BRADENTON BEACH – The owner and operators of the paid parking lot at 101 Bridge Street met the city’s 10-day compliance extension deadline and are able to continue those business operations without interruption.

In an Oct. 29 email to The Sun, Building Official Ben Carr said the parking lot was now in compliance with the terms of the temporary use permit.

On Aug. 20, the commission granted permit applicant Shawn Kaltea a one-year extension of an existing temporary use permit that allowed a paid parking lot to operate at the west end of Bridge Street, near the Gulf Drive intersection.

The one-year temporary use permit extension was contingent on certain upgrades and repairs being completed within 45 days. Those upgrades included the installation of a landscape buffer around the perimeter, parking lot resurfacing, the installation of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking spaces, rubber parking stops to prevent sand and debris from going into the road, striping, weed removal and sidewalk cleanup.

The work was not completed by the Oct. 4 deadline. During the Oct. 15 city commission meeting, the commission granted the parking lot operators 10 additional business days to come into compliance or face the revocation of the temporary use permit.

There are now four Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant parking spots in the 92-space parking lot, two of which are van-accessible. The previously installed 57 stone surfaces for the ADA-compliant spaces were removed and now provide even surfaces. Pitch apple plants were planted around the perimeter of the parking lot, and the rubber stops and striping are in place.
