With the upcoming Holmes Beach mayoral and commission races to be decided in the November election, voters have a responsibility to learn as much as possible about our potential city leaders.
Has the candidate:
• Demonstrated sustained interest in city government before entering the race?
• Regularly attended important City Commission meetings, and will they attend meetings if not elected?
• Participated in discussions about the community’s future?
• Interacted with neighbors and demonstrated a commitment to community unity and preserving neighborhood values?
• Prepared to elevate the interests of Holmes Beach over personal agendas?
• Committed to listening to residents, examining the facts, working with fellow commissioners and making decisions based on what is best for the community – and not advancing individual interests or political agendas?
Voters may welcome new candidates who have become actively engaged out of a sincere interest in their community and not the perpetuation of a political career. Fresh perspectives coupled with genuine civic involvement can be a valuable addition to local government. The key question is whether those seeking office have demonstrated a genuine commitment to serving the residents, participated in the work of government and acted in the city’s best interest.
Some candidates do not attend city meetings and do not actively campaign, but their presence on the ballot may still impact the election outcomes.
Election season often brings political distractions and controversy. Sometimes there are personal attacks, misrepresentations and political maneuvering as campaigns intensify.
As Holmes Beach has grown and faced increasingly complex challenges, serving as the mayor or as a commissioner is no longer a part-time civic commitment. The responsibilities of managing growth, infrastructure, public safety, budgeting and quality-of-life concerns require significant time, attention and dedication.
Voters should remain focused on candidate character, qualifications and involvement. An informed electorate is the best defense against political gamesmanship. Your vote will determine if we elect people who are selfless and genuinely prepared to lead the city through its next chapter.
