ANNA MARIA – Carl Augostini’s Christmas tradition is repairing and restoring donated bicycles to give to underprivileged youngsters.

Augostini, a retired electrical engineer, spends many hours in the garage of his Anna Maria home resurrecting the donated bikes that bring holiday joy to those who receive them.

Many of this year’s bikes were donated by Phil Fifield, who helps with the “Bike Ministry” at the Bayside Community Church in west Bradenton.

“They collect bikes from around the county and give them to people coming out of prison and to homeless people. They rarely have calls for children’s bikes so Phil gives them to me,” Augostini said on Friday, Dec. 12.

Augostini spoke while waiting for Devine Landscapes and Lawn Maintenance owner David Daniels to arrive with the pickup truck and trailer he uses to deliver the bikes to the Light of the World church in Sarasota where he is a member.

Augostini usually keeps the restored bikes in his garage, but this year’s gift-ready bikes were kept in a storage container at Custom Carts in Bradenton, owned by Kurt Didier.

“As I worked on them, he picked them up and put them in the storage container for me,” Augostini said.

“We’ve known Carl for 20 years,” Didier said. “He does repairs and works on chargers for us. We wanted to help Carl and his great cause.”

The annual bike retrieval day is a family affair and Carl’s youngest son, Craig, Craig’s wife, Lisa, Carl’s daughter, Carla, and Carla’s husband, Derek Dobbertin, help load the bikes into Daniels’ trailer. This year, they were joined by Carl’s older brother, Bill Augostini, a Columbus, Ohio resident who’s spending the winter in Florida.

“We’ve got 51 bikes and four scooters. This is a record for me,” Carl Augostini said. “All of them are for kids between the age of 12 and 2 or 3 years old.”

This year’s collection included “Paw Patrol,” “Barbie,” “Pinkalicious” and “Hello Kitty” bikes and some bikes came with helmets too.

“I love to see kids get bicycles. I want to get them off the iPads and off the phones and get out there and get that exercise and enjoy a bike ride. That’s why I do it,” Augostini said.

Last year, Augostini had to restore several bikes twice after Hurricane Helene’s storm surge soaked the bikes’ moving parts in corrosive saltwater.

“Everything went smoothly this year,” he said.

Light of the World Pastor Peter Greenidge helped Daniels retrieve the bikes.

“To see a man who is 87 years of age continuing to do this wonderful ministry of providing bicycles for the kids is awesome,” Greenidge said. “These bikes will be given away tomorrow at our Christmas Extravaganza. I want to express our gratitude to Carl for the wonderful work he’s done and the families he’s helped.”

Daniels, who spent a couple of seasons in the NFL as a receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, said, “I do this because I believe kids should have gifts at Christmastime – and one thing you must have as a kid is a bicycle, so you’re not watching the other kids riding their bikes and you don’t have one. We appreciate Carl doing this and to see the smiles on their faces when they receive these bicycles is priceless.”

ANNA MARIA – Each year, Anna Maria resident Carl Augostini restores discarded bikes and donates them to a Sarasota church to give away during the Christmas holiday.

This year, Augostini restored and donated 35 children’s bikes and three adult bikes to the Light of the World Sarasota church. Augostini, a retired electrical engineer, restored an additional 20 adult bikes this year. The first 10 bikes were donated and delivered to a halfway house that assists former jail inmates. Delivered later, the additional 10 bikes were donated to a church that assists the homeless. Former Island resident Dave Huggins assisted Augostini with those deliveries.

Augostini has been at this for at least 13 years and many years ago, Roser Memorial Community Church employee Charles Wade connected him with The Light of the World church.

On Dec. 13, Light of the World church volunteer David Daniels, his son, D.J. Daniels and family friend Elijah Pantophlet arrived at Augostini’s Anna Maria home in two pickup trucks, each towing a trailer to be filled with donated bikes.

David Daniels, the owner of Devine Design Landscaping and Maintenance, said, “We knew we needed two trailers this year because last year we barely stuffed them into one trailer.”

Augostini’s adult children, Craig and Carla, and their spouses, Lisa Augostini and Derek Dobbertin, were also on hand to help load the trailers.

“This is the most I ever had,” Augostini said.

“That’s a lot of bikes,” Craig added.

Two of the childrens’ bikes featured “Barbie” paint schemes and one of the childrens’ bikes featured a “Hot Wheels” paint theme, with a noise-making RPM gauge attached to the handlebars.

