match of the night.

Finding its first win of the season, team Signarama defeated team Duncan Real Estate on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in a two game match. Its win was a met by a well-matched foursome led by Laura Alderson and team captain Michelle Laade for Duncan Real Estate. The duo of Alderson and Laade has played together in the Anna Maria Island Community Center adult co-ed volleyball league for several seasons, and it showed on the court.

In the first game of the night, Alderson showed her serving strength, and Laade assisted her team with accurate and effective setting. With the quick pace of rally scoring utilized in the league, Signarama answered back. Signarama brought to the Community Center gym lightning fast serves from Marina Felipe, diving digs by team captain Ray Gardner and powerful spikes by Jordan Demers and Gage Lubore.

The strength and ability of both teams was shown with long rallies, speed, precision hits and excellent ball placement. However, some unfortunate miss hits by Duncan Real Estate cost it the first game 25-16.

The second game of the night started with an ace by Alderson as the server for Duncan, leading to a 1-4 lead. Signarama’s Gardner followed up with a short run at serve to tie the game 4-4. With amazing serving by Nick Smith, Duncan Real Estate took back the lead 5-8. Duncan held the lead well into the second game with nice setting by Mike Bugal and consistent serving by Laade. Gardner kept the opponent on its toes, putting the volleyball into the weak spot of the court with force.

With fearless digs by Lubore and spiking by Gardner, Signarama took the lead for the first time in the second game with the score at 13-12. Signarama capitalized on an uncharacteristically low serve by Alderson. Felipe for Signarama increased its lead to 19-14 by sneaking the volleyball unexpectedly over the net.

Continued teamwork by Signarama limited Duncan Real Estate to only three more points to close out the second and final game of the match. Signarama captured the 25-17 win with the strength of Demers and Gardner.

This win by Signarama marks its first of the season, bringing its record to 1-5. Southern Greens remains undefeated with six wins. Sugar Beach Digital is currently in second place, losing only two games. Duncan Real Estate has three wins and four losses, putting it in third place so far in the season.
