Moss, Sato share top spot

ANNA MARIA – The Island weather smiled on adult soccer at The Center Thursday night, as the rain lifted in time to let the fields dry for week two play. After four games, two teams emerged undefeated.

Moss Builders won its second game of the season, beating Servis First Bank 5-2. Goals by Moss Builders’ Gerardo Urbiola, Hakan Toka and Chris Klotz put the game out of reach for Connor Haughey’s Servis First team.

Haughey and teammate, Race Arnade, each put one past the Moss Builders goalie. Greg Moss is credited with two saves for his team, while Yuri Pereira made three nice stops for Servis First.

In the second game of the night, neither team was able to score a goal. Shady Lady and The Gitt Team each lost their first games in week one. In week two, the game ended with the score 0-0 thanks to six saves by Mark Long for The Gitt Team, and seven stops by Shady Lady’s Jake Parsons.

Parsons found himself at the net for the first time since 2010 when he was 15 years old. Parsons is just one of many current adult soccer players in the league who started on the smallest pitch at The Center.

Game three solidified Sato Real Estate as an early contender to win the championship again this season. Despite the eight saves by Tuna McCracken and three by teammate Tyler Brewer, Salty Printing could not put a win in the statistics for the young team, falling 5-1 to Sato.

With the loss of Kevin Roman to an injury, Lucas Vecchio was the only Salty player to get past the Sato Real Estate defense and goalkeeper Ben Sato. Vecchio’s goal came off an assist by Nick Cavalluzzi.

On the winning side of the ball, Sato Real Estate’s Selena Gonzalez contributed with two goals. Will Kretzmann, Danny Anderson and Damir Glavan each put points on the scoreboard toward the 5-1 victory.

The final game of the night was a blowout, with Gulfview Windows & Doors handily defeating Progressive Cabinetry 11-2. The firepower of Keith Mahoney and surefire leg of Greg Ross meant nine points for Gulfview. Singles by Emily Argeros and Daniel Aden were recorded along with two assists by Mahoney.

The two goals by Progressive Cabinetry prevented the shutout. Each team had 10 recorded saves between goalies on each side. Osvaldo Cabello had seven stops for Gulfview, as did Robb Marshall for Progressive Cabinetry.

Sharing keeper duties for Gulfview Windows & Doors, Raul Loera had three saves. Steve Oelfke matched Loera with three of his own. Both teams ended another action-packed night at The Center with a 1-1-0 record going into the third week of adult co-ed recreational soccer play.

Sato Real Estate sets the stage in game one

ANNA MARIA – The spring adult soccer season started off under the threat of rain, but the four opening week games were played without fail. With 22 minutes on the scoreboard clock, the Sato Real Estate team started the scoring strong.

Sato’s Damir Glavan shot the first goal of the season after less than five minutes of play. Glavan’s goal was the first of four against the Shady Lady defense.

With 16:02 on the clock for the first half of play, Sato’s Will Kretzmann shot his first goal of the night, taking the score to 2-0.

In the co-ed recreational soccer league, Selena Gonzalez-Salinas moved the score to 3-0 with a beautiful shot past Shady Lady’s goalie, Tuna McCracken. Michael Moya started the game in goal for Shady Lady but was needed to bolster his team’s effort on the field.

McCracken, who finished the game with seven saves, stepped in to help the Shady Lady squad, down a few players. McCracken is officially on the Salty Printing roster and had to play the next game for his team without a break.

Shady Lady made it on the scoreboard with the only team goal by Nate Welch with four minutes left in the half. The halftime whistle blew with the score 3-1.

Starting the last half of play with the victory still within reach for the Shady Lady squad, Glavan hit his second goal of the night just minutes into the action. Glavan’s perfect position near the post gave Sato Real Estate a three-point lead, with more than 20 minutes left to play.

Sato Real Estate’s fifth goal came off the foot of Josh Sato, from the assist by Glavan. Selfless play karma resulted in Glavan’s third goal. The hat trick pushed the score to 6-1.

Feeling the game slip through their fingers, the Shady Lady team continued to push the Sato Real Estate defense. Between the three official goalies in the game, Sato Real Estate had seven recorded saves against the Shady Lady shooters.

Off a Sato assist to Glavan, the Sato Real Estate hot foot scored his fourth goal of the game. Playing with less than five minutes left in the game and no substitute players, the Shady Lady team saw their hopes disappear.

The final bit of hope ended with the eighth goal by Sato Real Estate by Gonzalez-Salinas off the perfect pass by Sato, ending the game with the score 8-1. The win is predicted to be the first of many for Sato Real Estate in the season.

