Island youth soccer playoffs underway

ANNA MARIA – The final days of school added to the excitement of the first two rounds of youth soccer playoffs played last week at The Center of Anna Maria Island. On Monday night, four games were played and the teams advancing to round two were determined.

In an exciting finale, team AMI Coconuts beat out the Emily Moss Design squad in post-regulation play penalty kicks. Emily Moss Design’s goalkeeper Miles Moss earned top honors in this demanding position with the Outstanding Goalie award.

Isola Bella Italian Eatery won out over team Shady Lady Horticultural Services by one goal, advancing along with the team in pink to Tuesday’s round two play of matches for the 8- to-10-year-old league. Winning Most Improved Player accolades for the season, Shady Lady’s Leo Tyler played hard all season, honing his skills each game.

The older kids played last Monday night with Moss Builders sitting out as the first-place finishers at the end of the regular season. Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control and HSH Design came out on top over Solid Rock Construction and The Gitt Team, respectively.

The Gitt Team roster nearly swept the 11- to-14-year-old league awards this season. Teammates Jasmine Sparks, Gunnar Maize and Charlee Maize won the league’s Defensive MVP, Most Improved Player and Sportsmanship awards, respectively.

Co-league MVPs Brittany Robertson and Mason Moss played with dedication for team HSH and Moss Builders, respectively, during the season to earn their awards. Both teams moved past round one of the playoffs.

Wednesday night’s soccer play solidified this week’s two championship game opponents. With their wins, The Intuitive Foundation and Solid Rock Construction earned their places in the final game of the season for the elementary school age co-ed soccer league.

The three goals scored by The Intuitive Foundation squad were off the feet of Gunnar Maize and Parker Svoboda, league co-MVP, alongside Solid Rock’s Everly Chaplinsky. Maize’s two goals against team AMI Coconuts solidly put his team in the championship game against Solid Rock Construction.

Despite winning Defensive MVP honors for the season, Aiden Guess scored the only goal in Solid Rock’s game against the Isola Bella Italian Eatery team. Isola’s Carson Long was honored with the Sportsmanship Award this season for his age group.

Night two for the tweens and teens last week only had one match-up with Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control getting a big win against team Moss Builders. The Westfall win put them in the final game of the spring youth soccer season this week against HSH.

Adult players completed the regular season battles on the pitch this past Thursday night with Pool America finishing at the top of the standings. The big kids will finish spring sports at the Island community center in June.

ANNA MARIA – The weather is heating up and so is the adult soccer action at The Center of Anna Maria Island. With one game left in the regular season to be played by each team this Thursday night, week eight action left three teams with five wins and team Pool America on top.

Pool America’s 4-2 win over Beach House Waterfront Restaurant earned the team its fifth win. The 5-1-2 record puts them one win over the Progressive Cabinetry.

Losing by two goals, the Beach House team put two points on the scoreboard with eluding strikes by James Rodrigues and Marco Ruiz. Their teammate and keeper Aaron Frech made 11 stops.

Cody Wright put a hat trick to his season statistics. Adding to Wright’s three goals, Brandon Rolland not only saved seven shots but he is also credited with a goal in the third game of the night.

Closing out the soccer action for the night, second-seed Progressive Cabinetry narrowly lost to the Diamond Turf squad. The loss placed the team solidly one win under the league’s leader.

Progressive Cabinetry’s goalie, Tyler Bekkerus, was kept busy by the Diamond Turf offense. Bekkerus had 12 nice saves, but the Progressive defense could not stop McKenna Ainger and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos.

Bolanos had two goals to help his team earn the win, while Ainger is also credited with an assist.

The third team to end week eight with five wins was Salty Printing after winning against team Ross Built. In his usual place at goal, Charles “Tuna” McCracken is credited with 10 stops against the shooting of the Ross Built Custom Home squad.

Only the foot of Ted Hurst could get by the Salty Printing defense and past McCracken.

The Ross Built team fought and held Salty Printing to just three goals. Goalie Tim Holly made 12 saves and earned himself a yellow card.

Nate Talucci took his place in the goal for a short time while Holly sat out. Talucci earned another veteran stripe with a save, helping to keep his team in the battle.

