Clad in matching black suits, playing vintage instruments, accompanied by era-evolving video footage and recreating the looks and sounds of The Beatles legendary “Ed Sullivan Show” appearances, the first third of the show began with “She Loves You” and “All My Loving” and included several early Beatles’ classics such as “Roll Over Beethoven” (written by Chuck Berry), “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Saw Her Standing There.” The energetic, joy-filled opening set concluded with “Ticket to Ride.”

After a brief intermission that al- lowed for costume changes, the second set highlighted the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album that The Beatles never collectively performed live because they quit touring a year before that album’s 1967 release. The second set also included other songs from The Beatles middle era.

The “Sgt. Pepper’s” set began and ended with the title track and its reprise and included McBurney, as Ringo, singing “With a Little Help From my Friends.” The set also included “When I’m 64,” “I Am the Walrus” (from the “Magical Mystery Tour” album) and “A Day in the Life.”

As was the case all night, the quartet’s musicianship and stellar lead and harmony vocals were further enhanced by a superb mix from the sound man and an effective light show.

The opening act

Performing solo with backing tracks that he created, local singer and guitarist Skip Eaton opened the show with a set of rock and blues that included his original compositions and covers of songs written by Stevie Ray Vaughn, J.J. Cale and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally.” Eaton’s set included a powerful blues song that stated, “the blues got nowhere to go” and he closed his set with The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” in which he nailed that song’s signature guitar solo.

Post-show reaction

The Bradenton Gulf Island Concert Series is sponsored by Ed Chiles’ Sandbar restaurant, Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages and Bradenton Area Arts & Culture (the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau).

After the show, Chiles said, “It was a great show. It was a rockin’ time and a quality performance in a place that is the most important community gathering place on this Island. This venue has tremendous potential.”

Chiles noted the concert series serves as a fundraiser for The Center and the proceeds help fund the wide variety of programs The Center offers for residents and visitors of all ages.

The Center’s Jim McDaniel said, “What a start to the Center’s concert season. We had more than 600 people in attendance.”

Bradenton Beach resident and city commissioner Ralph Cole said, “When you know all the words to all the songs it’s a great time.”

Anna Maria resident Charlie Trygg said, “I really enjoyed the experience. I got to see and hear songs that were never performed live by The Beatles.”

The next concert in the series will be Tommy DeCarlo on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Fashion show raises funds for AMI Garden Club

ANNA MARIA – The Anna Maria Island Garden Club raised more than $10,000 during its annual fundraising fashion show and luncheon on Jan. 19.

The fashion show at The Center of Anna Maria Island featured community members as models, and some canine models too.

The featured fashions were provided by The Island Cabana, Pink & Navy, Island Charms, AMI Beach & Dog Supply and howluckyami.

AMI Garden Club member Deanie Sebring was in charge of this year’s event.

“The addition of many small stores rather than highlighting just one really brought the community together, and the addition of men and dogs to the show added a comedic factor,” she said.

“I thought it was a spectacular event. Everyone seemed to be so happy to be together again. We had over $7,000 in basket merchandise and gift certificates given to us by the stores and businesses on the Island. The vendors stepped up and gave so much, along with 11 local artists donating their art. The attendees had a fabulous time, enjoyed the lunch, aggressively bid on the art and purchased an immense amount of raffle tickets. The Center made it all possible by giving the Garden Club the space and the use of the tables and chairs,” Sebring said.

Led by Zan Fuller, Garden Club members prepared the luncheon that included chicken salad served on a croissant. Tickets were $30 per person, with an additional $3 donation from those who enjoyed the wine provided by The Sandbar restaurant.

Rock legend to play The Center

Rock legend to play The Center

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – The Center of Anna Maria Island is going to rock this Friday night as legendary musician Simon Kirke takes the stage with Chicago-based band The Empty Pockets.

Kirke, one of the founding members of rock bands Bad Company and Free, will headline the show June 11 as a part of the Bradenton Gulf Islands Concert Series presented by the Bradenton Area Convention Center and Visitors Bureau along with The Sandbar Restaurant.

The show will be the first one Kirke’s played since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down entertainment venues and concert tours in early 2020. And after nearly 15 months without a live show, the rock icon said he’s looking forward to getting back on the stage and playing some of his best-known hits from his solo career, Bad Company and Free. Some of those hits include “Alright Now” from Free, “Bad Company,” “Ready for Love,” “Shooting Star” and “Feel Like Making Love” from Bad Company. And with the crowd singing along to his songs, Kirke said hearing and playing the hits still gives him a thrill, inspiring him to keep performing for audiences.

During the show, Kirke won’t just be rocking the stage from his drum kit, the multi-talented musician said he’ll also be singing during the set, which he said brings back memories of his years performing with Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. In addition to the drums, Kirke also plays guitar and keyboard.

The show at The Center will be Kirke’s first trip to Anna Maria Island, something he says he’s excited about.

“I’m very much looking forward to coming down there,” he said in a June 4 talk with The Sun.

Kirke’s been in the music industry for about 50 years. After making a deal with his parents to either find a gig as a drummer with a band or go to college, Kirke said the decision nearly came down to his two-year deadline before he found a place playing with the Black Cat Bones. And it’s all been uphill from there, though if he had lost the wager with his parents and gone to university, Kirke said he thinks he would have pursued photojournalism.

“I’ve had a lot of good breaks in my life,” he said, “but I’m of the opinion that somewhere along the way you make your own luck and I think that’s what happened to me. I’ve been very lucky to go from Free in 1973 to go to Bad Company.”

Kirke has been a member of Bad Company since its formation in 1974.

Of the upcoming show at The Center, Kirke said he’s very much anticipating the June 11 concert and getting back in the groove of performing live.

“I’m really looking forward to reuniting with The Empty Pockets,” he said. “They’re so diverse. They have an amazing songbook. They’re all wonderful instrumentalists.”

“Also performing. I love performing,” Kirke added.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the music beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $60-75 each online. The concert will take place on the field at The Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, rain or shine. Make sure to bring your own lawn chair and a face mask to use when not able to social distance. No outside drinks will be permitted though The Sandbar will have a cash bar onsite. Street parking and complimentary valet parking are available.
