Center youth soccer season underway

ANNA MARIA – Three weeks into the spring adult co-ed recreational soccer league, the kids hit The Center’s pitches for fun-filled games on April 3.

As the youth sports program continues to grow to historic participation numbers and beyond, the energy at the Island’s community center on kids’ soccer nights is contagious. The two 3- to 4-year-old leagues have 20 little players being taught the game by volunteer coaches Lee Dickson and Emily Bekkerus.

Bekkerus’ team, Emily Moss Design, will face coach Dickson’s Cloud Pest Control squad throughout the season, learning more about soccer each week and growing friendships on the field.

While not keeping score, the focus is on the fun of the game while learning how to perform a throw-in, dribble the soccer ball down the field and make passes to teammates.

Continuing to play without counting the goals, the six teams playing in the 5- to 7-year-old league have over 60 little ballers battling each week on the soccer field while learning skills and getting touches on the ball.

With an emphasis on learning the sport and gaining a love for the game, the six volunteer coaches also teach sportsmanship, respect, integrity and teamwork.

Coach Bekkerus takes on two instructional-level teams this season, leading the second team in the 5- to 7-year-old age group with team MI-BOX. Back again this season, Karri Stephens guides the Beach Bums crew.

Coach David Moss brings his family’s athletic skill to team Blenker Boatworks, while Michael Nick finds time in his schedule to coach the youngest Sandbar-sponsored team this season.

Rounding out the league, Jessica Patel steps up to the plate to coach the Ugly Grouper team as Jesse Griffin continues his time as a volunteer coach to lead the Adrian Griffin Interiors squad this season.

Without volunteer coaches, youth sports would not be possible. The phrase “It takes a village” could not be truer than in community center kids’ activities and recreational sports.

As mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and family friends take the time to coach the Island kids, the spring youth soccer program is headed toward another successful season at The Center of Anna Maria Island.

ANNA MARIA – On the beautiful fall night at The Center, players, friends, family and referees all came together for a night of soccer, grateful to have been spared by Hurricane Ian. Even though the action on the pitch was a bit overshadowed by non-stop conversations of gratefulness on the sidelines and in the stands, the eight adult soccer teams played hard-fought battles.

In the first game last Thursday night, Joey Hutchinson had the hot foot for Slim’s Place. Scoring six of the nine goals in the game for his team, Hutchinson also made an assist in the team’s 9-6 win against Pool America.

Kris Yavalar, for Pool America, lit up the scoreboard scoring the first goal of the game, finishing with four goals and an assist. Yavalar and Hutchinson worked for position on the field throughout the match-up, ending with Hutchinson doubling his scoring record for the season.

At the end of week three, Hutchinson leads the scoring in the league with a total of 12 points and three assists.

Slim’s Place scored three additional goals with a single by Eliza Faillace and two by Eric Pullen. Early in the game, Pullen sailed his strikes over the crossbar. Making the necessary adjustments, Pullen moved into third for scoring. With five goals, Pullen is tied with four other players in the scoring ranks. Amy Ivin, Kevin Roman, Keith Mahoney and Yavalar each closed out the third week of play with five goals.

For Pool America, Gerardo Urbiola Bolano put up two points in the loss. These are the first two points of the season for Bolano.

In the goal, Jack Goodier was credited with two saves in the game. Goodier was relieved by Pool America teammate and captain Chris Klotz, who had an injury in the game. 

Slim’s Place’s P.J. Smargisso made critical saves for his team. Making six stops in the game helped his team to victory.

Ties and close scoring action was the name of the game for the rest of the night. Wash Family Construction tied Servis 1st Bank in game two. The third game of the night ended in a tie between Moss Builders and Sato Real Estate.

Wash Family Construction’s Kevin Roman had a hat trick in the game, while Yuri Pereira made three saves for Servis.

Pereira’s teammates put five goals on the scoreboard with solo goals by Luca Vecchio and Juan Carlo Perez.

Servis 1st Bank’s Ugur “Lucky” Durmaz matched Roman’s hat trick with three goals of his own.

In the keeper position, Mark Long made eight critical saves in the game for Wash Family, keeping them in the game.

Tyler Brewer’s two goals helped to get the Wash Family team to the tie.

