Francesco Manino takes the ball to the goal for Tyler’s Ice Cream past
defenders Dalton Guthrie and Bryson Higgins.

Four youth teams in the 11-to-13-year-old league went head-to-head with each team playing eight games leading to the first round of playoff games on Tuesday, Nov. 3. On Friday night, Wash Family Construction played Tyler’s Ice Cream showing how far the team had come during the season. Without two of its key players, Sean Rodriguez and Conal Cassidy, Team Wash fought hard and challenged the squad co-coached by Rob Alderson, owner of Tyler’s Ice Cream.

Sam Waterman started in goal for Wash Family Construction, coached by owner Darrin Wash. Ava Alderson protected her team’s net for the first half of the game. After two minutes of play, Francesco Manino scored the first goal for Tyler’s Ice Cream, dribbling the ball from mid-field before striking.

Three minutes later, Waterman stopped the first goal attempt by Tyler’s Ice Cream’s Javier Rivera. Rivera found success in a second opportunity when the ball ricocheted off of Waterman brining the score to 2-0 with five minutes on the clock.

Rain Cooper and Fiona Turner-Leathem held strong defense for Wash Family Construction. With confidence and growing skill Maddy Rogers put the soccer ball in the goal for coach Alderson’s team.

In only 90 seconds, Angelina Sculco made an impressive goal with the assist by Dalton Guthrie putting Wash Family Construction on the scoreboard. Manino struck back a couple of minutes later for his second goal of the night taking the score to 4-1.

Just before the end of the first half of play Manino passed the ball to Rivera. Rivera took the shot that sailed just past Waterman. With an excellent save, Waterman prevented Tyler’s Ice Cream from scoring, closing out the half with a score of 5-1.

The second half started with Rivera in the goal for Tyler’s Ice Cream. Michael Pears took over the goalkeeping responsibilities for Wash Family Construction.

Six minutes into second half play, Rivera save the shot of Sculco. Thomas Heckler, for Tyler’s Ice Cream, played patiently waiting for the opportunity to shoot, scoring the sixth goal for his team.

Wash Family Construction struck back with a strong kick and goal by Bryson Higgins. Playing both offense and defense Tyler’s Ice Cream’s David Daigle and German Rivera helped assist their team to victory with skilled ball handling and attacks on the ball. Hagan Powers, Tyler’s middle defender, continued to have a strong presence on the field.

More than halfway through the second half, Alderson pursued the ball at the goal and found the net increasing Tyler’s lead to 8-2. Manino got a hat trick when he scored at the 20th minute of the game. Pears saved a goal attempt by Daigle, showing confidence and fearlessness.

One minute later, Rogers scored again marking the final score of the game at 10-2. Tyler’s Ice Cream’s ability to gel as a team on the field can be attributed in part to Rogers, Powers and Alderson playing for King Middle School’s girls’ soccer team. The King team found great success in a recent district tournament where it came in second place.

The championship game is scheduled Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
