Sato claims adult indoor soccer championship

ANNA MARIA – To close out the winter 2024 sports season at The Center of Anna Maria Island, the adult indoor soccer players went into round two of the playoffs last Wednesday knowing that if they won, they would advance to the championship game in only a few very short minutes.

In the first game of the night, second-ranked team Pool America lost to the Sato Real Estate team 9-5. Coming into the night as the third seed, Sato Real Estate was ready to play off of the win against Slim’s Place the week prior.

Pool America had a bye in round one playoff action.

Team Bucky Construction faced the same fate in the semifinal round against ServisFirst Bank. Fourth-ranked team Servis beat team Mi-Box to earn their round two seat. Top-ranked Bucky Construction had the week to rest.

The week off for Pool America and Bucky Construction seemed to work as a disadvantage for the two top-ranked teams. ServisFirst Bank’s win matched them up against Sato Real Estate in the final indoor soccer game of the season.

Having the apparent advantage of playing the first game of the night, Sato Real Estate led the championship game going into halftime 3-2. As the game clock ticked, the fatigue of playing back-to-back games started to take its toll on team ServisFirst Bank.

Team captain Josh Sato protected his team’s goal for the duration of the match, with 14 recorded saves. Servis shared the goalkeeping duties between Scott Cooper and Robert Fellowes. Cooper finished with three stops, while Fellowes put three saves in the game stats.

The game’s 15 points came off the boots of Sato Real Estate’s Ted Hurst and Nate Welch, scoring four and three goals, respectively, as well as two goals for each of the ServisFirst Bank scorers Nate Stotler, Luca Vecchio and Fellowes.

James Noblett and Sato each added a single point for the Sato Real Estate team, contributing to the team’s solid win.

Team Sato Real Estate progressively widened its lead with the final whistle blowing to a 9-6 win for the slightly favored squad. As the indoor soccer season ends, the play on the outdoor pitch starts with spring adult co-ed and youth soccer on the Island.

Last Thursday night at Anna Maria Island’s community center, eight adult soccer teams started playoff action in the ninth season ending in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game.

The first three games of the evening advanced the number five seed Vintage Beach, seventh-ranked Moss Builders, and top-ranked Beach Bums to the semifinal games.

The fourth semifinal slot was filled by the regular season second place finishers Sato Real Estate in a battle against #6 Signature Granite.

The own goal by Sato Real Estate became the critical point, ending regular season play with the score 2-2. Signature Granite’s Katie Christenson scored the lone goal for her team before the shootout.

Going into extended play, Josh Sato and Hakan Toka had a point each already in the record book. Sato is credited with the winning kick from the penalty mark.

In the win, Steve Oelfke saved 10 shots for Sato Real Estate. Scott Bear, of Signature Granite, had an incredible game with 13 saves for his team in the final quarterfinal game of the night.

Other scorers in the night were Josh Furman and Chris Scott for Solid Rock Construction. A hat trick by Vintage Beach’s Joey Hutchinson was supported by single goals by Nick Bouchard, Sean Flynn and Clancy Vaughn.

Ross Built Construction’s Jake Ross’ goal was just not enough against the four successful shots by Danny Anderson for Moss Builders. Anderson’s teammate, Aaron Parkin, had a solo goal in the game, moving his team to the next round of the playoffs.

Matt Staggs’ point stood alone on the scoreboard for the Blalock Walters team. Their opponent, Beach Bums, solidly captured the win with the final score 5-1.

Kevin Roman finished with two goals in the game. Singles by Robert Fellowes, Amy Ivin and Andrew Sullivan showed why the Beach Bums quad is the team to beat going into the semifinal games.

Thursday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. starts with Moss Builders taking on Sato Real Estate. Vintage Beach follows against Beach Bums at 7:30 p.m.

The Hayward Cup game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m., to follow shortly after the last semifinal matchup.

Losses by Ross Built Construction, Sato Real Estate and Solid Rock Construction, along with a shutout by Beach Bums, puts all four teams on the top of the leader board with a week left in the regular season. Each team goes into week eight of play with a 4-3 record.

The first two games of the night were an offensive blowout by Signature Granite and Vintage Beach, each with 10 goals in their respective games.

Zack Lieb had the hot foot for Signature Granite with four goals. Vintage Beach’s Clancy Vaugh put up four points for her team in the 7 p.m. game against Solid Rock.