Shady Lady’s season should be a competitive one with the appearance of the entire team ready to play.

Sato Real Estate takes on Salty Printing Thursday night in the 8 p.m. game. Salty lost their first game against team Progressive Cabinetry.

Shady Lady faces team The Gitt Team Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. The Gitt Team could not score against the Moss Builders squad, losing with the final score 3-0.

The strong Moss Builders team plays in the first game next week against Servis First Bank. In a close game against Gulfview Windows & Doors, Servis First captured their first win by a single goal.

Gulfview looks for their first win of the season against Progressive Cabinetry in the late game next Thursday.

Week two action could produce an early leader. Can Sato Real Estate win another championship? Will Moss Builders or Gulfview Windows & Doors, veteran sponsors and champions, take another finale?

The season’s champion will be named in June, with strong soccer action each Thursday night at The Center.

Pop icon readies to take Center stage

Pop icon readies to take Center stage

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – The latest icon to take the stage at The Center of Anna Maria Island will take audience members back to those endless summer nights.

Award-winning singer, songwriter and author Richard Marx takes the stage on Wednesday, March 23 at The Center as part of the Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series presented by Bradenton Area Arts and Culture, The Sandbar and Cedar Cove Resort and Cottages.

Marx told The Sun that this would be his first trip to Anna Maria Island, and it’s an experience that he’s looking forward to.

“It’s one of the few places that I haven’t been yet,” Marx said. “First time’s a charm, hopefully.”

After taking a two-year involuntary hiatus from performing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Marx said he’s happy to be able to play for his fans again and form a more personal connection with the audience.

Stepping back up on stage after two years away from playing live was an emotional experience for Marx, who said he was a little nervous before the show began. “It turned into a two-and-a-half-hour party,” he said of the show, something that he hopes to bring to his performance at The Center.

“They’re like my friends,” he said of the audience. “I’ve never enjoyed touring more and I’ve never been more grateful to still be doing it, having people show up.”

In addition to playing some of his best-known hits, including “Endless Summer Nights,” “Right Here Waiting,” “Hazard” and “Should’ve Known Better,” Marx said the audience at The Center can expect a night full of great music, fun stories and just a great time hanging out together for a few hours.

“My goal every night is that people go home feeling like they hung out with me for a couple of hours and that they kind of got to know me a little bit and that they laughed and that we just had fun together,” Marx said. “Now, more than ever, I feel like I have the ability to provide a two-hour escape from the world and reality and that’s a pretty valuable thing to be able to give somebody. I’m giving it to myself as well at the same time.”

While at home during the pandemic, Marx took time to play a few acoustic shows available online. The pandemic also gave him the opportunity to realize a career milestone outside of the music industry – he became a best-selling author.

With his first book, “Stories to Tell,” Marx said it felt like less of a memoir and more like a conversation about some of his more entertaining life experiences that he’s having with friends over a martini. The book illuminates some of the twists and turns in his life that led him to write some of his most popular songs, though Marx said it’s not just about the stories behind the songs. And with one book under his belt, Marx added that he may still have some more entertaining stories to tell that could one day make a second book. For now, he’s focused on making music and getting back out on the road.

His new album, “Songwriter,” is due out in late summer 2022 and is a very different project for the Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter.

“I love that process,” he said of the recording process. “I love making up a song in my head and hearing it come to life.”

After releasing more than a dozen pop studio albums, Marx said this one is a mash-up of four different types of music that he loves – pop, country, rock and ballads spread across a 20-track, two-disc set.

“It’s all over the map and it’s all different kinds of songs,” he said, noting that there are five songs in each genre. “It was really fun to make.”

Wit, wisdom and wine shine at Center event

ANNA MARIA – The Center of Anna Maria Island is changing up its events and its newest entry, a wine tasting with friends, is a hit with attendees.

The inaugural Wine Tasting with Center Friends, an evening featuring the wines, wit and wisdom of Thomas Jefferson, debuted March 19 with a sold-out audience of more than 200 attendees.

This first event, created by the same committee that organized the Tour of Homes for two decades at The Center, paid homage to the Tour while getting attendees excited for the future of new events helping to bring community to the Island while raising funds for the nonprofit Center. While the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 Tour of Homes and eventually brought the long-standing Tour to an end, the first of an annually planned wine tasting event honored the Tour by raffling off the 20th and final quilt and featured a miniature version of the Tour’s boutique.

The quilt, created by the Eyeland Needlers, was the final one of 20 quilts created to raise funds for The Center. In honor of her years of contribution to the Tour quilt, local artist Joan Pettigrew pulled the winning raffle ticket during the wine tasting event.

