the win.

Ugly Grouper scored 32 points against team Mi-Box lead by Dominick Otteni, who scored 19 in the first game of the season. Each team finished the game with a single interception by the team captain.

Captain Brandon Kull, is also noted with three touchdown throws and one scoring catch for his Ugly Grouper team.

Chad Woods leads the league with nine receptions for his Mi-Box team, including one for a score. Woods was supported by his fellow scoring teammates Otteni and Dylan Doyle.

In the win, each of the Ugly Grouper players had a catch in the game. Octavious Cole had the most for his team with five grabs, followed by Melissa Acevedo with four catches, and Mark Anthony and Cory Banks each with three.

Cam Winston and Jaret Rojas had single nabs in their team’s first win of the season.

To end the night, Solid Rock Construction and Slim’s Place played a nail biter that ended in a tie after regulation time.

Slim’s Place took the win in overtime, with quarterback JB Shuck throwing a solid four scoring receptions to Cruz Rodriguez, Tim Holly and Jacob Robertson. Holly had an additional five points in the game for Slim’s Place.

Connor Haughey served as the quarterback for Solid Rock Construction, with three passing touchdowns to team captain Jon Moss.

In addition to Jesse Skipper’s and Zack Long’s extra points after the touchdowns, Haughey had a Pick Six taking the Solid Rock team to overtime.

Slim’s Place overtime win puts them in a four-way tie for first place with Ugly Grouper, Beach Bums and Sandbar going into week two.

ANNA MARIA – The youth flag football winter season came to a close March 10 with the three championship games played at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Of the six teams that played, only three would be named the victors.

In the eight-to 10-year old league, HSH Designs came out on top with a 39-16 victory over Cool Today.

Cool Today’s Peyton Hovda had two rushing touchdowns in the game and was named the league’s male MVP for the season. Hovda also completed a two-point conversion reception for his team.

The league’s female MVP, HSH’s Savanna Coba, caught two passes, one for six points.

In addition to being named Most Improved Player, Noah Rigney made a catching touchdown, along for an extra point, for HSH Designs.

Cale Rudacille was voted the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award for the season.

Bailey Cain scored two points for Cool Today with a two-point play. Teammate Chad Nunez made two catches in the game.

Earning the win, Connor Samblis made a rushing touchdown for HSH Designs. Charlie Neri, in the quarterback position, recorded three passing throws.

Additional league awards went to Matthew Hennesey as the Most Improved Player and Jack Mattick receiving the Sportsmanship award.

In perhaps the most anticipated youth flag football game of the season, Hashmark Sports took the field against MuniPlan.

Playing without their second-round draft choice, Blake Balais, the league’s Quarterback of the Year Tuna McCracken was missing a key target. Despite the deficit, MuniPlan put 19 points on the scoreboard with rushing touchdowns by McCracken.

MuniPlan’s offensive action was spread across the roster with two catches by Tyler Brewer, Morgan Horesh and David Daigle. McCracken caught the football for a single statistic in the game.

In their big win, Hashmark Sports’ Ian Godefry, voted league Most Improved Player, made threw for three touchdowns. Team MVP in the game could be given to Shawn Balvin with five total catches, three for touchdowns. Balvin scored an extra point to add to his game statistics.

Cole Carter was bestowed the Sportsmanship award in the award ceremony that followed the final game to end another youth flag football season.

In last Monday night’s adult volleyball matches, Solid Rock Construction retained their undefeated record by beating Sandbar and Ugly Grouper.

Ugly Grouper ended the week with a 0-4 record. Ugly Grouper and Bins Be Clean sit in the middle of the pack.

Youth flag football lit up the fields Tuesday night. Playing their seventh and final week of the regular season, Moss Builders came out on top with one defeat going into the playoffs in the eight-to 10-year old league.

HSH Designs and Diamond Turf are the second and third seed, respectively, with 4-2 records.

Diamond Turf went up against Beach Bums and finished with the win.

In the win, quarterback Carson Clover had three throwing touchdowns. Clover found Maddox Culhane and Mason Moss as the receivers.

Culhane had one rushing touchdown to be matched by a running score by Clover.

Hayden Eurice was at the top of his game for Beach Bums, finishing the game with two catches for points and a running touchdown.

Dennis Gallagher worked behind the snap as the quarterback for the Beach Bums squad. Gallagher put two passing touchdowns in the statistics.

Beach Bums and Cool Today both won three of their six match-ups, while Rays Ramblings earned two victories in the regular season.

In the 11-to 13-year old flag football league, Progressive Cabinetry and Solid Rock Construction sit one and two on the leader board. Slim’s Place is in third place with three wins and four losses. Ugly Grouper look for their first win in the season.

