Football weather fuels Center sports

ANNA MARIA – The winter chill kept the 8- to 10-year-old players from taking the field last week, but the older kids and adults battled it out during a slight break in the weather.

On Monday night, the Sato Real Estate team only allowed Sandhoff Construction to score eight points in the 20-8 game. Quarterback Blake Bower threw the touchdown pass to Grady Sandhoff for six points. The additional two points came from a David Evans sack in the Sato Real Estate end zone for the safety.

QB Brandon Sato dominated the game statistics on offense and defense for the Sato Real Estate team. Ashton Bennet was Sato’s target for a touchdown and two single point-after conversions.

Sato ran for a TD and intercepted a Bower pass for a pick-six, helping lead his team to victory. Defensively, the Sato team had 15 recorded flag pulls compared to the six defensive stops by the Sandhoff squad.

Team Shady Lady could not take advantage of the 10 catches made by Stone Mitchell in their loss to Moss Builders. With the final score of 39-6, the arms of Mason Moss and Austin Guess just could not be stopped.

Renan Kesten caught the three scoring passes by Moss and Guess. The receiving statistics for the Moss Builders team speak volumes about the depth of the team. Putting two additional points on the scoreboard were Guess and Bryson Frady, scoring a one-point conversion.

Working as a receiver, Guess had six catches in the game, while Kesten nabbed five of Moss’ throws. Teammates added five additional catches totaling 17 compared to 11 by the Shady Lady Horticultural Services team.

Shady Lady showed their potential with a throw from Charlie Neri to Stone Mitchell for the six points in week two action.

Team Jiffy Lube defeated Solid Rock Air Conditioning 15-6 in a closer matchup. Kyle Mims hit Carson Long for the touchdown and six points for Solid Rock.

Luke VanDuinen, playing for Jiffy Lube, threw to Braelyn Curtis and Callin Westfall for 12 points. Curtis sacked the Solid Rock QB in the end zone resulting in two points for Jiffy Lube.

Adding a point for Jiffy, Tyler Trout caught a VanDuinen throw for a successful point after a touchdown to help with the team win.

Poppos Taqueria and Salty Printing played a tough game, ending with Salty coming out on top 13-7. Tyler Higman found Grayson Cohen for Poppos in the week two loss. Teammate Sawyer Leibfried found the end zone, adding a point to the scoreboard.

Quarterback Jahkari Steele made the difference in the game for Salty Printing, throwing a touchdown pass to Turner Worth and intercepting the Poppos quarterback for a six-point run back after the turnover.

Securing an extra point in the game, Asher Patel was Steele’s go-to to help secure the W.

The teens and adults took to the gridiron last week with victory posted in the statistics for Cortez Florida Vacations, Moss Builders and Solid Rock Air Conditioning.

Playing back-to-back nights last week, the adults go into weeks 5 and 6 this week again with games on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The Center kicks off fall soccer

The Center kicks off fall soccer

ANNA MARIA – Thursday night heated up as the adult fall soccer league started with five back-to-back games. With two more teams this season, the schedule is compressed to let roughly 100 Island-area men and women hit the pitch for the nine weeks of games leading to the playoffs in late November.

Veteran player and team captain Greg Ross led his team to victory over team Bubble Binz with a score of 4-2. Ross played alongside his twin sons, Andrew and Jake Ross, on the Ross Built Custom Homes squad.

While not credited for a goal, G. Ross struck hard and struck often, finding his sweet spot on the field. Jake and Andrew each had a goal, adding to the two points put up by Jack Gibson.

In an uncharacteristic position at goal, Kevin Roman made five important stops off the boots of the Bubble Binz offense. Osvaldo Cabello protected the goal for team Bubble Binz, making six saves after two halves of soccer action.

Cabello’s teammates James Knowles and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos scored the goals for Bubble Binz, helping to keep the team in the first game of the season.

AMI Dolphin Tours and Language Services Associates took to the pitch next. Ending in a 3-3 draw, each team recorded seven saves after 40 minutes of regulation play.

Making the saves was Julian Bejarano for team Language Services. AMI Dolphin Tours split the duty between Tyler Bekkerus, with three big stops, and Aaron Frech, with four stops. Frech took over in goal after Bekkerus left the field with an injury.

Scoring for AMI Dolphin Tours were Robert Fellowes, Erica Nielsen and Frech. On the other side of the field, Luis Martinez, Alex Quintero and Juan Rodriguez put the points on the scoreboard.

Team Pool America dominated in the third game of the night against Gulf Drive Café. Pool America’s Chris Klotz and Gulf Drive’s Charles “Tuna” McCracken each had 10 saves in the game.

Four all-important goals got past McCracken for his team’s 5-1 loss. McCracken is credited with the assist on Gulf Drive Café’s only point, scored by Javier Rivera.

On the other side of the field, Murat Akay and Lucas Wilson each put two past McCracken, while Dean Hinterstoisser had a solo goal in the team’s win.

