Football Super Bowl Champs.

The 8-1 Agnelli Pools & Spa Dolphins battled hard against the 8-1 Duffy’s Tavern Raiders in the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult co-ed flag football Super Bowl championship on Thursday night. Fans were not disappointed as they watched the biggest game of the summer, go down to the wire.

The Raiders stormed out of the gate early and set the tone for the game. On their first possession, Tyler Redmond capped off the drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Redmond took the ball right back from the Dolphins after getting a big interception on defense. The Raider’s took advantage of this turnover, and quarterback Chris Gillum found his favorite target, Mike Gillum, in the end zone and the touchdown.

On the ensuing Dolphin's drive, the Duffy’s Raider's defense again intercepted the ball. The Raiders again capitalized on this mistake, and Chris Gillum threw a TD pass to Dustin Swain. Add on a two-point conversion by Swain and an extra point by Mike Gillum, and just like that, the Raiders took the early lead 21-0 in the first 10 minutes of play.

Being the true competitors they are, the Dolphins pulled it together and made their run at the championship. In the next 20 minutes of the game they dominated. Pat Calvary took control on offense. He rushed for a 13 yard touchdown and caught a Tim Shaughnessy TD pass and also a Mike Shaughnessy TD pass and added on an extra point.

The Dolphin’s defense also responded and did not allow the Raiders to score the rest of the game. Their defense was led by Calvary, Sean Sanders and Tim Shaughnessy, each with four flag pulls.

With less than 10 minutes left in the game and the score 21-19, the Dolphin’s defense held strong and gave the ball back to their offense twice with a chance to win. But with the game on the line, the Raiders defense held strong and stopped them from scoring. The Raider’s defense was led by Tyler Redmond with 4 flag pulls and 2 interceptions, Chris Gillum with 3 pulls and an interception and Jamie Gregorich and Dustin Swain, each with 2 flag pulls.

All of the Raiders 21 points were within the first 10 minutes of the game, but in the end, it was enough for them to hold on and become the 2012 AMICC Summer Super Bowl Champions.