Solid Rock’s Chris Culhane and Darrin Wash each had two goals in the loss against the current fifth-seeded Vintage Beach.

In the 4-0 win against Blalock Walters, Beach Bum’s Kevin Roman scored twice, while teammates Yuri Pereira and Connor Haughey each had solo goals of their own.

Despite the four collective goals by Ross Built’s Garrett Furman, Tyler Pullen and Jake Ross, the team could not outscore the Moss Builders squad.

Brent Moss shot two successful strikes in the game with an additional score by cousin Ryan Moss for team Moss Builders.

Two goals were made by Aaron Parkin, along with a single by Danny Anderson for the Moss Builders win.

The nine goalkeepers to hit the field made 60 total saves last Thursday night. R. Moss leads the league in saves with 59.

Sato Real Estate’s Steve Oelfke has 57 saves, including the eight that he is credited with in the game against Signature Granite.

Mark Long, keeper for Solid Rock Construction, rounds out the top three with 48 total saves so far in the season. Long had nine saves last Thursday night.

With one more regular season week of play, wins for each team are critical in determining the ranking going into the first week of playoff competition.

Gulfview Windows (2-4-1) bye week

Three teams fight to be first in adult soccer

Three teams fight to be first in adult soccer

With only two weeks of regular season play left in the co-ed adult soccer schedule, three teams rise to the top, fighting for first seed. Once on top alone, Sato Real Estate holds on to one of three top positions with a 4-2 record.

Two construction company-sponsored teams, Ross Built Construction and Solid Rock Construction, join Sato in the scramble for the position in the playoffs that would match them up against the eighth seed team.

All three teams have two regular season games to play. League regulations utilize head-to-head records as a way to break a tie in the case of more than one team having the same record.

Sato Real Estate had a bye last Thursday night, while Ross Built won its game against Vintage Beach 5-3. Greg Ross and Garrett Furman scored two goals each for the Ross Built team.

Tyler Pullen also put one in the net for Ross Built, while Chris Circharo served as the protector of the goal for their team with 15 recorded saves.

Sean Flynn, Cole Peterson and Jenna Steininger each put a point on the scoreboard for Vintage Beach. Keeper duties were split between David Greene and Ben Sato in the loss.

Solid Rock Construction put the second loss in the record last Thursday night against Gulfview Windows and Doors. The win gave Gulfview their second win of the season.

Gulfview put eight goals up against Solid Rock off the feet of Keith Mahoney with a hat trick, two goals by Daniel Adan and Raul Loera, and a single by Jesse Kun. Matt Fletcher stopped 10 strikes in the game.

Chris Scott and Josh Furman were the scorers for Solid Rock, battling it out for first place. Teammate Mark Long had five saves against the Gulfview offense.

In the first two games of the night, Blalock Walters and Moss Builders tied with the score 3-3 and Beach Bums handily won against Signature Granite with the final score of 11-6.

One team ultimately will not make the playoffs, with nine teams in the league. At the end of the regular season on Aug. 27, seed nine will be eliminated, ending the team’s playoff hopes.

Brazil and Belgium undefeated: Island soccer’s unbeatable

It’s four weeks into the adult soccer season, and two teams are atop the leader’s board with three wins and no losses. Josh Sato’s Team Belgium, sponsored by Sato Real Estate, and Ryan Moss’ Team Brazil, sponsored by Moss Builders, so far this summer season cannot be beaten.

The two teams not only have 3-0 records, but the scores of their victories show they are easily the most dominant teams so far.

After seasons of struggling to put together a strong roster on the pitch, Moss may have a championship team. Sato always has shown his mastery in the draft room by picking teams that not only look good on paper, but that also perform on the field.

Team Brazil faced Team Sweden, sponsored by Bins Be Clean. Team captain Nate Welch was sidelined with a back injury and could not take the field for Bins Be Clean.

The squad representing World Cup quarterfinalist Sweden also played without key players Ricky Anderson who went in the second round of the draft and league newbie Brayan Felipe.

With no players on the bench in the heat of the 6:30 p.m. game, Bins Be Clean just could not hold its own on the Island’s pitch against a speedy and organized Moss Builders.

