ANNA MARIA – A group of youngsters at The Center of Anna Maria Island’s summer camp literally got their feet wet when learning the art of skimboarding.
Skimboarding is one of a variety of specialty camp activities offered in addition to the regular camp program throughout the summer at The Center.
Each morning, with skimboards in hand, campers ranging from kindergarten-age through ninth grade walked up Magnolia Avenue to the beach access at the end of the road. The sessions ran for two hours Monday through Thursday.
Evan Talucci, owner of AMI Skim and Surf for the past three years, instructed the summer campers.
“Around seven is about the best age to start to learn, but even for the younger kids, the goal is to just have fun,” Talucci said.
Because of Tropical Storm Bertha, the water at the beginning of the week was too rough for some of the younger kids to skimboard in the Gulf.
Fortunately, there was a huge puddle on the beach where kids practiced their gliding and balancing skills for the first couple of days of the camp.
“I just did this because of some of these kids’ swimming abilities,” Talucci said.