Saving 11 shots, Ryan Moss kept the shooting power of Sato Real Estate to six goals. Moss’ team, Moss Builders, made their six shots count, with six points scored in the tie-ending game.

For Moss Builders scoring, Damir Glavan had four goals, with an additional two by Daniel Hampton and Jessica Williams.

Sato Real Estate’s points came at the foot of Danny Anderson with a hat trick and two by Lindsey Styka. Teammate Pedro Gonzalez added a goal in the 6-6 game.

Ending the night, Ross Built Construction matched up against Gulfview Windows & Doors. Gulfview eked out the win with two goals, scored by captain Keith Mahoney and Raul Loera.

In the 2-1 game, Gulfview’s goalie Tuna McCracken supported his team defensively with seven big stops in the game. Steve Oelfke made five critical saves. 

Avoiding the goose egg, off an assist by Raul Castano, Eduardo Schlueter scored Ross Builts’ only goal in the game.

After three games, Slim’s Place is on top with a 3-0-0 record. With more than half the season left to play, can the Slim’s crew stay on top?

The final week of the regular season for the adult soccer league at The Center of Anna Maria Island played out last week with Ross Built Construction taking the win against Vintage Beach in the first game of the night last Thursday, Dec. 5.

Second-seeded Sato Real Estate dominated the pitch against Flynn Law, who was missing key players. Top female league scorer and second overall in the league at just four goals short of first, Amy Ivin, put four goals into the record books along with an assist in the game.

Ivin started the scoring early finding the net twice in the first 10 minutes of the match up giving Sato Real Estate a 2-0 lead.

With five minutes left in the first half of the game, Ivin finds Race Aranda ready to score, advancing the point deficit for Flynn Law with the score 3-0.

Flynn Law looked to be on fire and ready for a second-half come back with a quick goal by Danny Anderson, made possible by an assist by his wife Gina Anderson, against a Sato squad that did not look quick ready for action.

The scoreboard showed a 3-1 Sato Real Estate lead with 15 minutes left in the game when D. Anderson’s corner kick met the feet of Zachary Lieb for the second Flynn Law goal of the game, moving the score to 4-2.

Aranda moved down the field past Goalie of the Year Robb Marshall, for Flynn Law, with 90 saves in the regular season. Aranda found Ivin open allowing her to score her third goal of the game.

Both Ivin and team captain Josh Sato hit the net for Sato Real Estate points and Lieb scored again for the Flynn Law team.

With the score 6-3 with very little time left in the game, Conrado Gomez hit his solo goal, giving his team, Sato Real Estate, a five-point lead.

In the final seconds of the game, Nate Talucci scored the final goal of the game for Sato Real Estate to end the game with the score 8-3.

Top seed Block Walters will face Vacasa, who clinched their first win of the season against Lancaster Design Thursday night. With the loss, Lancaster Design’s season ended.

Sato Real Estate matches up against seventh seed Moss Builders and fourth seed Ross Built Construction hits the field with Flynn Law, finishing fifth in the regular season.

League high scorer and team captain Joey Hutchinson takes his Vintage Beach team into the playoffs against sixth seed Team MuniPlan.

The semifinal round of playoff games are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. with the championship game to follow on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.

This summer’s indoor soccer action at The Center includes two skill levels and age group divisions: Intermediate (five- to nine-year-old) and Advanced (10- to 14-year-old).

In the first game of the third week of play, the intermediate teams of Moss Builders and Island Vacation Properties faced each other in 40 minutes of rapid-fire action.

Dylan Sato started the play for Moss Builders. Immediately, Maddie Kimmons showed what a defensive powerhouse she is for Island Vacation Properties.

Sato brother Brandon made a nice reaching attempt to stop the soccer ball, but just could not quite get to it.

Six minutes into the game, Moss Builder’s Jackson Titen made a nice shot attempt. Teammate Mason Moss hit a rocket shot that was stopped by Kimmons, playing by the net.

Sato made a shot attempt that went just right of the post seven minutes later.

Island Vacation Properties made a great run down the field before being stopped by Moss.

With three minutes left on the scoreboard, Moss made another shot attempt, finding Kimmons away from the goal.

