With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard “Boston,” J. Burnes Jr., 66, of Anna Maria, Florida, on April 7, 2026.
He is survived by Andrea Burnes; his sons, Jonathon, Richard III and Benjamin; his wife Melissa; and his grandchildren, Theodore and Samuel. He is also remembered by his sister, Jeanmarie, his brothers, Shawn and Michael, and his wife, Kathy; along with many extended family members, including aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean “Mutzy” and Richard “Bun” Burnes, and his brother, Joseph.
Ricky grew up in Massachusetts, where he attended Quincy High School and played football. Over the years, he remained active and competitive, participating in rugby and candlepin bowling. He found enjoyment in fishing, playing chess and supporting his sons as a youth soccer coach. He was also an enthusiastic reader, especially drawn to novels by Stephen King.
He dedicated much of his working life to the United States Postal Service, living in Quincy, and later Falmouth, before eventually relocating to Florida.
In Anna Maria, he embraced a relaxed coastal lifestyle and formed many meaningful friendships.
While in Florida, Rick found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed cooking at the Anna Maria General Store, spending time on the golf course, riding his bike and taking his beloved dachshund, Camo, to the dog park. Rick followed horse racing with interest and enjoyed attending races when he could. He continued to follow his Boston sports teams and he rarely missed the chance to catch a game. He was also known for never missing an episode of The Price Is Right – a reflection of his easygoing nature and appreciation for everyday routines.
Ricky had a deep love for dogs, especially his dachshunds Rocky, Apollo and Camo, who brought him constant companionship and happiness.
A celebration of life, laughter and memories will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the Anna Maria General store, at 503 Pine Ave. in Anna Maria.
The celebration will then shift to D Coy Ducks, at 5410 Marina Drive in Holmes Beach, where at approximately 4 p.m., shots of Fireball will be raised in Boston’s honor as the Kentucky Derby watch party held in tribute to him gets underway.
