Sports excitement continues at The Center

ANNA MARIA – The Center of Anna Maria Island recreational sports filled the field with youth and adult soccer spirit and adult basketball hoopla last week. As the youth soccer season and adult basketball seasons quickly come to an end in the coming weeks, adult soccer season is taking off with the second week of play.

In the first round of basketball playoffs, Moss Builders, the top-seeded team ending the regular season, joined by Paddy Wagon, Solid Rock Construction and Beach Bums, advanced to the next week of play. Hitting the hard court this past Monday night, Paddy Wagon went up against Beach Bums and Solid Rock Construction faced Moss Builders.

After six weeks of regular season play, Moss Builders’ J.B. Shuck was the team’s top scorer and finished ninth in the league with 67 points. For Solid Rock Construction, Dom Otteni and J.J. Friszman, scored 94 and 78 points, ranking second and fifth in the league for scoring, respectively.

Andy Shown, for Paddy Wagon, had 82 points in the regular season, placing him at the number four spot in points scored. Beach Bums’ Austin Young topped the scoring charts with 105 points, while teammate Carlton Bennett scored 74 points of his own, putting him in the sixth top scoring position in the community center league.

Each of the semifinal teams is looking toward the basketball championship game scheduled for Monday, Oct. 25.

The youth soccer league’s championship games are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26. Getting one step closer to the big game, Miz & Hiz Biz’s Cecelia Kroth scored three goals in last Tuesday’s game against Blalock Walters. Teammates Jackson Pakbaz and Stephen Wilson a total of three goals get the important win.

Moss Builders’ Mason Moss and Callin Westfall both scored two goals to give their team a 4-1 victory against Solid Rock Construction, as both teams had a bye week. Nixon Conner scored the lone goal for Solid Rock.

In the game that was won by The Gitt Team in a shootout, Colin Bankert scored the single goal for the winning team. Tomas Bartos had a solo goal for Shady Lady, giving the team an opportunity for the win. The Gitt Team’s win can be credited to Matthew Winsper and Bankert, each getting one past the Shady Lady goalkeeper for the win.

The last game Tuesday night was a close one pairing Beach Bums and Tidy MD with the final score of 4-3 and Beach Bums the winners. The Sato brothers, Brandon and Dylan, did all the scoring for the squad. Jesse Zaccagnino had two goals for Tidy MD, along with a single by Kirra Quinby.

In week two of adult co-ed soccer play, Slim’s Place dominated the scoring against Emily Moss Designs in an 8-2 win. Scoring for Slim’s Place was spread throughout the roster, with singles by Tyler Brewer, Kali Richardson and Connor Bystrom. Jessica Williams put in two shots, while teammate Race Arande had a hat trick.

On the other side of the field, Connor Haughey and Ed Moss each had a goal in the game for Emily Moss Designs.

With three points in the statistic books, Daniel Hampton helped The Gitt Team win against Sandbar. Brent Laudicina, returning to the league after a long stint away, scored one of two points for the team. Tim Holly had the other goal to help keep his team in the game, despite the loss.

Josh Sato and the Sato Real Estate squad showed once again why they are dominant both on paper and on the field. Two of the Sato Real Estate players, Ryan Hogan and Danny Anderson had three goals in the game, with a single by Hugo Santos.

The Servis First Bank team fought hard to stay in it, but the lone goal by Ugur Durmaz just was not enough to overcome the seven goals by their opponents.

In the final game of the week, Blalock Walters beat Beach Bums by two goals, keeping them undefeated. With only a single goal for Beach Bums in the game, the three goals by Chris Scott, Matt Staggs and Kaan Erdem were enough for the win.

Soccer and basketball action continues next week with championship games and more adult soccer.

Sato Real Estate on top again

ANNA MARIA – Two weeks into fall, Thursday nights came alive once again for another adult co-ed soccer season at The Center. In an updated shade of purple jersey, the familiar face of team Sato Real Estate, Josh Sato, took to the field with brother Ben.