Despite what looked to be domination on the field by Moss Builders, the first half of play ended with the score 0-0.

Island Vacation Properties started the second half play. Camden Rudacille made a nice pass down the line. Kimmons was caught off guard allowing the first Moss Builders’ goal.

Implementing the three-line rule, teammates are required to touch a long pass before it crosses the third critical line down the court.

After a near own-goal by Moss Builders, Brandon Sato shot the Moss team’s second goal of the game. Moss followed two minutes later with another ball in the net, pushing the score to 3-0.

The Moss Builders team put its fourth goal on the board less than three minutes later.

Miles Moss worked with his team on the court allowing big brother Mason a clear shot over everyone’s heads for the team’s fifth goal.

Mason Moss hit another perfect shot for the final point of the match with a little more than four minutes left in the game, to end with the score 6-0.

Getting out of the heat of the summer, The Center’s gym is filled with soccer enthusiasts to play and watch indoor soccer Island style. With the Ross Built Construction boards up and the stage occupied by fans and players, the fuzzy yellow soccer ball whizzed across the court last Tuesday night.

Team Ugly Grouper matched up against Team AMI Locals in a game that ended in a tie after 40 minutes of fast-paced action.

The scoring started with a goal by Savanah Coba for AMI Locals just one minute into play. The team quickly took possession of the soccer ball to put another shot into the net, giving AMI Locals a two-point lead.

Without goalies in the game, the defense in the indoor soccer league has to play tough to protect its house. Both teams effectively utilized one player as a quasi-goalie, unable to use their hands in play.

Jayden Sparks scored a goal for Ugly Grouper putting the score to 2-1.

Coba took a nice shot only to be stopped by Jack Whiteside, Ugly Grouper’s goalie.

Newly added player Carsyn Deligans, visiting the Island for the season, showed the players and spectators she is a force to be reckoned with on the indoor soccer arena with the first of three goals in the game.

Utilizing their feet, heads and the walls, the two advanced teams fought hard for possession and position. The score moved closer after an own goal for AMI Locals.

With the score 3-2, a one-point lead for AMI Locals, the game headed into half time.

AMI Locals started the second half of play with a kickback to a defensive teammate. Evan Talucci, with Team AMI Locals, showed why he was named Goalie of the Year in the previous soccer season – this time playing without the use of his hands.

Will Wright scored his first goal of the game with Talucci just a little too far away from the net.

An accidental handball by Team Ugly Grouper allowed a direct penalty kick by Jack Harrison to hit the net and tie the game at 4-4.

Deligans scored another goal, once again giving her team the lead. Angelina Albrecht tried to close the gap with a shot saved by Talucci.

With 10 minutes left on the scoreboard clock, Albrecht took another shot, this time against Deligans who blocked the shot.

A minute later, Ugly Grouper tied it back up. Dalton Fox took the soccer ball down the court until there was one man to beat. Fox took the shot and scored for AMI Locals.

Jackson Long brought the game back to an even score, getting a strike past Talucci.

Albrecht and Long worked together, using the boards to move the ball into scoring position. Victor Albrecht took his own shot that went just right of the post.

Hoping to regain the lead and end the game with a win, Deligans showed an incomparable hustle and skilled footwork.

Deligans’ first shot sailed right of the post. Her next shot was blocked by Whiteside. As the clocked ticked down, Whiteside maintained the tie for his team with another save on the Deligans strike, ending the game with the score 6-6.

The last game of the regular season last Wednesday night, June 19, was just the beginning of the dominating soccer play by Team Jiffy Lube. In a shocking defeat against the number one ranked team, Gulfview Windows and Doors, Danny Anderson’s Jiffy Lube squad paved its way to the quarterfinal games to be played Thursday night.

Despite its nearly flawless record, Gulfview, lead by Ryan Moss, could only put one goal on the scoreboard.

Jiffy Lube started quick out of the gates with the one-two punch of Anderson and Omar Polar. Anderson’s pass to Polar was right on the money, allowing Polar to hammer the shot less than five minutes into the game.

Three minutes later, Anderson got his first goal after several shots were taken and saved by Gulfview goalkeeper Jordan DeMers, who was credited with nine saves in the game.