Scoring for the Salty squad were Kevin Roman with a solo goal and Tyler Brewer hitting two.

With Mark Long in the goal for the Solid Rock team, Sato Real Estate’s Damir Glavan started the scoring in the first half of play. Teammates Zacharieah Anabtawi and Alex Landy added three points to the scoreboard for the win.

Landy shot for two points as the Sato Real Estate offense moved the soccer ball smoothly down the field.

Long’s counterpart, Paul Jennison for the Sato team had nine saves in the game, besting Long by one.

Holding a place in the middle of the pack, team Sato Real Estate should see the playoffs. Their 4-4-0 record is not as strong as the squad would like, but nice wins come at the best times in the season.

With three teams earning only two wins going into the final regular season game, Solid Rock Construction can work itself off the bottom of the rankings before going into the post-season action.

The last regularly scheduled games will be played on Thursday, May 23. The spring adult flag football season playoff bracket with 10 teams, as opposed to the usual eight, makes it so that the old league adage of “everyone makes the playoffs” is not true this season.

The outcome of the five games of this week’s action is crucial to decide which eight teams will move on to the quarter-final round of the playoffs.

The last teams in the four seeds will play two head-to-head games, resulting in the eighth and final playoff position. These games will be played on Wednesday, May 29. The playoffs start next Thursday night.

At the end of the single-elimination playoff games, the championship title will be earned on Thursday, June 13.

ANNA MARIA – After two halves of youth soccer action, team AMI Coconuts could not put a point on the scoreboard against The Intuitive Foundation squad in the 8- to 10-year-old recreational soccer league at The Center of Anna Maria Island.

The Coconuts team put up a strong fight and played hard, but they were not strong enough to beat the top-ranked team in the 7-0 game last Tuesday night.

Initiative’s Parker Svoboda, Gunnar Maize and Bailey Shenbaum lit up the field with their strong play. Maize added to his stats with two assists in the game.

Defensively, Silas Whitehead continued his strong play in the goal with seven saves. Teammate Sawyer Leibfried had four big stops of his own in week six soccer action.

Game two ended in a 0-0 tie between Solid Rock Construction and Isola Bella Italian Eatery. The game was a defensive battle with the goalkeepers earning their stripes as experienced players.

Isola’s Carson Long had six stops in the game, while his counterpart Elijah Roadman made five nice saves for the Solid Rock team.

Despite a yellow penalty card assessed to Ismael Guerrero, the Shady Lady Horticultural Services team won its first game last week against team Emily Moss Design. In the 3-2 victory, Leo Tyler scored two goals and teammate Joseph Caballero put a point on the scoreboard for the hardworking team for the W.

Shady Lady’s goalie Easton Knock made five solid stops against the Emily Moss offense.

Titus Moss and Aden Mould each scored a goal for the Emily Moss Design team. Defensively with eight saves, Miles Moss helped keep his team in the game.

With one regular season game to be played on Tuesday, May 14, the season championship match-up remains up in the air. Tuesday’s results in the last three games leading up to the first round of playoffs will determine the single elimination bracket.

The Intuitive Foundation will challenge Shady Lady Horticultural Services after their first win of the season. Isola Bella Italian Eatery faces Emily Moss Design and Solid Rock Construction plays team AMI Coconuts.

Six teams have their eyes on the prize to be awarded to the winner on Tuesday, May 28 at the end of the league’s championship game.

ANNA MARIA – Youth soccer on the Island goes into the month of May with playoff games on the horizon.

In the 8- to 10-year-old league, The Intuitive Foundation team is holding on to the first-place position over team Solid Rock Construction. With their one-point win against Isola Bella Italian Eatery, the Intuitive squad has a 4-1-0 record.

Parker Svoboda put the two points on the scoreboard for The Intuitive Foundation. Teammates Sawyer Leibfried and Silas Whitehead had three total saves in the game to help with the win.

Isola Bella Italian Eatery’s Carson Long worked hard as goalkeeper, keeping his team solidly in the game for two halves of play. Long had four saves against the Intuitive offense.

Scoring the only goal for his team, Asher Patel had a solo goal in the fifth game of the season.

