Catalyst takes flag football championship

Catalyst takes flag football championship

ANNA MARIA – The championship adult flag football game last Thursday night may be the beginning of the new era of Moss champions. The victory for team Catalyst, captained by Jon Moss, sets the stage for the possibility of new dominance on the gridiron at The Center.

For years, Moss has played in the recreational league either alongside or against his brother Ryan Moss, who has a number of championships and accolades to his credit. This season, after defeating his sibling and team Rays Ramblings in the semifinal game, J. Moss took his team all the way.

Coming into the game as the second-ranked team, Catalyst was the team to beat. Their opponents, team TBT, finished fifth in the regular season. After beating the top-seeded team, We The Best Lending, TBT came into the championship game determined to prove that their win the prior week was not just a fluke.

TBT started the game with 20 minutes on the clock, getting close to midfield on the second down play. Octavious Cole caught the first down throw by Matt Briley, to give TBT three more snaps of the football.

Looking to score on second and goal, TBT’s throw to Zach Routh was intercepted by J. Moss to deny the touchdown, leaving the score at 0-0.

Catalyst made quick work of the offensive possession with a throw by J. Moss to cousin Greg Moss. In addition to being teammates with his cousin Greg, the team captain packed his team with two additional family members, father Ed Moss and cousin Brent Moss.

On the next snap, J. Moss found B. Moss running down the sideline with a defender right on him. In a beautiful diving catch, B. Moss caught the ball with his body laid out near the TBT 5-yard line.

Moss was the target in the back left corner for the first score of the game. With the point after attempt unsuccessful, Catalyst led the game 6-0, heading into TBT’s second possession of the game.

TBT failed to make the first down due to pressure by the Catalyst pass rusher, giving the football back to Catalyst with 11 minutes left in the first half of the game.

In addition to the Moss family influence on the Catalyst squad, the representatives from Solid Rock Construction rounded out the team’s roster this season: Zach Long, Evelyn Long and Jesse Skipper.

Getting the first call to action, Z. Long made the catch for Catalyst only to be quickly pursued by Melissa Acevedo, who made the flag pull. Moving the football down the field, Z. Long took his team just short of the first down at midfield.

On third down and long, J. Moss could not find an open defender downfield and turned the ball over on downs to TBT.

With 8:30 left on the scoreboard clock, Skipper made a huge stop with a flag pull behind his backstopping Cole from reaching the first down marker. The next play went to Routh and Catalyst was called for holding as the defender tried to prevent him from gaining more yardage.

Consistently throughout the game, Acevedo found herself open, but not seen by the TBT quarterbacks. Tying up the game, Routh held the ball, waiting for the right person to get free in the endzone. With Acevedo all by herself, Routh went to Briley, scoring the TD.

Long thwarted TBT’s hopes of taking the lead in the game with an interception in the endzone, leaving the score 6-6.

With five minutes to play until halftime, J. Moss smartly hit B. Moss for short yardage just to get him into TBT territory, earning three more plays.

Long, who in 2020 was named Inspiration Academy’s head coach and director of volleyball operations, was the intended receiver for Catalyst for the first down play. The play was broken up by Acevedo who cunningly read the play and batted down the ball before it could reach the receiver’s hands.

The fourth snap of the football resulted in a gain of significant yardage by Skipper, getting Catalyst ever closer to the go-ahead play.

On third down, Catalyst had the option to run or throw the football. J. Moss hit Skipper, who ran it into the endzone. Converting on the point after play, Catalyst widened the lead to seven points.

Cole got the first throw for TBT, looking to score before the end of the first half, only to be stopped by E. Long. Time appeared to quickly tick off the clock as each team scrambled on the field to get into position and make critical plays.

With 16.9 seconds on the clock, E. Long put the pressure on the TBT quarterback, who was able to get the football to Cole, who gained yards past midfield.