Veteran player Ed Moss scored the one and only point for his son’s team in the ninth minute of play, taking the score to 2-1.

Flawless play by Jiffy Lube and unforced errors by Gulfview allowed Anderson to hit the net for the second time in the game.

With a two-goal lead, the game became a defensive battle leading up to the half. Jiffy Lube keeper Robb Marshall worked hard to keep the soccer ball out of his net with eight saves in the game.

To start the second half of play, Ricky Anderson scored his team’s fourth goal only to be followed by another goal by teammate Anil Akbulut, advancing the score to 5-1.

Moss took over in goal, putting DeMers on the field. Jiffy Lube’s Eliza Falliace took her shot only to be saved by R. Moss.

Taking the ball the full length of the pitch at The Center, D. Anderson found a scoring opportunity and took the shot for his team’s sixth goal.

Falliace took another shot against R. Moss that went just left of the post. R. Anderson fired a cannon that was just over the crossbar.

With less than eight minutes left in the game, Falliace hit the net for a goal of her own, widening the Jiffy Lube lead with a score of 7-1 to finish the game.

In a season with 10 teams, wild card games between the bottom four teams had to be played to determine the quarterfinal contenders. Moss Builders, lead by Diego Felipe, took the field against defending champions Sato Real Estate with team captain Josh Sato.

After 50 minutes of play, the regulation play ended with the score of 3-3, leading to a shootout. Sato Real Estate came out on top despite rocket shots by Amy Ivin and Jake Parsons. Goalkeeper Jason Sato’s skillful saves gave his brother’s team the opportunity to finish on top critical goals by Josh Sato, Murat Akay, and Steve Wertovitch.

The last quarterfinal game played Thursday night ended in another nailbiter. Once again, fifth seed Team Jiffy Lube prevailed, but this time in a shoot out after regulation play ended with the score 3-3 against the fourth seed Blalock Walters squad.

Missed shots by Matt Plumber and Stephen Perry, against Jiffy Lube keeper Sean Flynn, cost the team of lawyers the game. The netted shots by Greg DeMeuse and Matt Staggs just were not enough against the skillful strikes of O. Polar, Emily Taylor, R. Anderson and D. Anderson. Blalock goalie Scott Rudacille’s agility and talent just was not enough Thursday night.

The stage is set for this Thursday’s semifinal match-ups and the championship game. Gulfview Windows and Doors will face Jiffy Lube June 27 at 6 p.m., while Flynn Law will take on Beach House Real Estate at 7 p.m. The championship game for the Paul “Ace” Hayward cup will be played at 8:30 p.m. with the winners of the two earlier games to end another season of adult co-ed soccer at The Center.

Heading into the second half of the regular season of the adult co-ed soccer season, Gulfview Windows and Doors, led by Ryan Moss, remains the only undefeated team in the league. Still looking for a win is the team sponsored by Moss Builders and Beach House Real Estate. The game of the week saw Blalock Walters battle against Ross Built Construction.

Playing with his son Jake Ross, Greg Ross’ team took the win. Playing without Stephen Perry, the Blalock team could not match up against the solid Ross squad. Taking the early lead after two minutes of play, Matt Staggs for Blalock Walters, could not stop a rocket shot by Chris Klotz to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Staggs scored another goal for the team of lawyers to move the score to 2-1.

Big man Chris Chicaro made his way toward the goal and stuck hard and fast for the second Ross Built Construction goal. With two goals each, team captain G. Ross made the first of two goals to give his team the lead for the first time of night. Showing his missile strikes, Vince Chicaro, brother of Chris, made the first of three goals in the 12th minute of the game, advancing the score to 2-4. With plenty of energy and talent on the field, the Blalock Walters team continued to fight back.

Two minutes after the Chicaro goal, a fight for possession ensued in front of the Ross Built goal. Blalock’s Greg DeMeuse finally found the ball at his feet to make the third goal for his team. Down by one point, team Blalock Walters successfully fought on defense for the remainder of the first half of the game, leaving the score at 3-4 as the teams left the field for a much-needed water break and halftime strategy session.

