Team Adrian Griffin Interiors shuts out opponent

ANNA MARIA – Under a clear winter sky last Tuesday night, families and friends cheered on the 8- to 10-year-old flag football players at The Center who took the field for the first night of competitive play. After the season kickoff jamboree night, the flag football play was interrupted by a winter storm, delaying week one play.

Last week, the elementary school-age youth took to Field 1 at the community center while the 4- to 5-year-old players learned the game on the small field. Running the field before sundown, team AMI Coconuts and the Slim’s Place squad warmed up with volunteer coaches Bobby McGraw and Sammy Romero and ran plays.

The older kids took their first snaps of the season in games leading to the playoffs starting in March. Solid Rock Construction and The Fish Guy Aquarium Services teams faced each other to start the season, with Solid Rock taking home the first win, 24-7.

Elijah Roadman, the Solid Rock quarterback, threw four touchdown passes for the victory. Ruby Kesten and Samuel Raulerson each made two scoring catches for their team. On the other side of the football, Kesten caught the pass of The Fish Guy’s QB for an interception.

Everett Hood passed for a touchdown to receiver Bruno Peerani, giving The Fish Guy team six points. Adding to the team’s score, Graeme Bekkerus caught the only point after conversion pass in the game for either team.

Despite the deficit on the scoreboard, The Fish Guy Aquarium Services team fought hard on the field for two halves of play.

The Moss Builders team could not find the end zone in their matchup against Adrian Griffin Interiors, who won their on-field battle 18-0. In the three-score game, Grayson Hinckle threw a scoring pass to Jackson Kesten. Kesten added six more points to the score with a rushing TD.

Teammate Asher Patel used his speed to run the football into the end zone while playing on offense. Defensively Patel dominated with four flag pulls and an interception, helping to secure the team’s first win of the season.

Moss Builders’ Owen Mahoney was his team’s standout defensively with nine big stops. Parker Svoboda showed he has reliable hands with three catches and an interception. Juliette Sato and Louis Bacon had defensive stops, exemplifying the efforts of the Moss team despite the loss.

Team Diamond Turf had the bye week to start the winter youth flag football season for the division.

Floridian Mortgage holds on for championship

ANNA MARIA –The Center closed out the adult summer season last Thursday night with three games played, and Floridian Mortgage come out on top after a hard-fought 29-27 game against team Fishing with Salty for the championship title.

After beating Salty Printing in the semifinal round of play, top seed Floridian Mortgage faced the Fishing with Salty team, which defeated Moss Builders in their playoff game 52-33. It was anyone’s game up to the final seconds, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm on the field.

Floridian Mortgage started the game on offense and quickly made a statement with a bomb by Chase Richardson to Tim Holly for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Right out of the chute, Richardson’s team was up 7-0 after Cory Banks scored the point after the score.

Fishing with Salty’s attempts to put points on the scoreboard were cut short after Dina DeJesus started her team on the right foot with a completed pass. Holly’s interception on the next play stopped the drive.

Richardson could not capitalize on the turnover, throwing bad passes and leading to a three-and-out series.

Taking over on downs, Fishing with Salty was ready as the team steadily marched down the field with short passes. Dylan Doyle, on second down, took the football into the pass-only zone in Floridian Mortgage territory.

Scoring its first touchdown, Jonathan Soultatos squeezed through defenders to score for team Fishing, taking the score to 7-6. Doyle scored the extra point.

With the score tied, Richardson’s first target was Holly for a long run after the reception. Rex Kesten caught the football near the endzone after an injury timeout due to a DeJesus injury.

Tracking the front of the endzone, Tyler Brewer caught the ball for Floridian’s second TD of the game, with the finishing touch by Banks.

Leading once again, Floridian Mortgage played strong defense at their own endzone with their opponent in scoring position. Making the stop, Richardson returned to the field with his team, continuing to struggle.

Richardson overthrew Holly but eventually found Kesten for 6 points. Holly added a point to the scoreboard with a catch in the endzone.

After moving the ball to near midfield, Brewer got the call walking just over the first down line with the football overhead. With the clock down to the final minute of the first half of the game, Richardson found Brewer as a second option receiver on second down with the clock running.

With the football sitting on the 7-yard line, Floridian’s hope of scoring before halftime was dashed with another incomplete throw.