The Sato Real Estate goalies Josh and Ben Sato were kept busy making eight and nine saves, respectively. Their counterpart, Steve Oelfke, made five recorded stops in his team’s three-goal win.

Offensively and defensively strong, the Hampton Painting team held Sato Real Estate to two goals by Logan O’Brien and team captain J. Sato. Hampton’s captain, Daniel Hampton, scored two goals, along with Tim Holly. Their teammate Ethan Hampton scored his first goal of the season against the Sato defense.

Ending the night with a big win, Solid Rock Construction beat the Moss Builders team 5-2. Ryan Moss’ eight saves, in addition to goalie efforts by Karri Stephens with two stops, just was not enough against Keith Mahoney’s team.

Led by James Roadman, the Moss Builders team managed to score two goals against Solid Rock with strikes by Stephen Adair and Alexis Bellamy.

Playing in her second game of the night, Nielsen scored another goal. Julio Cantu got one by the Moss Builders’ keeper.

With the only hat trick of the game, Mahoney scored three of the team’s five points to close out week one of adult soccer on the Island.

Center summer sports kick off

Center summer sports kick off

ANNA MARIA – The gymnasium at The Center of Anna Maria Island was filled with excitement as the summer sports season started on the Island last Tuesday night. Getting out of the heat, youth indoor soccer kicked off the season on the inside pitch while the adults heated up the field with flag football action.

The youngest players, ages 3-7, played scrimmages as part of their developmental work with the older kids playing in head-to-head matches. Four of the five 8- to 10-year-old league teams played with Shady Lady Horticultural Services sitting out the first week.

Team Positive Waves beat the Progressive Cabinetry team by three goals. With the final score at 5-2, Ryan Greenberg had the hot foot for the Positive Waves squad. Hitting three shots, Greenberg’s scoring was joined by solo goals by Sebastian Cordova and Silas Whitehead.

In the win, Parker Svoboda was credited with an assist. Goalie Kellen Reed had five saves in the game against the Progressive Cabinetry offense.

Assists by Jackson Griffin, Ellison Maynard and Rafa Price helped keep the Progressive team in the game for two halves of fast-paced action.

With an arsenal of shots coming their way, Wesley Bekkerus worked hard, successfully saving seven of the Positive Wave shots in the first half of the game. Griffin relieved Bekkerus, making 11 nice stops.

Ending the second game in a tie, teams Gulf Drive Café and Solid Rock Construction each scored 10 points in their first game of the indoor season. Gulf Drive’s points were scored by Dallas Biggers, Joseph Caballero and Leo Burns, with six, three and a single goal, respectively.

Game statistics note two assists by Biggers and three for Burns.

Both teams put two goalkeepers in goal during the tied ballgame. On the Gulf Drive side, Everett Hood made nine saves and Titus Moss stopped eight shots. Solid Rock’s Elijah Roadman had 13 strong stops, while Carson Long saved six shots on goal.

Solid Rock’s scoring came off the boots of two players. Samuel Raulerson scored his solo goal. Teammate Matthew Darak used his skills and the boards to put nine points on the scoreboard.

With only four teams, the teams will get to know their competition well. Week one play matched up Jiffy Lube and AMI Outfitters. Finishing the game in another tie, each team scored eight goals.

Jiffy Lube’s Callin Westfall scored half of the points for his team. Hudson West and Gunnar Maize split the remaining four goals. Assist credits went to Maize with three and West with a single.

Putting three players at the net, Jiffy Lube’s Nolan Anderson had five stops, while Parker Svoboda made three and Maize saved one. AMI Outfitters followed suit with their five-person defensive attack in goal.

Sharing the responsibility, Jordan Tobey led the pack with six saves in the game. With three stops, Grayson Cohen helped his team with the 8-8 tie. Mackenzie Cohen, Mackenna Darak and Maggie Neidzwick each had a single save in the final game of the night.

Offensively, Wes Saxon scored six points. G. Cohen got the soccer ball past the goalie once, along with Matthew Darak, each claiming one point. Assisting with the scoring for AMI Outfitters, G. Cohen was credited with two passes that led to the successful shot.

Matthew Darak and Neidzwick each had assists in the game, adding to their game accomplishments.

In what looks to prove to be an exciting adult co-ed flag football season, eight teams took to the gridiron last Thursday night. The four high-scoring games showed the skills of the players this season.

Team Floridian Mortgage earned a win against Moss Builders 26-25. Also scoring 26 points, Fishing with Salty beat the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team by five points in the second game of the season.

Prosper Bradenton beat Salty Printing 27-25. The Salty team played without their quarterback, Charles “Tuna” McCracken. In the week’s blowout, Solid Rock Electrical scored 41 points against team Slim’s Place. Slim’s Place finished the game by putting 25 points on the board, ending week one flag football action on the Island.

Coaches vote league’s best

ANNA MARIA – The winter flag football playoffs started and the youth league award winners were announced last week. With the coaches’ votes in, 10 well-deserved players heard their names announced on The Center’s field.