The stats sheets for Team Brazil clearly show the diversity of the squad. With all but one player scoring goals, Moss’ team may just be the team to beat on the way to the championship.

Team Belgium will not let Brazil maintain the top position without a fight. Sato is no stranger to the top of the heap. With a strong goalie, two former college level female soccer players and undeniable strength on the field by the remaining teammates, Sato Real Estate is likely to be one of the top teams at the end of the regular season.

At the mid-point in the season in a league in which all of the squads made the first round of the playoffs, it is still anyone’s championship. Injuries, game suspensions due to misconduct on the field, the heat of the summer games, and absences because of vacations can make the difference for any of the seven teams.

Only time will tell.

Adult soccer finishes the regular season

After a team’s first loss of the season, the phrase “everyone makes the playoffs” starts to become the catch phrase at the community center during an adult sports season. Co-ed soccer is no different.

Only three of the eight teams that started the season with high hopes of finishing at the top ended the seven game regular season with more wins than losses. Four teams finished with the exact same record of 2-4-1 going into the first week of playoffs: Sato Real Estate, Acqua Aveda, Moss Builders and Ross Built Construction. Mar/Kis Insurance tied their last game with Moss Builders ending with a 1-5-1 record.

Slim’s Place finished with a single loss that came in the last game to Mulock Flynn Law who finished in the second seed. Jiffy Lube settled into third place with a win over Sato Real Estate during the first game of the night Thursday, Nov. 9.

Team Captain Josh Sato put early points on the scoreboard for Sato Real Estate with a strong long strike against older brother Jason Sato in goal for Jiffy Lube.

Jiffy Lube started the game with Ricky Anderson back on the field after an injury early in the season. The Anderson brothers showed their skills and abilities on the field early with a quick response goal by captain Danny Anderson. Sato Real Estate’s goalie Adam Mott was drawn off and with defender Nate Talucci slightly out of reach the score was tied 1-1 after just four minutes of play.

Two minutes later Josh Sato found himself in perfect scoring position in front of the goal for the easy tap in score. D. Anderson saw his opportunity to once again tie the soccer game with a beautiful assist by Chris Klotz.

Klotz got his own statistic by using his ball handling and control along with patience on the field before taking the shot past Mott at the ninth minute of the game to push Jiffy Lube up by a goal.

As expected, Sato Real Estate would keep the scoring pressure on their opponent. Nate Welch scored his lone goal of the game with five minutes left in the first half. Welch’s goal took the score to three goals all.

Great saves by both goalies kept the offense of both teams working hard to break the tie. Finally, with seconds quickly ticking off the scoreboard clock, R. Anderson struck hard only to be batted away by Mott. Mott’s save bounced the soccer ball right back to the feet of R. Anderson.

With 30 seconds left in the half, R. Anderson took advantage of a rattled Mott and scored Jiffy Lube’s fourth goal of the game. Welch tried to put another point on the board for Sato Real Estate, but the shot hit hard off the goal post to end the first 23 minutes of play.

Josh Sato took over protecting his team’s goal as Mott took the field. Jiffy Lube quickly proved to Team Sato Real Estate that they are a top tier team with another Klotz-D. Anderson combination. Well into the 30th minute of play, D. Anderson scored with a shot into the right corner of the net to widen his team’s lead by two goals.

Down on the Jiffy Lube end of the pitch, Mott found the ball at his feet. Looking for an open man, Mott hit Zorn Kolega in front of the goal for a skillful header and a goal advancing the score to 4-5.

Anderson took advantage of Sato Real Estate’s goalie out of position after out maneuvering Kolega for another shot and his fourth goal of the game. Five minutes later, R. Anderson took strong leg to the soccer ball, sailing it just past the feet of Josh Sato for the final goal of the game, ending with the score 4-7 and Jiffy Lube’s fifth win of the season.

The first quarterfinal play off game on Thursday matches #4 seed Moss Builders against the fifth ranked Sato Real Estate. Playing the 7 p.m. game pits third place regular season finishers Jiffy Lube against sixth seed Acqua Aveda. The number two team Mulock Flynn Law faces #7 seed Ross Built Construction at 8 p.m. The topped ranked Slim’s Place looks to knock off last place Mar/Kis Insurance in the final game of the night.

Each team is planning to fight hard to play another game toward the league championship and capture the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup and post-game celebrations at Slim’s Place.