On offense, Fishing with Salty was 14 points behind. Rushing Matt Briley, Holly sacked the quarterback in the endzone for a safety, giving team Floridian two points and possession of the ball.

First pass out, Richardson hit Holly, catching for a first down out-of-bounds with less than 10 seconds on the scoreboard clock. An impeding the rusher penalty for Floridian Mortgage and interception in the endzone by Briley ended the first half of play.

Fishing with Salty had the football to start the half with a short yardage play. The second snap resulted in a bomb to Doyle for 6 points. Soultatos scored the extra point, making it a 9-point ball game.

Three incomplete Richardson throws later, Fishing with Salty was back on offense with catches by Octavious Cole. A critical first down catch by Miguel Rodriguez kept the forward progress moving.

On second down, QB Briley kept the ball for long yardage after a quick pitch back from his teammate under center. With the football at the 7-yard line, Soultatos was alone in the right corner of the endzone for the TD.

After the point after conversion by the Fishing squad, Richardson mixed it up, running with the football after a quick pitch from Holly two plays in a row, resulting in a first down with less than 12 minutes left in the game.

Standing his ground and avoiding a penalty, Holly and Soultatos had a standoff at the line of scrimmage as Richardson searched for an open player down field. After two bad passes, Richardson’s throw on third down was not caught by the intended receiver thanks to tight defense by Fishing with Salty.

Fishing with Salty’s Cole caught a big pass on third down for a TD, advancing the score to 29-27. With a possible win in sight, Brewer’s reception in the endzone denied the additional point to team Fishing.

A mid-air collision took Brewer and Briley out of the rest of the game with critical seconds left to play. Despite all their efforts, Fishing with Salty could not make up the large scoring gap made by Floridian Mortgage early in the game.

The game was not pretty, but team Floridian Mortgage was named the league’s champion, winning over Fishing with Salty by two points.

Center summer sports kick off

Center summer sports kick off

ANNA MARIA – The gymnasium at The Center of Anna Maria Island was filled with excitement as the summer sports season started on the Island last Tuesday night. Getting out of the heat, youth indoor soccer kicked off the season on the inside pitch while the adults heated up the field with flag football action.

The youngest players, ages 3-7, played scrimmages as part of their developmental work with the older kids playing in head-to-head matches. Four of the five 8- to 10-year-old league teams played with Shady Lady Horticultural Services sitting out the first week.

Team Positive Waves beat the Progressive Cabinetry team by three goals. With the final score at 5-2, Ryan Greenberg had the hot foot for the Positive Waves squad. Hitting three shots, Greenberg’s scoring was joined by solo goals by Sebastian Cordova and Silas Whitehead.

In the win, Parker Svoboda was credited with an assist. Goalie Kellen Reed had five saves in the game against the Progressive Cabinetry offense.

Assists by Jackson Griffin, Ellison Maynard and Rafa Price helped keep the Progressive team in the game for two halves of fast-paced action.

With an arsenal of shots coming their way, Wesley Bekkerus worked hard, successfully saving seven of the Positive Wave shots in the first half of the game. Griffin relieved Bekkerus, making 11 nice stops.

Ending the second game in a tie, teams Gulf Drive Café and Solid Rock Construction each scored 10 points in their first game of the indoor season. Gulf Drive’s points were scored by Dallas Biggers, Joseph Caballero and Leo Burns, with six, three and a single goal, respectively.

Game statistics note two assists by Biggers and three for Burns.

Both teams put two goalkeepers in goal during the tied ballgame. On the Gulf Drive side, Everett Hood made nine saves and Titus Moss stopped eight shots. Solid Rock’s Elijah Roadman had 13 strong stops, while Carson Long saved six shots on goal.

Solid Rock’s scoring came off the boots of two players. Samuel Raulerson scored his solo goal. Teammate Matthew Darak used his skills and the boards to put nine points on the scoreboard.

With only four teams, the teams will get to know their competition well. Week one play matched up Jiffy Lube and AMI Outfitters. Finishing the game in another tie, each team scored eight goals.

Jiffy Lube’s Callin Westfall scored half of the points for his team. Hudson West and Gunnar Maize split the remaining four goals. Assist credits went to Maize with three and West with a single.

Putting three players at the net, Jiffy Lube’s Nolan Anderson had five stops, while Parker Svoboda made three and Maize saved one. AMI Outfitters followed suit with their five-person defensive attack in goal.