TBT got the snap-off with no time left on the game clock and the Catalyst sideline calling for the end of the half. The ball was overthrown to the defended receiver in the endzone, taking both teams to the halftime huddles.

After discussing strategies for the next 20 minutes of play, both teams took to the gridiron with Catalyst leading by seven points.

Catalyst started on offense with a play to B. Moss that was quickly stopped by Acevedo. J. Moss’ next throw to G. Moss was solid, but bounced off of him for no catch at midfield.

On a third down and long play, the undefended G. Moss made the reception and ran the ball before being stopped, nearly scoring. After less than two minutes of play with immense pressure by the defense, J. Moss connected once again to G. Moss for a touchdown in the back of the endzone, advancing the score to 19-6.

Moss threw another catchable ball that bounced off the receiver, leaving the Catalyst lead at 13 points.

A flag pull by E. Long stopped the forward progress of TBT’s Cole. Briley followed up with yardage on the next play. Cole got the first down after the third snap, moving TBT further down the field and into Catalyst territory.

Long showed her volleyball skills by batting down the TBT QB’s throw, taking it to second down and goal for TBT. After a critical defensive move by G. Moss, batting down the football in the endzone and preventing the TBT score, Catalyst took over on offense.

A crossing route by B. Moss gave Catalyst positive yardage with 11:30 left in the game. All alone, Z. Long made the catch and ran the football across the field avoiding TBT defenders.

With the spot near first down, Catalyst failed to make the first down giving TBT another chance with plenty of time left in the game.

Finally finding Acevedo, the TBT QB capitalized on the undefended teammate. Acevedo made the catch past midfield and took it down the field before finally called for flag guarding.

Despite losing yardage, the TBT squad started the next set of downs past midfield. On first down, G. Moss sacked Routh who took the snap. Routh held onto the football too long while looking for open players downfield.

TBT could not make their plays work for them, giving the football back to Catalyst with only four minutes on the scoreboard.

In a possible tide-turning play, Donnie Deitch sacked the Catalyst QB in their endzone for a safety, giving TBT two points for a score of 19-8.

For the next two minutes of the game, TBT fought hard and Catalyst maintained. The efforts of the fifth-ranked team was just not enough and the underdogs lost a hard-played game.

In the end, Jon Moss and his Catalyst crew earned the victory and the title, “champions.”

Miz & Hiz Biz/Blalock Walters match-up ends in draw

ANNA MARIA – It was picture day at The Center last Tuesday night and the excitement of youth soccer filled the air as 10 teams took to the pitch for week three action.

As the youngest players left the soccer clinic fields, the tweens and teens of the 11- to 14-year-old league took their places to warm up.

In the first game of the night on the big field, team Miz & Hiz Biz prepared to face the Blalock Walters squad. Two halves of recreational soccer proved how evenly matched the two teams are at this point in the season.

Chad Nunez, for the Miz & Hiz team, scored the first goal of the game off an assist by Stephen Wilson with 9:49 left in the first half of play. As goalie, Wilson was credited with three saves in addition to the assist.

With just two minutes left on the scoreboard clock, Blalock Walters’ Mason Moss tied up the score with a goal of his own.

Ending the half with the score tied at 1-1, both teams returned to the field ready to battle against former teammates and friends in the youth recreational soccer league.

Blalock Walters’ goalie Cale Rudacille finished his first half of work with four great saves. Giving Rudacille time on the field, Moss stepped into the goalkeeper position, making two critical stops of his own in the final 20 minutes of play.

In the action-packed game, with solid match-ups on both sides of the game, the second half of play proved to be just as exciting as the first with two more goals scored before the last whistle was blown.

For Miz & Hiz, Chad Nunez made a shot that got past the goalie for the second team point. Andrew Graham made the statistics sheet with a solid goal shot for Blalock Walters.

After each team scored two goals in the second half with Konnor Oelfke making two goals in the game, 40 minutes of regulation play ended in a tie ball game with the score 2-2.