Phoenix Harwood scored two goals against the Emily Moss Design goalies, helping to give AMI Coconuts their second win of the season. Harwood’s brother, Andre, made four solid stops, and teammate Owen Serra had two saves as goalie for the Coconuts team.

Defensively, Miles Moss and Wesley Bekkerus showed solid goalkeeping skills for Emily Moss Design. Bekkerus made two saves, adding to the five stops by Moss.

Shutting out Shady Lady Horticultural Services in the third game of the night, team Solid Rock Construction won 2-0. With goals by Everly Chaplinsky and Lucas Urbiola, the team put up its fourth win, keeping them hot on the heels of team The Intuitive Foundation.

With three saves each, Simon Messenger and Karlan Mohib worked the goal for team Shady Lady. Solid Rock’s keepers Samuel Raulerson and Elijah Roadman each had four stops against their worthy opponent in the league’s final game of the week.

The 11- to 14-year-old league teams pressed pause on regular season match-ups with a mid-season tournament. Playing on smaller fields for quick, fast-paced action in the double-elimination tournament, the teens played hard against their normal opponents in the fun format.

Team Moss Builders came back to win the tournament after an early loss. Moss’ win against the Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control team earned the squad three points in the league standing. Two points were awarded to the Westfall team for their second-place finish.

With the youth soccer championship games scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, the two leagues go into the playoffs with the big game in focus.

Pool America, Diamond Turf tie

Pool America, Diamond Turf tie

ANNA MARIA – With warmer weather in the air, the adult soccer league took the pitch last Thursday night for the fifth week of regular season play.

The Pool America team played without their captain, Chris Klotz, and other key players.

Also playing without a full roster, team Diamond Turf narrowly escaped a loss, tying the game against Pool America 3-3.

Samuel Romero started the game in goal for Diamond Turf. Romero made four big saves to help his team in the first half of action.

Sharing the keeper’s responsibility, team captain Yuri Pereira managed the Diamond defense. The position change allowed Romero to score one of the three team goals.

The Diamond Turf offense scored off the foot of Curtis Bickler and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos. Teammate Stephen Adair was credited with an assist.

Nate Welch and Hakan Toka put the points on the scoreboard for Pool America. Welch added to his scoring total with two goals to help his team earn a point going into week six.

Pool America sits in second place, while Diamond Turf is ranked eighth. With four weeks of the regular season left to be played, there is ample time for the standings to shift.

Third-ranked Salty Printing shut out the Beach House Waterfront Restaurant squad. Team captain Kevin Roman scored two goals with an additional point scored by Tyler “Bean” Brewer.

Brewer had two assists in the game, adding to teammate Erica Nielsen’s single assist and solo goal.

The strong Salty defense, including Charles “Tuna” McCracken in goal, stopped the Beach House offense. McCracken had seven saves in the 4-0 victory.

The Beach House team, playing without all of their players, worked hard, staying in the game at any given time. Ultimately, the lack of time on the clock and the inability to score made the loss inevitable for the team captained by Jake Parsons.

Parsons started in goal for his team, making five saves. Aaron Frech relieved him and saved four goals during his time at the net.

In the third game of the night, team captain Ryan Moss had 10 stops in two halves of soccer action for Moss Builders. On the other side of the field, playing for team Progressive Cabinetry, The Center’s Operations Director Tyler Bekkerus saved nine shots.

Moss Builders’ goals by Kali Richardson and Karri Stephens, along with an assist by Ed Moss, just were not enough to pull out the win against the number-one-ranked team in the league.

Progressive Cabinetry’s scoring came from team captain Keith Mahoney, with two goals, and Junior Martines. Martines had a single goal and assist in the match.

Team Ross Built Custom Homes won by three goals against Sato Real Estate. Ross kept Paul Jennison busy in the goal for Sato recording 14 saves. Dean Hinterstoisser had eight saves letting one by off the boot of Matthew Darak.

Scoring a hat trick, Helio Gomez ensured his team’s win. Ted Hurst added a point toward the 4-1 final score.

Ending in a tie, the final game of the night once again denied the Solid Rock Construction team a W. The team is going into the final games of the regular season on the cusp of its first victory, with three tied games.

Solid Rock’s opponent was team Language Service Associates, a team right in the middle of the pack. The team’s three goals were scored by Murat Akay, Selana Gonzalez-Salinas and Austin Nutting.