Sharing the responsibility, Jordan Tobey led the pack with six saves in the game. With three stops, Grayson Cohen helped his team with the 8-8 tie. Mackenzie Cohen, Mackenna Darak and Maggie Neidzwick each had a single save in the final game of the night.

Offensively, Wes Saxon scored six points. G. Cohen got the soccer ball past the goalie once, along with Matthew Darak, each claiming one point. Assisting with the scoring for AMI Outfitters, G. Cohen was credited with two passes that led to the successful shot.

Matthew Darak and Neidzwick each had assists in the game, adding to their game accomplishments.

In what looks to prove to be an exciting adult co-ed flag football season, eight teams took to the gridiron last Thursday night. The four high-scoring games showed the skills of the players this season.

Team Floridian Mortgage earned a win against Moss Builders 26-25. Also scoring 26 points, Fishing with Salty beat the Solid Rock Air Conditioning team by five points in the second game of the season.

Prosper Bradenton beat Salty Printing 27-25. The Salty team played without their quarterback, Charles “Tuna” McCracken. In the week’s blowout, Solid Rock Electrical scored 41 points against team Slim’s Place. Slim’s Place finished the game by putting 25 points on the board, ending week one flag football action on the Island.

Adult soccer final match set

Adult soccer final match set

ANNA MARIA – More than two months of adult soccer action on the Island led to a showdown in the final games of the season this week.

Semifinal playoff action saw teams Ross Built Custom Homes and Progressive Cabinetry outplay their opponents, making way for them to take the last two slots in the league’s bracket.

In the first game of the night last on Thursday, Ross Built had an easy time of their win against team Pool America. The team’s active offense led to the 6-1 win.

Pool America’s Brandon Rolland scored the team’s only goal in the game, while teammate Jessica Reukberg was put to the test as the keeper. Reukberg is credited with six saves in the game against the onslaught of shots from her opponents.

Team captain Chris Klotz put an assist into the game statistics.

Also with six recorded saves, Max Gazzo supported team Ross Built defensively as goalie.

Ross Built Custom Home’s offense pursued the Pool American goal with five scorers and two additional team members with assists. Jake Ross, son of team captain Greg Ross, led the team in scoring with two points.

The father-son scoring trinity was realized with additional goals by G. Ross and Jake’s twin brother, Andrew. Dean Hinterstoisser and Tim Holly shot the other two points for Ross Built.

Hinterstoisser is credited with an assist in the game for Ross Built, with Helio Gomez and Ted Hurst with assists of their own to help with the team’s victory.

The scoring in the second game of the night started in the first minute of play, with Progressive Cabinetry taking the lead early and ultimately winning the game against team Salty Printing. The close semifinal game was won by a single point, making the early Progressive goal all too important.

The six winning shots came off the boots of team captain Keith Mahoney, with three goals, and Junior Martines and Osvaldo Cabello. Martines slid two shots by Salty Printing goalkeeper Charles “Tuna” McCracken.

Alex Aviles, Leo Gonzalez and Raul Loera each had a single assist for the Progressive Cabinetry team. In goal, Tyler Bekkerus made seven critical saves for his team, aiding the squad in securing the last slot in the season finale.

Kevin Roman’s Salty Printing team worked hard on the field to stop the Progressive charge. The 14 saves by McCracken exemplified the offensive attack released by his opponents.

Roman, the Salty team captain, dominated the field and his team’s scoring with four goals. Tyler Brewer made a solo goal for Salty Printing, working to keep the team in the hunt for the championship honors.

Salty Printing came up just short of the championship goal, 6-5, paving the way for the final matchup: Progressive Cabinetry versus Ross Built Custom Homes. The final game of the season for the Island’s adult co-ed soccer league is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 on The Center’s pitch.

ANNA MARIA – The weather is heating up and so is the adult soccer action at The Center of Anna Maria Island. With one game left in the regular season to be played by each team this Thursday night, week eight action left three teams with five wins and team Pool America on top.

Pool America’s 4-2 win over Beach House Waterfront Restaurant earned the team its fifth win. The 5-1-2 record puts them one win over the Progressive Cabinetry.

Losing by two goals, the Beach House team put two points on the scoreboard with eluding strikes by James Rodrigues and Marco Ruiz. Their teammate and keeper Aaron Frech made 11 stops.

