Football weather fuels Center sports

ANNA MARIA – The winter chill kept the 8- to 10-year-old players from taking the field last week, but the older kids and adults battled it out during a slight break in the weather.

On Monday night, the Sato Real Estate team only allowed Sandhoff Construction to score eight points in the 20-8 game. Quarterback Blake Bower threw the touchdown pass to Grady Sandhoff for six points. The additional two points came from a David Evans sack in the Sato Real Estate end zone for the safety.

QB Brandon Sato dominated the game statistics on offense and defense for the Sato Real Estate team. Ashton Bennet was Sato’s target for a touchdown and two single point-after conversions.

Sato ran for a TD and intercepted a Bower pass for a pick-six, helping lead his team to victory. Defensively, the Sato team had 15 recorded flag pulls compared to the six defensive stops by the Sandhoff squad.

Team Shady Lady could not take advantage of the 10 catches made by Stone Mitchell in their loss to Moss Builders. With the final score of 39-6, the arms of Mason Moss and Austin Guess just could not be stopped.

Renan Kesten caught the three scoring passes by Moss and Guess. The receiving statistics for the Moss Builders team speak volumes about the depth of the team. Putting two additional points on the scoreboard were Guess and Bryson Frady, scoring a one-point conversion.

Working as a receiver, Guess had six catches in the game, while Kesten nabbed five of Moss’ throws. Teammates added five additional catches totaling 17 compared to 11 by the Shady Lady Horticultural Services team.

Shady Lady showed their potential with a throw from Charlie Neri to Stone Mitchell for the six points in week two action.

Team Jiffy Lube defeated Solid Rock Air Conditioning 15-6 in a closer matchup. Kyle Mims hit Carson Long for the touchdown and six points for Solid Rock.

Luke VanDuinen, playing for Jiffy Lube, threw to Braelyn Curtis and Callin Westfall for 12 points. Curtis sacked the Solid Rock QB in the end zone resulting in two points for Jiffy Lube.

Adding a point for Jiffy, Tyler Trout caught a VanDuinen throw for a successful point after a touchdown to help with the team win.

Poppos Taqueria and Salty Printing played a tough game, ending with Salty coming out on top 13-7. Tyler Higman found Grayson Cohen for Poppos in the week two loss. Teammate Sawyer Leibfried found the end zone, adding a point to the scoreboard.

Quarterback Jahkari Steele made the difference in the game for Salty Printing, throwing a touchdown pass to Turner Worth and intercepting the Poppos quarterback for a six-point run back after the turnover.

Securing an extra point in the game, Asher Patel was Steele’s go-to to help secure the W.

The teens and adults took to the gridiron last week with victory posted in the statistics for Cortez Florida Vacations, Moss Builders and Solid Rock Air Conditioning.

Playing back-to-back nights last week, the adults go into weeks 5 and 6 this week again with games on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Curse of the first continues for Center soccer

Curse of the first continues for Center soccer

ANNA MARIA – The adult co-ed recreational soccer playoff games kicked off last Thursday night at the Island’s community center. After seven weeks of exciting soccer play, eight teams battled it out in four action-packed matches.

To start the night at The Center, first-seed Duncan Real Estate took the field as the team to beat, losing only one game in the regular season. Their opponent, the last-place Moss Builders team, had nothing to lose and a seat in the semifinals to gain with the win.

With friends and family cheering on both sides, the underdogs Moss Builders ended the first half of play with a two-goal lead against the Duncan squad.

The Duncan team struggled to click as a team in the game. Moving the ball down the field was an effort against a motivated Moss Builder defense.

After nearly two halves of play in the heat of the early evening, the game was tied with only minutes left in the game.

Duncan Real Estate goalkeeper, Charles “Tuna” McCracken, uncharacteristically let two soccer balls past him with an absent defense at the end of the game. McCracken finished with seven saves, letting five go.

McCracken’s Moss Builders’ counterpart David Moss had eight big stops to help his team to victory.

The hard strikes of Adam Bujarski and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos, each with two goals in the quarterfinal game, helped the Moss team advance in the playoffs. Teammate Cemal Duzgun scored a solo goal in the match.

Duzgun and Pedro Gonzalez are credited with assists in the goal scoring for Moss Builders.

Despite the defeat, the Duncan Real Estate team put three points on the scoreboard. Team captain Kevin Roman scored his last two goals of the season and Erica Nielsen had a nice goal for Duncan. The offensive efforts, including assists by Tyler Brewer and Murat Akay, just were not enough to give their team a W.