The wine tasting also featured one-of-a-kind artwork created by local artists and up for silent auction. Artists who donated a piece of artwork for the silent auction include Joann Taylor Brown, Wooley Dutton, Emerson, Robert Johnson, Janet Kingan, Maro Lorimer, Jean Murray, Cathy Tobias, Barbara Truemper-Green and Joan Voyles.

And while the art on display was a highlight, the real showstoppers of the new event were the seven wines tasted by attendees with sommelier and certified wine educator MaryKate Scott as the host for the evening.

Guests were greeted at the door with a glass of Crement, a sparkling wine. This Brut was an Antoine Muller Blanc de Blanc. As the night progressed, Scott told the story of Thomas Jefferson’s travels and influences as a young man up until he entered the White House and how those influences shaped the wine that he drank. Guests enjoyed three white wines and three red wines while also dining on charcuterie boards. The featured wines included a Les Dauphins Cotes du Rhone white wine, a Borsao Spanish Macabeo Chardonnay, an Affreschi Pinot Grigio, a Domaine de Briante of Brouilly Beaujolais, a Tomaiolo Chianti and a Lewis and Clark Merlot.

All of the featured wines were available for sale at $25 per bottle of $100 for five bottles from the Olive Oil Outpost with half of the proceeds going to The Center.

Kelly Kary and the Olive Oil Outpost served as featured sponsors of the event with Coldwell Banker, Diamond Turf, Beach Bums, Tom Sanger Pool & Spa, Sato Real Estate and Moss Builders as table sponsors.

Beach Bums, WTBL end season as champions

Beach Bums, WTBL end season as champions

ANNA MARIA – The rain delay the previous week gave four teams additional time to plan their strategy for the semifinal adult flag football games last Thursday night. In a nail-biter, WTBL narrowly won against TBT with the final score 27-26. In a game that came down to a failed extra point conversion by TBT, the WTBL squad moved on to face a worthy opponent in team Moss Builders.

The Moss Builders team, led by Ryan Moss, defeated the Solid Rock Construction squad by five points, without the sure hands and speed of Jesse Griffin. Their win in the semifinal matchup put Moss in his third flag football final game this season as either a coach or player.

What was anticipated to be a close game ended in a 20-point win by the less experienced, younger squad. Putting the pressure on QB Moss was key to the team’s win, with two sacks by Daniel O’Connor and a single by Tyler Brewer.

The heat on the quarterback forced throws and caused one interception by WTBL’s Brandon Kull. Kull had two receiving touchdowns in the game in addition to his interception.

WTBL teammates Julia King, Dominick Otteni and Jaret Rojas each had a touchdown catch in the championship game to give their team 18 points. Rojas and Brewer helped to seal the deal each with points after conversions.

On the passing side of the game, Otteni had the top statistics of the game with four completed touchdown passes. Rojas, serving as QB, threw for six.

Moss Builders’ quarterback was down critical players in the big game. Missing some of his key targets, JB Shuck and Brandon Holcomb became the marks for Moss’ missiles.

Shuck had eight catches for positive yardage and a touchdown. The football hit the hands of Holcomb twice and once for six points.

The defense of WTBL and the skeleton roster widened the scoring gap as the game clock ticked down to the final 31 seconds on the scoreboard clock. In the classic Moss sportsmanship way, the game was called with time on the clock, with the final score 32-12 and WTBL champions.

In The Center’s gym, adult indoor soccer playoff action kicked off, with the Beach Bums team finishing on top against Gulfview Windows & Doors in the championship game.

Gulfview made it to the Big Show after beating Sato Real Estate in semifinal action in a close game. Beach Bums took the victory against Slim’s Place by three goals, putting the team in the final against Gulfview.

In the final game of the night at The Center, Gulfview continued to fight until the last second, but the scoring powerhouse of Beach Bums team was just too much.

Gulfview’s Mark Long and Luca Vecchio each had hat tricks for their team. Julian Rodriguez, Keith Mahoney, and Raul Loera scored a total of five points for their team. Despite this and the 17 total goals saved by Long, Mahoney and Loera, the Gulfview Windows & Doors team could not capture the win.

Lucky Durmaz finished the top scorer of the game with six goals for Beach Bums. Kevin Roman and Mauro Vecchio scored five goals each, with an additional two by teammate David Noval.

Osvaldo Cabello protected the net for his team, making 14 stops for Beach Bums. Vecchio is credited for two saves in the game, along with a save.

After a crazy season of indoor soccer games and forfeits, the season ended with an action-packed final game with Beach Bums champions.