Cody Wright put a hat trick to his season statistics. Adding to Wright’s three goals, Brandon Rolland not only saved seven shots but he is also credited with a goal in the third game of the night.

Closing out the soccer action for the night, second-seed Progressive Cabinetry narrowly lost to the Diamond Turf squad. The loss placed the team solidly one win under the league’s leader.

Progressive Cabinetry’s goalie, Tyler Bekkerus, was kept busy by the Diamond Turf offense. Bekkerus had 12 nice saves, but the Progressive defense could not stop McKenna Ainger and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos.

Bolanos had two goals to help his team earn the win, while Ainger is also credited with an assist.

The third team to end week eight with five wins was Salty Printing after winning against team Ross Built. In his usual place at goal, Charles “Tuna” McCracken is credited with 10 stops against the shooting of the Ross Built Custom Home squad.

Only the foot of Ted Hurst could get by the Salty Printing defense and past McCracken.

The Ross Built team fought and held Salty Printing to just three goals. Goalie Tim Holly made 12 saves and earned himself a yellow card.

Nate Talucci took his place in the goal for a short time while Holly sat out. Talucci earned another veteran stripe with a save, helping to keep his team in the battle.

Scoring for the Salty squad were Kevin Roman with a solo goal and Tyler Brewer hitting two.

With Mark Long in the goal for the Solid Rock team, Sato Real Estate’s Damir Glavan started the scoring in the first half of play. Teammates Zacharieah Anabtawi and Alex Landy added three points to the scoreboard for the win.

Landy shot for two points as the Sato Real Estate offense moved the soccer ball smoothly down the field.

Long’s counterpart, Paul Jennison for the Sato team had nine saves in the game, besting Long by one.

Holding a place in the middle of the pack, team Sato Real Estate should see the playoffs. Their 4-4-0 record is not as strong as the squad would like, but nice wins come at the best times in the season.

With three teams earning only two wins going into the final regular season game, Solid Rock Construction can work itself off the bottom of the rankings before going into the post-season action.

The last regularly scheduled games will be played on Thursday, May 23. The spring adult flag football season playoff bracket with 10 teams, as opposed to the usual eight, makes it so that the old league adage of “everyone makes the playoffs” is not true this season.

The outcome of the five games of this week’s action is crucial to decide which eight teams will move on to the quarter-final round of the playoffs.

The last teams in the four seeds will play two head-to-head games, resulting in the eighth and final playoff position. These games will be played on Wednesday, May 29. The playoffs start next Thursday night.

At the end of the single-elimination playoff games, the championship title will be earned on Thursday, June 13.

Jack Zaccagnino, playing for Solid Rock, topped the goalkeeper last week with six saves, but Cheesecake Cuties’ Thomas Holly had five stops. Also with five saves in their games were keeper Austin Guess, playing for The Gitt Team, and HSH’s Cyrus Ryan.

Topping the scoring for the older youth league, Renan Kesten shot four goals for The Gitt Team.

Winning the first game last Thursday night in the adult league, Ross Built Custom Homes got the win from a Sato Real Estate forfeit, the team’s first loss of the season.

Struggling to find their first victory, Pool America lost to Sandbar Seafood & Spirits by one goal. The win was the first of the season for the Sandbar team.

The Gulf Drive Café team won their second game by a single goal against Gulfview Windows & Doors.

Also struggling to put a win in the statistics this season, Slim’s Place lost to Moss Builders 5-2.

Adult goalie accolades go to Charles “Tuna” McCracken with 12 saves for Gulf Drive Café. Coming in a close second was Chris Klotz playing for Pool America with 11 stops.

Solid scoring throughout the league, with all of the teams having a roster of strong shooters, resulted in three players with two goals in their games. Pool America’s Murat Akay, Gulf Drive Café’s Eliza Faillace and Moss Builders’ Dean Hinterstoisser each put two points on the scoreboard for their teams.

Island soccer action continues at The Center with playoffs going into November.

The Center kicks off fall adult soccer

The Center kicks off fall adult soccer

ANNA MARIA – One week after the effects of Hurricane Idalia, the excitement of adult co-ed recreational soccer returned to the Island pitch at The Center.

Starting the season in a close 3-2 game against Gulf Drive Café, team captain Greg Ross brought his Ross Built Custom Homes squad onto the field looking like an American football team. As a local growing up on Anna Maria Island, Ross is no stranger to the fields at the community center, playing youth and adult sports over the years.