When asked why he does this, Augostini said, “I like to see kids have bicycles. It gets them away from their iPhones and iPads and gets them out there getting some exercise and doing things kids should be doing.”

Augostini spends many hours each year restoring the bikes donated to him and this year he had to restore most of them a second time after they were partially submerged in the hurricane-related saltwater storm surge that intruded the ground-level garage of his elevated home.

“Most of them were done and the sprockets all froze up and I had to redo them,” he explained.

“During Hurricane Helene, I lost the garden, the yard and all the plants. There was a lot of water in the garage and I lost a lot of tools and bike parts. They were rusted and the saltwater ate right through them. Milton took a lot of siding off the house and took a lot of soffit out. It took the ceiling above the deck and a few shingles and gutters but Craig is very handy and we put most of it back together.”

Bayside Church in west Bradenton provided Augostini with several bikes to restore.

“They have a program where they donate bikes to homeless people and people coming out of jail but they can’t use the children’s bikes. That’s why I have so many this year. I hope these kids enjoy the bikes and I’m sure they will. I just love to see kids outside riding their bikes,” Augostini said.

His annual efforts come with a cost: “It’s not cheap. The cost of tires and parts has gone out of sight. A tire for an adult bike used to be $5 to $10 and now they’re $15 to $20.”

Before loading the trailers, David Daniels shared a story that illustrates the importance of a bike to a kid. He said a young boy who wanted a donated bike last year didn’t get one. But despite his disappointment, the boy told Daniels that was OK.

“It touched my heart,” Daniels said. “I told his mom I was sorry we didn’t have any more bikes. I asked for their address and the next day I bought a bike and a helmet at Walmart and delivered it to their house and they were so thankful.”

When assessing this year’s donation, Daniels said, “These bikes are gorgeous. You have to have a heart to do this. You have to love kids and understand what a bicycle means to a kid.”

The donated bikes were given away the following day at the Light of the World church’s annual Community Christmas Extravaganza.

“We usually have about 100-150 families come out. We have other gifts from different places but the bike is like the ultimate prize. The joy is when you see the kids get the bike. Just to see the smiles on their face. Some parents can’t afford a bike and a bike is like a gift from heaven,” Daniels said.

ANNA MARIA – During each Christmas season, Anna Maria resident Carl Augostini, 85, provides bikes for underprivileged children and adults in need.

“This year, I did a total of 36 bikes – a new record for me, thanks to a lot of friends and neighbors who donated them from the Island and Bradenton,” Augostini said. “Eight adult bikes went to halfway houses in Sarasota, distributed by a close friend who lives there. Two bikes went to a needy family in Bradenton for Christmas. The 26 remaining bikes went to Pastor Greenidge and Charles Wade, with 18 bikes for adults and teenagers and eight bikes for children under 10 years old.”

“My son, Craig, helped me out,” Augostini said. “He did some deliveries for me and helped me clean the bikes up when they were pulled out of storage. He also helped with minor repairs during clean-up that were missed during the build phase. He has been a great supporter and helps me out whenever I need strength to do something.”

When asked why he does this, Augostini said, “There are several reasons. To begin with, I came from a poor family and we struggled to get a bike, not only for fun but for work and everything in between. If a family cannot afford a bike for their child, I will try to get one for them. I believe it gets them off the couch, away from their iPad, iPhone, etc., and outside for exercise and a healthier environment, making them stronger individuals and making for a better generation to come.

“Another reason I do it is because it’s a hobby for me. It keeps my mind active and keeps me out of trouble. It is unbelievable what I have learned by rebuilding bikes – the tricks of the trade. I see something different on almost every bike. I am a retired electrical engineer and this is all mechanical, but it is a challenge and I love a challenge,” Augostini said.

Augostini has been doing his annual bike restorations and gift presentations for 13 years or so. In 2020, his charitable efforts earned him the city of Anna Maria’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year award.

“If I am healthy, I will continue to build bikes for kids for Christmas. Hopefully, they will appreciate the bikes and become a better generation,” he said.

ANNA MARIA – Resident Carl Augostini believes every kid should have a bike and each Christmas season he donates refurbished bikes to the Light of the World International Church in Sarasota.

Charles Wade serves as the facility manager at Roser Memorial Community Church in Anna Maria and is a member of the Light of the World International Church. Every Christmas season, Wade helps ensure the delivery and distribution of the bikes Augostini refurbishes.

“We did 10 adult bikes and six children’s bikes this year,” Augostini said, noting that number was a little lower than usual due to the loss of Roberta, his wife of 59 years, in November.