Playing in last week’s opening game, AMI Coconuts’ Camden Rudacille, the league’s winner of the sportsmanship award, proved he is not only one of the best-spirited players in the league but also a skilled baller.

With one touchdown catch and a two-point conversion on offense, Rudacille also had a strong defensive game against the Moss Builders team, including six flag pulls and an interception.

Teammate Adelaide McGraw and Cheesecake Cutie’s Gunner Maize earned the offensive most valuable player honors for the 8- to 10-year-old league.

Despite the team’s loss against top-ranked Moss Builders, McGraw had a strong game with one reception and a big defensive stop.

In the third game of the night, MVP Maize’s team dominated the Beach House Waterfront Restaurant team, winning 33-0. The Cheesecake Cutie standout once again showed why he is deserving of the title, with 21 points, including a touchdown reception, a rushing score and a pick-six.

On the other side of the football, Beach House’s Aiden Guess, winner of the defensive MVP votes, had three flag pulls against the Cuties offense.

Team Adrian Griffin Interiors advanced to the semifinals with a win against Chick-fil-A. The league’s most improved player, Silas DeWitt, playing for the victors, finished the game with five catches, including one for six points and three big defensive stops.

Sato Real Estate won the second game of the night against Solid Rock Construction by 20 points in the defensive battle.

In the older youth league, Solid Rock Electrical’s Estella Long lit up the gridiron as the MVP against team HSH Design. Long had four catches and scored six points. On the other side of the football, Long stopped the HSH offense with seven flag pulls.

The league’s most improved player, Van Harvell, playing for Solid Rock Air Conditioning, helped his team to their narrow victory against Progressive Cabinetry. In the two-point game, Harvell scored a touchdown and made five big flag pulls in the night’s second match-up.

Team Wings N Things could not advance to the next round of the playoffs, despite having two of the honored players in the league. The Shady Lady Horticultural Services team was just too strong, holding Ryk Kesten, the defensive most valuable player, to one TD and five flag pulls.

Sportsmanship award recipient Charlee Maize caught two passes, pulled eight flags to stop forward progress and sacked the Shady Lady QB.

Closing out last week’s youth flag football play, team Moss Builders solidly won against team Freckled Fin. With the final score 52-8, Mason Moss put up numbers that echoed his season accomplishments which earned him the coaches’ votes for MVP.

Scoring two rushing touchdowns and catching for another six, Moss also had two interceptions, including taking one down the field to score.

Moss clearly showed his dominance both on offense and defense, finishing the game with a flag pull and one-point conversion to end last week’s youth play.

This week’s youth flag football action started on Monday with team Sato Real Estate facing the Cheesecake Cutie team, as well as the 8- to 10-year-old Moss Builders team taking on Adrian Griffin Interiors.

On Tuesday, the older Moss Builders team played Solid Rock Electric while Solid Rock Air Conditioning opposed the Shady Lady Horticultural Services squad in semifinal action.

Youth soccer teams hit stride

ANNA MARIA – The Center’s youth soccer leagues completed week five of recreational sports last week with five hard-fought games. In the first game Tuesday night, The Porch narrowly defeated team AMI Coconuts 3-2, in the 8- to 10-year-old league.

It was the first win of the season for The Porch while their opponents played this week also looking for their first victory.

The Porch’s Titus Moss had two goals and an assist, while teammate Luke Willing shot one goal and passed the soccer ball to Moss on one of his successful strikes.

The team’s offensive charge was led by Beau Canup and Simon Messinger, each with one goal in the match.

With Adrian Griffin Interiors off with a bye week, Isola Bella Italian Eatery matched up against the undefeated Moss Builders. Keeping their record unblemished after four games, the Moss team outscored team Isola Bella by one goal, 3-2.

Asher Patel’s hot foot scored the two goals for his team, keeping them in the game. Teammate Trinity Miller worked hard to protect the Isola Bella Italian Eatery team goal. Miller had four stops against the Moss Builders offense.

Striking hard was Gunner Maize with two goals. Parker Svoboda scored a solo goal, helping the Moss Builders team go into week six playing one game ahead of the Solid Rock Construction team.

Keeping Isola Bella to two points, Miles Moss had seven saves for the Moss squad.

Matthew Darak’s hat trick was no match for the La Creperie team. Despite tough play and eight saves by La Creperie goalie Sawyer Leibfried, the team could not make enough shots to win.

Solid Rock goalie Carson Long made eight critical stops for his team. Louis Bacon scored the only point for La Creperie, leaving the team with a 1-2-2 record.

In the 11- to 13-year-old youth soccer league, the other Solid Rock Construction team held on to second place with the 6-3 win against The Gitt Team/KW on the Water.

Luke Dellenger scored three goals in the game, while teammates Turner Worth and David Zupa shot for two goals and a single respectively.

Sharing the goalkeeping duties for Solid Rock was Jack Zaccagnino with five saves, denying The Gitt Team offense during his time at the net, and Obi Roadman with a big stop.

Despite the loss, The Gitt Team never stopped fighting for position on the field and the shot. Leading the offensive scoring was Callin Westfall with two goals.