Ross’ roster includes his twin sons, Andrew and Jake. The Ross brothers cut their athletic teeth in the youth leagues on the very fields they are now playing on with their father as adults.

A team on the field, the Ross Built team includes several members of Ross’ team in the world of residential construction.

Longtime co-worker and friend Max Gazzo played in the goalkeeper position for Ross last Thursday night. Like the Ross boys and G. Ross himself, Gazzo grew up on the Island and played in the youth leagues at The Center, then the Anna Maria Island Community Center.

Credited with 10 saves in the game against the young Gulf Drive Café squad, Gazzo helped his team to the first win of the season.

Gazzo is joined on the soccer field by co-workers and Islanders John Coleman, Nate Talucci and Andrew Thomas. Ross’ sons also work in the family business.

Winning by a goal, the Ross Built team got three shots past Gulf Drive Café’s Charles “Tuna” McCracken, arguably one of the best goalies in the league. Singles by Daniel Hampton, Nicola Manni and J. Ross earned their team the win. A. Ross had a critical assist allowing for a goal.

McCracken had 11 big stops in the first game of the season, but playing without team captain Kevin Roman and Jana Whitehead could have been the difference in the opening matchup.

The Gulf Drive team includes three lifelong friends, Tyler Brewer, Javier Rivera and McCracken. Learning at Anna Maria Elementary School and playing at the community center together, the three teammates are joined by Helio Gomez, who also played youth sports at The Center.

Gomez scored one of two goals for the Gulf Drive Café team. Juan Vega put the other point on the scoreboard, along with an assist in the statistics.

Flavio Olvera is credited with the assist on Vega’s goal.

Off to a slow start to the season, the Gulf Drive Café squad hopes to win their first game against team Pool America. Pool America is seeking its first win of the season after a volatile loss against Moss Builders 5-1 in the final game of week one action.

The Ross Built team will face Moss Builders at the 9 p.m. game on Thursday night. There can be only one winner, squashing the hopes of the other team’s undefeated season.

Josh Sato’s team won by three goals against team Slim’s Place, led by team captain Yuri Pereira. Sato Real Estate plays Gulfview Windows & Doors in the 8 p.m. game, while Slim’s battles the Sandbar team.

Sandbar Seafood & Spirits lost 3-1 against Gulfview in the third game of the night.

With six games remaining in the regular season, the top seed going into the first round of playoffs is any team’s for the taking.

Solid Rock comes out on top

Solid Rock comes out on top

ANNA MARIA – The final week of regular season adult co-ed flag football play energized The Center gridiron last Thursday night. For the four teams in the middle of the pack, every play and every second mattered.

By the end of the night, team Solid Rock Construction captured the third-seed position in the first round of the playoffs, narrowly defeating the Salty Printing squad with a score of 14-12.

Despite a late-game injury, Tuna McCracken and the Solid Rock team won by two points in what proved to be a defensive battle. With 36 total flag pulls recorded by both teams, Evelyn Long led the league in flag pulls for the week.

Long’s eight flag pulls Thursday night put her in third to end the regular season in defensive stops. Her 29 total pulls were only topped by teammates Tyler Brewer and McCracken, each with 30 in the seven-game season.

With McCracken on the sideline, receiver Connor Ludwig took the snaps for the last several minutes of the game. Throwing for a touchdown to Brewer and receiving for one from McCracken, Ludwig helped clinch the team’s playoff position.

On the flip side, Brandon Rolland had the only offensive scoring for Salty while teammate Zaon William scored six points on defense for his team.

Williams also finished the season tied with Long for third in flag pulls with 29 big stops.

Making the scoring difference for Solid Rock Construction was Brewer’s two one-point conversions, giving the squad a marginal lead. Brewer had seven catches in the game, leading his team and adding to his season total of 38 receptions.

Solid Rock’s win put them in the third quarterfinal game bracket with Sandbar Seafood & Spirits. Sandbar lost to #7 Gulf Drive Café in the first game of the night, giving the Gulf Drive team only their second win of the season.

Playing in the last game this Thursday night against the second seed Moss Builders team, team Gulf Drive Café will need to play strong and with no mistakes.

Salty’s loss placed them in fifth position behind Cortez Deep Sea Fishing. In the second playoff game Thursday night at 7 p.m., the two teams will face off for a spot in the semifinal next week.