To look at the Sato Real Estate roster on paper, the team appeared to be solid with some unfamiliar names. Watching the 10-man squad on the field, even without powerhouse Will Kretzmann, it is clear Sato Real Estate is the team to beat.

Sato Real Estate easily beat the Sandbar team on the hottest day of the week. To their credit, Sandbar played with nobody on the bench.

Starting the scoring in the first game of the season was Shawn Markham for Sato Real Estate.

Keeping goalkeeper Steve Oelfke busy all night, the Sato offense made shots against Sandbar defenders or had wide-open shots. At the five-minute mark, Oelfke made a great stop, keeping the score at 1-0.

The game continued with great action on both sides of midfield despite no goals by either team. With 11 minutes on the clock for the first half of play, Hugo Santos connected with the soccer ball for Sato Real Estate’s second goal.

Up by two points and less than six minutes later, J. Sato was left alone with a direct shot to the goal. The near-guaranteed goal put the score to 3-0.

Once again joining the Sato Real Estate team, Amy Ivin was just getting warmed up when her shot hit the far post, only to be followed up by teammate Greg Ross, whose shot hit the same post.

Not to be denied too long, Sato Real Estate’s Thomas Mangotic scored the fourth goal for his team and of the night.

Returning to the Island’s recreational league, Sandbar’s Teddy Louloudes scored the team’s first goal with authority. After several changes of possession, the game went into halftime with the score 4-1. Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Sandbar’s keeper made another impressive stop. Ivin quickly took advantage following with a goal.

Four points ahead, the Sandbar team did not give up. The tired but determined team worked hard, as the heat and no substitute players started to take a toll.

Trying to keep the team in the game, Tim Holly scored Sandbar’s second goal with nine minutes left on the clock, advancing the score to 5-2.

Santos found himself in scoring position, with Oelfke on the ground, giving Sato Real Estate a four-point lead. Oelfke ended the game with 13 saves in the game.

With one minute left on the scoreboard clock, Sato Real Estate put the final nail in the game, pushing the final score to 7-2.

Miz & Hiz Biz/Blalock Walters match-up ends in draw

ANNA MARIA – It was picture day at The Center last Tuesday night and the excitement of youth soccer filled the air as 10 teams took to the pitch for week three action.

As the youngest players left the soccer clinic fields, the tweens and teens of the 11- to 14-year-old league took their places to warm up.

In the first game of the night on the big field, team Miz & Hiz Biz prepared to face the Blalock Walters squad. Two halves of recreational soccer proved how evenly matched the two teams are at this point in the season.

Chad Nunez, for the Miz & Hiz team, scored the first goal of the game off an assist by Stephen Wilson with 9:49 left in the first half of play. As goalie, Wilson was credited with three saves in addition to the assist.

With just two minutes left on the scoreboard clock, Blalock Walters’ Mason Moss tied up the score with a goal of his own.

Ending the half with the score tied at 1-1, both teams returned to the field ready to battle against former teammates and friends in the youth recreational soccer league.

Blalock Walters’ goalie Cale Rudacille finished his first half of work with four great saves. Giving Rudacille time on the field, Moss stepped into the goalkeeper position, making two critical stops of his own in the final 20 minutes of play.

In the action-packed game, with solid match-ups on both sides of the game, the second half of play proved to be just as exciting as the first with two more goals scored before the last whistle was blown.

For Miz & Hiz, Chad Nunez made a shot that got past the goalie for the second team point. Andrew Graham made the statistics sheet with a solid goal shot for Blalock Walters.

After each team scored two goals in the second half with Konnor Oelfke making two goals in the game, 40 minutes of regulation play ended in a tie ball game with the score 2-2.

The two teams will face each other again in week six of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., the last week of regular season play. The four teams in the league are each practicing and playing hard in hopes of making it to the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 at a time to be determined.

Youth soccer at The Center kicks off another season

ANNA MARIA – With the start of another school year, The Center of Anna Maria Island’s pitch fills with the sounds of soccer every Tuesday night. Island area youth gathered last Tuesday night for the first games of the season.