Moss Builders dominates youth flag football

ANNA MARIA – The stage was set at the beginning of the youth flag football season for volunteer coach Ryan Moss and his son Mason Moss to sweep the championships in both youth flag leagues.

The task was not an easy one. The Moss Builders teams each had their worthy opponents, challenging the veteran coach and his teams every step of the way.

At the end of last Tuesday night’s youth flag football playoff action, Moss Builders were the victors in the championship games in both the 8- to 10-year-old and 11- to 13-year-old leagues at the Island’s community center.

In the younger league, Moss Builders faced Prosper Bradenton in the semifinal game, defeating the underdog team by seven points. Solid Rock Construction defeated Beach Bums in a close one to move them on to the final game of the season.

Solid Rock Construction and Moss Builders spent the entire season at the top of the ranks. Despite the two passing touchdowns by Solid Rock’s QB Van Havell to Colson Mendiola and Mckenna Darak, the top-notch team could not capture the big win.

Isaac Roadman supported his team with a big catch. In addition to a TD reception, Roadman’s teammate, Darak, scored a point after attempt (PAT) and finished the game with four catches.

Mendiola and Havell connected for three total receptions in the two halves of championship play. Team support and big plays came throughout the season by Solid Rock teammates Nixon Conner, Matthew Darak, Braylen Briggs and Obi Roadman.

Impressive statistics were recorded by the younger Moss Builders team last Tuesday night. With Mason Moss at the helm playing quarterback, the team took the first of two championship games for the Moss Builders sponsor.

Throwing for 15 completed passes in addition to four touchdown throws and three extra point tosses, Moss led his team to victory.

Moss’ targets were Aidan Guess and younger brother Miles Moss, each with three catches. Miles scored two points with successful PATs.

Teammate Turner Worth had an extra point catch, in addition to receiving a touchdown throw from Mason Moss. Moss Builders’ Austin Guess topped the charts with three connections with Mason for a total of 18 points in the 27-15 final game of the season win.

The Moss Builders team’s season success came with the offensive and defensive play of Andre Harwood, Gabrielle Bodnar, Blake Bodnar and Carson Long.

Team Nissan of Bradenton was the championship team’s semifinal opponent in the 11- to 13-year-old age group play. Winning by 10 points, Moss Builders went up against the tough, top seed Blalock Walters squad in the big game. Team Blalock advanced to play Moss Builders after their 15-point win over team HSH.

The final game of the night was action packed and in the end was a two-point ballgame, with Moss Builders taking home the win.

Coming into the game as the top-ranked team, Blalock Walters knew the arm of Ashton Hovda would keep the game within reach, if not take his team all the way. With three passing touchdowns, two to brother Peyton Hovda and one to Liam Proud, Aston and the Blalock squad came close.

Teammate Jackson Zoller sped down the gridiron for six points, taking the football into the endzone. Cale Rudacille, with two critical catches in the game, scored an extra point for Blalock Walters, helping to keep his team on the heels of Moss Builders.

Mazie Zoller and Mattox Caseman wore the Blalock Walters jersey proudly during their team’s winning season and made key plays for their team all season.

Once again playing quarterback, Mason Moss helped his team win the final game of the night. Moss threw three touchdown passes against the Blalock defense, hitting Greg Jordan each time.

Jordan and Moss connected 11 times for a total of 21 points, including three total extra points. Moss hit his other target, Luke Winsper, twice to make positive offensive yardage.

The cherry on top in his dual league play this season was Moss’ rushing touchdown in the final game of the season. Taking the football into the endzone, Moss added six points of his own to the record books.

The 11- to 13-year-old championship Moss Builders team chased the season leader, Blalock Walters, all season with the entire team playing at the top of their game. Matthew Winsper, Austin Guess, Bella Roadman, Addie Guess, Joey Suebert and Maddie Darak played hard and fought hard all season, helping to make team Moss Builders champions.

The adult flag football games were canceled last week due to rain, delaying the championship game to a date to be determined. Adult indoor soccer play continued as scheduled, with the championship game on Thursday, March 17 at 9 p.m. at The Center.

Team TBT reaches adult flag football semifinals

ANNA MARIA – The first game of the adult co-ed flag football playoff season started off with a close one between the TBT and Shady Lady squads. In the end, after two halves of play, quarterback Matthew Briley and the TBT team moved on to the semifinals after the 26-20 win against Shady Lady last Thursday night.

Despite the three passing touchdowns by QB Connor Haughey, team Shady Lady could not find the endzone for the tying score. Haughey found Jonathon Soultatos, who had a total of six catches in the game, for two scoring plays.

In addition to his 12 TD points, Soultatos made two critical point-after attempts, keeping the Shady Lady team in the mix the entire game.