The two teams will face each other again in week six of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., the last week of regular season play. The four teams in the league are each practicing and playing hard in hopes of making it to the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 at a time to be determined.

WTBL downs TMT in emotion-charged game

ANNA MARIA – Victory slipped through the fingers of the TMT squad in the quarterfinal adult flag football game last Thursday night. In an action-packed contest, the number one team going into the playoffs, We The Best Lending (WTBL), had a tough battle against the number eight team until team TMT appeared to implode in front of the spectators, teammates and referees.

Chase Richardson and his We The Best Lending team scored first, getting past defenders to put six points on the scoreboard. A failed point-after attempt left the score at 6-0.

TMT quickly matched their opponents with a touchdown with 11:45 left on the clock before halftime.

On offense, WTBL quickly lost possession of the football with an interception, putting TMT on the WTBL one-yard line. TMT was able to take advantage of the picked Richardson throw, promptly scored, making it 12-6. TMT then went for a two-point conversion, handing off to Connor Haughey for a nice run into the endzone, giving TMT an eight-point lead 14-6.

Fighting hard against the team with the best record in the league, TMT gave up another six points to WTBL, moving the score to 14-12.

Closing in on the TMT lead, WTBL’s Richardson sacked quarterback Haughey in a critical defensive play. Richardson responded with a touchdown pass that was nullified when he was called for flag guarding.

On the next play, a TMT Hail Mary pass by Sir Williams was not caught by receiver Haughey, who had two WTBL defenders in his face.

At the end of the first half of the game, TMT’s lead remained at 14-12.

The clear underdogs, team TMT was looking solid and on their way to giving We The Best Lending a challenge all the way to the last second of the game.

TMT quickly marched down the field with the first offensive possession of the second half of play. A possible game-changing inadvertent whistle by the referee Tristan Szabo could have given TMT six points and much-needed momentum in the game.

Szabo blew the whistle when he anticipated Kari Hawkins stepping out of bounds. This rare error in the action-packed game appeared to start the unraveling of the ever-fighting TMT squad.

Sending a clear message, We The Best Lending’s Dom Otteni then nabbed a Richardson pass for a quick touchdown and completed a two-point conversion throw to Soultatos.

Down by six, TMT then went three-and-out on the next series, giving the ball back to WBTL.

After rushing yards by Richardson, Cory Banks got the call, making a first-down catch with 12 minutes left in the game.

With TMT’s Hawkins on him like glue, Soultatos made the next touchdown catch, widening his team’s lead to 28-12.

WTBL’s next offensive run ended with a tide-turning contested call on the touchdown play. TMT argued their defense pulled the flag of the WTBL receiver before he crossed into the end zone.

Seemingly the mental straw that broke the camel’s back after what was perceived by the TMT players as a number of bad calls, the TMT emotions ran high for the remainder of the game.

Referee calls were in the heads of the players both on the field and on the sidelines. Non-stop verbal snipes and sneers resulted in two TMT players being ejected from the game by referee Andy Szabo.

With the win in their grasp at one point in the game, TMT saw their chances of moving on to the semifinal round of the playoffs and capturing their first win of the season slip through their hands. Avoiding the upset, We The Best Lending proved once again why they finished the regular season on top as the final second ticked off the scoreboard showing the final score of 28-14.

At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, they meet fifth-seeded TBT, who beat fourth-seeded Sandbar by five points in their quarterfinal match-up. Team Catalyst, who finished with the same record as WTBL in the regular season, faces third-seeded Rays Ramblings at 7:30 p.m. in the last game of the night.

The championship game is scheduled to be played on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m., with an all-star game to follow.

Tidy MD’s coach, John Coleman, borrowed players from other teams to make the matchup against Beach Bums possible for the first game of the night. In the exciting season opener, The Center’s statistics have Riley Karecki, Kirra Quinby and Nolyn Fetzer with one goal each.