After one game, team Beach Bums claimed a victory along with Shady Lady and Moss Builders in the 8- to 10-year-old soccer league. The tween and teen winners include Blalock Walters and Miz & Hiz Biz.

Tidy MD’s coach, John Coleman, borrowed players from other teams to make the matchup against Beach Bums possible for the first game of the night. In the exciting season opener, The Center’s statistics have Riley Karecki, Kirra Quinby and Nolyn Fetzer with one goal each.

Winning by two points, the Beach Bums squad earned the victory with eight saves by Elijah Brannock in goal. On offense, veteran player Dylan Sato had a hat trick scoring three goals. Younger brother Brandon Sato and Turner Worth each had solo goals.

With the Sato brother’s dad, Jason Sato, and uncle, Josh Sato, volunteer coaching on the sidelines, the win put the team in good company with the other undefeated teams going into week two.

This season’s shorter regular season schedule has the playoff and championship games ending before Halloween, with the final games on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Beach Bums takes soccer championship

ANNA MARIA – The youth indoor soccer season had exciting match-ups last week, all with wins, losses and ties by all four teams. The season came to a spectacular end Tuesday night with two semifinal contests, with second-seed Beach Bums and top-ranked Moss Builders coming out victorious. The two teams faced each other in the championship game.

In the final game of the season, the goalkeepers for each team were kept busy the entire match. Moss Builders’ keeper, Austin Guess, had 16 stops in the game.

In a shooting frenzy, the Beach Bums squad kept Guess working and on his toes. Scoring by the Sato brothers, Dylan and Brandon, helped the Beach Bums team win the big game.

With two big goals, Savannah Coba led the game in scoring for Beach Bums, and helped her team grab the “W” with a final score of 4-1.

On the offensive front for Moss Builders, Gabrielle Bodnar scored the team’s only goal of the game.

All four teams that made up the eight-to 11-year-old indoor soccer league played hard and fought hard on the hard court all summer, reminding players, friends and family why The Center indoor soccer league is one not to miss.

Team Catalyst remains undefeated

Team Catalyst remains undefeated

The kids of indoor soccer took a break last week, making adult co-ed flag football the sport to watch at The Center. Three teams went into the week’s action undefeated; only one came out on top.

Team TBT suffered its first loss, falling to Rays Rambling 30-13. Rambling’s Ryan Moss threw for four touchdowns to Karri Stephens and James Roadman. On the other side of the field, Brandon Kull hit Matt Briley and Melissa Acevedo for scoring plays.

Cortez Deep Sea Fishing could not find its groove until late in the game against Sandbar. Looking for its first win, Sandbar scored early and narrowly managed to take the victory 20-13.

The speed of the Sandbar rusher put the pressure on Cortez’s QB Tuna McCracken. McCracken led his team down the field a couple of times, with the Sandbar defense denying them access to the endzone.

On the Sandbar offense, Anthony Mannino threw for two TDs and caught one for six points with Matt Manger at the QB for the play. Manger scored a touchdown of his own to help with his team’s victory.

Being forced to improvise the offense, Cortez Deep Sea Fishing showed their opponent why they cannot be underestimated. Fighting the clock, Cortez’s offense and defense fought hard in the second half of the game taking it down to the final seconds.

Despite the two scoring passes by McCracken to Blake Balais and Tyler Brewer, the missed flag pulls by the Cortez defense and inability to connect at critical moments led to the team’s first defeat.

Beach Bums came into week three looking for their first win, but We The Best Lending found their second win instead with a 30-0 pasting of the Bums.

Quarterback Chase Richardson threw for three touchdowns to Jonathan Soultatos and Dominick Otteni for WTBL. Soultatos added six more points with an interception that he took to the end zone.

Winning for the third week in a row, Jon Moss and the Catalyst crew kept the TMT team scoreless in last week’s game with a 20-0 victory. Throwing to Evelyn Long, Brent Moss and Jesse Skipper, Moss secured his team’s place at the top of the flag football rankings just short of mid-season.

Thursday night Catalyst matches up against Team We The Best Lending, who goes into week four with the same 2-1 record as TBT, Rays Ramblings and Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. TMT and Beach Bums are still in search of their first win.