Shady Lady teammate and youngster Shawn Balvin, graduating to the adult league after a long stint lighting up the gridiron in the youth leagues at The Center, had his own touchdown, with six receptions in the game.

While on defense, Balvin threatened the TBT offense with two interceptions. Jasmin Muldoon and Limarcus Waller made their important offense contributions for Shady Lady with catches from Haughey, keeping the team on the field with positive yardage.

In the 26-20 win, Briley’s scoring targets were Nick Cinelli, Yandy Rocamora and Jeremy Rodriguez, with touchdown catches for each of them.

Cinelli and Rodriguez added two additional points to the scoreboard with extra point conversions. On offense for TBT, Javier Rivera had solid hands with three yard-gaining catches from Briley.

The defensive game of team TBT may have made the difference in the playoff game. Rocamora’s sack on Haughey caused a loss of yardage and forced the Shady Lady offense to switch to quick and option plays.

Cinelli’s interception on a Haughey throw diminished any positive momentum Shady Lady was trying to build.

With the win, TBT returns to play another day in the semifinals. Also moving on to the next round of the playoff is WTBL, Solid Rock Construction and Moss Builders. The four-team showdown leads to the final game of the season when another squad can be called champions.

The adult flag football championship game will be played on Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m.

In other adult co-ed sports action, semifinal action for adult indoor soccer is slated for the 17th at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. in The Center gymnasium, with the Championship scheduled immediately after at 9 p.m.

Team Nissan of Bradenton wins over HSH by three

ANNA MARIA – In an action-packed, high-flying game to start the big field action at The Center last Tuesday night, the Nissan of Bradenton team narrowly won over HSH 38-35 in the 11- to 13-year-old league flag football league. After the seventh week of youth flag football, played Wednesday night as the result of games being canceled due to weather, both squads go into the playoffs with a 3-3 record.

Charlie Rogers, quarterback for Nissan of Bradenton, lead the team to victory with four passing touchdowns. Rogers’ targets, Brennen Gunter and Colten Shook, each had two scoring catches.

Shook also took the football into the endzone, giving the Nissan of Bradenton squad an additional six points with a rushing TD.

On offense for HSH, Jack Mattick and Audrey Guess took to the QB helm, putting 18 points on the scoreboard. Guess threw for two TDs and Mattick threw for six points.

While behind center, Guess’ go-to receivers were Emma Raulerson and Avery Guess.

Critical extra points were made by Audrey Guess and teammate Tyler Conn, with two of his own for team HSH. The successful point-after attempts by Gunter and Shook helped make the difference in the team’s win.

Defensively, Nissan of Bradenton’s pick-six by Gunter was a game-changer. The interception for the score was one of two defensive nabs by Gunter in the game.

Audrey Guess had a takeaway for HSH, which helped keep her team in the game.

Despite the loss, team HSH fought hard and showed why the team is a contender in the playoffs.

The quarterfinal playoff action for the 11- to 13-year-old league starts with Nissan of Bradenton playing Miz & Hiz Biz. HSH Designs has game three of the night against Investigative Lawyers Group. Looking for their first win of the season, Wash Family Construction goes into their game the underdogs against Moss Builders.

Finishing the regular season on top, team Blalock Walters received the bye for the week and will wait to find out who their opponent will be in the semifinal games on Tuesday, March 8, starting at 6:15 p.m.

Taking it easy with Don Felder

Taking it easy with Don Felder

ANNA MARIA – The Center of Anna Maria Island brought a star-studded weekend to a close with a bang Sunday when legendary musician Don Felder took the stage.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer/songwriter/guitarist appeared on Feb. 20 as a part of the Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series, playing all of his greatest hits from his time with The Eagles and his solo outings, as well as a few covers, including a rocking rendition of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Pride and Joy.”

Kicking off the show with “Already Gone,” Felder and his band kept up the audience’s energy despite a cool night on the field at The Center, playing “One of These Nights,” Felder’s solo hit “American Rock and Roll” and “Victim of Love,” a Hotel California album B-side track. The hits kept coming with performances of crowd favorites including “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Witchy Woman,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” “The Long Run,” “Heartache Tonight” and, of course, “Hotel California.”

Opening for Felder and his band was the multi-talented Johnny Jensen, whose album is due out soon.

The Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series is brought to the Island’s stage by sponsors Bradenton Area Arts & Culture, Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages and The Sandbar.

Next on The Center’s concert schedule is Richard Marx on March 23 followed by Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals on April 2. Tickets are on sale now at www.centerami.org/events.