Ethan Hampton added to his statistics with an assist in the final week five game.

Holding down the goalkeeper position, Steve Oelfke solidly stopped 10 shots by Solid Rock. Mark Long commanded his post as keeper for Solid Rock with seven saves.

Long’s teammates Timo Vecchio and Jana Whitehead did the scoring for Solid Rock. Vecchio’s single assist added to his two-game goals.

The top team at the end of the regular season is anyone’s to predict. With full rosters on the field and sidelines, all 10 teams in the league are capable of championship game-level play.

Anna Maria Island community remembers philanthropist

Anna Maria Island community remembers philanthropist

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – Charles “Chuck” Lester’s legacy of philanthropy and friendship is being remembered on Anna Maria Island following his passing on April 19 at the age of 92.

“I have nothing but great feelings for Chuck. I have such admiration and respect for a life well-lived,” Island businessman Ed Chiles said. “It’s a life and legacy that needs to be celebrated, not mourned.”

Lester passed away at HCA Florida Blake Hospital.

Holmes Beach resident Chuck and his wife, Joann “Joey” Lester, led philanthropic efforts, particularly for The Center of Anna Maria Island.

“He was half of the most wonderful couple in my history of being in business on Anna Maria Island,” Chiles said. “Joey was the love of his life; you never saw one without the other.”

Christopher Culhane, executive director of The Center, wrote in an email to The Sun:

“For almost 50 years, Chuck Lester touched the lives of many Anna Maria Island residents. The Center of Anna Maria Island will greatly miss Chuck Lester’s jovial and smiling face at this year’s upcoming 22nd Annual Lester Family Fun Day,” he wrote. “The Center and the Island community will be forever grateful for the lifetime support of Chuck and Joey Lester.”

Culhane wrote that the couple created an unparalleled legacy of giving both on Anna Maria Island and in Wisconsin.

“Their legacy will live on forever at The Center through the AMICC Endowment Fund, which was established through the generous support of Chuck and Joey Lester’s unrivaled philanthropy.”

Pierrette Kelly, executive director of The Center from 1989 through 2012, said Chuck started the Giving Challenge on the Island.

“He was a wise man. He said if you put a challenge out there, people will step up,” Kelly said. “They leveraged us to go outside our comfort zones to do more for the community.”

The Giving Challenge ended in November each year and the annual Lester Family Fun Day followed in December, bringing the community together to celebrate the holidays, philanthropy, kindness and generosity, Kelly said.

The free community event hosted by the Lesters at The Center included such activities as pony rides, games, food, crafts, a helicopter golf ball drop and a visit from Santa Claus.

Staff at Duffy’s Tavern in Holmes Beach took part in the Lester Family Fun Days.

“It was great to be a part of that. He gave so much back to the community and that’s what it’s all about,” Duffy’s owner Peggi Davenport said. “They were the sweetest couple. He will be greatly missed.”

Along with supporting charitable organizations he supported local businesses, Chiles said.

“He was a cheerleader for a lot of us, through good times and bad,” said Chiles, the owner of the Beach House, Mar Vista and Sandbar restaurants. “He was someone you could go to for advice.”

“They went north to their home in Wisconsin in the summers, but the Island always felt their presence,” Chiles said. “They didn’t just come here and take and drink from the bounty, they gave so much back.”

Chiles said Chuck Lester was known for his contagious laugh and easy-going manner.

“Everybody loved Chuck,” said John Horne, longtime friend of the Lesters. “He always had a smile on his face, you just wanted to be around him.”

“They touched so many lives. What a huge loss for our community,” Horne said. “My heart goes out to Joey right now.”

Horne, the owner of Anna Maria Oyster Bar, had served on the board of The Center of Anna Maria Island.

“For many years they were so instrumental in the community center,” Horne said. “They did more than just write a check, although they wrote many of those, but they put their lives behind their commitments.”

Horne said education and literacy was important to the Lesters and the couple started libraries in Wisconsin.

“He knew the ripple effect of supporting young children and literacy,” longtime friend of the Lesters, Darcie Duncan, said. “They started four libraries in Wisconsin. All of the things they did were done silently. They were passionate about what they supported.”