Youth indoor soccer excitement at The Center

Youth indoor soccer excitement at The Center

In Tuesday night youth indoor soccer action, team Moss Builders and team Shady Lady took the floor for two halves of strong shooting, fierce defense and amazing team play by all. The Moss brothers did the scoring for the Moss Builders team, with the support of the Guesses and the rest of the squad.

Aiden Guess finished the game with one assist, while brother Austin kept the opponent’s scoring to three goals with seven recorded saves.

Mason Moss started the scoring in the first half of play for his team. The Shady Lady defense worked hard to keep Moss’ shooting to a minimum.

In goal for Shady Lady, Cale Rudacille made four critical stops and teammate Jack Zaccagnino saved seven Moss Builders shots. One of the strikes by Myles Moss eluded goalkeeper Zaccagnino, igniting the spectators at The Center.

Three of the Shady Lady powerhouses did the scoring in the game. Amelia Blunkall, Cale Rudacille and Jack McCarthy each had solo goals, giving the team the lead for most of the game.

In the final minutes of the game, Mason Moss scored the third point for the Moss Builder team to tie the game. Each side’s defense fought hard, preventing the other from scoring up to the final buzzer.

The final games of the indoor soccer season will be played on Aug. 10 at The Center, leading to a season champion.

Last week in adult flag football at the Island’s community center, two teams in the league dominated the gridiron. Both Rays Ramblings and Cortez Deep Sea Fishing not only stopped their opponent’s offense but also crushed it during their games. With a final score of 42-6, the game was ended with time on the clock with the mercy rule employed, giving Beach Bums their second loss in the season.

Rays Ramblings took it to the endzone for 47 points and prevented the TMT offense from scoring more than 12 points. For the second time in the night, the mercy rule ended a game with minutes on the scoreboard.

With five weeks left in the regular season, the adult flag football championship title is still up for grabs. The final championship play is scheduled to end with the final game of the season at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Moss Builders top youth indoor ranks

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – With fresh legs and energy-filled kids thanks to the tropical storm threat that caused a delay in indoor soccer play, the Shady Lady 8- to 11-year-old indoor soccer team looked to be the easy winner against the Beach Bums squad last Tuesday night.

The team, however, appeared to lose its mental edge, giving their opponent the opening they needed to come back and win the game by three goals.

Camden Rudacille and Jesse Zaccagnino did the scoring for the Shady Lady team, with a single for Rudacille and two for Zaccagnino.

On the other end of the field, brothers Cale Rudacille and Jack Zaccagnino protected the goal with five and four saves, respectively.

The early work of the Rudacille and Zaccagnino dynamic duos just was not enough to win the game.

The Beach Bums scoring came off the feet of Turner Worth with two goals and Savannah Coba with three points for her team. Worth and Coba each had an assist in the win.

Another dynamic duo brother powerhouse came from the Sato brothers, Dylan and Brandon. Taking turns as the Beach Bums goalkeeper, D. Sato had five saves in the game and B. Sato made two stops of his own.

In the second game of the evening, team Moss Builders retained their undefeated status, with plenty of season left.

Austin Guess had 16 stops in the game for Moss Builders team. Three goalies were kept busy on the Solid Rock Construction squad. The duos dominated again in this game with Chad and Liam Nunez in the goal. C. Nunez made a critical stop and L. Nunez prevented the score twice against the Moss Builders’ offense.

Isaac Roadman topped the goalie charts for his team with four saves, helping to keep the score of the game close.

Offensively, the shooters were on fire. The Schneider family scored four of the six goals for Moss Builders. Jack Schneider topped the scoring with two points. Dean and Guy Schneider each had a goal.

Putting more statistics in the books for the Schneider talented trio, G. Schneider had an assist along with teammate Aiden Guess with an assist and a lone goal.

The talented trios continue to perform on the indoor soccer court with Addie Guess’ goal to add to those of Aiden and the saves by Austin.