Winning by two points, the Beach Bums squad earned the victory with eight saves by Elijah Brannock in goal. On offense, veteran player Dylan Sato had a hat trick scoring three goals. Younger brother Brandon Sato and Turner Worth each had solo goals.

With the Sato brother’s dad, Jason Sato, and uncle, Josh Sato, volunteer coaching on the sidelines, the win put the team in good company with the other undefeated teams going into week two.

This season’s shorter regular season schedule has the playoff and championship games ending before Halloween, with the final games on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Solid Rock Construction wins on hardcourt

ANNA MARIA – The basketball court at The Center heated up last Monday night with Solid Rock Construction looking to remain undefeated at 2-0 going up against the Beach Bums.

The Solid Rock team took an early lead in the game, but Beach Bums, with the team’s and game’s high scorer, Austin Young with 21 points in the game, kept it close going into halftime.

With the score going into the second half of play at 21-16, Beach Bums continued to chip away at Solid Rock’s lead and tied it up at 21 each moving into the fourth quarter.

Dom Otteni and J.J. Friszman, with 20 and 17 points in the game, respectively, fought back to take back the lead in the game for Solid Rock, pushing the score to 38-35 with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Holding their opponent to only three additional points in the next seven minutes of play, Solid Rock cleared the net with six more points, increasing its lead to 44-38.

Playing with no one on the bench, Solid Rock fought hard against the Beach Bums squad until the final seconds. Connor Haughey took to the free-throw line after being fouled with 33 seconds left in the game.

Haughey, scoring six points on the night, made the first shot at the line, missing the second. Down by five points, Beach Bums made final efforts to take the win, but another free throw by Solid Rock Construction and missed shots on offense ended the game with Solid Rock winning 49-42. Both teams now have a 2-1 record going into week four of adult basketball action.

Can Team Catalyst be stopped?

Can Team Catalyst be stopped?

ANNA MARIA – Heading into week six of adult flag football play at the Island’s community center, team Catalyst, led by Jon Moss, remains undefeated and looks to be the team to beat going into the playoffs. The Moss family is well represented on the squad with J. Moss’ father, Ed, playing alongside cousins Greg and Brent.

On the other side of the field, Ryan Moss worked the field against his family members, with lifelong friend Jordan Demers for Rays Ramblings. Alongside R. Moss, James Roadman played against family members Zach and Evelyn Long on Catalyst.

This game exemplifies the spirit of recreational sports at The Center, where friends and family find themselves week after week battling it out on the field or court for the big win and a lot of fun.

J. Moss, credited with five passing touchdowns, hit Greg Moss and Brent Moss for a total of 24 points. Z. Long caught another TD throw and scored on a point after conversion play for the team’s win.

Jesse Skipper’s 10 catches for Catalyst helped to move the football down the field. On defense, Skipper’s quarterback sack kept R. Moss on his toes in the backfield.

In addition to three touchdown throws, caught by Karri Stephens, and Jesse Griffin with two, R. Moss had a pick-six interception nab. Griffin put more numbers in the statistic books with two interceptions of his own.

Rays Ramblings’ Bobby McMilan helped to keep the game close with an extra point and two receptions in the game. But the team’s efforts just were not enough, taking the team’s record to 3-2.

Catalyst meets a battered and diminished Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad this week at 9 p.m. The young team, losing players to college, injury and illness, put a makeshift team together for the first game of the week for a fun game that gave TBT a win by forfeit.

This week’s 8 p.m. game has Rays Ramblings pitted against the 4-1 We The Best Lending team. Movement in the standings going toward the playoffs is still possible. The top seed is still up for grabs and hope is still alive even for the winless.

Everyone makes the playoffs and everyone still can be named champion at the end of the season.

Sandbar handles TMT on the gridiron

ANNA MARIA – Heading into the second half of the adult flag football season, winless team TMT took another loss against Sandbar. Critical mistakes on offense gave the Sandbar squad momentum and points.