Moss Builders moves on in the playoffs, facing Pool America at on Thursday night, May 18, at 7 p.m. at The Center. Pool America beat Gulfview Windows & Doors after a tie in regulation play.

After eight PK shots, Pool America came out on top, with goals by Nate Welch, Eduardo Schlueter and Jamie Hutchison. Dean Hinterstoisser, as the third shooter for Pool America, surprisingly missed his shot.

Keith Mahoney, shooting for Gulfview, was the only one of the four shooters for his team to make the shot.

Goalkeepers Mark Long, for Gulfview Windows & Doors, and Pool America’s Robb Marshall, both made critical stops for their teams with six and seven saves, respectively.

In other adult soccer semifinal playoff action, the Sandbar team faces the Vintage Beach squad in the semifinals at 8 p.m. this week. Vintage Beach defeated Sato Real Estate by one goal, while the Solid Rock Construction team lost to Sandbar Seafood & Spirits with a final score of 5-3.

This week in youth soccer, the 8- to 10-year-olds started league playoff action on the small pitch. The 11- to 13-year-old league finished their regular season games on Tuesday and will start playoff play next week.

As the summer heat approaches, spring soccer at The Center starts coming to a close with championship play in the coming weeks.

Team Gulf Drive Café still undefeated

Team Gulf Drive Café still undefeated

ANNA MARIA – Coming into week three of youth recreational soccer play, the Gulf Drive Café team was on top with two wins. Their week three opponents, HSH Designs, earned a win and fought hard for a tie in the past weeks.

Keeping both teams’ goalkeepers busy, the offenses made shots past defenders for two halves of play.

The leadership of Cyrus Ryan in goal helped the Gulf Drive Café squad to their third victory. Listening to the chatter of Ryan, Gulf Drive players shifted and changed field position to keep the HSH team moving and guessing.

Ryan finished the game with six saves. His counterpart, Chase Castagna, fought hard in the net for his team, also closing out the match with six critical stops.

On offense for HSH, Cecelia Kroth made a beautiful goal, scoring her team’s only goal.

Gulf Drive Café selflessly passed the ball, getting the soccer ball to the feet of Theo Aupelle, Luke Dellenger, Josiah MacDonald and Jayden Sparks for goals. Kegan McGalde is credited with an assist in the game.

The scoring power of the 11- to 13-year-old league leader, Gulf Drive Café, was just too much for their week three opponent.

Going into the coming week, the teen league’s Shady Lady Horticultural Services looks for their first win. Last week, the squad came close with a 3-2 loss against the Moss Builders team.

Moss Builders finished the week with a 1-1-1 record.

As the season approaches the playoffs, the oldest youth recreation league championship game is still in reach for all four teams at The Center.

Adult co-ed soccer heats up in the night chill

The temperatures dropped while the competition on the Island pitch heated up Thursday night in the adult soccer league.

With one game left in the regular season, Sato Real Estate sealed the first place seed with the win against Eason Builders Group. Both teams were missing key players in the matchup. Sato Real Estate team captain Josh Sato was absent from the action, as was Eason Builders’ Sean Flynn.

Playing without goalkeeper Cliff Powell, Eason Builders Group scrambled to fill the position with Ray Gardner, Yuri Pereira and Greg DeMeuse and took the field with no substitute players.

Despite their best efforts, Eason Builders Group came up short against the skillful Sato squad.

In the mix for the second seed position, Jiffy Lube handily beat Slim’s Place. The goals by Aaron Parkin and Diego Felipe was no match against Danny Anderson’s Jiffy Lube team. Anderson’s single goal, finisher by Mike Brusso, two goals by Nathan Kragt and Eliza Faillace’s hat trick gave the team a five-goal win.

Lancaster Design picked up its third win of the season against Moss Builders, which also has three wins. In his second season, Zackary Lieb proves to be a consistent force on the field, putting up two goals in the game.

In addition to Lieb’s goals, Lancaster Design’s win was aided by scores by team captain Kris Yavalar, Cemal Duzgan and Sumiko Chipman.

Moss Builders’ Robert Armstrong and Eduardo Vera each scored a single goal, while newcomer Eva Howland found the net twice.

As the night grew colder, Ross Built Construction nearly won its first game of the season against AMI Locals. New to the Ross Built team, Riley Moore’s goal helped his team’s efforts. Vince Circharo, with two goals, and team captain Greg Ross’ point put the team within one point of a tie.

With the win, AMI Locals remains in the middle of the standing pack with Jiffy Lube, Lancaster Design, Moss Builders and Eason Builders.

The last regular season game on Thursday, Dec. 6, is followed by the playoff games on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and Thursday, Dec. 13. A champion will be named on Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.