The Moss Builders’ win cannot overshadow the work on the offensive side of the field by The Solid Rock crew. In addition to his action in goal, C. Nunez put two points on the scoreboard.

Continuing with the triple threat in the game, I. Roadman’s sibling Obadiah Roadman, scored a goal, while sister Bella played a supporting role.

The duo dominance continued with the strike and score by Solid Rock Construction’s McKenna Darak, while Madi Darak assisted her team.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, July 27, with the championship game scheduled for Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m.

A Hayward Cup worth waiting for

A Hayward Cup worth waiting for

ANNA MARIA – The Florida rainy season only elevated the anticipation of the final game of another adult co-ed soccer season. The skies at The Center parted long enough, despite two rain game cancellations and a looming tropical storm, for the #2 ranked C.A.B.B. team to match up against the unlikely opponent, Salty Printing, in the big game.

After playing the semifinal games earlier in the night, each team had a minute to mentally and physically prepare for another full game of play. C.A.B.B. defeated Flynn Law 7-2 in the first game of the night, while Salty Printing won the important semifinal game against Slim’s Place with the final score 4-3.

Both teams kept the goalkeepers busy in the Paul “Ace” Hayward Cup championship game. League leader, Connor Haughey, had seven recorded saves for C.A.B.B. His counterpart, Matt Marshall, made 13 stops in the game.

With a valiant effort, the Salty Printing team scored two goals in the game with power strikes by Gerardo Urbiola and Jessica Williams. Urbiola’s goal and single assist just was not enough to help his team capture the cup.

C.A.B.B. earned the W with goals by Austin Nutting, Luc Vecchio and Timo Vecchio. L. Vecchio was credited with an assist along with teammate Lindsey Styka. The C.A.B.B. players who made the statistics book in the championship game, along with Greg Moss, Rim Robertson and Kali Richardson, who helped them get there, closed out the season on top.

Shootout win for last seed Salty Printing

ANNA MARIA – Last week started the playoff games for another adult co-ed soccer season at The Center. The second game on the Thursday night schedule would prove to be a battle royale, giving the spectators their money’s worth, so to speak.

In a repeat match-up of the last week of the regular season, the top-ranked Beach Bums team, led by Yuri Pereira, took to the pitch with team Salty Printing. Kevin Roman’s Salty squad lost the previous meeting against Pereira’s team by two goals, ultimately putting them in eighth place going into the playoffs.

With technically an undefeated regular season, with a 6-0-1 record, Beach Bums was clearly the favorite to win the quarter-final game of the week.

Coming in as the underdog, Salty Printing could not field a full squad all season, mostly due to season-ending injuries that plagued a number of the team’s players.

This roster issue continued into the first round of playoffs. With five on the field and a goalie, playing one down, Salty Printing fortunately had a substitute player on the sideline – fresh legs that would become critical in the game.

Despite the underdog status and playing with one less player than Beach Bums, Salty Printing played tough and played physical, matching the physicality and energy of their adversary of the week.

Going into halftime, it looked like Beach Bums would be moving forward to the semifinal round of games, but another half of play would prove otherwise.

The Beach Bums squad had a sub on the bench to move in and out of the game as needed, but their lack of use of the additional player in the first half proved to be an error in the final 20 minutes of play.

With the heat of the evening and tired legs getting the best of them, the Beach Bums defense struggled to keep the Salty Printing shooters away from goalkeeper Tuna McCracken.

Despite his best efforts, McCracken finished with five saves in regulation time, letting three get past him.

Taking an onslaught of strikes from the Beach Bums offense, goalie Matt Marshall stopped 10 shots. Marshall was also scored on three times, resulting in a tied game after regulation play.

As the seconds ticked off the scoreboard clock, the bodychecks increased and the action became more heated. With a calamitous step by Pereira onto the leg of Murat Akay, tempers flared and Akay was out for the rest of the game with an ankle injury.

Salty’s scoring was completed by Roman with one point, and Gerardo Urbiola, who was able to get two of his shots past McCracken.

In critical support on the field, Robbie Fellowes, Nate Talucci, Ed Moss and Akay fought for position and the ball for the Salty team.