Matt Manger, with five passes for scores, also had two interceptions to his credit, including a pick six. Sandbar teammates Bradley Coleman, Brandin Holcomb and Anthony McCance were all targets for the Manger throws for touchdowns.

Adding to his team’s successes, Anthony Mannino had a scoring catch, along with two two-point conversions and a single point after. Currently, Mannino tops the receptions charts for the season with a total of 23 catches.

On the other side of the football, TMT’s QB Keith McQuillen had two passing touchdowns that were essentially nullified with two interceptions for his team.

Jason Caller ran one in for six points. Meanwhile, Connor Haughey had five total receptions, two for touchdowns. Haughey completed his stats for the game with a two-point conversion.

The efforts of team TMT just were not enough again this week, as they continue to look for their first win in the season.

With only a few weeks left in the regular season, Beach Bums hopes to get a W, while Catalyst fights hard to stay undefeated. The weeks already played indicate the championship is anyone’s to win… or lose.

Beach Bums takes soccer championship

ANNA MARIA – The youth indoor soccer season had exciting match-ups last week, all with wins, losses and ties by all four teams. The season came to a spectacular end Tuesday night with two semifinal contests, with second-seed Beach Bums and top-ranked Moss Builders coming out victorious. The two teams faced each other in the championship game.

In the final game of the season, the goalkeepers for each team were kept busy the entire match. Moss Builders’ keeper, Austin Guess, had 16 stops in the game.

In a shooting frenzy, the Beach Bums squad kept Guess working and on his toes. Scoring by the Sato brothers, Dylan and Brandon, helped the Beach Bums team win the big game.

With two big goals, Savannah Coba led the game in scoring for Beach Bums, and helped her team grab the “W” with a final score of 4-1.

On the offensive front for Moss Builders, Gabrielle Bodnar scored the team’s only goal of the game.

All four teams that made up the eight-to 11-year-old indoor soccer league played hard and fought hard on the hard court all summer, reminding players, friends and family why The Center indoor soccer league is one not to miss.

The kids of indoor soccer took a break last week, making adult co-ed flag football the sport to watch at The Center. Three teams went into the week’s action undefeated; only one came out on top.

Team TBT suffered its first loss, falling to Rays Rambling 30-13. Rambling’s Ryan Moss threw for four touchdowns to Karri Stephens and James Roadman. On the other side of the field, Brandon Kull hit Matt Briley and Melissa Acevedo for scoring plays.

Cortez Deep Sea Fishing could not find its groove until late in the game against Sandbar. Looking for its first win, Sandbar scored early and narrowly managed to take the victory 20-13.

The speed of the Sandbar rusher put the pressure on Cortez’s QB Tuna McCracken. McCracken led his team down the field a couple of times, with the Sandbar defense denying them access to the endzone.

On the Sandbar offense, Anthony Mannino threw for two TDs and caught one for six points with Matt Manger at the QB for the play. Manger scored a touchdown of his own to help with his team’s victory.

Being forced to improvise the offense, Cortez Deep Sea Fishing showed their opponent why they cannot be underestimated. Fighting the clock, Cortez’s offense and defense fought hard in the second half of the game taking it down to the final seconds.

Despite the two scoring passes by McCracken to Blake Balais and Tyler Brewer, the missed flag pulls by the Cortez defense and inability to connect at critical moments led to the team’s first defeat.

Beach Bums came into week three looking for their first win, but We The Best Lending found their second win instead with a 30-0 pasting of the Bums.

Quarterback Chase Richardson threw for three touchdowns to Jonathan Soultatos and Dominick Otteni for WTBL. Soultatos added six more points with an interception that he took to the end zone.

Winning for the third week in a row, Jon Moss and the Catalyst crew kept the TMT team scoreless in last week’s game with a 20-0 victory. Throwing to Evelyn Long, Brent Moss and Jesse Skipper, Moss secured his team’s place at the top of the flag football rankings just short of mid-season.