Out of this world fun at Murder Mystery

ANNA MARIA – It was a galactic good time as the Murder Mystery returned to The Center for its 13th year.

The annual fundraiser took a year off for COVID-19 but came back with a bang, or a laser stun for this year’s victim, with the theme “space odyssey.”

Set at World Con in the year 2069, two Men in Black agents, Agent B and Agent J, played by Don Purvis and Ray Gardner, crash-landed at the sci-fi convention just as everyone was arriving. They were also just in time to help solve the murder of Hollywood actor Scott Ridley, played by Caleb Roberts. In a surprise twist, Ridley wasn’t actually dead, coming back as a cyborg robot just in time for the cast to break into a toe-tapping rendition of “Time Warp” that brought the audience to its feet for an unforgettable finale to the evening.

This year’s Murder Mystery dinner theater took place Feb. 18-19 at The Center and featured writer/director/actor Brianna Roberts, Monica Simpson, Jillian Gardner, Leah Purvis, Mike Shaughnessy, Chris Scott and Clay Spangler in addition to Don Purvis, Ray Gardner and Caleb Roberts.

The two nights of the annual theatrical spectacular were performed to nearly sold-out crowds with community members clamoring to figure out who the killer was in the hilarious, tongue-in-cheek whodunit production that featured a different killer each night.

In addition to the show, attendees also enjoyed food by Poppo’s Taqueria and donuts by the Donut Experiment as well as a 50/50 raffle, baskets of raffle items donated by local businesses and a cash bar. There were also plenty of photo opportunities as the event was attended by aliens, secret agents and even a few time travelers. A green alien goddess took home a gift card as an award for winning the Feb. 19 costume contest.

Sponsors for the 2022 Murder Mystery include The Morey Foundation, presenting sponsor The Ugly Grouper, after-party venue The Freckled Fin, Progressive Cabinetry, Sato Real Estate, The Donut Experiment, Abrahamson & Uiterwyk Personal Injury Law, Poppo’s Taqueria, Surferbus Outpost AMI, The Original Sand Dollar, Gnarly Mangrove, Graze Street AMI, AJ & Doran, MuniPlan, Moss Builders, Blade & Tine Culinary Consultants, Nomad Collection, Prosper Bradenton, Emily Moss Designs, Beach House Real Estate, Eason Builders Group, Island Photography, Johnson Homes of West Florida and HSH Designs.

Flag football lights up Center field

ANNA MARIA – This week’s flag football action at the Island’s community center shifted play to Monday night for the youth league. In the 8- to 10-year-old league, Shady Lady was kept to two points with a Luca Vieman interception and run to the end zone on a Prosper Bradenton extra point attempt.

Prosper Bradenton’s Quarterback Grady Sandhoff threw for a single touchdown to Cayson Travis, who had two catches in the game. Sandhoff had two rushing TDs, while teammate Landon Sinphay scored six points running the football.

Preston LaPensee and Riley Karecki each had a catch for positive yardage for Shady Lady in the first game of the week.

Bradenton Beach Parasailing kept the Mac Parkman Foundation team searching for their first win of the season with a 20-0 win. The Solid Rock Construction squad won their fourth game of the season against Progressive Cabinetry in week five action.

Team Beach Bums fought hard against the undefeated Moss Builders team in only their second loss this season.

In the older youth flag football league, 11- to 13-year olds, undefeated team Blalock Walters won their game against HSH by a touchdown. HSH’s Jack Mattick passed for two TDs and took one into the endzone for a rushing score. Receiver Emma Raulerson was Mattick’s target, scoring 12 points in the game.

On the other side of the football, Ashton Hovda threw for three touchdowns. Teammates Peyton Hovda, Mattox Caseman, Liam Proud and Cale Rudacille each had critical scoring catches to help keep the Blalock Walter’s team at the top of the ranks.

Mazie Zoller used her speed to sack the HSH QB twice, keeping the opponent’s leader on his toes.

Zoller, Proud and Rudacille each had extra point conversions, giving their team three points in the game, always keeping a win for HSH just out of reach.

Nissan of Bradenton won against Investigative Lawyers Group, giving both teams a 2-2 record. Team Moss Builders defeated Miz & Hiz Biz by more than two TDs, while Wash Family Construction had a bye week.

Adult flag football was the only sports at The Center Thursday night, with the gym being prepared for the 13th Annual Murder Mystery performance. Adult indoor soccer resumes this week.

The battle between Shady Lady and Cortez Deep Sea Fishing (CDSF) took the game to overtime with the score 43-43. The battle of the QBs ultimately found the Cortez squad victors.

