tournament championship game. Emma Laade

This week’s Sun sports Game of the Week was the 6 and 7-year-old tournament championship game, Island Real Estate vs. Sandbar restaurant. Island Real Estate had to pull off an exciting come from behind win. The Sandbar team dominated the first half. Ashton Pennell got an early goal with a hard shot that deflected off the goalie and in. Not long after, teammate Tyler Brewer booted a high ball from the other side of the field that bounced so high it went right over the goalie and into the net. Amazing goal tending by Sandbar goalie Dylan McKee, and great defense led by Emily Sackett and Emma Laade shut out the high scoring Island Real Estate team for almost the whole first half. It wasn’t until just before the half that Jaysen Berzowski finally fought through that tough defense and scored for Island Real Estate. This left the score 2-1 at halftime.

Tension and excitement filled the air during the second half. The two teams battled back and forth both on offense and defense. Neither team gave up and the fans cheered louder and louder as the game progressed. Jaysen Berzowski was relentless and determined for Island Real Estate. He finally tied the game, with just over four minutes left in the game, when he split two Sandbar defenders in the middle of the field and blasted in his second goal. You could see Island Real Estate’s offense finally wore down that amazing Sandbar defense. With just two minutes left, Berzowski took a throw in and quickly dribbled down the left side. With a defender draped all over him, he slid the ball past the keeper with his left foot and into the left corner of the net. This gave Island Real Estate the lead for the first time and finally the win 3-2.

They say that defense wins championships and good second half decisions by Island Real Estate Coach David Johnston proved true to that. His defense led by goalie Thomas Heckler and defenders Cameron Conley, Gianna Sparks and Mary Grace Cucci shut out the Sandbar offense the entire second half. This defense and the tenacious offensive play of Berzowski and Gavin Johnston was what led to this exciting tournament championship. Congratulations to all the 6 and 7-year-old players on a great season.
