Smart phone, smart home
Remember the Jetsons? George, Jane and their kids lived in the world of the future, where the house was self cleaning and robots took care of just about everything. In 1962, when the Jetsons first showed up on our TV screens, the thought of gadgets giving us a plethora of leisure time seemed unattainable, but believe it or not we’re almost there.
If you’re tired of performing mundane tasks round the house, there are robotics companies around the world creating objects with artificial intelligence that would make the Jetsons envious. Technological advancement is impacting every aspect of our lives and the “smart home” may very well be the most advanced of the advanced technologies.
Within the next decade you could have your refrigerator tell you exactly what’s inside and even conjure up recipes using the available ingredients. New insight into the chemical and molecular make up of foods is allowing for chefs to create all kinds of frozen foods. And something as simple as a cutting board is being designed to be digital, incorporating a food scale, touch screen displaying recipes and step by step instructions.
If you want your bedroom to be pitch black, don’t worry about the window coverings. Pretty soon you can get a Hi-Can bed that comes complete with blinds that drop on all sides making it night even in full daylight.
We can all agree that washing machines have come a long way from the scrub board, but apparently we’re not done yet. A product that is still in the conceptual design phase is a mini washing machine that is eco-friendly, Instead of using water and soap the machine cleans clothes via ultrasonic waves and can get charged with the sun via a built in solar panel.
Hold on. We’re not done yet. What about the Magic Mirror already a hit in Asia and Europe? It’s a fully functioning mirror that has a built in display connected to the internet so that you can browse the Web, watch videos, check the weather and more. Google glass already has this, but the Magic Mirror is more portable. And toilets are already pretty smart with Bluetooth connections, sensors to raise and lower the lid, heated seats, ambient lighting and who knows what next.
Although I like the Magic Mirror, the one bit of advanced technology that I can really relate to is the transparent TV. Every time I look at my big screen TV when it’s turned off, I wish I could make it disappear and now I can. It’s a new product design that makes your TV screen transparent so that when it’s turned off, you can see straight through it.
Not surprisingly, Apple is on board with the smart home announcing at their recent Worldwide Developers Conference that it has a new smart home platform for developers called HomeKit. With HomeKit you can do things like control your lights, door locks, room temperatures, garage doors and even use it see who’s at your front door. Interfaced with Siri means you can simply issue a command through your iPhone to manipulate the devices in your home.
Many of these functions can already be done remotely, but Apple’s HomeKit integrates existing apps that control domestic services into one place allowing users to control them all via a single app.
Apple is actively working with home automation companies to expand remote domestic services, so we should be hearing a lot more about these advanced technologies.
Will these advancements turn us into the Jetsons? After all, George only worked one hour a day. Can’t imagine what we would do with the other 23 hours without a bathroom to clean or a rug to vacuum. But as they say at Apple, “We have an app for that.”