Ryk Kesten scored a goal for his team. Austin Guess is credited with three nice saves against the Solid Rock shooters.

Also with a 6-3 final score, team Cheesecake Cutie defeated HSH Design. Cecelia Kroth scored two points for HSH. Sterling Holiday got past Cheesecake goalie Thomas Holly with a goal of his own.

Banks Home Lending Team gets first W

Banks Home Lending Team gets first W

ANNA MARIA – In the blazing heat of the Fourth of July week weather, the adult co-ed flag football league played last Thursday night pushing past mid-season match-ups.

In the final game of the night, The Banks Home Lending Team earned their first win against the Solid Rock Construction team with a final score of 46-29. Favored to finish the game victorious, Solid Rock’s mistakes paved the way for their opponent.

After four games, three teams are in the middle of the pack with 2-2-0 records. Teams Sandbar Seafood & Spirits, Cortez Deep Sea Fishing and Salty Printing all go into Thursday night’s games hoping to break away.

The three teams are chasing The Moss Builders team. Their win against the Salty Printing squad puts the team ranked second just under Luxury Services.

Luxury Services easily won against Gulf Drive Café, winning by 17 points. Both team’s quarterbacks showed impressive cool under pressure under the beating sun.

With four touchdown passes, team captain and Luxury Services QB outthrew Gulf Drives’ quarterback, Dominick Otteni, by one TD throw. Richardson kept the ball for himself on a touchdown run for six points, while Otteni played on defense with two key flag pulls.

Otteni’s scoring targets last Thursday night were Dallas Buchholz, with six points in the game, and Jacob Ferda, scoring two TDs from six game catches in addition to five defensive stops.

Despite strong defensive play with two interceptions for the Gulf Drive team by Meghan Mitchell and Kiatrell Zachery, and a QB sack by Steven Pavina, the squad just could not make it click on offense.

Off the arm of Richardson, Tim Holly and Alonzo Lemus each found the endzone twice for 24 points. Holly was Richardson’s main game target with 12 catches. Lemus followed close with eight receptions of his own.

In addition to Richardson’s running score, Holly raced into the endzone for six more Luxury Services points. He is also credited with getting to Otteni in time to snag his flag before the football left the QB’s hand.

Holly and his teammates worked to keep their team undefeated going into week five play.

Coming off their loss against Luxury Services, Gulf Drive Café hopes to improve on their 1-3-0 record.

With regular season play to continue for a few more weeks, three teams sit at the bottom of the rankings hoping to position themselves for playoffs. Gulf Drive Café shares the single win record with The Banks Home Lending Team and Solid Rock Construction.

Gulf Drive faces Solid Rock this Thursday at 7 p.m. while The Banks Home Lending Team plays team Moss Builders in the last game of the night.

Kicking off the flag football action this week, Salty Printing hopes to improve its record against the Sandbar team. The 8 p.m. game has current top seed Luxury Services defending their undefeated record against the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad.

Luxury Services and Moss Builders lead the pack

ANNA MARIA – Adult flag football and youth indoor soccer play continued at The Center last week. In the second week of play, two teams rose to the top of the pack.

Luxury Services and Moss Builders look to be the teams to beat this season going into week three play undefeated. Luxury Services had an easy time against the Sandbar Seafood & Spirits crew last Thursday night, winning by 16 points.

In the defensive battle royale, eight total interceptions were recorded in the statistics between both teams, along with more than 25 flag pulls. Leading in the defensive stops for Luxury Services was Derrick Carey with seven pulls.

Jonathan Soultatos, a member of last season’s championship team, along with teammate Ramon Guerrero IV had four flag pulls each, helping the team total 15 stops during the two halves of play.

The wheels of Tim Holly allowed him to get to the Sandbar quarterback with three sacks in the game. On the other side of the football, Soultatos got to the QB once for a big stop.

For the offense and the win, Luxury Services quarterback Chase Richardson hit Alonzo Lemus three times for touchdowns. Two-point conversions by Richardson and Lemus, along with a sack for a safety by Holly, gave the Luxury team 30 points and the win.

Despite the loss, Sandbar scored two touchdowns and Guerrero made a two-point conversion. TDs by Soultatos and Zachary Routh helped to keep the team in the game, but it just was not enough.

In game two Thursday night, Gulf Drive Café dominated the field on both offense and defense against The Banks Home Lending Team with the final score of 41-15. Dominick Otteni threw for four touchdowns and had a rushing TD of his own to help lead his team to the win.

Otteni’s scoring targets were Dallas Buchholz, Jacob Ferda, Steven Pavina and Kiatrell Zachery. Pavina scored for Gulf Drive while on defense, while Zachery, Ferda and Otteni added to the points after conversions.

The Banks Home Lending Team managed to get 15 points up in lights thanks to two nice throws by Cruz Rodriguez leading to 12 points by Juan Vega and Joseph Vigil. Don Uffinger is credited with a sack leading to a safety for two points.