After more than 11 minutes of play without a standout play or a goal, J. Ross, a sophomore at Florida State University, scored his first goal of the season with an on the ground shot that whizzed right by Blalock goalkeeper Scott Rudacille. Rudacille finished the game with seven saves, while back up Ross Built goalie Max Gazzo had six documented saves of his own. With cross-field rocket shot that hit the right corner of the net, V. Chicaro made his second goal of the night giving Ross Built Construction a two-goal lead. Two minutes later, V. Chicaro got his hat trick increasing his team’s scoring dominance with the score 3-6. Blalock Walters fought back with a near perfect shot by Matt Plummer that went just inches over the crossbar. Staggs took a shot of his own that went just right of the post.

With three minutes left on the scoreboard, G. Ross got his second point, giving his team a four-point lead. Plummer got his goal with 23 seconds showing on the board, put Gazzo on the ground for the save attempt. Finishing the game on the referee’s clock V. Chicaro struck and hit the net again with an unrecorded goal, and the official score of 4-8 and another win for Ross Built Construction.

Thursday night May 9 the defending adult co-ed soccer champions, Sato Real Estate, took to The Center of Anna Maria Island field against a tough Jiffy Lube team looking for their first win of the season. Off to a rough start, Josh Sato’s team lost their number two draft pick Joe Jones to a torn Achilles tendon only to be replaced by Zachary Lieb, a top choice any season.

With Lieb and two strong female teammates, Alta Bujarski and Sumiko Chipman, the purple team looked to be on their way to another tied ballgame, but in the high scoring game, Sato Real Estate earned their first win of the season.

Goalkeeper Jason Sato, older brother to Josh, was kept busy in the net with nine saves in the night. At the opposite end of the field, now veteran goalie Robb Marshall had eight saves of his own.

Jiffy Lube’s Ricky Anderson started the scoring action after four minutes of play giving his brother’s team an early lead.

A quick shot by Chipman missed the target but started the shooting effort by Sato Real Estate. R. Anderson made another strike at the net that was saved by Jason Sato.

Sato Real Estate’s Lyn Clarke showed why he is still a force to be reckoned on the pitch at the age of 79 with three goals in the game. Finding the perfect open position by the opponent’s net in a league with no offsides rule, Clarke scored his first goal of the evening, tying the game 1-1.

In the eighth minute of the game, team captain Josh Sato dribbled the soccer ball all the way down the pitch. Feeling the defenders coming strong, Sato passed to Murat Akay who gave it back to his captain for the shot and goal, giving his team the lead 1-2.

On the next possession, Lieb took a hard shot that went off the right post. Chipman struck again with a scoring attempt that was saved by Marshall.

With less than 10 minutes left in the first half of play, the soccer ball was batted around in front of the Sato Real Estate goal before Jiffy Lube’s Nick Bolli found his foot on the ball for the strike and goal, once again tying the game with the score at 2-2.

Three minutes later, Jiffy Lube moved the ball down the field with precision with passes from team captain Danny Anderson to Omar Polar to be finished by Stetson Mathews for the team’s third goal of the game.

With the score at 3-2, D. Anderson put the ball to the feet of Eliza Falliace. Fighting for possession, Mathews kicked the soccer ball out of bounds giving Sato Real Estate the goal kick.

On an unlucky goal kick by Jason Sato, D. Anderson got the ball right in the middle of the field to just outside of the goalie box. Giving D. Anderson this opportunity is almost always guaranteed goal. Not disappointing their fans, Team Jiffy Lube put another point on the scoreboard to go ahead by two goals with the score at 4-2.

Chipman found a clear field ahead and took the ball to the left corner of the Jiffy Lube box before passing to Akay. Akay’s shot went right into the hands of Marshall for the save.

To start the last 25 minutes of play Akay had two consecutive goals to tie the game to tie the score 4-4.

Unable to handle the strike by Chipman, Team Sato Real Estate once again took the lead on the Marshall mishap, moving the score to 4-5 with 14:35 left on the clock.

The Sato Real Estate squad moved the ball down the field again and finished with another goal by Clarke 90 seconds later.

Team Jiffy Lube came back with a goal of their own with a strong pass by Polar to Falliace in front of the goal. Falliace took advantage of her position with a missile that would have gone in the net but was assisted by Anil Akbulut to take the score to 5-6.