Duncan has known the couple for more than 40 years.

“Chuck always brought the room to life. Everyone wanted to be with Lesters,” she said.

Over the years, Lester gave Duncan advice for her real estate business.

“There are not many Chuck Lesters left,” Duncan said. “He was a gift.”

Adult soccer league gets shaky start

Adult soccer league gets shaky start

ANNA MARIA – After the clearing of the rain clouds, the area adults played five soccer games in The Center’s co-ed league. With roughly 100 men and women playing this season, the games are compressed and the schedule was tightened to accommodate 10 teams.

After three weeks of play, there is no clear leader this season. Pool America currently leads the pack with two wins and a tie, earning the team seven points.

In the third game of the night, Pool America beat Progressive Cabinetry by a single goal.

With 2-1-0 records and six points, three teams are currently tied for second near the season’s halfway mark. Progressive Cabinetry, Salty Printing and Sato Real Estate each have two wins and a single loss.

Sato Real Estate and Salty Printing went head-to-head last week with the Salty squad coming out ahead by two goals.

Teams Solid Rock Construction and Diamond Turf are searching for their first wins. The Solid Rock team has come close with two ties, earning three points in the season.

Solid Rock Construction took a one-point loss against team Moss Builders. The victory put the team just below the Ross Built Custom Homes team.

Winning one game each, Ross Built, Moss Builders, Beach House Waterfront Restaurant, and Language Services Associates look to better their position in the ranks. Ross Built is the head of the bunch with two ties. Beach House and Language Services each suffered two losses early in the schedule.

In the first game of the night, team Ross Built showed their dominance against the Beach House team, ending the first half of the game 4-0. The Beach House defense changed course during the second half of play, only allowing one additional Ross Built goal.

Beach House came back scoring two goals from James Rodriguez and Matt Staggs. Defensively, Aaron Frech and Danny Free protected the Beach House goal with six and four saves, respectively.

Max Gazzo played at the goal for Ross Built to lead the team’s defense, with scoring by Eliza Faillace, Helio Gomez and Dean Hinterstoisser. Complimenting Faillace’s solo goal, her teammates each got past the Beach House goalie twice.

Playing their fourth game this week, each of them seeks wins to secure their positions going into playoffs.

Sato claims adult indoor soccer championship

ANNA MARIA – To close out the winter 2024 sports season at The Center of Anna Maria Island, the adult indoor soccer players went into round two of the playoffs last Wednesday knowing that if they won, they would advance to the championship game in only a few very short minutes.

In the first game of the night, second-ranked team Pool America lost to the Sato Real Estate team 9-5. Coming into the night as the third seed, Sato Real Estate was ready to play off of the win against Slim’s Place the week prior.

Pool America had a bye in round one playoff action.

Team Bucky Construction faced the same fate in the semifinal round against ServisFirst Bank. Fourth-ranked team Servis beat team Mi-Box to earn their round two seat. Top-ranked Bucky Construction had the week to rest.

The week off for Pool America and Bucky Construction seemed to work as a disadvantage for the two top-ranked teams. ServisFirst Bank’s win matched them up against Sato Real Estate in the final indoor soccer game of the season.

Having the apparent advantage of playing the first game of the night, Sato Real Estate led the championship game going into halftime 3-2. As the game clock ticked, the fatigue of playing back-to-back games started to take its toll on team ServisFirst Bank.

Team captain Josh Sato protected his team’s goal for the duration of the match, with 14 recorded saves. Servis shared the goalkeeping duties between Scott Cooper and Robert Fellowes. Cooper finished with three stops, while Fellowes put three saves in the game stats.

The game’s 15 points came off the boots of Sato Real Estate’s Ted Hurst and Nate Welch, scoring four and three goals, respectively, as well as two goals for each of the ServisFirst Bank scorers Nate Stotler, Luca Vecchio and Fellowes.

James Noblett and Sato each added a single point for the Sato Real Estate team, contributing to the team’s solid win.

Team Sato Real Estate progressively widened its lead with the final whistle blowing to a 9-6 win for the slightly favored squad. As the indoor soccer season ends, the play on the outdoor pitch starts with spring adult co-ed and youth soccer on the Island.