Quarterback Tuna McCracken threw for six touchdowns, including scoring receptions by Cole Carter, Luis Campos and Ava Zink. Campos had 15 catches in the game including three in successful point-after attempts.

The dynamic duo of Zink and Carter each had two extra points in the team’s second win of the season.

With four touchdown throws, the Shady Lady quarterback, Connor Haughey, hit the hands of Limarcus Waller, Tim Holly and Jasmine Muldoon for 24 points.

Taking it into the endzone himself, Haughey scored two rushing touchdowns, keeping his team in the game.

Shady Lady’s ability to score the points after TDs led to the overtime play, in addition to a safety giving the team two points. Shawn Balvin had an interception and scored three extra points in his team’s loss. Holly and Muldoon each had single point-after conversions.

The defense of CDSF helped capture the victory with single interceptions by McCracken, Carter and Zink. Campos also put the pressure on Haughey and is credited with a sack in the game.

Solid Rock Construction and Prosper Bradenton each move to a 3-3 record with losses to TBT and WTBL, respectively. Moss Builders won their fourth game of the season against Sandbar with the final score 42-24.

This week’s adult flag football action is the last of the regular season. The eight-team league will be moving into the playoffs, with the championship game scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Adult flag football standings take a turn

Adult flag football standings take a turn

ANNA MARIA – With just two games left in the seven-game regular season, the co-ed adult flag football league at The Center has a new leader. TBT, now with a 4-0-1 record, is at the top of the charts after week-five action.

The easy win over team Cortez Deep Sea Fishing last Thursday night puts the TBT squad one win over Solid Rock Construction, Moss Builders and Prosper Bradenton, all with 3-2-0 records going into week six of play.

Solid Rock Construction started the season off as the league leader, with a week one win over Prosper Bradenton and a week three win over Moss Builders. Recent losses dropped the team into second place, with the Moss team in third.

Prosper Bradenton’s 26-12 loss to Moss Builders this week places the team in fourth. The Prosper team, without Ray Gardner, who is still recovering from a torn Achilles, fought hard against Moss Builders, with two touchdown passes by QB Jon Moss.

Moss found his father, Ed Moss, on a TD play to put six points on the board. Teammate Jesse Skipper is credited with two sacks on Moss Builder’s quarterback, Ryan Moss.

The speed of Skipper could not stop R. Moss, brother of J. Moss, from throwing for four touchdowns in the team’s win. In addition to the three catches for scores by Jess Griffin, Michael Bolognone had a TD grab of his own.

The defensive game for each team made it difficult for the opponents. In addition to the Prosper Bradenton sacks, Zack Long made a critical defensive move with a big interception of an R. Moss pass.

Moss Builders’ J.B. Shuck made three critical takeaways in the game, preventing J. Moss from finding his target while on offense.

Griffin, with a total of nine catches in the game, was also the target of two extra-point conversions for Moss Builders, helping the team to solidify their 14-point win against Prosper.

Two teams hold the fifth and sixth positions in the rankings with 2-3-0 records. Team Shady Lady is just ahead of the Sandbar team with a win in the head-to-head matchup in the first week of the season.

Holding on to hope and knowing that all of the teams make the playoffs, the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing players are fighting this week for their second win of the season. The team faces Shady Lady during week six play.

The number one team, TBT, battles it out on the community center field this Thursday night against the Solid Rock Construction team. With a win, Solid Rock is one step closer to capturing the top seed going into the quarterfinal round of playoffs.

Youngest footballers learning game at The Center

Youngest footballers learning game at The Center

ANNA MARIA – Each Tuesday night, The Center’s gridiron becomes the training ground for the 4- to 5-year-old flag footballers. This season’s clinic, sponsored by Sandbar, has two teams, more than 10 players on the roster, and two great volunteer coaches.

Coach Dhaval Patel and Kevin Shook take the field each week, not only teaching the rules and skills of the game but also sharing their love of the game and working with kids.

At the end of the season, the youngest players in the league look to the 6- to 7-year-old league as the next level of play, before competitive recreational play begins when they turn eight.

In week four action, the adult flag football league’s standings were rattled as the Sandbar team, coming in with the only win in the season, defeated the undefeated Solid Rock Construction squad by two touchdowns.

Solid Rock Construction now shares the same record at 3-1-0 with Prosper Bradenton at the top of the charts going into the second half of the regular season.

As the adult flag football season looks to the playoffs in the coming weeks, the adult indoor soccer league struggles to make a game happen. With two forfeits last week, the match-up between Sato Real Estate and Gulfview Windows & Doors ended in a tie, after each team scored seven goals. No winner gave each team a 1-0-1 record going into week three of play.