Contributing to the team’s scoring, Sequiel Marintez scored a one-point conversion for The Banks Home Lending Team.

The third game in the adult flag football league was a nailbiter. Salty Printing eked out the win by three points against Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. Zaon Williams led the Salty team with three passing touchdowns and six points on his feet rushing into the end zone.

Joey Carder, Jose Perez and Brandon Rolland each put up six points with nice catches for touchdowns. Andrew Procter scored three critical conversion points in the game, helping to give his team the win.

Scoring his own one-point conversion, Rolland had seven points in the game, with two catches and one flag pull.

Despite the strong efforts of the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad, the win eluded them. Matt Manger and Anthony Mannino shared the QB duties. Mannino threw for one TD and scored on a reception from Manger. While playing defense, Mannino was credited with a flag pull, interception and a defensive touchdown.

Flipping roles, Mannino threw a touchdown pass to Manger. Other targets of the night for touchdowns were Johnny Sevier and Jesse Skipper. Skipper found himself in the endzone causing a sack and safety.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cortez Deep Sea Fishing squad, Anthony McCance contributed with a one-point conversion.

In the final game of the night, QB Tuna McCracken just could not find one more scoring opportunity for the Solid Rock Construction team, losing to Moss Builders 20-14.

Despite finding Connor Ludwig and Evelyn Long open for scoring passes and one-point conversions by both, Moss Builders made it into the end zone one more time than Solid Rock.

Veteran player Ryan Moss threw for three touchdowns, hitting cousin Greg Moss twice and Isaiah Lambert once for three touchdowns. G. Moss and Lambert each had a single interception in the game.

Moss rounded out his statistics with a two-point conversion to help the Moss Builders team capture its second win, remaining undefeated along with Luxury Services heading into week three play this Thursday night at The Center.

ANNA MARIA – With all three soccer leagues winding down at The Center, the championship games are in sight for the youth and adult Island ballers.

Last Tuesday night the number one and two seed teams in the 8- to 10-year-old league had a bye week as their reward for finishing the regular season on top. The Cheesecake Cutie team finished number one with 15 points in the season and a 5-1-0 record.

The Sato Real Estate squad came in a close second with 12 points and four wins in the six-game regular season.

Four scorers put up the points for team Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control last week to put the team into the next round of playoffs. Wesley Bekkerus, Madeline Kimmons, Maggie Niedzwick and Callin Westfall each made a goal against AMI Coconuts goalkeeper Andre Harwood.

The Westfall offense kept Harwood on his toes during the first-round playoff game, making 10 saves in the match. In the opposite goal, Westfall is credited with a save, along with teammate Kason Price’s seven stops.

Scoring the lone goal for AMI Coconuts, TJ Hagey and his teammates could not get past their opponents’ defense and find the net.

Westfall’s Lawn Care took on Sato Real Estate Monday in the first youth semifinal game. In the second game this past Monday, Cheesecake Cutie played team Island Real Estate, the winner of the second quarterfinal game last week.

In post-regulation time penalty kicks, Island Real Estate secured the second semifinal slot, winning against Solid Rock Construction.

Before the PKs, each team scored a single goal. Solid Rock’s Matthew Darak and Island Real Estate’s Preston LaPensee took the teams to a kickoff to determine who played the Cheesecake squad.

With seven and eight saves respectively, goalies Isaac Roadman, for Solid Rock Construction, and Miles Moss, for Island Real Estate, helped secure the overtime play.

Solid Rock Construction’s Elijah Roadman made the only PK for his team. Under the pressure of overtime play, Owen Mahoney and Jordy Perez each made their penalty kicks, helping to secure Island Real Estate’s place in the semifinals.

The winners of the league go head-to-head on May 23 at 6 p.m. in the final game of the season.

The 11- to 13-year-old teams finished their regular season games last week with Gulf Drive Café defeating Shady Lady Horticultural Services 4-3 and HSH Designs winning over Moss Builders 5-2.

Monday night the Gulf Drive team was scheduled to play team Shady Lady in the semifinals. The other semifinal matchup put HSH Designs against Moss Builders to determine the championship game scheduled for May 23 at 7 p.m.

Adult co-ed soccer semifinal play last Thursday night saw the second seed Pool America winning by one goal against the eighth seed Moss Builders.

In the second game of the night, Vintage Beach, ranked seventh, beat the third seed Sandbar Seafood & Spirits 6-3.

The Paul “Ace” Hayward championship game is scheduled for Thursday night at The Center to end another season of soccer on the Island.

Young soccer competitors eye playoffs at The Center

ANNA MARIA – With fall youth soccer past mid-season, the coaches and players are looking toward playoffs and strengthening their records going into week 5 action.

LaPensee Plumbing and Island Real Estate are on top of the ranks for the U10 league with nearly identical records, with the win going to LaPensee last Tuesday night.

The 2-1 win against Island Real Estate put LaPensee Plumbing’s record to 3-0-1, while Island Real Estate’s record moved to 3-1-0. In the win, TJ Hagey and Preston LaPensee put the points up for their team.