Thursday night Catalyst matches up against Team We The Best Lending, who goes into week four with the same 2-1 record as TBT, Rays Ramblings and Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. TMT and Beach Bums are still in search of their first win.

Youth indoor soccer excitement at The Center

Youth indoor soccer excitement at The Center

In Tuesday night youth indoor soccer action, team Moss Builders and team Shady Lady took the floor for two halves of strong shooting, fierce defense and amazing team play by all. The Moss brothers did the scoring for the Moss Builders team, with the support of the Guesses and the rest of the squad.

Aiden Guess finished the game with one assist, while brother Austin kept the opponent’s scoring to three goals with seven recorded saves.

Mason Moss started the scoring in the first half of play for his team. The Shady Lady defense worked hard to keep Moss’ shooting to a minimum.

In goal for Shady Lady, Cale Rudacille made four critical stops and teammate Jack Zaccagnino saved seven Moss Builders shots. One of the strikes by Myles Moss eluded goalkeeper Zaccagnino, igniting the spectators at The Center.

Three of the Shady Lady powerhouses did the scoring in the game. Amelia Blunkall, Cale Rudacille and Jack McCarthy each had solo goals, giving the team the lead for most of the game.

In the final minutes of the game, Mason Moss scored the third point for the Moss Builder team to tie the game. Each side’s defense fought hard, preventing the other from scoring up to the final buzzer.

The final games of the indoor soccer season will be played on Aug. 10 at The Center, leading to a season champion.

Last week in adult flag football at the Island’s community center, two teams in the league dominated the gridiron. Both Rays Ramblings and Cortez Deep Sea Fishing not only stopped their opponent’s offense but also crushed it during their games. With a final score of 42-6, the game was ended with time on the clock with the mercy rule employed, giving Beach Bums their second loss in the season.

Rays Ramblings took it to the endzone for 47 points and prevented the TMT offense from scoring more than 12 points. For the second time in the night, the mercy rule ended a game with minutes on the scoreboard.

With five weeks left in the regular season, the adult flag football championship title is still up for grabs. The final championship play is scheduled to end with the final game of the season at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Children's Drama Camp

Children’s Drama Camp showcases talented Island youth

ANNA MARIA – After two weeks of rehearsal and education, the 2021 Children’s Drama Camp closed with two performances of “Biome” at the Island Players Community Theater.

The Camp is held by The Center of Anna Maria Island every summer and gives area children ages 5-13 a chance to learn all aspects of a theatrical production. Participants help design costumes, make set decorations, practice singing, and, of course, learn acting.

“I really like acting and singing, it’s really fun,” said Ava Harlin, who played Goliath Beetle, one of the three lead roles in the play about three animals who escape the zoo and travel the world searching for their natural biome, along with Elephant and King Snake. “It’s really rewarding to see the whole play come together. In the beginning, it seems a lot harder, but then it all just starts falling into place,” Harlin added, speaking of the challenges of performing in live theater.

“I’ve done this the whole nine years it’s been going on,” said 13-year-old Gabriella Gilbert, who has been acting since she was in pre-school, and played Elephant in the production.

“This will be my last year since I’ve reached the age limit, but I hope to volunteer and continue to work with the camp,” said Gilbert, who also plans to join her school’s drama club.

The production of “Biome” was more than 30 minutes long with more than a half dozen musical numbers and the children delivered their lines with authority and added plenty of personality that made this a genuinely enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance.

“We had 16 kids this year who ranged in age from 5-13 years old, but we had five kids that were five years old. This presents a challenge because at that age they don’t read yet,” said Pamela Sikkema, drama director for the camp.

“We only get seven two-hour rehearsals, so parents working with their children at home is really important,” said Sikkema, who is also a costume designer, and made all of the costumes seen on stage.