Floridian Mortgage wins championship

Floridian Mortgage wins championship

ANNA MARIA – Spring has sprung and winter sports at The Center are coming to a close, with team Floridian Mortgage earning the win against team Moss Builders Thursday night in the adult co-ed flag football championship game.

The top two teams in the league matched up in the final game of the season in a tough-played game. Losing by 19 points was unexpected for the talented Moss Builders squad.

With the final score of 39-20, the QB-receiver connection made the difference for Floridian Mortgage. Throwing for 22 completed passes, Chase Richardson led his team to victory.

Richardson’s counterpart, Jonathan Moss, threw three touchdown passes for Moss Builders, contributing to the team’s 18 completed passes in the game. Moss hit Evelyn Long for a touchdown, scoring six points in the championship game.

Long finished the game with eight catches and three flag pulls.

Cheesecake Cuties, Moss Builders win championships

ANNA MARIA – With local spring break closing in, The Center worked the youth flag football schedule to conclude before the Island kids take some time off for the season. Last week’s gridiron action saw the semifinal round games played on March 11 with the championship matchups the following day.

After strong, action-packed games on Monday, four teams faced their opponents in the final youth flag football games of the winter. Number two seed Cheesecake Cuties came out on top in the 8- to 10-year-old league, while the older Moss Builders squad remained number one in their league.

Cheesecake Cuties earned their spot in the big game, defeating team Sato Real Estate 12-6. The younger Moss Builders team beat Adrian Griffin Interiors 33-14 to clinch their place in the championship matchup.

In the 11- to 14-year-old league’s semifinal play, team Moss Builders faced the fourth-ranked Solid Rock Electric. Moss’ win put them on the field against the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team in the age group’s final game. Shady Lady Horticultural Services were out of the playoff race after the 24-13 loss to Solid Rock AC.

The final game of the season for the younger league was a close one. Cheesecake Cutie’s five-point win was the result of two touchdown passes by Sawyer Leibfried. Leibfried found the hands of Andre Harwood and Gunnar Maize.

Harwood was the game’s top flag puller with five defensive stops. His game stats include two receptions and an extra point after a TD.

Maize added a rushing touchdown to his offensive accolades. On defense, Maize nabbed an interception and three flags.

Teammates Wesley Bekkerus, Phoenix Harwood, Henry Leibfried, Simon Messinger and Payton Miller all made strong contributions during the championship game and the season.

Despite the loss, the Moss Builders team fought hard with huge plays and determination.

Quarterback Miles Moss threw for two touchdowns to Braylen Briggs. Briggs finished the game with four catches and three defensive stops.

The points after scores by Briggs were made from catches by Cannon Ott and Kellen Reed. Defensively Ott and Reed had a total of three flag pulls.

Adding to the Moss Builders stats were Owen Mahoney and Owen Serra with three flag pulls by Mahoney and a single for Serra.

The Moss Builders squad had playmakers, like Tristan Boender and Oliver McCallister, who helped get the team to the final game of the league’s season.

Moss Builders’ older team won by 15 points against the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team to capture the winter flag football title.

Miles Moss’s older brother, Mason, led the charge as quarterback for team Moss Builders. Throwing for three TDs, two to Austin Guess and one to Addie Guess, Mason was arguably the most valuable player of the game.

In addition to throwing for 21 points, including three one-point conversions, Moss had an amazing game scoring a rushing touchdown along with three catches. On defense, he made seven flag pulls and grabbed two interceptions.

Moss’s receivers for the extra points were Aiden and Austin Guess along with one by Turner Worth. Rounding out the statistics for the Guess family trio was five overall catches for Addie and three flag pulls made by Aiden.

Austin Guess topped it off with seven total receptions and six defensive stops.

Worth added to the team’s playmaking on defense with six flag pulls and the only sack of the night.

The Moss Builders team showed its depth on the field with big plays by the entire roster last Tuesday night. Ryder Boender had four flag pulls, with teammate Gunner Maize making three stops of his own.

On the other side of the field, the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team played two solid halves of flag football.

Lilian Price made her contributions to Solid Rock Air Conditioning’s success this season. Her teammates worked to keep the championship game against the number one seed close.