Playing in the heat of the 6 p.m. game, the underdogs of #8 The Banks Home Lending Team hope the curse of the first-place team continues to rear its ugly head as they face the top-seed Luxury Services team.

As the quarterback, Luxury’s Chase Richardson leads the league in passing touchdowns with 32 this season. Between them, The Banks Home Lending’s Cruz Rodriguez and Cory Banks managed to pass 20 total touchdowns in seven games.

Luxury Services also closed out the season number one and three for receiving touchdowns with Tim Holly finishing with 13 TD catches and Alonzo Lemus securing 11 scoring nabs.

The team’s regular season dominance continued on defense with Holly’s 11 QB sacks, as well as a total of 12 interceptions by teammates Derrick Carey, Jasmine Muldoon and Richardson, each with four picks.

This week’s play will see if the top team prevails or if the undefeated Luxury Services team has their championship hopes stopped short Thursday night.

ANNA MARIA – After six weeks of adult co-ed flag football games at The Center of Anna Maria Island, team Moss Builders is the victim of the undefeated team Luxury Services. The 40-point loss is uncharacteristic of any Moss Builders team that hits the field.

In the easy win, Luxury’s QB Chase Richardson threw for five touchdowns and took the football into the endzone for six points of his own. Defensively, Richardson contributed with two flag pulls.

The Luxury defense prevented the lethal arm of Ryan Moss from being effective, holding him to just one scoring pass to James Roadman for Moss Builders. Roadman’s catch for six points compliments his defensive interception and stop.

The Moss Builders’ loss was not for the lack of effort by the defense. With 14 recorded flag pulls, the Moss D put the pressure on Richardson, sacking him once and nabbing two interceptions. Isaiah Lambert, for Moss Builders, is credited with the Richardson sack and a flag pull in addition to his single catch.

Peggy Smith, playing as the required female on the team, caught five receptions for positive yardage. Defensively Greg Moss and Nick Cavalluzzi each had four flag pulls, helping to keep the Moss Builders team in the game.

With the victory, Luxury Services’ Tim Holly had the hot hands with seven catches, including one for a TD and a two-point conversion. Holly carried the football into the endzone and had a safety to add points to the scoreboard.

Teammates Alonzo Lemus and Derrick Carey each caught five Richardson passes. Lemus scored two touchdowns, while Cary was hit for one.

Jasmine Muldoon scored six points with a catch and contributed on defense with two flag pulls.

The Cortez Deep Sea Fishing team plays Moss Builders Thursday as the last regular game of the season at 9:00 p.m.

Beach Bums, Salty Printing win on Island pitch

Beach Bums, Salty Printing win on Island pitch

Working hard all season paid off for the 8- to 10-year-old league team Beach Bums last Tuesday night. With the talents of Camden Rudacille in goal, the team finished the game with their first win of the season against Solid Rock Construction, 3-0.

Following the footsteps of his dad, Scott Rudacille, and uncle, Mark Rudacille, the Beach Bum’s goalkeeper made five critical stops in the victory. The tough defense shut out the Solid Rock offense in week three action.

Beach Bum’s Dylan Sato used his power leg to score two points in the game, along with a single goal by Miles Moss.

Isaac Roadman made big stops for Solid Rock Construction as the team’s goalie for the game. Despite best efforts by Roadman and his teammates, they could not capture their second win.

A forfeit gave Salty Printing their first W for the season in the adult co-ed soccer league. Will the win be the burst of momentum the young team needs to make it past the first round of playoffs on Thursday, May 19?

Salty Printing plays the Shady Lady team who won their second game of the season against Servis First Bank 4-2. Servis First rotated goalkeepers through the 40 minutes of official play.

Max Gazzo, Daniel Hampton and Tim Holly finished the game with four, three and two stops, respectively. On the other side of the field, returning to the league this season, Adam Mott made six saves, only allowing two by him.

The two goals scored by Tim Holly and Keith Mahoney for Servis First Bank just was not enough last Thursday night.

Nate Welch had two points for Shady Lady, while Juan Pablo and Jake Parsons each scored solo goals in the game.

Goalies were busy in the final game of the night with the Sato Real Estate versus Progressive Cabinetry match-up. With six official saves for each side, the fire power of Sato Real Estate was too much for the Progressive Cabinetry defense.

Sean Flynn and Ben Sato each shared keeper duty for Sato Real Estate. Flynn made four key stops and Sato saved two Progressive shots.