At the conclusion of the 1 p.m. performance, the Island Players presented a check for $2,000 to The Center of Anna Maria Island. This money comes from a grant the Players apply for every year.

There’s plenty more theater to come as The Island Players are excited to kick off the 2021-22 season on Sept. 16 with “The Savannah Sipping Society.” Tickets are on sale now and more information is available at www.theislandplayers.org.

Cortez Deep Sea Fishing lands a win

Cortez Deep Sea Fishing lands a win

ANNA MARIA – The start of the summer adult flag football season kicked off last week with a high-scoring game between the Sandbar Restaurant squad and team We The Best Lending – WTBL is a new business sponsor at The Center.

Throwing up three interceptions, including one for a runback and touchdown, the Sandbar was no match for WTBL, with a final score of 50-22.

Catalyst took the second game of the night by 10 points over Beach Bums. Wearing the new sponsor’s logo, four Mosses, two Longs and one Skipper put significant stats in the record books in the win.

In the blowout of the night, team TBT scored 34 points and kept the TMT squad out of the endzone, finishing the game with the score 34-0.

The final game of the night came down to two failed extra-point attempts by team Rays Ramblings and a nice debut performance of team Cortez Deep Sea Fishing as an adult league squad.

Fielding many familiar faces for the first time in the adult flag football league, six of the seven players on team Cortez Deep Sea Fishing – CDSF – played in the youth league up until the last couple of years.

With the return of Raymond Gardner to The Center’s field after a season-ending Achilles injury in November 2020, but only as a “coach,” the Rays Ramblings veteran roster played an electric game against the young team with the average age of 19.

Playing for the fun of the game and the love of the win, the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad eked out a win despite the three sacks by Karri Stephens and interception by Bobby McMillan for Rays Ramblings.

Tuna McCracken connected with lifelong friend Tyler Brewer for a CDSF TD. Brewer’s scoring includes an extra point.

The female player and veteran player of the game, Ava Zink, showed why her close friendship with teammates was not the only reason she was her team’s pick during the draft. Zink made two catches, including one for a point after conversion. She also had a critical interception on the Rays Ramblings side of the field.

Returning to the adult field for another season, Cole Carter added a running score and interception to his team’s stats. The team’s veteran, Kevin Roman, made important plays on the defensive side of the ball for CDSF.

Blake Balais used his height and jumping ability to help stop offensive efforts of Rays Ramblings by covering the former champion players on the team.

Ramblings quarterback Ryan Moss hit his favorite receiver and longtime friend, Jordan DeMers, for two receptions. In the game, the hot hands of James Roadman and Stephens put 12 points on the scoreboard.

R. Moss found himself under the pressure of the CDSF rushers. Brewer and Connor Ludwig each had one sack. Ludwig’s came in the last minutes of the game, during the Rays Ramblings last offensive possessions. His stop helped give CDSF control of the football and the clock to end the game and give the team their first win 14-12.

Moss Builders top youth indoor ranks

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – With fresh legs and energy-filled kids thanks to the tropical storm threat that caused a delay in indoor soccer play, the Shady Lady 8- to 11-year-old indoor soccer team looked to be the easy winner against the Beach Bums squad last Tuesday night.

The team, however, appeared to lose its mental edge, giving their opponent the opening they needed to come back and win the game by three goals.

Camden Rudacille and Jesse Zaccagnino did the scoring for the Shady Lady team, with a single for Rudacille and two for Zaccagnino.

On the other end of the field, brothers Cale Rudacille and Jack Zaccagnino protected the goal with five and four saves, respectively.

The early work of the Rudacille and Zaccagnino dynamic duos just was not enough to win the game.

The Beach Bums scoring came off the feet of Turner Worth with two goals and Savannah Coba with three points for her team. Worth and Coba each had an assist in the win.

Another dynamic duo brother powerhouse came from the Sato brothers, Dylan and Brandon. Taking turns as the Beach Bums goalkeeper, D. Sato had five saves in the game and B. Sato made two stops of his own.