Football, soccer keeping it exciting

ANNA MARIA – The chilled rain kept the kids from the gridiron last week, but the adults kept the action going with adult co-ed flag football action, as well as the kickoff of the indoor soccer season.

Six teams took to the hardcourt of The Center’s gym floor for another season of indoor soccer. The fast-paced, action-packed game kept players and spectators on their toes as the ball ricocheted off of walls, players and goalposts.

In the first game of play, team Sato Real Estate once again made their mark in soccer, but this time sheltered from the elements. With a different roster, the Sato team won their first game of the season against Mi-Box by three goals.

The offense for both teams kept the goalkeepers busy. Josh Sato and Kris Yavalar are credited with 22 and three saves, respectively, for the Sato Real Estate squad. Experience goalie Steve Oelfke had 23 stops in the game, keeping his team within range for the win, but it just was not enough.

In the final game of the night, Slim’s Place’s Greg Moss had six goals in the loss against Gulfview Windows & Doors, making him the top scorer in the league after week one. Spreading out the scoring for the win, Gulfview’s Luca Vecchio topped his team’s charts with four goals. Raul Loera, Keith Mahoney and Daniel Aden had two points each, while Chris Culhane had a solo goal to make the final score 11-8.

Solid Rock Construction beat out season rival Moss Builders in adult flag football this week to put the team at the top of the ranks as the only undefeated team in the league. Moss Builders went into week three tied with Solid Rock, but a pick-six by Christian Hampton, along with interceptions by Hampton and Anthony Mannino, gave them the momentum they needed to walk off the field with the W.

Ryan Moss is credited with a rushing TD for team Moss Builders. Solid Rock Construction’s only offensive touchdown was scored by Octavious Cole, who had five catches in the game.

Team TBT earned their second win of the season against Sandbar. Nick Cinelli’s interception for a score, paired with extra point-scoring by Javier Rivera and Joshua Overton helped with the team victory. Rivera also had three QB sacks in the game, keeping the Sandbar quarterback and offensive squad scrambling for position.

Prosper Bradenton made it look easy against Shady Lady with Jon Moss leading his team with three passing touchdowns. Hitting the hot hands of Greg Moss and Karri Stephens for three TDs, J. Moss and the entire Prosper Bradenton managed to keep their opponent out of the endzone for most of the game.

Stephens added an additional six points to the scoreboard with a rushing touchdown to help give his team the 24-6 victory.

Shady Lady’s six points came when Jonathon Soultatos connected with Jasmine Muldoon. Muldoon had four catches in the game and an interception. Also with a pick was G. Moss for Prosper Bradenton.

In the final game of the week, Cortez Deep Sea Fishing won their first game of the season against WTBL by six points. Sir Williams, in the QB slot, threw for two touchdowns to Luis Campos and Shepard Condon.

Tuna McCracken took the football to the endzone with a rushing TD, giving Cortez Deep Sea Fishing 18 total points in the game.

WTBL’s Jaret Rojas threw for two scores, putting the ball in the hands of Brandon Kull and Dominick Otteni for 12 points in the close ball game.

Going into week four of adult flag football play, it is still anyone’s season. Teams are starting to scramble for their position in the playoffs, as the action continues to heat up on The Center’s field.

Classic rock icon gets a standing ovation at The Center

Classic rock icon shares stage with local choir

ANNA MARIA – Classic rocker Lou Gramm brought the crowd at The Center of Anna Maria Island to its feet with thunderous applause during a stop on his Juke Box Hero tour.

Gramm took to the stage with his band after an acoustic set from local musician Billy Rice of the Billy Rice Band. Playing all of his solo hits along with a selection of classic rock staples from his time with Foreigner, Gramm brought the crowd to its feet for the majority of his two-hour set.

Gramm and his band kicked things off with the Foreigner classic “Head Games” before playing “Double Vision,” “Cold as Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time,” and “Urgent” among others.

The highlight of the show was when five members of the choir from Roser Memorial Community Church joined Gramm and his band onstage to sing Foreigner’s number one smash hit “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

When Gramm launched into a rendition of “Juke Box Hero,” the entire crowd came to its feet and didn’t sit down as the show continued with the solo hit “Midnight Blue” and ended with a performance of “Hot-Blooded.”

The next show coming to The Center’s stage as a part of the Bradenton Gulf Island Concert Series is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for The Eagles, on Feb. 20. Tickets are on sale now.

The concert series is brought to the Island’s stage by Bradenton Area Arts & Culture, Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages and The Sandbar. Proceeds from the shows at The Center go to benefit the nonprofit, supporting community programs on Anna Maria Island.