Island Real Estate’s consistent striker and top scorer of the league, Callin Westfall, scored his team’s only goal, while Vincent Gollamudi continued to impress in goal with two critical saves.

Owen Mahoney worked his magic as the keeper for LaPensee Plumbing with three saves in the game.

In the second U10 game of the night, team Cloud Pest Control searched for their first win of the season, but the hot foot of Brandon Sato proved to be too much for the Cloud defense.

Scoring a hat trick with three goals in the game, Sato was the top scorer of the week. His brother, Dylan Sato, added a goal to the game statistics, giving him seven goals in the season.

Gunnar Maize prevented two Cloud Pest Control points with nice saves in the game to help his team to victory.

In a shutout, Solid Rock Construction won the last U10 game of the night against AMI Coconuts with a score of 2-0. Renan Kesten and Mathew Darak each had a goal for Solid Rock.

Goalkeeper Riley Karecki made four big saves against the Solid Rock Construction offense to help keep the AMI Coconuts squad in the game.

The U14 league is dominated by the undefeated HSH team. Winning against the Mac Parkman squad by two goals gave HSH a 3-0-1 record.

Scoring by Sterling Holiday, Krosby Lamison and Jayden Sparks for HSH and a solo goal by Ryk Kesten closed out the youth soccer action at The Center of Anna Maria Island for the week.

With three regular season games left to play, the title of champion is still up for grabs in the Island’s youth soccer leagues.

U6 family fun closes out season

ANNA MARIA – After an action-packed summer in The Center of Anna Maria Island’s gymnasium, the youth indoor soccer season came to a close last Tuesday night with the parents teaming up against the littlest ballers in the league.

Teams Cloud Pest Control and Wash Family Construction combined talents to verse the parents in a fun game of indoor soccer on one hard pitch while the Sandbar Restaurant and Mac Parkman Foundation teams came together against their parents.

Coaches Karri Stephens, Jillian Ptak and Brooke Svoboda not only played against their talented and enthusiastic players, but also cheered them on in the all-for-fun season-ending games.

Using the skills learned during the season each week, nearly half of the players will be moving on to the bigger indoor pitch next indoor soccer season, aging out of the U6 league.

The summer season finishes with players in U13, U9 and U6 leagues having enjoyed the fast-paced fun of indoor soccer.

The Center looks forward to starting its first season on the reconditioned outdoor fields to start the fall sports season. The players of the summer sport will take some of what they learned during the past two months onto the grass pitches during the next soccer season.

ANNA MARIA – Youth indoor soccer action at The Center passed the regular season midpoint last week with overwhelmingly dominant leads in the U9 and U13 leagues.

U9’s Ugly Grouper had a big 16-2 win with the strikes of Beau Sanson and Landon Leach, with a hat trick. Sanson scored 13 points in the new form of play, which includes no goalie on the pitch.

Leach also was credited with two assists, along with three critical passes leading to the goal by Silas Whitehead.

On the other side of the ball, Bridgetender Inn’s Paul ten Haaf put two strikes in the net, with an assist by Parker Suoboda. The team’s loss puts their season record at 1-3.

In more U9 action, Blalock Walters and Solid Rock Construction finished last week tied in the middle of the pack with 2-2 records. In week four play, the Solid Rock team beat Blalock Walters by two goals, 3-1.

Matthew Darak and Isaac Roadman were the scoring pair for Solid Rock. Darak put two in and Roadman had a single goal in the all-important, season-tying game.

Olivia Wyatt prevented the shutout with a solo goal in game four.

The 12-2 blowout by Progressive Cabinetry in the U13 league was a true team effort, with four of the five players scoring and three players credited with assists.

With four goals, Barrett Raina topped the week’s scoring chart. Teammates Jackson Wyatt and Alonso Valle both had hat tricks in addition to the two goals by Mattox Caseman.

Caseman and Valle each had single assists in the lopsided match-up. Progressive Cabinetry’s Ethan Angel made two critical assists in the victory.

Freckled Fin’s loss was not without a valiant effort by the entire team. Chandler McRae and Briahna Robertson each put points on the scoreboard, with an assist by Tucker McRae.

Team Shady Lady and Freckled Fin share the bottom rung of the league’s ranking going into week five of the season.

Shady Lady kept it a close game against Moss Builders, now with a 2-2 record. Moss Builders’ win came at the skillful feet of Callin Westfall, Mason Moss and Riley Karecki.

With two goals each in the game, Moss and Westfall continue to consistently score for their team. Westfall also had a recorded assist for the Moss Builders team.

Spreading out the scoring for Shady Lady, Amelia Blunkall, Braelyn Curtis, Alex Monserrate and Jesse Zaccagnino each scored one of the four team goals. Assisting with the scoring for Shady Lady was Ava Mason.

Progressive Cabinetry goes into week five undefeated. Can the team finish the week with another win against Moss Builders with just one more week left before playoffs?