Holding on to the lead, Josh Sato, sporting two different cleats, worked hard to move the ball on the field, getting it to Lieb. Lieb’s strike was stopped by Sean Flynn who was now in goal for Team Jiffy Lube.

Clarke’s next shot was stopped near the close of the game. Team Sato Real Estate took its seventh goal in the game and the win by two points.

No bumming around at the Beach Bums soccer clinic

With their little boots tied, shin guards on, sporting their Beach Bums soccer jerseys, six-and seven-year-old Island area kids took to the small field last Wednesday night in The Center’s soccer clinic.

Lead by coach Thomas Philpott, now-veteran players like Maggie Sue Niedzwick, Dylan and Brandon Sato, and Camden Rudacille participate this spring in the oldest age group training sessions before eventually moving on to the big field.

Other players in this season’s soccer clinic include Giuliana Bankert, Braylen Briggs, Preston Brighenti, Patrick Burnette, Sophia Kerr, Kinsley Roehl, Sophia Travis, Polea Vacek, Evita Moyer, Brennan Rygiel and Lexi Baugher.

After working the drills, the kiddos took their skills into a scrimmage game. Dribbling the soccer ball past defenders, striking the ball for the shot and playing the right position were just a few of the important fundamentals taught in the clinic.

As these players move on playing Island soccer, they will progress to games where the score and statistics are kept, but the fun and love of the game remains.

Sato Real Estate to defend title

The Center of Anna Maria Island field saw six games of co-ed, adult soccer last week as the eight teams went head-to-head in the fall season’s playoffs games. In the end, top-ranked Sato Real Estate captured two wins in the week, solidifying the team’s place in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game Thursday night.

The pitch lights were on Tuesday night for the quarterfinal games. The cold night thinned out the crowd, but the faithful fans of futbol stayed to watch the closest match of the night between Moss Builders and AMI Locals.

After extra play in overtime, the two teams selected each of their best five shot makers to battle it out in penalty kicks. Fourth-ranked Moss Builders prevailed, winning the game by one goal. The win moved Ryan Moss’ Moss Builders into the semi-final action.

Jiffy Lube, Lancaster Design and Sato Real Estate also played Thursday night to determine the final play lineup.

With four teams vying for one of the two final spots, Moss Builders’ Adam Bujarski was the only man in a blue jersey that could find the net. Goalie Jordan DeMers solidly protected his net making 11 saves on the night, but their efforts just were not enough against Kris Yavalar’s Lancaster Design.

On the other side of the field, last season’s Sato Real Estate key player, Zachary Lieb, put in two goals to help his new team, Lancaster Design, clinch a spot in the cup game.

Lieb’s teammates Cemal Duzgan and Ryan Hogan contributed with their all-important points in the game for the win.

Sato Real Estate’s Trey Horne solidified his place as one of the league’s top goalies with 13 recorded saves. Horne’s team did not have an easy go of its semifinal game against Jiffy Lube. The battle royale put the #1 and #2 teams against each other one last time in the season.

Team captain Danny Anderson scored two of the team’s four points. Brother Ricky had one of his own. Frontman Brayan Felipe had a solo goal as well.

But the goals of Josh Sato, team captain, two goals by Andrew Schmidt and singles by Francisco Oliviera and Eric Pullen gave Sato Real Estate the win by one goal in overtime.

Sato Real Estate’s narrow victory gives the team a chance to repeat last season’s success and continue to reign as champions. Yavalar looks to put another championship under his name Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. at The Center.

The last regular season co-ed adult soccer game ended Thursday night with Lancaster Design pulling out the big win over Jiffy Lube.

After Moss Builders took the first victory of the night over Eason Builders, Slim’s Place earned its first win of the season against a winless Ross Built Construction.

Sato Real Estate handed AMI Locals its third loss of the season. Playing with a demanding defensive attack lead by Alta Bujarski, Sato Real Estate’s Andrew Schmidt lead the team out of the gate with a beautiful shot.

Matthew Staggs took the second score statistic, advancing the score to 2-0 two minutes into the game.

Team captain Kevin Roman hit the net next for his team, AMI Locals. Schmidt followed up with his second point of the game with 17 minutes left in the half.

