The seven-week adult basketball season saw tough head-to-head battles each week, and the semi-final match ups were no different. The gymnasium at the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s first playoff game on June 23 pitted #3 Team Ray against #2 Team Mickan. These two teams went strong to the end, fighting for a place in the championship game.

The game started with the tipoff between Team Ray’s Jordan Demers and Team Mickan’s Antwaun Jackson. Cameron Kawcack started the scoring for Team Mickan, but Demers quickly answered back. Demers proved to have the hot hand during the first half of play, putting 10 more points on the board for Team Ray taking the score to 8-14. Jackson added four points in the scoring run. Alban Gega contributed a basket for Team Mickan.

After Jackson put up two, Tanoan Alexander shot the first three pointer of the night for Team Ray. Team Captain Matt Ray shot two consecutive baskets, and Alexander had another basket from downtown lighting up the scoreboard for Team Ray at 12-25.

Jackson fought back hard for Team Mickan, shooting a three-point shot of his own as well as three more baskets. Team Ray ended the first half with two more baskets and a score of 21-29.

With Team Ray in the lead by eight points, Team Mickan started quick with another starting basket by Kawcack. Demers hit a quick three-point shot that seemed to ignite Team Mickan. Going on a 12-point run with baskets by Jackson and Patrick Calvary, Team Mickan took the lead again for the first time since the initial tipoff with a score of 35-32.

Demers and Ray contributed with three pointers each and Alexander added another shot for Team Ray. Jackson, Calvary and Kawcack all hit baskets to take the score to 41-44.

With the first spot in the championship game on the line, Jackson and Calvary dug deep and widened the score for Team Mickan. Team Ray left Jackson alone at the basket allowing him to slam the basket. Calvary’s speed and agility was just too much for the defenders on Team Ray.

Team Mickan finished the game with a score of 56-49. Team Mickan faces the #1 seed Gator Squad. The Gator Squad beat #5 seed Team Kern in another close battle 53-50. The championship game was held on Tuesday, June 30. The season will come to a close with a three-point shot and slam dunk contest on Tuesday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m.