With a late bye week, MuniPlan currently is at the top of the 14-to 17-year old league with a 5-1 record. Hashmark Sports plays this week and could even up the score with MuniPlan.

Killer Bait is in third with Ugly Grouper holding on to fourth with a single win. Gulf Drive Café is still fighting for win number one.

Week two of the adult indoor soccer league finished with Pool America and Duncan Real Estate on top with two wins. Sato Real Estate and Slim’s Place both have 1-1 records.

Going into week three, Ross Built Construction and Gulfview Café take the field playing for their teams’ first victory.

The adult flag football league has veteran wisdom going for them with Moss Builders undefeated at the season’s midpoint.

The youthful team sponsored by Lancaster Design is in second with a single loss. Ugly Grouper has a 0-4 record and Capt. Sky Cruises is in seventh with a win and three losses.

Beach Bums, Firkins Automotive, Rays Ramblings and Slim’s Place all go into week five winning two of the four games played to round out the week of Island sports.

Two adult sports leagues started up the season last week at The Center of Anna Maria Island.

Adult volleyball arrived on the hardcourt with Solid Rock Construction out to defend the championship title. At the end of the night, the family team came out on top, winning two matches.

The first games of the adult indoor soccer season heated up the gym for its second season since the sports comeback last year.

The night included lots of shooting and amazing saves. Pool America came out on top in the match-up against Sato Real Estate, finishing the game with the score at 8-7.

With Josh Sato playing as the primary goalie and 22 saves, backup goalie Sean Flynn logged six saves and three goals in the Sato Real Estate loss on week one.

Sato’s sister-in-law, Lexi, along with Oliver Petereit had single goals in the game. Ben Sato, Josh’s brother, put two points on the scoreboard to keep the game close.

Team Pool America got its first win with Chris Klotz in the goal with 14 saves. Omar Polar and Andrew Sullivan both had multiple saves as relief to Klotz.

Sullivan also hit three soccer balls into the net, matching teammate Olaf Krause.

Chris Scott got his two shots past the Sato Real Estate defense and goalie to secure the win.

In the second indoor game of the season, Slim’s Place topped Gulfview Windows, with a final score of 8-7.

Gulfview’s Brandin Holcomb and Ryan Moss had 14 and 16 saves, respectively, in the game. Keith Mahoney, Jessica Williams and John Haggerty all put points on the scoreboard for their team.

Putting a win in the record books, Diego Felipe, for Slim’s Place, had 15 saves. Steve Oelfke earned eight saves for his team.

The Slim’s Place scoring came from Felipe, Kevin Roman and Mark Long, each with two goals. Felipe’s brother, Brayan, and Oelfke each had a solo goal in the nail-biting game.

Ross Built Construction’s loss to Duncan Real Estate was in the hands of former Ross Built goalie Robb Marshall.

Marshall’s 22 recorded saves along with Zach Lieb’s six goals gave Duncan Real Estate its victory. Duncan’s win came with the help of scoring by Jenna Steininger and Damir Glavin, with two goals each and Cole Peterson’s single.

Joey Hutchison’s two goals and six saves in the game sparked and solidified the win.

Ross Built Construction’s squad made Duncan work for the game. In the goal, Max Gazzo and Nate Talucci shut down 29 shots.

Teammates Chris Circharo, Greg Ross and Ryan Hogan each struck and scored. Gazzo topped off his 18 saves with two goals in the Ross Built team loss to end the first night of indoor competition.

Youth gridiron action starts the new year at The Center

The ringing in of the new year brought in 2020 and a new season of youth flag football at The Center of Anna Maria Island.

In addition to the football clinics for the youngest ballers, the area boys and girls ranging in age between eight and 17 years old officially started another season on the gridiron last week.

Six games were played, with the winners feeling the wind under their wings with excitement and the teams that came up short learning valuable lessons with the sport. With many games left to play, some standouts became apparent.

In the eight-to 10-year old league, HSH’s Connor Samblis and Savanna Coba made huge plays for their team. Samblis with three recorded receptions, two receiving touchdowns and a pick-six to be included with his two passing touchdowns could be noted as the team MVP.

Coba had two receptions including one for a score in the game. Scoring for HSH included touchdowns by Charlie Neri and Lucas Signor.

Team Rays Ramblings worked hard on the field and held their heads up high despite the loss against HSH with two touchdown passes by Jack McCarthy. Reef Marin was credited with receiving touchdowns in the game, along with six catches by Joseph Bramurov.

In Moss Builders’ win against Beach Bums, Gavin Lyssy had two passing touchdowns and a scoring catch of his own. Ewen Cloutier caught the football for three touchdowns and Cyrus Ryan made a two-point conversion reception.

Despite the loss, Beach Bums’ Hayden Eurice had four catches including one putting six points on the scoreboard for his team.