Beach Bums, WTBL end season as champions

Beach Bums, WTBL end season as champions

ANNA MARIA – The rain delay the previous week gave four teams additional time to plan their strategy for the semifinal adult flag football games last Thursday night. In a nail-biter, WTBL narrowly won against TBT with the final score 27-26. In a game that came down to a failed extra point conversion by TBT, the WTBL squad moved on to face a worthy opponent in team Moss Builders.

The Moss Builders team, led by Ryan Moss, defeated the Solid Rock Construction squad by five points, without the sure hands and speed of Jesse Griffin. Their win in the semifinal matchup put Moss in his third flag football final game this season as either a coach or player.

What was anticipated to be a close game ended in a 20-point win by the less experienced, younger squad. Putting the pressure on QB Moss was key to the team’s win, with two sacks by Daniel O’Connor and a single by Tyler Brewer.

The heat on the quarterback forced throws and caused one interception by WTBL’s Brandon Kull. Kull had two receiving touchdowns in the game in addition to his interception.

WTBL teammates Julia King, Dominick Otteni and Jaret Rojas each had a touchdown catch in the championship game to give their team 18 points. Rojas and Brewer helped to seal the deal each with points after conversions.

On the passing side of the game, Otteni had the top statistics of the game with four completed touchdown passes. Rojas, serving as QB, threw for six.

Moss Builders’ quarterback was down critical players in the big game. Missing some of his key targets, JB Shuck and Brandon Holcomb became the marks for Moss’ missiles.

Shuck had eight catches for positive yardage and a touchdown. The football hit the hands of Holcomb twice and once for six points.

The defense of WTBL and the skeleton roster widened the scoring gap as the game clock ticked down to the final 31 seconds on the scoreboard clock. In the classic Moss sportsmanship way, the game was called with time on the clock, with the final score 32-12 and WTBL champions.

In The Center’s gym, adult indoor soccer playoff action kicked off, with the Beach Bums team finishing on top against Gulfview Windows & Doors in the championship game.

Gulfview made it to the Big Show after beating Sato Real Estate in semifinal action in a close game. Beach Bums took the victory against Slim’s Place by three goals, putting the team in the final against Gulfview.

In the final game of the night at The Center, Gulfview continued to fight until the last second, but the scoring powerhouse of Beach Bums team was just too much.

Gulfview’s Mark Long and Luca Vecchio each had hat tricks for their team. Julian Rodriguez, Keith Mahoney, and Raul Loera scored a total of five points for their team. Despite this and the 17 total goals saved by Long, Mahoney and Loera, the Gulfview Windows & Doors team could not capture the win.

Lucky Durmaz finished the top scorer of the game with six goals for Beach Bums. Kevin Roman and Mauro Vecchio scored five goals each, with an additional two by teammate David Noval.

Osvaldo Cabello protected the net for his team, making 14 stops for Beach Bums. Vecchio is credited for two saves in the game, along with a save.

After a crazy season of indoor soccer games and forfeits, the season ended with an action-packed final game with Beach Bums champions.

Big kids play the field: Fall adult soccer season kicks off

The adult co-ed fall soccer season is underway with the first kickoff between Sato Real Estate and a new sponsor with team Vintage Beach led by team captain Joseph Hutchison.

The game looked like it would be a runaway by Josh Sato’s Sato Real Estate. The Center’s Sports Program Coordinator, Tim Holly, scored the first goal of the season to put Sato’s team up on the scoreboard early.

Holly, who grew up playing sports at the Island’s community center as a youth, was also credited with his own goal, giving Vintage Beach momentum after the 4-0 run by Sato Real Estate.

With additional points on the board by Sato, Nate Talucci, two by newcomer Race Aranda and a hat trick by veteran and top pick female player Amy Ivin, Sato Real Estate eked out the victory with the final score 7-6.

Vintage Beach’s captain had three goals of his own, along with two by league rookie Zach Reda and a solo net shot by Juan Alvarez.

Sato Real Estate’s Olaf Krause was credited with 11 saves as the team’s keeper. Meanwhile on the other side of the field, Vintage spread the defensive duties at goal between Hutchison, Clancy Vaughn, Reda and Cole Peterson, each with saves in the record book.

Ross Built Construction finished their first game of the season looking like one of the teams to beat against team Vacasa.

Vacasa playing without their starting goalkeeper, Trey Horne, Ross Built’s Lexi Sato and Damir Glavan both had three goals in the game, with Kevin Roman finding the net twice and team captain Greg Ross putting up a point of his own. Sato’s goals came in the first five minutes of the game.

Goalie Mark Rudacille stopped 11 shots against him by the Vacasa crew. Captain Stetson Mathews shot a goal for his Vacasa team, along with single goals by Nick Bouchard, Jessica Williams and Lyn Clarke.

The Center’s Associate Director, Connor Haughey, was credited with two goals and two assists in the game for Vacasa, with back-up goalie David Greene making 12 saves in the game.

The strong offensive work by Ross Built Construction gave the team the win with the score 9-6.

