Game-changing trolling motors

The new Power-Pole Move PV features a digital readout right on the housing and indicator lights on the head to provide anglers with all the information they need with a glance allowing them to concentrate on catching fish. – Rusty Chinnis | Sun

As someone who has been using trolling motors since the days of analog motors and air switches, the progression of technology to electronic brushed motors, and now electronic brushless motors, has been game-changing.

The leader in the evolution of the modern-day electronic anchoring system, John Oliverio (Power-Pole), has now applied that technology to trolling motors. While not the first to introduce brushless motors, Power-Pole has incorporated the operation of the Power-Pole and the Move PV trolling motor, allowing anglers to control and anchor their boats with one rechargeable controller.

The journey began in 1997, nearby in Sarasota Bay, with the frustration of deploying an anchor to stop his fishing boat. My first actual experience was when we installed one (courtesy of Power-Pole) on the Suncoast Waterkeeper (SCWK) patrol boat. It was a perfect “marriage,” as one of the reasons SCWK used the system was to prevent damage to the grass beds during their work in the area waters.

I was so impressed with the system that I installed one on my flats boat. When I inquired about a friend’s Power-Pole trolling motor, he told me how much he loved the motor and that it would allow me to operate my Power-Pole anchor and the trolling motor with that one controller.

According to the company, the new Move PV creates 30% more power than other trolling motors, while remaining quieter in both steering and propulsion. Their brushless motor is available in 24V or 36V systems and produces up to 100 pounds of thrust, allowing it to perform better at lower RPMs.

The Move distinguishes its motor from other well-known brands using materials engineered to protect the unit with multi-layered corrosion resistance. The trolling shaft is constructed of aerospace-grade titanium and carries a lifetime unconditional warranty.

Their Anchor Mode allows fishermen to quietly maintain position while focusing on fishing. The Vector Heading feature follows a straight course down a bank or offshore drift, while their “Follow-A-Route” feature allows the angler to use a Power-Pole app to set a route for the motor to follow.

The Move is available in two versions: the Move ZR, a model commonly used on bass boats, and the Move PV, a pivoting version used on saltwater and big-water boats. One of the features that I found particularly handy was Power-Pole’s lift deployment system, which makes deploying and stowing easy, with negligible effort.

With one year of free ProNav support included, the Move is a complete fishing system right out of the box. That’s game-changing for anglers.