The only 11-13 age group game last week was between Ugly Grouper and Solid Rock Construction. Coming out on top, Solid Rock’s Evan Talucci caught a touchdown pass to help his team with the win.

On the other side of the field, Frankie Coleman scored, while teammate Aiden Templeton had an interception and took it to the end zone for Ugly Grouper.

The Hashmark Sports defense took advantage of a rocky passing game by Ugly Grouper in the 11-14 flag league, with four interceptions for touchdowns. Shawn Balvin, for Hashmark Sports, had a receiving touchdown and a pick-six.

Teammate Nate Costello snagged the reception on defense for two scoring interceptions and an offensive touchdown reception as well. Alex McCauley grabbed the fourth interception taking it down the field for a score for his team. Chance Hayward scored 12 points for Hashmark in the 54-point win with Ian Godefry noted as the quarterback with three touchdown throws.

Defensively Ugly Grouper’s Jonah Durst and Ethan Brown both had interceptions. Kolby Petrin caught five passes with the remaining members of the roster each having at least one catch in the game.

In the final game of the night, MuniPlan took the win spreading the catches among the team from Tuna McCracken, Tyler Brewer and Fisher Dahlman. Brewer also had six catches in the game with one for a touchdown, along with four for Morgan Horesh including an extra point.

Teammate David Daigle was credited with two touchdown catches in the win against Killer Bait.

Killer Bait’s sole touchdown came from a Ben Barreda throw to Jackson Hayes. Hayes had five catches in the game, with four in the books for Silas Banyas.

Hutchinson and Ivin top charts going into playoffs

The final week of the regular season for the adult soccer league at The Center of Anna Maria Island played out last week with Ross Built Construction taking the win against Vintage Beach in the first game of the night last Thursday, Dec. 5.

Second-seeded Sato Real Estate dominated the pitch against Flynn Law, who was missing key players. Top female league scorer and second overall in the league at just four goals short of first, Amy Ivin, put four goals into the record books along with an assist in the game.

Ivin started the scoring early finding the net twice in the first 10 minutes of the match up giving Sato Real Estate a 2-0 lead.

With five minutes left in the first half of the game, Ivin finds Race Aranda ready to score, advancing the point deficit for Flynn Law with the score 3-0.

Flynn Law looked to be on fire and ready for a second-half come back with a quick goal by Danny Anderson, made possible by an assist by his wife Gina Anderson, against a Sato squad that did not look quick ready for action.

The scoreboard showed a 3-1 Sato Real Estate lead with 15 minutes left in the game when D. Anderson’s corner kick met the feet of Zachary Lieb for the second Flynn Law goal of the game, moving the score to 4-2.

Aranda moved down the field past Goalie of the Year Robb Marshall, for Flynn Law, with 90 saves in the regular season. Aranda found Ivin open allowing her to score her third goal of the game.

Both Ivin and team captain Josh Sato hit the net for Sato Real Estate points and Lieb scored again for the Flynn Law team.

With the score 6-3 with very little time left in the game, Conrado Gomez hit his solo goal, giving his team, Sato Real Estate, a five-point lead.

In the final seconds of the game, Nate Talucci scored the final goal of the game for Sato Real Estate to end the game with the score 8-3.

Top seed Block Walters will face Vacasa, who clinched their first win of the season against Lancaster Design Thursday night. With the loss, Lancaster Design’s season ended.

Sato Real Estate matches up against seventh seed Moss Builders and fourth seed Ross Built Construction hits the field with Flynn Law, finishing fifth in the regular season.

League high scorer and team captain Joey Hutchinson takes his Vintage Beach team into the playoffs against sixth seed Team MuniPlan.

The semifinal round of playoff games are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. with the championship game to follow on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.

Young and old play the field at The Center

From the three- to five-year-old soccer clinic to the 79-year-old Lyn Clarke, The Center has soccer for everyone. Using the little pop-up nets on the small field, the youngest players start loving the game, while the adults on the big field bring their international experiences to the league.

Youth soccer came to an end once again last week with the two championship games won by West Coast Surf Shop for the eight- to 10-year-old league and Lancaster Designs for the older kids in the 11- to 14-year-old league. Both victories came after regulation play in shootouts.

Accolades abounded for both leagues with Brylee Roberts and Luke Dellenger taking the Most Improved Player honors. The goalie of the year awards went to Alexander Teich and Travis Bates.

Protecting their ends of the pitch with impressive moves, earning them the Defensive MVP recognition were Mason Moss and Caden Quimby.

Understanding the importance of respecting the sport and the opponents winning the Sportsmanship award was Braelyn Curtis and Konnor Oelfke.

Female and Male MVP distinctions were given to Savanna Coba and Nixon Connor for the eight- to 10-year-old league, and Abbie Philpott and Thomas Philpott for the 11- to 15-year-old league.