Tyler Robinson, Roman’s teammate of the sponsored AMI Locals, brought the game to a one-point spread with the score 3-2.

The third game of the night ended with a goal by Chris Culhane, taking the score to 4-2.

Danny Anderson, the leader of Jiffy Lube, started the last game with a bang, scoring within the first few minutes of the game.

Anderson’s brother Ricky put the second point on the scoreboard, and teammate Nathan Kragt scored the third goal with 10 minutes left in the half.

Just as it looked like Jiffy Lube was going to run away with the game, Lancaster Design’s team woke up and started its scoring streak at the 17th minute by Zackary Lieb.

Right before the end of the first half of the game, D. Anderson struck the soccer ball for the teams fourth and final goal of the night.

At the very start of the last 23 minutes of play, Lancaster Design came out scoring. Lieb scored the next two goals tying the ball game 4-4.

With a tie looking to be the destiny for the match, Lieb put his team head and gave it the win with a little over five minutes left on the clock.

The second round of the playoffs will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13.

Planet Stone, Bins Be Clean, Sato Real Estate on top

In the final week of the youth soccer regular season, Planet Stone finished in first place for the youngsters making up the eight- to 10-year-old league. Bins Be Clean found them on top for the 11- to 13-year-old league.

Both teams clinched a spot in the championship match on Wed., Nov. 14. Neither will know who their opponents will be until the semifinal play is completed at the 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. games that same night.

Planet Stone went head-to-head against Ugly Grouper last Tuesday night to start the evening’s action.

Ugly Grouper’s Cale Rudacille scored the only goal of the first game of the night for the eight- to 10-year-old youth soccer league in their victory against number one ranked Planet Stone.

Planet Stone stayed on the field for the week’s second game against Progressive Cabinetry. Despite having just played the previous game, the Planet Stone team still showed fire in its boots, taking the win with a goal at the 23rd minutes of the play by Ava Harlan. Just 36 seconds later the top team put the ball in the net for the second and final goal of the game.

In the older age group, Bins Be Clean finished the season with a loss and a tie, but its strong season play kept the team at the top of the rankings. Wash Family Construction, which finished second in the regular season, completed its night with a victory over Bins Be Clean.

The men and women who make up the co-ed adult soccer league finished their fourth game of the season last Thursday night, leading them into the second half of the regular season.

The three weeks of play prior saw tough competition and close scores among the teams. Week four was four blowout games, with players missing and mismatches.

Sato Real Estate showed its dominance on the pitch against Jiffy Lube with a 7-2 win, putting it neck and neck with Eason Builders.

Eason Builders, in the last game of the night, handed Ross Built Construction its fourth loss of the season finishing six goals ahead. Ross Built goes into the fifth game versus Lancaster Design looking for its first win.

Lancaster Design, a team once on top with Sato Real Estate, fell to third place with a loss against AMI Locals with the score 3-8.

The 8 p.m. game had Moss Builders facing Slim’s Place. At the end of 46 minutes of play, Moss Builders gained its second win of the season. Like Ross Built Construction, Slim’s Place looks forward to its first W next week.

All eight teams push forward toward the final games of the season in December, with the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game on Dec. 20.

The chill in the air last Tuesday night was paired with the sounds of youth soccer at The Center of Anna Maria Island. Several weeks into the fall soccer season, little kids as young as three years old up to 13 years old have been hitting the pitch Tuesday and Wednesday nights for futbal action.

The smallest little cleats learn the essentials with the help of volunteer coaches like Meghan Horner who take time out of their busy weekly schedule to spend an hour with the Island area boys and girls.

Wearing cleats, the little ballers in their long socks hold their shin guards as they excitedly kick the soccer ball down and around the field with Coach Horner and her assistants. During the 60 minute clinic, sponsored by The Freckled Fin, the kids work on shooting drills with the pop-up goals and passing “drills”.

Playing a fun game, Coach Horner helped the players learn how to dribble the soccer ball by keeping it close to them. In the exercise, if the ball hit the coach, the kids chose an animal that the coach pretends to be as the reward.

Cats, elephants, lizards and more delight the clinic goers as they learn the game of soccer while having fun in the sun.
