BRADENTON BEACH – The pier-like beach groin near the 10th Street South beach access point is temporarily closed.
But despite the barriers, the orange cones and the signs put in place by Manatee County that say “Keep Out,” some undeterred groin users continue to access the temporarily closed structure.
When contacted by The Sun, Manatee County Director of Natural Resources Charlie Hunsicker explained the reason for the temporary groin closure.
“About 10 or 12 years ago, a sealant was placed between the slabs and over the years that sealant has eroded, leaving small gaps which are to be expected,” Hunsicker said on April 16.
He said there is nothing structurally wrong with the beach groins, but the gaps between the slabs could present a tripping hazard.

“The gaps are intentional to allow for slight movement,” Hunsicker said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve had them closed temporarily.”
He said a sealant material has been ordered and he expects it to be applied to all the beach groins around the beginning of May.
“I’ve asked the lifeguards to remind people to stay off,” Hunsicker said.
The Bradenton Beach Police Department has enforcement jurisdiction over that area and Police Chief John Cosby said his department is enforcing the county’s temporary groin closure.