On average he said he refurbishes about 20 bikes a year.

“Both my kids, Craig and Carla, have been very helpful in getting the bikes ready,” Augostini said. “I gave five bikes to a halfway house in Sarasota this summer to help those guys out.”

Pastor Peter Greenidge picked up the refurbished Christmas bikes on Dec. 14. The bikes were then distributed to children and adults at the church on Dec. 17-18.

“We enjoy helping out the kids and helping the church,” Wade said.

Augostini, a retired Xerox electrical engineer, has lived in Anna Maria for the past 25 years. He began his charitable bike refurbishing efforts about 13 years ago.

“I was rebuilding bikes for neighbors and I started accumulating bikes. I had taken care of all my neighbors and I had extra bikes one year. I asked Mike Selby, who was mayor at the time, if he knew anybody that I could give the refurbished bikes to who could distribute them to a charity. He gave me Charles Wade’s phone number and that’s how it started,” Augostini explained.

In 2020, those efforts resulted in Augostini being named the city of Anna Maria’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

When asked why he does this, the 84-year-old said, “I have the time and it’s a hobby for me. I think every young kid should have a bike growing up to get them out of the house and away from their cellphones, iPods, computers and all that. Most of the bikes come from junk piles that I pick up along the street when somebody throws them out. And a lot of people know I do this and they’ll bring bikes to me and leave them sitting in front of my garage doors. I already have close to 30 bikes ready to be refurbished for next year.”

ANNA MARIA – Carl Augostini thinks every kid should have a bike, and he spends his own time and money trying to make that happen.

Each year, Augostini and Charles Wade team up to provide bikes to local kids and adults in need.

Augostini repairs and refurbishes the bikes, and Wade helps put the bikes into the hands of those who want and need them. Wade is the facilities administrator for Roser Memorial Community Church in Anna Maria.

On Friday, 25 bicycles stood in Augostini’s driveway waiting to be picked up.

“We’ve got 13 adult bikes and we have 12 children’s bikes,” Augostini said.

Augostini was asked where the bikes came from.

“The junk pile. My friends and neighbors drop them off and I take them and rebuild them. I start in January, right after Christmas, and I work all year on them. I’ve got a pile of old ones now waiting to get refurbished,” he said.

When asked why he does this, Augostini said, “Because I think every kid should have a bike. And if they can’t afford it, I’m one of the guys that’s going to get them one.”

Augostini, a retired electrical engineer, said he had no particular affiliation to bicycles when he started this project several years ago. He said he met Wade about 10 years ago, when then-Mayor Mike Selby put the two men in touch with one another.

“I had a bunch of bikes and I asked Mike how I could donate them to somebody. He gave me Charles’ name. I contacted Charles and he finds a home for them each year,” Augostini said.

“The church I go to, Light of the World, is picking them up today and we’re going to have a big Christmas event in Sarasota on Saturday for the kids – and for adults who may need bicycles to get around and get to work. It’s all about giving,” Wade said.

“We’ve been doing this for 10 or 11 years. I got involved because I love helping people, giving and doing the things God allows me to do. Carl is the bike man. I watch him and tell him he’s very talented at what he does. He usually has 15 bicycles, but this year it was 25,” Wade said.

Wade said one of the Light of the World pastors told him the need for bicycles is even greater this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic challenges the pandemic has created.

“There’s so many kids wanting bicycles whose parents lost their jobs or some other situation happened. If we can get bicycles to them, that’s a beautiful thing,” Wade said.

Augostini expressed his thanks to all who helped make this year’s bike donation possible.

“I want to thank all my neighbors and friends that drop off the bikes, and I’ve got some donations to help pay for tires and tubes, which have gone up in price, and parts that I need. A lot of the parts I take from bikes that are unrepairable. I thank all those people that have been a great help,” Augostini said.

He also thanked his wife for her neverending support of his efforts.

“My wife, Roberta, keeps me going,” Augostini said, noting he already has approximately 30 bikes to use for next year’s project.

The couple’s son, Craig Augostini, and Craig’s wife, Lisa, were also on hand Friday. They live in Rochester, New York and are visiting for the holidays.

“He’s an inspiration,” Craig Augostini said of his father. “He’s something else. He’s a fantastic guy. My sister and I look to him as the greatest. We always had bikes and he taught me how to fix my bikes, mini-bikes, motorcycles and cars. I’m very mechanical, just like him.”