Scoring 12 points, Hayden Eurice threw to Isaac Roadman for six points. Carter Eurice took the football into the endzone, scoring six points for the Solid Rock team.

H. Eurice contributed on defense with nine stops in addition to the flag pull by C. Eurice.

Roadman’s contributions on the field were on both sides of the football. Offensively, he caught six passes by H. Eurice. While playing defense, Roadman made two stops and a huge interception.

Also playing D, Van Havell, Obadiah Roadman and Luke Willing all grabbed flags to help contain the Moss Builders offense.

Despite the grand effort, the Solid Rock Air Conditioning squad came up short of the league champions, Moss Builders, to close out another fun-filled season at The Center.

Coaches vote league’s best

ANNA MARIA – The winter flag football playoffs started and the youth league award winners were announced last week. With the coaches’ votes in, 10 well-deserved players heard their names announced on The Center’s field.

Playing in last week’s opening game, AMI Coconuts’ Camden Rudacille, the league’s winner of the sportsmanship award, proved he is not only one of the best-spirited players in the league but also a skilled baller.

With one touchdown catch and a two-point conversion on offense, Rudacille also had a strong defensive game against the Moss Builders team, including six flag pulls and an interception.

Teammate Adelaide McGraw and Cheesecake Cutie’s Gunner Maize earned the offensive most valuable player honors for the 8- to 10-year-old league.

Despite the team’s loss against top-ranked Moss Builders, McGraw had a strong game with one reception and a big defensive stop.

In the third game of the night, MVP Maize’s team dominated the Beach House Waterfront Restaurant team, winning 33-0. The Cheesecake Cutie standout once again showed why he is deserving of the title, with 21 points, including a touchdown reception, a rushing score and a pick-six.

On the other side of the football, Beach House’s Aiden Guess, winner of the defensive MVP votes, had three flag pulls against the Cuties offense.

Team Adrian Griffin Interiors advanced to the semifinals with a win against Chick-fil-A. The league’s most improved player, Silas DeWitt, playing for the victors, finished the game with five catches, including one for six points and three big defensive stops.

Sato Real Estate won the second game of the night against Solid Rock Construction by 20 points in the defensive battle.

In the older youth league, Solid Rock Electrical’s Estella Long lit up the gridiron as the MVP against team HSH Design. Long had four catches and scored six points. On the other side of the football, Long stopped the HSH offense with seven flag pulls.

The league’s most improved player, Van Harvell, playing for Solid Rock Air Conditioning, helped his team to their narrow victory against Progressive Cabinetry. In the two-point game, Harvell scored a touchdown and made five big flag pulls in the night’s second match-up.

Team Wings N Things could not advance to the next round of the playoffs, despite having two of the honored players in the league. The Shady Lady Horticultural Services team was just too strong, holding Ryk Kesten, the defensive most valuable player, to one TD and five flag pulls.

Sportsmanship award recipient Charlee Maize caught two passes, pulled eight flags to stop forward progress and sacked the Shady Lady QB.

Closing out last week’s youth flag football play, team Moss Builders solidly won against team Freckled Fin. With the final score 52-8, Mason Moss put up numbers that echoed his season accomplishments which earned him the coaches’ votes for MVP.

Scoring two rushing touchdowns and catching for another six, Moss also had two interceptions, including taking one down the field to score.

Moss clearly showed his dominance both on offense and defense, finishing the game with a flag pull and one-point conversion to end last week’s youth play.

This week’s youth flag football action started on Monday with team Sato Real Estate facing the Cheesecake Cutie team, as well as the 8- to 10-year-old Moss Builders team taking on Adrian Griffin Interiors.

On Tuesday, the older Moss Builders team played Solid Rock Electric while Solid Rock Air Conditioning opposed the Shady Lady Horticultural Services squad in semifinal action.

Adrian Griffin Interiors bests Moss Builders

ANNA MARIA – With no adult indoor soccer play last week, the sports focus on Anna Maria Island was flag football. Ending February with youth gridiron action and starting the month of March with adult flag football play, the Island’s community center moves into round one of the playoffs this week.

In the 8- to 10-year-old league, team Sato Real Estate had a smooth game against AMI Coconuts, winning 34-6. Brandon Sato made his mark with two throwing touchdowns and running himself for two.

