Yoga on the Island

Yoga opportunities here are not to be missed. There are so many more places to take classes than there were when I first moved here in 2004. I used to go to classes a lot more, but as life got intense, something had to go. But I was reminded this week how important it is to keep up with a good class.

As a runner, running coach and personal trainer, you would think someone like me would get plenty of stretching. I stretch after every run, and I demonstrate all the stretches when I work with clients. I have them stretch for at 5 to10 minutes after every hour of exercise. But it just isn't the same.

One of my running friends reminded me of that great Saturday yoga class that I used to take weekly. It meets on the beach.

I'm going to describe a few of the classes I've taken over the years. I know I will leave some instructors and classes out. I don't mean to, but this is just my own experience. I don't remember all the names of instructors, but I'll give you the location. Keep searching for other groups, by all means.

The yoga class I've gone to since I moved here is taught by Jasmine and meets every Saturday (and Wednesdays) at 8:30 a.m. the end of Pine Avenue on the Gulf side. She generously takes requests. This past Saturday a man yelled out "back," and she did one of the best back workouts I've ever experienced.

After months of sitting in a chair, letting all that training I did for last year's marathon slide, I had stiff muscles I never knew I had. I was blown away how I could not do a child's pose from stiff, painful knees at the start of the session. By the end, no problem.

It is important to find instructors who don't rush and give modifications if you are not that 18-year-old limber body you were pretty sure you still had.

Island Yoga Space is on the second floor above Ginny & Jane E's on Gulf Drive almost across from where the beach yoga takes place. I've taken great classes there too. It has a website where you can check its class schedule. If the weather doesn't cooperate, this is a fun place to chill.

Both fitness clubs on the Island do yoga classes. The only one I've attended is at Island Fitness instructed by Dottie. Her class is packed, and she does an easy, but challenging, session. Due to a flat tire, she cancelled suddenly once in all the years I've been there as a personal trainer. So I was asked to sub.

Since I've done yoga since my teens, it was no problem. Even though I'd taken her class, I got some feedback afterwards that I was too hard by comparison. I think I did too many long chatarangas, a kind of pushup when you slowly lower your body to the ground. Though my genetically great flexibility has caused more than one instructor to comment, I'm a better personal trainer than yoga instructor. With individual clients, you know exactly what the limits are.

I haven't been to yoga classes at the Anna Maria Island Community Center in several years. Check there for class availability.

There are also a number of other yoga-on-the-beach classes on Sunday mornings by different instructors. If you walk the beach from the Beach House in Bradenton Beach up to Pine Avenue in Anna Maria any time from 8 to 10 a.m., you'll probably find one or more of these classes going on. It's OK to just pop in. Bring a towel or sheet.

Most take optional donations. Anywhere from $2 to $10 is considered kind. You can call Island Beach Massage and Yoga to find out where and when some of these are if you don't want to leave finding a class to chance.

If you ever have an opportunity to do yoga on the beach, there is nothing quite like it. Don't miss this opportunity while you are visiting, or forget about it if you are lucky enough to live here.

You can follow Island resident Ellen Jaffe Jones on her Facebook page and keep up with her just released book:,"Eat Vegan on $4 a Day," or her website: www.vegcoach.com. She is also a nationally certified personal trainer and running coach. For training in a gym or private hire, contact Ellen at ejones@vegcoach.com or 941-704-1025.