Lucky Durmaz had all three Beach Bums goals, with an assist by Emily Fischer. Playing both sides of midfield, Tyler Brewer, Blair Schlossberg and Jamie Hutchinson helped take the Beach Bums team to a shootout.

After the spirited play on the field, the energy was high going into the penalty kicks from both teams.

Putting their five best shooters on the official list, the names and order of those selected to fire the soccer ball strategically toward the goal could determine which team secured a spot in the semifinals.

With McCracken on the line, Roman was slated as the first shooter. His shot sailed past the goalie to start the shootout.

Alternating shooting team order, Fischer, Fellowes, and Hutchinson all made their shots for their teams.

A string of four shooters surprisingly missed. Talucci, Durmaz, Gerardo and Brewer, all excellent shooters, could not help their team capture the W.

Finally, Salty Printing keeper Marshall took to the shooter’s position.

Knowing that making the shot could propel his team toward the championship game, Marshall remained calm and shot the soccer ball past McCracken for the team’s third point in overtime play.

Team captain Pereira was the fifth and final shooter for Beach Bums. Making the shot meant another round of shooting; missing the shot meant it was all over for Pereira’s top-seed team.

Feeling all the pressure, Pereira could not put a point in the stats book. The unexpected victorious Salty Printing team worked hard to survive and live to play another week at The Center.

Bridge Tender, AM Bath Time take it all in youth soccer

ANNA MARIA – Just as the school year came to an end for most Anna Maria Island area kids, the youth soccer season at The Center finished with two championship games last Tuesday night. Both the 8- to 10-Year-Old league and 11- to 15-Year-Old league took to the pitch with team Bridge Tender and team AM Bath Time victorious.

With Colin Bankert protecting the Bridge Tender goal, finishing the big game with five saves, his team’s offense fought a tough Beach Bums defense. Bankert’s counterpart, Alex Serra, held his own at the Beach Bums goal with three saves against heavy hitter strikes.

Beach Bums’ Dylan Sato had the lone goal for his team that finished the regular season ranked fifth, only to play in the championship game.

Closing out the season in third going into the playoffs, Bridge Tender showed why they deserved to make it into the final game. Logan Stevens scored the two goals for the winning team, helping to earn his team the title of season champions for the 8- to 10-Year-Old soccer league.

Throughout the season, the Beach Bums team rallied and fought hard thanks to D. Sato and A. Serra’s teammates, Preston LaPensee, Brandon Sato, Noah Shoulson, Charlie Serra, Penny Payne, Julian Whipple-Anderson, Avaya Kohlmeyer and Mia Ross.

On the other side of the pitch, Stevens and Bankert were joined all season by Matthew Winsper, Callin Westfall, Lexi Baugher, Madeline Kimmons, Kason Davis, Elijah Brannock and Quinn Schlereth.

In the follow-up game, the teens matched up on the field for the final game of the season. The top-ranked Blalock Walters worked hard with two players in goal to stop the AM Bath Time offense. Cale Rudacille finished with two saves and teammate Malia Keith made three stops, but their efforts just were not quite enough.

With goals by JM Fenney and Jackson Packbaz, Blalock Walters just could not make it happen in the championship head-to-head. The firepower of AM Bath Time’s Jack Mattick was just too much. Scoring four goals in the game, Mattick’s points were compounded by single scores by Maddox Culhane and Frankie Coleman.

The big win could not have happened without the five critical stops by Mya Ferrari working as the keeper for AM Bath Time.

The loss was tough for team Blalock Walters, but it was not without an appreciation for all of the players on the squad that got them to the big game. In addition to the solid play by the scorers and goalies in the championship game, the other members of the team, Jack McCarthy, Gabriella Gilbert, William Pakbaz, Paxton Powell and Victoria Perry, helped to make the successful season possible.

Getting to the final game of the season, and defeating the top seed team in the championship game was thanks in part to the AM Bath Time team effort by Caden Quinby, Noelle Baird, Madison Farrari, Ava Harlan and Katelyn Cecil throughout the season.