Two assists and three goals were recorded for Sato Real Estate’s Danny Anderson. Damir Glavan added two more points to his overall season tally. Selena Gonzalez and Will Kretzmann each put a single point on the scoreboard for the victors.

Finishing last week with a 2-4-0 season, Progressive Cabinetry’s Steve Oelfke and Robb Marshall worked hard to keep the point deficit at a minimum. Oelfke finished the game with six stops and Marshall made two saves.

The point scoring for Progressive was spread among four players: Michael Bolognone, Edwin Picardo, Kali Richardson and Timo Vecchio.

This week, Progressive Cabinetry faces the undefeated Moss Builders team, coming into the game with a 6-0 record. This final regular season game will determine the quarterfinal playoff bracket.

The adult soccer league’s playoffs will start on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m. One week later, the semifinal games will be played among the final four teams.

All eight teams still have a chance to play for the Paul “Ace” Hayward cup on Thursday, June 2. Can team Moss Builders stay on top?

HSH Designs’ kiddos remain undefeated on the pitch

Three games into the regular season and Team HSH Designs looks to be the team to beat in the youth soccer league at The Center of Anna Maria Island in the 8-10-year-old league. Undefeated going into the third week of play, HSH went up against Team Ugly Grouper which was missing two critical players.

With the Zaccagnino brothers sick, the Cusack siblings Ceegan and Clancy played a tough game against the full HSH Designs squad.

Less than three minutes into the game, Bam Gartman scored the first of two goals, giving his team the early 1-0 lead. Teammate Dylan Sato hit the net. Along with Gartman’s second goal of the game, HSH had a three-goal lead.

The first half of the game had Cale Rudacille, who made four saves, in the goal for HSH Designs and Ugly Grouper worked with Clancy Cusack as the team’s keeper.

With a three-point lead and after 15 minutes of play, Sterling Holiday took advantage of Ugly Grouper’s goalkeeper out of position to score the fourth goal of the game for HSH.

To close out the first half of play, Nixon Conner showed his ball-handling skills for his Ugly Grouper team.

Clancy Cusack, credited with seven saves in the game, continued in the keeper position to start the second half of play.

Savanna Coba’s shot was stopped and was followed by a shot by Rudacille that went left of the post.

With four minutes left on the game clock, Coba scored HSH Designs’ fifth and final goal of the game.

Shootout at The Center: Ugly Grouper takes indoor soccer championship

ANNA MARIA – The anticipation of 50 minutes of indoor soccer action brought friends, family and league players to The Center of Anna Maria Island to watch the final game of the adult indoor soccer season. The championship game did not disappoint.

After years of no indoor action, Chris Klotz’s Ugly Grouper team came into the night as the underdog, but a contender nonetheless. Team Progressive Cabinetry, lead by captain Kevin Roman, started the game short one player but quickly dominated the game.

The first 13 minutes of play were virtually all going Progressive Cabinetry’s way with three goals scored by Roman along with a goal and assist by Palmetto Elementary School first grade teacher Jessica Williams.

Ugly Grouper’s Yuri Pereira assisted veterinarian Connor Bystrom with his first of five goals in the game, putting the score at 4-1.

At the 15th minute of play, the tides drastically turned Ugly Grouper’s way. In a matter of two minutes, Bystrom hit the net twice with assists by Pereira and Klotz. Olaf Krause found the goal after a strong attack.

The Ugly Grouper effort tied the game at 4-4 with less than eight minutes left in the first half of the final game of the season.

Bystrom made the go-ahead goal shot with Progressive Cabinetry goalkeeper Diego Felipe out of position.

Less than a minute later Klotz temporarily widened the scoring gap with another strike against Felipe who had 17 saves in the night.

With the score at 4-6, Felipe moved out of the keeper position to score his only goal in the game. Felipe attempted one last shot before the half that was stopped by Ugly Grouper goalie John Haggerty.

To start the second half of the game, Klotz made his next goal three minutes after the whistle, putting the score to 5-7.

Klotz made a follow-up run down the court only to be stopped by powerhouse Steve Oelfke for Progressive Cabinetry.

Williams and Roman tied the game back up with consecutive goals at the 30th and 37th minute of play.

Pereira made sure the tie did not last for long with his solo goal of the game.