Teammate Grayson Cohen scored 14 points, catching for two TDs from Sato and successfully finding the end zone for a one- and a two-point conversion against the AMI Coconuts defense.

Bodhi Silenzi put his mark on the game with a big point after, adding to the Sato Real Estate scoring.

For AMI Coconuts, Paul ten Haaf threw for a touchdown to Camden Rudacille. Ten Haaf finished the game with three flag pulls and an interception. Rudacille added to his game stats with two defensive stops.

In a surprising loss to Adrian Griffin Interiors, the younger Moss Builders team had their first loss of the season by a single touchdown. Jordan Steele hit Silas deWitt for the single team score for six points. Steele and DeWitt had three big interceptions to stop the Moss offense.

Moss’ offense just could not click and did not find the endzone in the regular season closer.

In the third game of the week, the Cheesecake Cuties team defeated the Beach House Waterfront Restaurant squad by a touchdown. QB Jermaine Goode threw two touchdowns for Beach House, with the ball finding Leo Tyler and Asher Patel. Defensively, Aiden Guess and Tyler each read the play of the Cheesecake Cuties QB for interceptions.

Patel put five flag pulls into the record books for Beach House, helping to keep the game close despite the loss.

Team Chick-fil-A eked out the three-point win against Solid Rock Construction. Quarterback Prince Izear threw for two touchdowns, both to Ruby Kesten.

Parker Svoboda and Kesten each added one point to the scoreboard with a point after the team’s TD.

Nolan Anderson scored on the ground for Chick-fil-A finding the endzone.

Rushing the football for 18 points, Matthew Darak and Carson Long ran for three touchdowns, two by Darak. Jedi Smith had a one-point conversion, contributing to the Solid Rock scoring.

Defensively, the Solid Rock crew held their own and kept the team solidly in the game with a total of 20 flag pulls. Stops by Eligh Roadman, Darak, Long and Smith helped make it a three-point win for the Chick-fil-A team.

The middle schoolers in the 11- to 14-year-old league had four high-scoring games with plenty of action to close the regular season. With the final score of 38-37, HSH Design beat Progressive Cabinetry.

Tanner Miller threw for six touchdowns, splitting the catches between Landyn Dowell and Kaleb Romagnino. Dowell and Romagnino each had a point after conversion for a total of two points.

On defense, in addition to the team’s 17 stops, Daniel Lukens sacked Kellan Hunt, Progressive Cabinetry QB. Teammate Sterling Holiday broke up the opponent’s offensive drive with a beautiful interception.

On the other side of the football, the Progressive Cabinetry team played hard and held their own. Hunt finished the game with five touchdown passes, splitting them between Braxton Anderson, Jackson Goodhue and Jack McCarthy.

Scoring one point for his team after a critical touchdown, Theo Aupelle was Hunt’s successful target. McCarthy and Hunt each had two interceptions against the HSH offense, along with one for six points by McCarthy.

Turner Worth was the offensive option for Moss Builders, throwing for one TD, mixing up the plays along with QB Mason Moss. Moss added an interception to his game status. Also working on defense, Solid Rock Electrical’s Estella Long had an amazing game. Long finished with four catches and three defensive stops. In addition, Long had her own pick six of an interception of a Moss Builders’ throw.

The Solid Rock scoring included a touchdown from Charlie Serra to Dominik Zupa, as well as an additional one-point conversion by Elijah Casciani.

With solid flag football action in the three leagues, the semifinal games next week should continue to entertain players, friends and families at The Center.

Slim’s Place captures first win of season

ANNA MARIA – In a close one, Floridian Mortgage earned its second win of the season against team Moss Builders 23-19 in the adult co-ed flag football league at the Island’s community center. The Moss squad’s loss was its first of the season after three games.

The game stats show just how close of a pairing the girls on the field were. Muldoon finished the game with three catches, including one for a touchdown, while Long had seven receptions and one TD nab.

On defense, Muldoon had four critical stops and Long snagged three flags. Several long throws were broken up by one of the two key team players, making for fun excitement on the field.

Overall, the defense of team Floridian Mortgage outplayed the Moss Builders’ offense with seven flag pulls and three total interceptions, including one for a touchdown.