In the adult co-ed soccer league, there is a 60-year age gap between the youngest and oldest players. Each player in the league brings their own talents and experiences to the game.

Brooke Capparelli, playing for the Blalock Walters team, helped her squad beat Ross Built Construction last Wednesday night with an assist. Capparelli, the youngest player in the league, grew up playing soccer at the Island’s community center as a youth.

On the other end of the age spectrum is Clarke, who started the season on the Vacasa team. Clarke, who will soon be 80, put his application into the Guinness World Record as the oldest active competitive soccer player.

In between, there are several players who are over the age of 50 and a growing number of players in their early- to mid-20s, including league top scorers Joey Hutchinson and Amy Ivin.

Top statistical players on the other end of the age spectrum, Damir Glavan and Greg Ross, prove why experience and smart play in the league is just as valuable as young, fast legs.

In Thursday night’s game, Glavan and Ross, playing for Ross Built Construction, had a total of five goals helping their team with the 7-1 win over Lancaster Designs.

As the play continues years down the road, it is very likely that the average age of the league will continue to get older just as new young players join the fun on the field.

This season’s youth soccer clinic at The Center of Anna Maria Island ended in a fun game of parents versus players for the six-to seven-year-old group last Tuesday night. With Tim Holly, sports program coordinator for the community center, leading the adult team, the oldest of the clinic program players laughed and had fun against their parents in the game that transitions them to the big field.

Sponsored by Bridge Tender, Holly worked with the talented group of young players for six weeks on advanced skills that would prepare them for stronger competition in the next season in the 8- to 10-year-old recreational league.

For the younger Island area kids, The Center’s Associate Director Connor Haughey utilized the old baseball infield to introduce the youngest ballers to the game and basic skills of soccer. The three- to five-year-old clinic, sponsored by Diamond Turf, took to the small pitch during the last seven weeks to learn how to dribble, pass and shoot.

Each season, more children in the area fall in love with the sport of soccer and learn some of the basics on Anna Maria Island at The Center thanks to volunteer coaches, business sponsors and the staff at the community center.

Flynn versus Flynn: Battles on The Center pitch continue

The historical relationship between team sponsor and owner-player has changed over the last few years as the interest in being a business sponsor at The Center has grown, as has the interest in playing the sports.

In the past, for example, Ryan Moss would always play on team Moss Builders. Tyler Lancaster found himself on the Lancaster Designs roster. Team Sato Real Estate has been captained by Josh Sato or one of the other Sato brothers. The Ross Built squad included Greg Ross.

But times have changed and last week Sean Flynn found himself on the opposite side of the pitch against the team bearing his name, team Flynn Law. Representing MuniPlan, Flynn and his teammates fought hard against his namesake team, ending the night with team MuniPlan’s second loss of the season.

Despite goals by Nathan Kragt, Ashley Friszman and Flynn, Flynn Law dominated the field with goals by Danny Anderson, Zachary Lieb, Chris Scott, Nate Welch and Chris Culhane. Murat Akay was credited with a hat trick in the game along with the 14 incredible saves by goalie Robb Marshall.

The loss put MuniPlan in a three-way tie for fourth place halfway through the season with Ross Built Construction and Moss Builders.

Ross Built took the win 12-5 in the last game of the night against Moss Builders. Even with Jordan DeMers’ 11 saves, Kevin Roman’s four goals in the game were just too much for the Moss team.

Chris Chicaro, Greg Ross and Damir Glavin each put up two points in the game, with singles by Connor Bystrom and John Coleman for the win.

Mark Rudacille, Ross’ goalkeeper, had nine saves in the game with another three by Max Gazzo.

On the other side of the field, Moss Builders’ Gerardo Urbiola was the high scorer with three shots hitting the net. Eliza Faillice got two of her own and team captain Keith Mahoney scored one goal.

The second game of the night pitted Vacasa against Vintage Beach. The relatively young Vintage team pulled out the win 6-4 against the veteran Vacasa crew.

Vacasa’s Stetson Mathews lead his team in scoring with three goals to be paired with the single point by Eric Pullen.

Joseph Hutchison, team captain for Vintage Beach, put a point up on the scoreboard, along with Clancy Vaughn. Cody Wright and Zach Reda each eluded Trey Horne, Vacasa’s keeper, twice.

Playing without captain and field powerhouse Josh Sato, team Sato Real Estate only scored one goal shot by Olaf Krause.

The Blalock Walters’ defense, including the goalkeeping skills of Luke Grady, kept league high scorer Amy Ivin pretty well contained, preventing her from finding the net.

In the win, Matt Staggs, Greg DeMuse and Robbie Fellowes each scored a goal for the Blalock team, which put that team in first place at the mid-season point with a record of 3-0-1.