With the close of the youth soccer season, the adults enter the world of playoffs Thursday night. In quarter-final action, #3 Flynn Law faces #6 Sandbar, while #2 C.A.B.B. challenges #7 Sato Real Estate.

Top seed Beach Bums takes on the last place Salty Printing team, and in the middle of the pack, #4 Killer Bait will match up against #5 Slim’s Place, each team working hard and focusing on the championship game scheduled for Thursday, June 24 at 9 p.m. at The Center.

Players show parents how it’s done on the pitch

ANNA MARIA – Youth soccer at The Center starts with preschoolers and parent-coached clinics, moving into competitive recreational games with the 8- to 10-year-old league.

Despite the demise of the traditional Seven Up soccer game, due to a downturn in elementary-school-aged Island athletes, the Parent-Player end-of-the-season game is a custom that made its way to this season’s schedule.

From the youngest player to those about to move to the big field, the clinic participants showed what they learned this season, playing against their coaches and parents.

The basic skills learned on the littlest pitches at the Island’s community center developed into advanced skills on the larger clinic fields.

The throw-ins were stronger.

The goal kicks went farther.

The shots on goal were more accurate.

The saves were amazing.

Playing against the adults brought smiles to everyone’s faces and reminded everyone why community center soccer has arguably been the most popular sport for two decades.

More than a decade later, adult co-ed soccer is still going and growing at The Center. After six weeks of play, there was no movement in the rankings.

At the top of the leader board, C.A.B.B.’s success is in part due to Timo Vecchio, one of the season’s top scorers.

Goalkeeper Connor Haughey, with 48 saves going into the seventh and final week of the regular season, has been instrumental in the team’s wins.

C.A.B.B. faces #3 Flynn Law in the 7 p.m. matchup Thursday, June 3. Playoffs start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 10.

C.A.B.B. on top going into week six

ANNA MARIA – After a week off, the men and women of adult soccer took to The Center pitch again for week five action. Three teams ended last week’s action with four wins and C.A.B.B. on top of the leaderboard, with Beach Bums right behind with the same record.

Playing the second game of the night, C.A.B.B. played against #6 Salty Printing, which finished the night with one win and four losses in the season. Struggling to put a full squad on the field, Steve Oelfke, the goalkeeper for Slim’s Place, played back-to-back games, protecting the net for Salty.

In his first game of the night, Oelfke had 10 saves against the Beach Bums shooting roster, despite the loss. Raul Loera got two shots past the opposing team’s goalie. Osvaldo Cabello scored one goal of his own for his team.

At the half, Beach Bums was down by two goals. With five stops in the game, Beach Bums keeper, Tuna McCracken, was supported by a strong defense, allowing the team’s offense to make quick work of the other end of the field.

Team captain Yuri Pereira had one goal in the game along with teammate Emily Fischer. Lucky Durmaz scored two points in the game along with one assist in the team’s win.

With seconds left on the scoreboard clock, Beach Bums tied up the game, making the final seconds all-important.

The Beach Bums team eked out the win during the final seconds of the game, with the official time kept by the field referee.

This week’s play puts C.A.B.B. on the field against Sato Real Estate. Currently, at the bottom of the ranks, the Sato Real Estate team knows that the championship is still within reach. Playoff action starts on Thursday, June 10.

Friendly competition at its best

Starting the week’s soccer play in a 1-1 tie, team Shady Lady, coached by David Zaccagnino, and James Roadman’s Solid Rock Construction team exemplified the spirit of youth recreational soccer. Competition, skill development, teamwork and fun are all part of the sports experience at The Center.

The Shady Lady offense kept keeper Austin Guess, for Solid Rock Construction, busy defending the shots of players like Jesse Zaccagnino and Tomas Bartos. Four of the Shady Lady squad shared the goalie duties during the game, with two saves by J. Zaccagnino, and single stops by Bartos, Riley Karecki and Oliver Tirpak.

The defenses of both teams kept the scoring to a minimum, resulting in the tie game. The offensive strikes resulted in single goals by both teams.