The third game of the night was a runaway encounter with Moss Builders coming out on top with seven goals in the game. Keith Mahoney, team captain, had a hat trick to be matched by teammate Gerardo Urbiola. Moss Builders co-owner, Ryan Moss, put up a goal of his own.

The strong Moss Builders’ defense kept the soccer ball away from their goalkeeper, Jordan DeMers, limiting his need to make saves. His eight saves and two misses, with goals by Lancaster Designs’ Miguel Ajoy and Drew Jacobsen, gave Moss Builders the win with the score 7-2.

League favorite Rico Beissert played goalie for Lancaster Designs. Beissert showed everyone why he is just as strong protecting the house, with 14 saves, as he is on the open field.

The standout squad sponsored by Blalock Walters took the final win of the night against team MuniPlan. The team, with a new sponsor to the center, held their own against a faster squad, ending the game with the score 4-2.

Ben Sato and Sean Flynn shared the goalkeeper position for MuniPlan, with nine and six saves, respectively. Flynn was the first to score for his team, to be followed late in the game by a net shot by Nathan Kragt.

League newbie Luke Grady made 11 saves for Blalock Walters to be supported with goals by captain Matt Staggs, Robbie Fellowes and Brooke Capparelli, who also grew up playing sports at The Center for years.

With a bye week, Flynn Law has yet to show everyone their potential in a season that looks to be well-matched leading up to the championship game on Dec. 19.

Adult co-ed sports up the challenge

As the youth indoor soccer season moves to a close, the adults take to the indoor gridiron for the first time in years at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Meanwhile, the big kids also continue to play the adult co-ed soccer league, playing the third week of the summer season.

The top of the rankings on the gridiron have four of the six teams with tied records of two wins and a single loss. Teams Lancaster Design, Progressive Cabinetry, Moss Builders and Gulfview Windows and Doors share position at the top of the heap with more than half the season still to play.

Team Hasmark Sports lost in a close one against Gulfview, taking its record to 1-2. Still seeking its first win, Team Ugly Grouper played a tough game against another veteran squad in Lancaster Design.

In the game against Team Ugly Grouper, Lancaster Designs’ Anthony Mannino grabbed the catch for three touchdown receptions, along with two touchdowns for teammate Karri Stephens. With his solid hands, Jay Hoffmeister added critical three extra points in the game.

Ugly Grouper’s Anthony McCance and Sirkevius Williams both put points on the scoreboard in the game, but their efforts just were not enough to overcome the other team.

Team captain Ryan Moss threw for four passing touchdowns, as well as caught a touchdown of his own in the second game last Thursday night for Gulfview Windows and Doors. Tyler Lancaster, Brandin Holcomb and Jordan DeMers all had scoring receptions of their own, assisting in their team’s win.

In the loss, Hashmark Sports’ Chase Richardson and Corey Banks put six points on the board, with follow-up point-afters by Octavious Cole.

Ray Gardner led his team to another victory with two passing throws that lead to touchdowns and two end-zone victory dances in Moss Builders’ win against Progressive Cabinetry.

Gardner’s teammates, Mike Gillum and Jon Moss, took the football to the end zone in the game, scoring 32 points between the three of them. The team’s scoring was topped with an extra point conversion by Chad Woods, who had three catches in the game.

Despite the loss, Progressive Cabinetry had three players who put up points – Ben Sato, Skylar Sostack and Jaret Rojas.

Facing the small nets and the boards in the Island’s gymnasium, the adults started the indoor soccer season with six games going head-to-head. With scores that look like American football scores, the fast-paced game had the yellow indoor soccer balls whizzing by the goalies.

Progressive Cabinetry spread the scoring among all six players on the team’s roster. In addition to their goals, Ryley Moore, Diego Felipe and Steve Oelfke had goalie stats of their own with critical saves.

Team captain Keith Mahoney scored five goals for his team, along with scores by Jose Urbiola Bolanos and Jason Chiofalo. Chiofalo had 10 saves in the game in addition to the eight saves by Freddy Lenhert in the team’s effort.

Goalie Robb Marshall’s 14 saves just were not enough for Slim’s Place in its fight against Moss Builders. Lexi Sato, Teddy Louloudes and Jose Casaras put the ball in the net past Moss Builder’s goalie Omar Polar.

Juan Carlos, with five goals for Moss Builders, added to the six total goals by Miguel Ajoy and Anil Akbulut for their team’s win.

Team Ugly Grouper, led by Chris Klotz, squeaked by Sato Real Estate in the final indoor game of the night. Klotz had eight saves and two goals in the night. John Haggerty stopped nine strikes and had a goal of his own.

Grouper’s Olaf Krause took it to the net twice, and Yuri Pereira put on the heat with his four goals and the team’s win.

Josh Sato, Adam Bujarski, Ryan Moss and Mark Rudacille put up a total of seven goals in the game, with four saves by Moss and five by Rudacille to end the night of adult indoor soccer.

With the youth indoor soccer league finishing with the championship games this week, the adults will supply the sports action for the rest of the summer at The Center.
