Enrico Beissert settles the ball for Wash Family Construction
with Island Pest Control's team captain Kevin Roman in hot pursuit.

The Center's adult co-ed recreational soccer league, with nearly 100 players this season, match up Thursday nights for head-to-head battle. This season boasts nine teams, and each week eight of those teams fight for the win and standing leading to the playoffs. For the first time in the league's history, not every team will make the post-regular season play, making every victory critical.

This week, the most senior team captain faced the youngest captain in the feature game of the week. Lyn Clark, local author, holds down the helm for Team Wash Family Construction (WFC) while Manatee High School graduate Kevin Roman leads Team Island Pest Control. Roman, former Braden River Soccer Club player, is in his second season in the Island league and stepped up to captain last year in his inaugural year.

The game also started with the battle of the Sato brother goalies. Jason Sato, veteran league goalie for Wash Family Construction took goals opposite of Ben Sato, who more recently started playing in the community's league.

With no off sides played in the league, offensive positioning at the goal proved to be an effective strategy for WFC Thursday night. Five minutes into the game Jennifer Sayko scored the first goal of the game, advancing Team Wash Family's score to 1-0.

Putting a second goal in the net, Sayko toe poked the point off the hand of B. Sato after the assist by Rico Beissert. WFC quickly scored again with the corner kick by Murat Akay, who had three goals in the game.

Island Pest Control's Lexi Braxton Sato proved why she was the third round pick for her team, confidently controlling the ball around multiple defenders as she drove the ball down the field, before taking a shot that was stopped by brother-in-law, J. Sato.

Goal number four for WFC was scored by Akay, with a follow-up score by Andrew Lewis, newcomer to the league.

Picking up the hat-trick, Akay increased WFC's lead to 6-0, despite an awesome diving save attempt by B. Sato.

Trying to put points on the board for his team, Roman took a half-field shot that went just right of the post. WFC's Clark performed for his team scoring the seventh goal of the game.

In the 14th minute, Beissert scored his first goal of the game.

Playing with a clear disadvantage with only six players the entire game, giving them no substitutions, Island Pest Control continued to fight hard in the second half of play. Island Pest Control's Frank Agnelli, who has traditionally been a force to be reckoned with in goal, took a goal shot that went over the net against J. Sato.

Making a strong offensive move, L. Sato, Roman and John Coleman moved the ball down the field and approached the WFC net with Lewis as the lone defender. L. Sato passed the ball to Roman, who shot the ball into the net for Island Pest Control's first goal of the game.

With momentum in the half, Agnelli stole the ball from Akay at near half-field and took the ball for the shot that whizzed by J. Sato, closing the scoring gap to 8-2.

Beissert scored again for WFC nine minutes into the second half of the game. The 10th goal for WFC drove L. Sato to score, taking the score to 10-3.

Sean Flynn, credited with two goals in the game, replaced J. Sato in goal, giving him the opportunity to play on the field. A strong corner kick by J. Sato right to Beissert with five minutes left in the game initially came short of the goal. Beissert continued his pursuit and shot the 11th goal for WFC. Additional scores by each team, ended the game with the score 12-4.

More than halfway through the season, each of the nine teams are battling for playoff position, while surviving injuries, absences, roster changes and hard-fought losses.
