Learning every kick of the way: The youngest players bang the indoor soccer boards

Anna Maria Island Sun News Story

MONICA SIMPSON | SUN

Caleb Kinkle for Miller Electric is ready to bang the
boards indoor soccer against defender Ashton Hovda
for Fun & More Rentals.

Just as with outdoor soccer, flag football and basketball, the kids at the Anna Maria Island Community Center get the chance to learn the sport of indoor soccer at an early age.

The youth indoor soccer league includes the Instructional League for kids 5 to 7 years old. Sporting their shin guards and business- sponsored uniforms, more than 25 kindergarten, first and second grade kids take the indoor soccer field each week, learning the fast paced game.

On Monday, Aug. 3, Fun & More Rentals, coached by Tom Baugher, and Miller Electric, coached by David Greene, played the second to the last game of the season. Just because they are young does not mean the game is not action packed. In fact this game saw an amazing comeback by Miller Electric in the first half and the game ending in a tie.

Technically, in the instructional leagues the score of the ball game is not officially kept. This game exemplified the beauty of recreational sports at the Center. All of the players played. The coaches instructed and encouraged the players. The players fought hard, but more importantly had fun.

The first half of the game saw powerful scoring by Ashton Hovda for Fun & More Rentals. Hovda scored three goals in the first half, with an additional goal by Tommy Baugher. The big first half come back can be attributed to four goals by Xane Morgan for Miller Electric. Morgan was supported by his teammates, who helped to make the goals possible.

The exciting end to the first half kept everyone on the edge of their seats for the second half action. With the support of his teammates - Bauger, Morgan, Bam Gartman, Ava Harlan, Payton Hovda, Jack Mattick and Chloe Russell - A. Hovda was able to have a strong second half for Fun & More Rentals. Miller Electric’s second half was spotlighted by good defensive stops by Kyle Samules and strong offensive runs by Caleb Krinkle. Asa Brisson, Gigi Greene, Dax Morgan, Victoria Perry and Rylee Schecter and the rest of the Miller Electric crew kept the team in the game.

The ninth goal of the game was scored by A. Hovda at the 17-minute mark of the game to break the tie for Fun & More Rentals. Near the 19th minute, Miller Electric tied it up with a fifth goal by Morgan. The game ended in a tie – both teams celebrating a great game for all.