After strong defensive play by both teams, including backfield attacks by Erin Felipe and James Roadman for Ugly Grouper, the scoring went back and forth until the end of regulation time play.

Goals by Roman and Bystrom ended the game with the score tied at 9-9.

The championship game couldn’t end in a tied score. A five-minute overtime was implemented.

After five solid minutes of defensive attacks by both sides, the 9-9 score remained on the scoreboard.

Ultimately the indoor soccer champion was named with a shootout. Each team picked their first four shooters to go against Klotz as the keeper for Ugly Grouper and Brayan Felipe for Progressive Cabinetry.

The shootout excitement filled the community center gym with players and spectators waiting with bated breath for each shot.

Williams was selected by her team to take the first shot of the event. Her successful strike against B. Felipe put the pressure on Krause, the first shooter for Ugly Grouper.

Krause’s solid shot tied up the game once more. Roman’s missed shot open the door for Ugly Grouper to once again take the lead.

Bystrom hit his shot and was followed by a goal by Progressive’s Murat Akay.

Felipe stopped the shot of Pereira, but he missed his own penalty kick against Klotz.

Going against Oelfke, Klotz missed his own shot, leading to Oelfke’s failed goal attempt.

With all the pressure on his back, Krause was the sixth shooter for Ugly Grouper looking to end the tie. Krause’s shot hit the net, making the next shot by Williams a life or death shot.

If Progressive’s Williams hit her goal shot, the game would’ve returned to a tie score, but a miss would give the win to Ugly Grouper.

Despite her best efforts, Williams’ shot was stopped by Klotz, ending the championship indoor soccer game with Ugly Grouper as the first titleholders in the sport for a number of years at The Center.

Team captain Ray Gardner, for Moss Builders, threw for two touchdowns and made a touchdown of his own along with eight receptions.

Mike Gillum and Chad Woods each had touchdown catches to add to the duo of touchdowns by Jon Moss and Lexi Sato.

Game two also ended in a runaway game with underdogs Team Hashmark Sports the victors. With each team playing with four on the field, due to the absence of key player Brianna Roberts for Lancaster Designs.

Gulfview ekes by Flynn Law

The third week of adult co-ed soccer play started off quick for Gulfview Windows and Doors with a goal one minute in by newcomer Keith Mahoney. In what would be the first of four points for Mahoney, Gulfview took the early 1-0 lead.

Lexi Sato, of Flynn Law, took a shot of her own in the fifth minute of the game only to have it saved by Gulfview goalkeeper Jordan DeMers, who had a total of 13 saves in the game.

Team captain Kevin Roman put the first point on the scoreboard for his Flynn Law squad after beating defender Ed Moss. DeMers got his hand on the soccer ball, but there was too much speed behind the strike.

DeMers was ready for Roman’s next shot, preventing the go-ahead goal.

Gulfview’s Aaron Parkin, who went scoreless in the game, took his first shot in the 12th minute of the match. Parkin’s shot went hard off the back of Flynn Law’s Olaf Krause.

The hot foot of Ashley Friszman, for Gulfview, could not find the next shot in this game. Going just left of the post, Friszman’s first shot showed why the defense could not dismiss the lone female on the field.

Showing teamwork and an excellent passing game, Sato found Roman in the middle of the field just outside of the box. In perfect position, Roman shot quick and hard just pass DeMers, moving his team ahead 1-2.

With the corner kick, Gulfview found the opportunity to tie the game. Perfect placement of the soccer ball and field position by Mahoney lead to the fourth goal of the game, tying it up 2-2.

Looking to take the lead back, Parkin crossed to Moss, but the ball went off his foot wrong sending it in the wrong direction out of bounds, leading to the end of the first half of play.

The second half started off slow, but the momentum and action soon picked up with a hard low rocket shot by Roman that went through DeMer’s hands. This third and final goal for Roman and his team gave him the hat trick.

In the 38th minute of the game, Mahoney got his own hat trick, once again taking the game to a tied score, 3-3.

The scoreboard showed just under two minutes of time left in the game when Friszman took her second shot, putting the ball into the hands into Flynn Law goalie Mark Rudacille, who had 10 saves in the game.

After a handball in the box by Flynn Law during a corner kick by Gulfview, Mahoney took the penalty kick with no time on the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Rudacille got a hand on the ball, but could not keep it out of the net, giving Mahoney his fourth goal in the game and his team the win, with the score 4-3.
