This week’s Sun sports Game of the Week featured play from the 8-9 year old soccer age group at the Community Center. Jessie’s Island Store took on Connie’s Landscaping Wednesday night. The Jessie’s team shut out the Connie’s team in the first half. Great defense led by William Bernett and goal tending by Noah Fischer kept the Connie’s team scoreless. Mid-way through the first half the Jessie’s offense struck. A handball at midfield by a Connie’s player led to a direct kick for Jessie’s. Daniel Sentman took the direct kick and made a great center lead pass to the waiting teammate Hannah McCracken in front of the goal.

McCracken didn’t disappoint and scored. Soon after, defensive player William Bernett dribbled the ball from the defensive end, coast to coast, past Connie’s players and shot on goal. The goalie Clayton Wilkinson made the initial save, but the ball deflected back to Bernett. This time, he gave the ball a big boot and scored Jessie’s second goal. In the second half, the tides turned. Connie’s player adjustments put Rory Welch and Sean Brian, Jr. on defense and Corbin Gregg in goal, which helped shut out the Jessie’s scoring in the entire second half. This proved to be a good move and gave Clayton Wilkinson the opportunity to play offense. Clayton received a nice pass from Jaclyn Schlossberg, and he found the back of the net for Connie’s first goal. The Connie’s team tried and tried to tie the game, but it wasn’t until right at the end when a relentless Schlossberg kicked the ball three times in front of the net amongst a host of Jessie’s defenders before she scored the tying goal. The tug-o-war game ended in a 2-2 tie with lots of smiling young faces.