In the second game of the evening, team Moss Builders retained their undefeated status, with plenty of season left.

Austin Guess had 16 stops in the game for Moss Builders team. Three goalies were kept busy on the Solid Rock Construction squad. The duos dominated again in this game with Chad and Liam Nunez in the goal. C. Nunez made a critical stop and L. Nunez prevented the score twice against the Moss Builders’ offense.

Isaac Roadman topped the goalie charts for his team with four saves, helping to keep the score of the game close.

Offensively, the shooters were on fire. The Schneider family scored four of the six goals for Moss Builders. Jack Schneider topped the scoring with two points. Dean and Guy Schneider each had a goal.

Putting more statistics in the books for the Schneider talented trio, G. Schneider had an assist along with teammate Aiden Guess with an assist and a lone goal.

The talented trios continue to perform on the indoor soccer court with Addie Guess’ goal to add to those of Aiden and the saves by Austin.

The Moss Builders’ win cannot overshadow the work on the offensive side of the field by The Solid Rock crew. In addition to his action in goal, C. Nunez put two points on the scoreboard.

Continuing with the triple threat in the game, I. Roadman’s sibling Obadiah Roadman, scored a goal, while sister Bella played a supporting role.

The duo dominance continued with the strike and score by Solid Rock Construction’s McKenna Darak, while Madi Darak assisted her team.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, July 27, with the championship game scheduled for Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m.

A Hayward Cup worth waiting for

A Hayward Cup worth waiting for

ANNA MARIA – The Florida rainy season only elevated the anticipation of the final game of another adult co-ed soccer season. The skies at The Center parted long enough, despite two rain game cancellations and a looming tropical storm, for the #2 ranked C.A.B.B. team to match up against the unlikely opponent, Salty Printing, in the big game.

After playing the semifinal games earlier in the night, each team had a minute to mentally and physically prepare for another full game of play. C.A.B.B. defeated Flynn Law 7-2 in the first game of the night, while Salty Printing won the important semifinal game against Slim’s Place with the final score 4-3.

Both teams kept the goalkeepers busy in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game. League leader, Connor Haughey, had seven recorded saves for C.A.B.B. His counterpart, Matt Marshall, made 13 stops in the game.

With a valiant effort, the Salty Printing team scored two goals in the game with power strikes by Gerardo Urbiola and Jessica Williams. Urbiola’s goal and single assist just was not enough to help his team capture the cup.

C.A.B.B. earned the W with goals by Austin Nutting, Luc Vecchio and Timo Vecchio. L. Vecchio was credited with an assist along with teammate Lindsey Styka. The C.A.B.B. players who made the statistics book in the championship game, along with Greg Moss, Rim Robertson and Kali Richardson, who helped them get there, closed out the season on top.

Going on a musical journey with Steve Augeri

Going on a musical journey with Steve Augeri

ANNA MARIA – Journey’s Steve Augeri came to The Center of Anna Maria Island on June 17 and the crowd went wild for his classic rock hits.

As a part of the Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series, former Journey lead vocalist Augeri led his band in a rendition of all of the classic rock band’s hits, from “Separate Ways” to “Lights,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Faithfully” and “Don’t Stop Believing.” The crowd cheered, danced, and even got on their feet to sing along in front of the stage during “Any Way You Want It.”

The concert, Augeri’s first in 15 months due to COVID-19 closures and live music cancelations, was one of the most engaging performances of this year’s concert series.

Local musician Sara Nelms took the stage before Augeri, warming up the crowd with her beautiful voice while playing acoustic guitar.

Next in the concert series is the final show of the season, The Grass Roots, performing July 2 at The Center, 407 Magnolia Ave. All shows are held outside on The Center’s field rain or shine and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for the event. Tickets are available online.

The Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series is brought to The Center by the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau along with presenting sponsor The Sandbar Restaurant.
