Upwards of 250 people watched as more than 30 pooches of all types and sizes competed in the Anna Maria Island Sun’s Seventh Annual Dog Costume Contest Saturday.

The dogs and their owners competed for several trophies, although every entry took home a ribbon. A.J.’s Island Network and several other businesses provided a basket of goodies.

Lucky, owned by Holly Connelly, took first place in the Cutest category dressed as a baby. Lisa Calvert’s Lola, took second place as a clown and Stella Rose, owned by Kandi Kerekes, came in third as a monkey.

In the Most Original category, Ruby Lake's Chihuahua Chaquito took first place as a scarecrow. Sammy, owned by Pat McLaughlin and Su Ling, owned by Sandy Mullon, took second place as a chicken and a rooster. Jody, owned by Tanice Bellas, came in third as a red hat lady.

Charlene Doll’s Bay Breeze took first in the Celebrity category as Bernie Madeoff followed by Desoto, owned by Caroline Pardue as Darth Vader and Chief, owned by Maureen McCormick, came in third as Count Chocula.

Honorable mention went to Steve Stewart’s Darla, which had a shirt with a picture, and Ruthie Mercie’s Spark Plug, which was Beach Dog.

The Sun thanks Dave Russell, owner of Rotten Ralph’s; Karen LaPensee, of LaPensee Plumbing; and Chef Bill Schaefer, of the Waterfront restaurant, who judged the entries.
