Work hard, play hard

So often for residents who live here much of the year, we settle into our routines and have to remind ourselves to play tourist from time to time. All of us have driven over the Causeway watching groups of kayaks drifting by. Today we were one of those groups. Several years ago, some of our neighbors in Key Royale organized a group of a few explorers. Now the e-mail distribution list includes dozens of participants or wannabes.

My husband and I had kayaks, but when his shoulder went out, we opted for a double kayak. That was a workout and not particularly fun, so we sold the kayaks.

When I saw the e-mails for the weekly outings from our neighborhood kayak organizer, Diane Phinney, I thought, “I don’t have time for that. I’m too busy.” We go sailing when the weather conditions are right. That’s enough. We see plenty of nature in the water sailing, I thought.

Always looking for new, challenging workouts, I thought it would be good to take a day off and chill. As a runner, I thought the upper body workout would be a good balance. Weight lifting in the gym doesn’t always cut it. “Functional activities,” as the current buzz phrase goes. Strengthening muscles you use every day for real life tasks can be every bit as valuable and way more fun than weight lifting 12 times for three sets in the same direction.

I’ve been out a few times with the group and don’t regret a minute. There have been so many special moments we’ve seen as a group or individually. We all have been amazed at the number of stingrays jumping in the canals this spring. We’ve seen them do acrobatics and frankly, I’m amazed that one of them hasn’t landed in one of our boats. One of the kayackers reports a full-fledged family with children in her canal.

During our recent trip we floated over a shallow oyster bed. The water was as clear as I’ve ever seen it here. Crystal! The water was so shallow we had to extend our paddles well out to the sides of our boats so the paddles wouldn’t scrape the bottom.

The low frog-like sounds of blue herrons in mangroves greeted us at every turn. We discovered a secret lake at the end of one incredible maze of mangroves. Our fearless leader led us to many deserted beaches where we could cruise in and enjoy lunches we brought along.

The most interesting if you could call it that, piece of garbage was a can so rusty, that I couldn’t tell what it was. It hadn’t been opened, but it was floating in the water. So I scooped it up with my hand and tossed it the back of the kayak. The stench was overpowering.

When we got back home, we had to use several bags just to lift it and take to the garbage can. It smelled like a thousand dead fishes.

When we beach on islands or isolated beaches, we always do a garbage sweep before we leave. It never seems like enough, but we do the best we can with the garbage bags we bring along and can attach to a kayak.

This day, a pelican stuck with us, grabbing a fish along the way. We discussed it’s possible age based on the color of the head. Sometimes we get followed by dolphins. And it’s always great conversation with one of the kayakers who paddles at your speed for awhile until some other distraction takes you or her away.

It’s all just so beautiful. And no gas needed. The best things in life are free or darn close to it. Nothing like smelling the roses or the salt air.
